Accelerator pedal - 40%-70% Vehicle speed - 25-75mph, repeating slow acceleration within the area. Driving time - 5 minutes or more." Well, I guess you dont need to read the manual now, lol. Thats all that it says. It gives some graphs too. I tried the highway one for more than 5 minutes, once. Didnt work. The second option has worked several times for me. I just wish i read the manual sooner instead of listening to others because I was trying to keep the throttle at exactly 50% which was kind of hard ( though I got better at it) and hard on my brakes. This is just slow acceleration and deceleration. Much easier. Its still a pain in the ass though. I just need a tune with a better fuel pump. Thank you for your video!
I never bothered trying to do the octane learning because I just got a stage 1 tune within a couple of months after getting the car. Now octane learning is disabled and I get full Boost without having to even use NGS and I'm getting a 22 PSI. I still haven't done any 0-60 runs yet but I will soon. Now my car is how it should have come from the factory in my opinion and I'm very happy with it.
This happens to me every time. I had no idea how hard it is to drive above 70 mph for five consecutive minutes. Like clockwork, I’ll be at 4 minutes and change and traffic will bunch up for no reason and drop me out of the speed minimum.
Same here with Shell if at all possible. I swear it runs better on it. Anyways, I agree with all your points. I had a lot of heated exchanges about this on FB with some saying it made no changes to the car. I'm 33,xxx miles into ownership and it has definitely been frustrating. While I do live in a rural area and don't have to worry about traffic as much, it is a hilly, curvy area and sometimes is tough to maintain 8th gear for that long without bogging the engine. Neither I nor anyone I've talked to have been successful in learning with the slower method either. I assumed that's why you didn't even mention it.
I feel ya! And yeah, I didn’t mention the other method both because no one I know of has ever gotten it to work and frankly I never understood it even after reading it multiple times.

Eventually planning on a tune to cure it. Haven't done any changes to the car except for getting a winter setup and running the same conti's you are.
It sucks for sure, I have to get on the interstate and go 10 minutes one-way then turn around and come 10 minutes back completely out of my way. I wish they had some kind of a switch or button. I use Costco 93 octane and it works great every time I do the procedure.
Exactly. A minimum of 20 minutes of wasted time. I edited out a similar idea in my video where I was pleading to tuners to make a button to instantly trick the ECU into thinking it’s octane tuned. I may reach out to one with the idea. I think it’d be a big seller.
I would buy it. It would pay for itself pretty quickly considering the 20 minute drive I wouldn’t have to take on every fill up. I have gotten to the point where I don’t even do it unless it’s on a weekend.
Octane learning is some bunk. It took an 8th tank of gas to learn, and as soon as I shut off the vehicle, it reset. You are better off with a dedicated tune or an ECU swap.
Yep MT owner here. Only run 93 octane and only see 15 to 16 lb s. I saw 18 lb after break in period but then one time I was going wide open throttle and the car just fell flat on its face like it got knock and pulled timing. ever since that happened I only see 15 to 16 lbs no matter what I do. Car feels slow. 230 to 240 wheel horsepower Is not much out of a 3,200 lb vehicle.
I suspect those wheels are lighter than the factory wheels and helped give you a small boost over stock. Great runs though! I'd love to get mine in the 12's.
Thanks! Yes, the wheel and tire combo knocked 9lbs off each corner, so they definitely help, but at the same time the Continental tires aren’t as grippy as the stock Michelins. Still I’ll take the weight savings for a little less grip.
Interesting Cool to know. Once mine comes in, this shouldn't be a problem. I work in the next State. So doesn't 70 mph plus for 10 minutes is no issues. After i fill up, im right on the highway heading to work.
I am going to have to map out the route now. For the 2023 model, it is a bit easier? For DCT (which I have), it's 8th gear, 68mph-99mph, preferably cruise control, for 5+ minutes. When you can't have that constant speed it gives guidance of 4th or 5th gear fixed, 40%-70% on the accelerator peddle, 25-75 mph repeating slow acceleration within the area, and for 5+ minutes. They give a graph showing of octane learning when high and constant speed is not available. It is going up and down in vehicle speed, in 4th or 5th gear, fluctuating the pedal from 40% to 70%..
This is why we all need to get our EN tuned lol luckily my car stays in octane learning most of the time here in Texas. I heard weather, roads and throttle response have a factor in it. The few times my car goes back to limp mode it damn near makes me wanna sell it , too slow.

