    So while this might not be seen, I do wish to say something when it comes to Knight Artorias.
    If you follow the lore for the boss, through and through you will find out that he actually was only able to fight with one arm. Artorias is actually left handed, in the fight he can only fight with his right arm because his left arm was crushed and broken. If Artorias was able to fight with his left arm there is a good chance he might've easily been able to kill us.
    Not to mention, with access to both arms he would've had access to his shield which only would've boosted his defense further. Artorias was weakened when we originally fought him, and even then he is an incredibly tough boss fight. Imagine just how strong he would've been if he was able to fight with his dominant arm still in play.
    When you go to get his sword, you can only use the proper weapon arts by equipping it in your left handed slot, because Artorias is left handed is why you have to do that. You also have to use it in the left handed slot in order for it to deal more damage. Only further saying how screwed we would've been if his dominant arm wasn't broken.

      With his blessed shield he also might have been able to escape the Abyss, but instead decided to sacrifice it to save Sif. He fought us with his off-hand and he didn't have his shield. If we really fought Artorias in his true form he'd have crushed us all and pointed down lol
      Seriously tho, someone so selfless that in the face of death and corruption has the ability to show compassion to a fallen comrade and save him, instead of himself deserves a frickin sunlight medal (And major props).

      @origamifan5515 Před 4 lety +6

      He also reminds me of Oceiros (well, more like, Oceiros reminded me of him, chronologically) because the transition between their two phases are polar opposite: Ludwig start as, possibly the most horrifyingly looking beast in bloodborne with erratic movement and attack (also, f*** that ramming attack that 1-hit kill you if you're not at full health, and is only preceded by a slightly more high pitched scream to warn you to dodge, and that will still hit you if you're too close to him, even if you dodge) , and then turn into a Moonlight greatsword wielding Centaur that, while still heavily mutated, look distinctly more "human", since he's standing up, and from there on, it feels more like a duel (and, for me, a phase that is much easier than the one where he is a shrieking horse), and his grunts sounds much more human whereas Oceiros start the fight as a almost-lucid humanoid scaleless dragon that is capable of speech, and morph into a quadrupedic shrieking monstrosity in the second phase

    I have to disagree with what you said about Artorias. Not that it's an excellent fight. I'd never argue against that. However, you'd called it a battle between two warriors "at the height of their strengths." I honestly can't imagine that that's Artorias's peak condition. His sword arm is utterly obliterated, he's lacking his shield, and he's much more animalistic and Berserk (SEE WHAT I DID THERE???) rather than having the composure and critical thinking of a trained knight.

    My personal favourite boss fight was the Sister Friede boss fight. First, the lore. Sister Friede was the eldest of the three sisters that founded the Sable Church of Londor. She fled, and came across the Painted World of Ariandel. She tricked Father Ariandel into believing that the only way to preserve the painted world was to quench the flame with his own blood, lest it spark. Eventually, though, as Sister Friede dies, Ariandel is so enraged at her death that he turns more beast than sentient mind, using the flame he sacrificed so much to suppress to bring her back. Even after he dies along with Friede, she still rises once more and uses the Dark to try and kill the Ashen One one final time. Now, to the fight itself. The beginning cutscene makes Sister Friede sounds almost sorrowful, yet absolutely convinced that she must slay the Ashen One, giving her a slight bit of character development. I like the way it starts out as a quiet, yet powerful fight, with a chorus of voices in the background. Sister Friede moves quickly, and has slightly telegraphed, yet swift and powerful attacks that you need to be very watchful for in order to avoid, yet they are avoidable. Her ice attacks make her seem even more powerful and determined to quench the flame, as she embraces the frost of the Painted World. Moving into the second phase, this part of the fight is reminiscent of the Executioner Smough and Dragon Slayer Ornstein fight, where you have a slow, heavy, and quite dodgeable opponent contrasted with Sister Friede, a swift-hitting opponent that you will have trouble dodging if you decide to go toe-to-toe with. The expansion of the arena and its transformation to flames highlights how powerful the flame is and how the two are failing to keep it in check, fighting to preserve the painting. In this phase lies my only complaint, which is that it's too easy to bait Father Ariandel towards you and away from Sister Friede and damage their shared health bar that way. It renders Sister Friede mostly obsolete in this phase if you decide, like most do, to take that course of action, even if she does have the long-ranged ice attacks. I would have preferred it if Father Ariandel took half or a third of the damage Sister Friede took, which would encourage players to fight Sister Friede more, and both would be capable of healing the shared health pool in order to force the player to attack both eventually. When Father Ariandel and Sister Friede die, the latter rises once more in a final effort to slay the Ashen One. Her using the Dark shows just how desperate she is to quench the flame, much like Lady Maria's desperation to keep the shameful secret a secret as she resorted to the blood arts. This phase is very much like Lady Maria when she hits 30% health, with the Dark fire of Sister Friede similar to the fire of Lady Maria, along with the swiftness of the two, with Sister Friede being the fastest and hardest-hitting she has ever been, moving like an experienced Hunter from Bloodborne rather than your typical boss from Dark Souls, and the ice attacks adding a powerful touch. The musical score here is amazing, as it gives a feeling of climax and sets the adrenaline flowing. Overall, this boss fight was very well done, and my favourite boss fight in the Soulsborne series.

