Taking the CompTIA Security+ exam is a great way to get your foot in the door. I am planning on making more Security+ videos in the future but I wanted to provide this one to give an overview of how I passed. Everyone is capable to passing the sy0-501 exam, it really comes down to how much effort you put in. Knowing how useful and important this certification really provides the motivation to put the work.

I failed my Sec+ exam twice using Darril Gibson's stuff. His book is informative, but the practice tests and online tests are terrible and DO NOT represent the test well. I kept scoring around 550 on both tries. I recently found Professor Messer and some free practice tests that represents the test extremely well. Hopefully I will pass it and finally put this test behind me.

Part of what makes you successful is figuring out how YOU learn, how YOU remember content.
Most study guides are generalized guides on how to study...but doing things like 'highlighting' key terms, writing them down (sometimes more than once), printing out charts of known ports and glancing at it every now and then... your brain will eventually pick up this information naturally. Too many people try to read a Chapter, then assume they should be ready for the test questions related to it. I often read the same chapter over and over (or I'll go 2 or 3 chapters then start over on the first).
Some retain information much easier than others. But try reading out loud, or writing much of the content down. Just by doing so you may trigger some method that works best for you (like flash cards you constantly have someone read to you). Also, when you get to the exam itself, it's okay to mark questions to answer later. Get through all the familiar/easier ones. This way you're not in full panic mode nearing the 90minute mark, and you are at question 45 because you stayed on the hard ones too long. Finish 90% of the test and go back to skipped questions, you'll ease your stress.

**Passing Security+ is stoopid EASY, here is what I did and materials used links at end
**disclaimer: have not worked in 3yrs, but b4 that 3yrs of helpdesk/desktop work experience
#1 - Watch Messers or Dion's Sec+ videos as material introduction, don't worry about taking notes
#2 - Now read thru Gibsons Sec+ GCGA book, material should now make some sense, take notes as needed, take chapt. review quiz's to confirm material learned
#3 - Memorize ports 21, 22, 80, 443, and whether udp or tcp for each
#4 - Know basic firewall setup rules like how to allow/deny traffic based on ports(see #3)
#5 - Print out CompTIA Exam objectives, this is exactly what will be on the test, anything thing that you can't explain, review and brush up on it.
#6 - FINAL REVIEW, go thru Gibsons book again but only reading the REMEMEBER THIS sections of each chapter and the end of chapter summaries.
#7 - TAKE Exam - The Exam consists of 75+ questions. The first 3-5 questions on the exam are PBQ questions(simulations) so SKIP THEM by flagging for review. You want to do em LAST since they can take alot of time to do and you don't wanna run out of time for the remaining 75 m/c questions. So go thru the multiple choice first and then the PBQ's. Always chose and answer and if your unsure of the question, flag it so you can return to it if you have time. Its better to at least guess then to leave it blank this way if you run out of time, there is at least a 25% chance you can get a point v/s 0 points if you leave it blank.
#8 - PROFIT, sheeeeeeit, maybe even send me a buck or 2 so I can buy me an apple or orange for lunch..

Practice Exams - Dion offers 6 for $13 on Udemy, if you score 80%+ on those your in a good spot. However Professor Messer's practice exams are as close to the real exam as possible and worth it, 3 for $25. If your scoring 80% on those exams you are ready!!

the book takes about a week to read if you dedicate about 4 hours to it a day with notes. The messer videos are a series you can finish in about two weeks between listening in your car and whatnot, but yeah i'd recommend not cramming for this one.

The sample tests are a little easier? They’re a LOT easier! The textbooks and study sheets don’t teach you how to identify and resolve attacks via CLI and things like that. I just took it for the first time today after reading my book front to back, taking a class, and reading my book again along with using professor Messor and STILL failed 686/900. I’m having trouble figuring out how I’m going to fill any gaps of knowledgr because I can pass practice exams with flying colors most of the time.

  • @raymccarty4612
    @raymccarty4612 Před 4 lety +1

Get the book and buy the online package from the same author. Also listen to the 140 plus videos from professor Messer. Study your proverbial ass off for about two months and take all of the exams and practice the practical scenarios. Pass the first time like I did.

Did you go through chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3, etc. or did you go through the order of chapters listed out by objective. Example objective 1.1 says chapter 6, chapter 7. Did you then study chapter 6 and chapter 7 to accomplish the objective. Or did you just go through cover to cover not taking into account the objectives?

@@JoanApita You're welcome! Having all of your CompTIA series are a good foundation especially if you have no IT experience. You don't have to have all of them but you can focus on what you desire. For example, if you prefer to do networking, then you may focus on obtaining your CompTIA Network+ before pursuing your CCENT and CCNA certifications. Or you may prefer to pursue security and obtain your CompTIA Security+ first and then your CompTIA CySA, Cisco Security, etc.
