One of the best interviews of Shabana recalling the times of Balraj Sahni, Kaifi Azmi and Dileep sahab. My father, a stage actor, (professor of engineering by profession, but a scholar) used to ask me to look at Balraj Sahni's eyes in Do bigha zamin when he opens the door to see the shock...As a 7-year old, I was cultivated into appreciating fine art - be it cinema, music or literature. My favourite has been Sahir Ludhianvi - always and forever. (Despite being a Tamilian and growing up in north India, I love this world of poetry. I can only be grateful to have been exposed to this world.

Dilip kumar, Sahir and Mohd.Rafi are also my all time favourites. They are the stars that shine at the highest level.
Dilip kumar was an institution and there is no actor who can say that he has not taken from Dilip saab- what a human being what an actor ❤❤

One of the BEST interviews in recent times. Shabana, one of the finest actors of Indian Cinema n my personal favourite for decades now has so brilliantly articulated on the sheer impact of old lyrics embellished in Urdu language in Hindi films and also on the legendary Dilip Kumar n Balraj Sahani. For millenniels, the top five films strongly recommended, as per me, will be: Mother India, Devdas, Ganga Jumna, Mughal e Azam n Garm Hawa.
The interview is thoroughly enjoyable n rewarding. Full marks(10/10) to Anupama.

@@user-qi5xb2nc3v I had restricted the no. of films to five. Yes, I am entirely in agreement with you on the three films named you. I am tempted to add 'Guide' n 'Pakeezah' for their sheer cinematic richness. That raises the no. of films to ten for 'a must' viewing by the millennials.
Shabana Ji is the epitome of arts and culture - I fell in love with her when I saw her in Masoom for the first time
I lived in India for 6 years. For passe times I went to cinema, I could undrestand half of the film. I saw many films. With 2 rupies at the lodge for ladies we could forget our homesickness and nostalgia for our country. I home the world could be like Indian movies with happy ending.
A lady came and borrowed me 5 rupies then she died with my money, a day before her death, she had gone to cinema just to forget he sufferings. Then I came to Europe, happy endings dont exicted.
These films developpes hope and compassions. with these beautiful actresses.
If you don't have comapssion in India, it would be the end of India.
The young men danced with the film and after that every participent left optimisic. God bless India

When Shabana Azmi said, the old songs were not just songs they were philosophies, I felt it. Kehta hai joker Sara zamana, aadhi hakikat aadha fasana, or zindagi ek Safar hai suhana, yahan kal kya ho kisne jana or ye jeevan hai is jeevan ka yahi hai yahi hai yahi hai rango roop are all songs that make you think. ❤

Dilip Kumar was not only the first ever method actor in the world he also had tremendous command over Urdu and English languages. Why Urdu was known as the language of Royals Dilip Kumar was the person who made one understand that. Similarly his English was straight out of high quality text books of the highest class. I'm a writer and an author. I have never been a fan of anyone except Dilip Kumar. He was so compelling. I could not resist him.
Shabana speaks so well. I'm really impressed.

What a beautiful conversation.
Actually the hospitality Shabana is talking about is quite similar to what my mother always talked about.No matter how small the income the welcome extended to guests would always be outright larger than life.i still remember the enormous cooking utensils.and also keep in mind there used to be no gas cylinder then.

🌸 Delightful conversation and very interesting anecdotes shared by Shabana Azmi of a bygone but lovingly remembered era. Though I’ve seen quite a few lengthy interviews of Shabana Azmi, this conversation offered precious stories I had not heard before. 😍
And even though I’ve watched quite a few films of the 50s, 60s and 70s, this video is a great reminder that I’ve yet a lot of catching up to do. I’ve not seen Yusuf Saab’s films Tarana, Naya Daur and Ram aur Shyam (but have seen Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam, Madhumati and Gunga Jumna). I have hardly seen anything with Balraj Saab in it, including Garm Hava, Kabuliwala and Haqeeqat (but I have seen Waqt and Neel Kamal, not liking the latter very much). 🤭
If only films from that time were more readily available in a great quality and in the original aspect ratios, especially in the part of Europe where I’m from. I often cringe watching a film because you can tell the image has shamelessly been cropped and scenes have shamelessly been cut (short), as if there is a total disregard for the filmmaker’s vision and what he/she originally put out, making it very hard for me to sit through them. Don’t get me started even on this horrendous trend of “colorizing” films that are in beautiful black and white originally. Why on earth?! 😩
Anyway, thank you Anupama. Could you also bring Waheeda Rehman, Sharmila Tagore, Vyjayanthimala, Mala Sinha, Saira Banu, Tanuja, Asha Parekh, Manoj Kumar, Biswajeet, Dharmendra, Madhavi Mukherjee and Helen to the show? That would be phenomenal. 🤓
You can easily connect with every word of Shabana ji coz you have seen them while growing up as a kid… actor’s like her are simply part of our genes 🧬

Shabana is so right about bulk of the current music being a lot of noise, I call it "Halla-Gulla" music. Her observations of song lyrics in the good old days are on point. Think of "Kisi ke muskarahaton pe ho nisar".

It's a fact that Mr. Amitabh Bachchan has been the greatest Indian actor since the early 70's and currently, he still holds that position. In the past, it was Mr. Dilip Kumar who reigned supreme. As the romantic hero [including the character of Devdas], no one could ever hold a candle to the illustrious Dilip. When he whispered sweet nothings into the heroine's ear, women in the audience were stirred because his panache was so potent, they felt he was whispering those words of endearment to each one of them. Yes, our Dilip was more handsome than any of the present-day heroes with that mop of hair, those lovely eye-brows and lashes that speak volumes for beauty. [Ask Liz Taylor] When I refer to Dilip Saab, I have to write with polished enthusiasm. I will hand to mantle of the Best Female Actress to none other than our beloved Shabana Azmi. A staunch fan of hers since the early 70's, the only current actor to follow in her footsteps is the multi-dimensional, Taapsi Pannu.

When I was studying in 1st PUC, multi language 🎥 Kanneshwar Rama film was got shooting With great Director Sri.M.S.Sathyu sir with their team with Sri.Ananth nag,Shabana Azm Madam and Tom Alter along with many more artist Arrived to Shikaripur Town in Shimoga Dist. In Karnataka , the film was got shooting in Sandy day in huge crowed ,then I met to Madam and Anath Sir. I also appear in little scean.all are the multi talented team.I hats up to Madam to your God Bless You.

As much as I enjoy and idolize Dilip Motilal and Balraj, I am as mesmerised if not more with the performances of SV Ranga Rao, Kannada Rajkumar, Udayakumar, Balakrishna, Narasinharaju.. and yes Nagesh and Ganesan from Tamil Nadu, Uttam Kumar in Bengal, to mention a few. At times the Hindi movie audience seem like frogs in a well oblivious of the talent that exists around the country.
Song 'Kar chale hum fida' was written along with 'apni azadi ko hum' and Ae mere watan ke logo' to be sung in honour of Indian soldiers after 62 war out of which 'Ae mere watan ke logo' was finally selected

Hindi songs are vocal based. People recall songs by singers. Few remember who gave the music or wrote lyrics. My record collection is categorised by the music directors, the gods of Hindi music.

The way Shabana said haqiqat 22:06...it is real pronunciation in urdu language. For younger generation it will be very difficult to say in this manner infact in whole Hindi cinema nobody can say like this..This is how urdu is spoken ,what today's lyricist is selling in the name of urdu poetry is gibberish