      I can definitely see why people love that boss but I personally detest it. Why? Well:
      1. The first 2 phases feel like estus sponges (especially phase 1) and overall the fight feels too drawn out, 3 COMPLETELY different phases is just too much for me if im honest.
      2. The 2nd phase isnt handled well. This is more a matter of perspective but I think it sucks. Lets start with the fact that theres no pillar or wall or anything to break aggro, and yeah I know, their own mechanics seperate eachother pretty well so its not throne watcher and defender bad but couldnt a bit of debris had fallen and formed a pillar? Also they are always moving around from each other. Maybe I just got bad rng but I always have to unlock the camera because theyre always at different parts of the arena, so that way if you try to attack Ariandel freide uses her ice path that explodddes attack which is a whole gripe on its own.
      Take the demon princes for example (my 2nd fav gank boss) while they fire straight beams of toxic mist, the mist doesnt explode for about 1 and a half seconds giving you time to dodge, also it doesnt inflict status effect when its just a line on the floor, freide on the other hand, the line is wider, faster, gives you frostbite and explodes so fast, then ariandel just rapes you. And thats all she does until she decides to heal him, just fire that attack
      Also she can more or less move through him, or atleast that attack can. And seeing the fact that hes a big mofo its damn near impossible to dodge those lines.
      But the last phase truly is amazing and somewhat makes up for the other 2 phases but its just plucked from lady maria pretty much give or take a move or 2 so its hard for me to praise too much
      But I can see the positives too.

      Hey DeModcracy I was wondering if one possible list you could do could be top 10 scariest/intimidating bosses. There are several bosses I think could easily fit this criteria and you could take into account things like boss design, arena atmosphere, and background music. The list wouldn't necessarily be saying these are the toughest bosses only that they are sinister or intimidating in their overall design. I personally think it would be an interesting list and think of 10 bosses that personally put the fear of god into me: (in no particular order). Gaping Dragon, Gravelord Nito, Flame Lurker, The Dukes dear Frieja, Ludwig, Orphan of Kos, Ebrietas, Blood Starved beast, Aldrich, and Dancer. This is just my opinion and I'm sure you have plenty of other videos to work but I hope you at least consider it. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your upcoming vids :D

    When I first played this series my friends got me into it and I played through dark souls 1-3 and bloodborne as multiplayer games with them, starring my bignosed freak of nature Shitewank. My first game was 2, followed by 3, then 1 (for the remaster,) then bloodborne. After the dragonslayer armor in 3 i realized i had grown in the game compared to when i started and was relying less on my friends to carry me through fights. This lead to nameless king. I had heard stories of how hard this boss was and that hes one of the best fights in gaming. This legendary status is why i was pumped when i entered that fabled boss arena. With only one other friend I beat nameless on my first ever try. To this day, it has been the most exhilarating experience I've ever had in a game. After that the bosses kept getting better, with soul of cinder, sister friede, darkeater midir, and especially slave lord gaol further buffing my experience with dark souls 3. with 1 and bloodborne following it, it never felt like they lived up to that same hype, though i can never argue against them being fantastic games as a whole. For whatever reason though i didnt get that same feeling with OnS, Artorias, or any other boss again. I will never forget my time with the series, or my encounter with nameless king, and thats why dark souls 3 is one of my favorite games ever.

    I wish difficulty wasn't a score here. If it wasn't, Gehrman would be the number 1. Gehrman isn't just the #1 boss of the series for me, I think he is one of the greatest bosses of all time. When the cutscene finishes, you expect to launch into an epic, choir dominated song, similar to the music throughout the rest of the game. Instead, it becomes a complete emotional masterpiece. Gehrman knows the Moon Presence will come to take you, and you will suffer the same fate he did, and in a way, he is protecting you from it. The setting of the fight, in the flower filled garden, the moon above, the burning workshop, is absolutely beautiful and executed so perfectly. The fight isn't brought out of him being a villain like any other game, it is because he wishes to save you, and hold his devotion to the Paleblood and the Moon Presence. The fight is done so well and is so emotionally involving, it pains me to fight him every time. The only thing is he's easy to parry. And when difficulty is so common in this series, people overlook him because of it.