In other words, you successfully octane-learned the ECU and we’re achieving 18-19 lbs boost, and then, after turning the car off going to drive it again, boost was being limited to 15-16 psi? This just happened with my car. Filled up Saturday night on way home after using all the dealer-supplied fuel, with which I was getting full boost. Drove the car to work the next day, successfully octane-learned it on the way to work with the 70+ MPH cruise control method (was getting full boost on way home from work). Fast forward to today, I take the N out to hit some backroads around here and it’s limiting boost to 15-16 psi. Tried getting out on I-40 and setting cruise control to above 70 mph for 5 minutes. Didn’t work. Tried again for another 5 minutes. Still didn’t work. It must require longer than five minutes. The way the owners manual is worded, it actually does sort of say five minutes would be the minimum. I do wonder if the conditions in which I was driving today factored in and the ECU limited boost. It would be cool to talk with the engineer who designed the system to get a better understanding of how it works.
@@johnmpifer I’ve never noticed that happening, but it’s possible I haven’t paid that much attention to it. Also, keep in mind the turbo boost can vary depending on temp/humidity, so maybe it was cooler the night you octane learned making the full boost, but hotter the next day so it pulled some. Just a guess.

It was probably about 75° when I did the octane learning, and then yesterday when I went out to hit some backroads, it was over 90°. However, it was also over 90° when I drove home the afternoon after I did the octane learning, so IDK.
Yes, the first time I achieved octane learning, I remember the acceleration feeling much more forceful and holding through the powerband. It felt like a different car.

If you can even get your car to octane learn, there's a bunch of us that can't even get it to octane learn. I mean the manual says that you have to be over 20% throttle at least 65 mph for 5 minutes When I have cruise set at 65 mph I'm only at like 10 to 11% throttle😂
So, does it octane learn every time you follow the octane learning procedure, or only after a fill? What if you don't top off your tank, will it not try to octane learn? What all triggers it to octane learn? Also, what if you can't mediately get on the highway after fueling, will it just wait until you do the procedure?
My understanding is it will only octane learn after filling your tank with gas. I don’t know if that means completely or just adding gas. I always fill it completely up.
I've been doing it in 4th gear at exactly 50% throttle, between 25-75mph. I start as close to 25mph as possible and hold it for at least 5 seconds. Then repeat a whole bunch of times. I use this country road that's maybe a couple miles long, back and forth. It's hard but I've gotten better at it for sure. It's obviously easiest in eco-mode. Last time, it even stayed learned through the next day. That did not happen the first time. I have no idea why. The car is SO much more fun, in my opinion, with OL. And it's such a pain in the ass to have to do this procedure. Also, I hate saying, "Octane Learned." It's almost worse than "N Grin Shift." LOL, wtf? I'm happy I have a stick. Oh yeah, it never starts just doing it after my runs. It always seems to be after the car is shut down for a while. Ill try it. Wont succeed. Go home. And a few hours later, go to the store or something, and Ill notice its feeling strong and check out my psi, and ill hit 19 in 3rd gear. Ive even tried shutting the car down for a little after an attempt and it doesnt work then, either. So yeah, frustrating. I wish there was some sort of indicator. Watch, later models will have something way better and easier, damn it. Ill just have to get a tune, I guess 🤷♂️
I hate octane learning. Sometimes I do it and it doesn't happen. I buy nothing but high-octane gas - usually the most expensive stuff. Still, octane learning is this weird thing that ai pursue, but don't always even achieve. That alone is a reason to consider a tune.
Would this be something to worry about just owning the EN for a Daily Driver? I've owned a 2020 Limited Elantra before and want to get back into one but willing to sacrifice some Gas mileage for some fun.
Should you octane learn before the the engine is broken in. I just bought a new 2023 N just curious. The owner's manual says break in period is around I think around 900 miles
Well, with engine break-in you’re not supposed to go over 4,500 RPM, so octane learning really is irrelevant because you’re only going to notice it when going wide open throttle and getting up higher in the RPM range. I’d wait until after the 600 mile break-in period.
Its quite anoyying, as someone who never needs to use the highway my car randomly octane learns itself when only a quarter of the tank remains so it feels like im wasting money when I don't see the effects of 93 octane untill its time to fill up.
Yeah I bet that’d be frustrating. Thankfully I do use the highway from time to time, so it’s not completely out of my way to fill up before going for a drive, but I still feel like there must be a better way they could’ve designed the system.
Does anyone know if you still have to octane learn when running a tune? I am on a JB4 piggyback on my Kona N but I had no idea if this process still occurs, or needs to occur. All comes back to this system being overly complicated, even when stock, and the lack of notification(s) for this process. Really annoying part that detracts from such a great car. I wish there was an option in the settings to just select what octane you used, rather than this convoluted method.
Phoenix area in Arizona currently has the most expensive gas in the country. Even more than LA, Chicago, and NYC. There's no way in hell i'm paying for premium. Regular is already ridiculous. I bought this car, and my previous KIA Optima SX turbo BECAUSE you can use regular gas.
I mean you can do that, but you’re definitely not going get the most performance out of the engine. The detergents they put in premium gas will help keep your injectors clean too, so as per the manual you should add fuel injector cleaner. This video was made for those of us trying to get the most out of the Elantra N. You’re free to have your own agenda.