      Yeah I liked G4G's ranking videos much better besides the lack of Dark Souls 3 bosses (only because they did it before Dark Souls 3 even came out - they said they plan on doing a standalone ranking of Dark Souls 3's bosses but not until both DLCs come out). Their list is more focused too. In that their criteria is that they have to be actual _bosses_, by the common criteria that it's a standalone fight with a health bar with a name at the bottom. Old King Doran and the Boletarian dragons aren't bosses no matter how tough/bosslike they might seem. Mini-bosses at best. Nor do they make arbitrary distinctions like "invader Old Monk" and "NPC Old Monk" or "tutorial Vanguard" and "non-tutorial Vanguard." They considered all facets of an individual boss when deciding on how good, bad, or somewhere between it is.

    Lady Maria still holds the top spot for my favorite blood souls boss. The adrenaline that fight harnesses is in its most pure form of any of the games for me.
    That said Ludwig is quite a choice. That fight was a fantastic introduction to the DLC, it has everything, the lore behind him was a very puzzling piece that left people guessing and speculating for months before the DLC was released, the fight itself set the tone for the DLC in that it was going to be a challenge and you'd better be ready. The fact that you can see the moonlight sword sticking out of his back during the first phase really adds a nice touch to the cutscene during, and seeing his attempt to regain his humanity one last time for the battle was really spectacular. All this being woven together with the horrific nightmare thread that is bloodborne. I felt more so than the rest of the game the DLC really gave us that disturbing horror image, and Ludwig really represents that well.
    Cheers, great list

    • @XIIIHearts
      @XIIIHearts Před 8 lety

      My one problem with Ludwig that keeps him out of the top spot for me is his jumping attack in his first phase. I don't know about everyone else's experience, but for me I could only dodge that move whenever the game felt like it. I always run away from that attack, and half the time it worked while the other half he would hit me regardless and nearly one-shotted me.
      As for my personal favorite souls boss, I have two that are at the top for different reasons. The first is Artorias for being such a memorable fight with great lore and my pick for overall best boss.
      The second pick would be Sif, not for being the best overall boss but for being the boss that had the deepest effect on me and how I view bosses and video games as a whole. When I was younger, I never gave much thought about video game stories or bosses. Even when I played Dark Souls 1 back in 2012 for the first time I still had that mindset. However things changed drastically when I first got to Sif. At first it looked like it was gonna be a fun fight with bombastic music because it's a giant wolf with a giant sword. However, as soon as the music started playing, I became confused. This sad music is Sif's? It got me to start thinking things like "Why is the music like this? What is Sif's story? Do I want to kill Sif?" Then came the final gutpunch when Sif was at low health and started to limp towards me as a desperate last stand. It actually got me to shed a tear or two. And when the fight was over, I didn't feel accomplished, liked I just rid the world of an evil beast, or even any sense of joy. I just felt......empty. This actually got me to look more into Sif's story, and subsequently the rest of the souls series as well. I was surprised at the information I found. In addition, Sif's fight takes on an even more sad undertone if you saved him from the Abyss in Oolacile, where Sif will recognize you, figure out what you're after, and still fight you to protect you from suffering the same fate as Artorias. Sif, you may not be the best boss, but you shall forever hold a special place in my heart.

    • @pratti
      @pratti Před 8 lety +24

      I love Orphan of Kos more than I love Ludwig, but I can honestly say he's way less fair than Ludwig. His second phase has attacks that are really hard to punish consistently until you master all of his moves, because he has the ability to chain moves from different combos, something 90% of bosses in Bloodborne simply cant do, like Ludwig.

    • @highvoltage7559
      @highvoltage7559 Před 8 lety +9

      Eduardo Pratti
      Actually Orphan of Kos cannot chain together combos, but rather he has combos that have alternate attacks based on your positioning and spacing. Ludwig has this too, with the difference being that he simply ends his combo and doesn't do a follow-up attack.
      But what makes Orphan more dangerous are his retaliation attacks, which force you to rethink your approach. You cannot just attack him when you see an opening, because he has multiple different retaliation attacks, so you need to position yourself properly in order to attack him while also keeping a count of how many times you strike him so you won't activate another retaliation attack. Easiest way to deal with this is to backstab him.
      I've beaten Orphan of Kos with couple of different challenges, so I can safely say I know exactly how he works. I have proof if you don't believe me. x3
      Maria on the other hand has the ability to chain attacks as she pleases, with certain attacks usually working as the finishers. Still for the most part, her combos are quite random.

Him and Gael are similar in their paths. They both throw a corpse at the beginning of the fight. Gael knew his quest to gather all the blood of the dark soul would take ages. Even Gael knew the ravages of becoming hollow would afflict him so much that he wouldn’t be able to complete his quest of gathering the blood needed to paint a new world. That is why he leaves traces of his cloak to guide you and summon signs along the way because he wants you to finish the quest that he started but could never finish. When you finally meet him he is a mad hollow and no longer remembers anything. Both he and Artorias were selfless and true to their cause, but each eventually realized they would lose their will to the curse

      Will Russell Maria is an epic battle, but i felt that Artorias and Ludwig were better, but thats opinion and you have yours, but 3rd is pretty great considering there were over a hundred bosses to go against. My number one was nameless king, but im pretty happy with 4th

      I did as well, but the score they used was just, legendary. For me personally, the only thing that puts Ludwig above Maria, in my opinion is that Ludwig drops his weapon right after the fight. It was my personal favorite weapon to use in that game, so the reward, the music, and the attacks were flawless for me.

      Same experience, I would feel relief gettingto second phase cause now i knew I'd won

  • @PaladinfffLeeroy
    @PaladinfffLeeroy Před 7 lety +58

    From my own experiences I never had any trouble with the second phase of Ludwig because of the return to order, the return to swordfighting which I had been so specialized in throughout all of the souls games and him not really having delayed attacks that always fuck me over (Blue Smelter Demon, looking at you!).
    His moveset during the first phase was way harder for me to predict and I got fucked over many many times in that phase, but once that was over I could pretty easily beat him afterwards.
    Enough about that though, my top 10 would likely be looking like this:
    1). Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower
    I absolutely loved this fight, from the character that Maria is and the lore behind it to the particle systems that make the fight look so incredibly awesome. The fight itself is thrilling and bloodpumping (pun intended). Even the location feels fucking epic, a top a giant cathedral inside the central clocktower residing inside an alternate dimension in which experimentations are being held without consent from the outside world. Truly epic.
    2). Knight Artorias
    Probably the best fight in Dark Souls for me. He's fast, he's furious, he's strong as fuck, yet it is still a fair one on one fight.
    It feels like an encounter instead of someone waiting for you inside an arena for all eternity until you arrive and on top of that you caught him at a bad time. The time when he the corruption of the abyss finally overtook him. You can see it in his animations, he is bewildered of the corruption suddenly grasping for him and then it takes him and he turns completely bonkers.
    3). Soul of Cinder
    There could not have been a final boss more suited to conclude the entire series of Dark Souls. A boss that embodies all of the players who have ever beaten Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 combined in one fight. And when the fight seems almost over a familiar theme starts to play and you are now fighting the very first of the Lords of Cinder, Gwyn.
    4). Gehrman, The First Hunter
    Epic boss arena, check.
    Epic boss character, Check.
    Epic bossfight that makes your blood boil? CHECK.
    I love Gehrman as a character and all of the shit he has been through really makes me empathize with the poor fellow.
    5). Ludwig, The Accursed/The Holy Blade
    A truly gruesome boss arena filled with blood and corpses (of which, some are still alive) and then you see that horse-man-beast crossbreed monstrocity heading your way. An amazing setting that really puts the Hor(se) in Horror.
    First fight feels like an anal rodeo on bloodroids and when the second phase starts boy oh boy that redeo feeling is kicked into overdrive by the epice and probably best theme song in any Souls game.
    6). The Nameless King
    This was probably the best and most epic fight in Dark Souls 3. Prince Lothric and his brother were really epic too but overshadowed by the existence of Lady Maria and by the existence of The Nameless King because all three of these have somewhat the same style of setting. A final location, atop of a huge structure, be it a gianormous cathedral full of fucked up experiments, a huge castle that would put the kings of old to shame OR ON TOP OF THE FUCKING CLOUDS!!!
    The first phase was annoying but thrilling to master and then when you finally have the feel for the first phase, Gwyns firstborn who swore allegiance with the Ancient Dragons comes swooping in for your booty.
    7). Manus Father of the Ayss
    Many people don't really like Manus, but I LOVE his design. He looks so freaking epic with all the weird archways in his back that have glowing red eyes in them, coming out from the Dark to kick your ass. Not only does he look cool but I liked the fight as well, it was thrilling to fight him and I was always at the edge of my seat against him.
    The value that Dark Souls 2 gave that fight was also a pretty damn nice addition. You defeating Manus sparked all of the later kings' events in the time between Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2. Pretty sick if you ask me.
    8). Father Gascoigne
    Probably an overlooked gem of a fight. This fight is probably the first difficulty curve in Bloodborne that most players need to overcome and with good reason. This fight prepares you for what is coming later in the game by teaching you all of the essentials of being a hunter. Timing, Use of terrain, bosses with multiple phases to the fight, parrying.
    And then there is the theme song and lore behind him. I really like the tie between little girl gascoigne and Father Gascoigne. The music box carries a sample of one of my favorite themes in Bloodborne, Lulliby for Mergo.
    9).Fume Knight
    Oh man, I have tried so hard and got so far on this fight, but in the end it didn't really matter because he fucked me in the ass so hard that I had a sore butthole for 2 weeks straight. The lore behind him being the right hand of King Vendrick and his ties to Velstadt (Whom I also hold pretty high up, but who's fight was just too damn easy. I just love my Paladin characters in Souls okay...Garl Vinland is pretty epic too).
    The Fume knight was the hardest but also best fight in Dark Souls 2 for me. Sir Alonne was epic too but I liked Fume Knight just a tad bit better because the area leading up to Alonne left me with a super sour taste of uncreative re-use and lame looking environment that was all too common in probably ALL of the "Challenge Cancer Area's (Don't get me started on those abominations...).
    The addition of the collecting aspect with the smelter wedges etc is also another plus for Raime/Fume Knight, because I myself love exploring all the nooks and crannies of the world.
    10). Flamelurker
    Repeat what I wrote about the Fume Knight leaving me with a sore asshole for 2 weeks and add 2 more weeks to it.
    The Flamelurker is on here because that boss caused me so much trouble the first time I played Demon's Souls (Which happened to also be my first Souls Game).
    That boss will slowly throughout the fight increase it's amount of attacks and aggressiveness to a point where healing could only be done when there is an object between Flamelurker and you. Beating him was probably the most satisfying feeling of victory and accomplishment that I have ever felt and was the root of me wanting more and more of what the Souls had to offer.
    Honourable mentions:
    11). Smough and Ornstein (Yea, that's right. Even though many many people claim this to be their favorite fight because of how difficult it was or how cool it was etc. I don't really feel the same way. The slot of super satisfaction after a fight was already filled by Flamelurker and I like other fights, like Artorias and Manus better. I will not deny the awesomeness that is Biggie and Smalls, Snorlax and Pikachu, etc... But they are slightly less cool than Arty and M'anus. Smough and Ornstein will always be the most iconic bossfight in the Souls games and I give it all the credit for it. It certainly is the best gank fight in the Souls games.
    12). Sir Alonne
    Sir Alonne comes a little bit short right under the top 10 even though his fight was pretty damn amazing. It is probably the best duel like fight in Dark Souls 2 but I like the Fume Knight a bit better because of his relation to Velstadt and Vendrikc while Alonne has more to do with the Iron King whom I don't really care about. I also liked the fight with Fume Knight/Raime, better because of collecting aspect that the Smelter Wedges add to the fight.
    13). Black Dragon Kalameet
    Black Dragon Kalameet is one of my favorite fights in Dark Souls because the fight reminds me of all the time I spent in Monster Hunter and also feels like a slight nod to Monster Hunter because of how similar the fight feels. Trust me I've spent more than 1200 hours on Monster Hunter, I know my dragon battles.
    14). Foold's Idol
    This one is a bit odd to put here but I really enjoyed every single bit of this puzzle oriented bossfight, from not stepping into the traps on the floor and remembering where the traps spawn to finding out which Fool's Idol the actual boss is.
    I love the dark style of the Tower of Latria and it fits perfectly with the theme of the boss.
    The fight itself might not be as thrilling as most fights on the list but I really enjoy fighting it.

      Paladin Leeroy Ok, I might be the only one, but I found Father Gascoigne to be a ridiculously easy fight and I don't consider myself at all good at these games. Without any research or prior knowledge during my first attempt I was only hit twice during the first phase and parried nearly everything. The second phase was harder but still not at all difficult.

    The amazing this is that you'll come across different lists every time you ask a different souls/bloodborne fan. Personally, Artorias will always be the pinnacle of a souls fight (although I admit part of that is first impression impact and nostalgia) followed closely by Lady Maria and then Abyss Watchers. I have a blast every time I need to fight these guys.
    Honorable mentions are Gael and the Orphan coz they're the hardest imo as well as the most heartbreaking to fight given their lore and them symbolizing the end of their respective game.