Agreed. Like any other older car the PCM detects what octane just by giving the car a little bit of knock if you have a lower octane in the car. If you run higher octane it's happy and you get good power. Very simple. This car being an N car, it should be premium only.
@@4drturbo85 the EN probably still does this to determine between 87 and 91 and adjust power accordingly but it probably just wants to be extra safe about giving you an additional 3-4 extra PSI of boost
I’m very frustrated with it, lol. I’m not sure what I always do wrong, but I have plenty of open road around me and time to drive being that I commute to work every day and it still seems that I am unable to get octane learning to work correctly. Then randomly out of nowhere about halfway through my tank it seems to kick in and I’m getting 18 to 19 pounds of boost. Do I need to stop and restart the car after I do the 10 minute drive at 70 or above and fixed sixth?
Dang sorry to hear that. No, you shouldn’t have to turn the car off and back on. I have heard octane learning is harder to get right in the 6 speed. I wish I had an answer.
I wish I could just tell the car what octane gas I have in it. I was going to buy one of these cars but until I learned of this BS I'm really considering another option.

Just make sure the 18” wheels you buy have a width, offset and center bore size that will work with the Elantra N. Your best bet is buying or at least researching them from an online retailer like Tire Rack that will only show you wheels that will fit your model car.
It’d do quite the opposite. 93 octane burns cleaner. 87 will eventually gunk things up. Look in the owners manual. It says if you use 87, you’re supposed to run a fuel additive through the car every xxxx miles for that exact reason. I personally would never run 87 in mine unless it was absolutely necessary because premium wasn’t available.
its not that hard. at least not for me. i live in California and drive from the i.e. to la for work and put 91 gas in my dct and it have plenty of room to drive 70 for well over the time frame. i guess for others it sucks to suck
Fill up, put in ECO mode, drive on highway at 70mph or above in 8th gear for 10 minutes. I put mine in manual mode so it holds in 8th gear and doesn’t downshift if I encounter a hill.

@@animaljoe1 normal mode is supposed to work as well, but by habit I throw it into ECO. I have not tried the other method because to me it just seems too confusing and like there’s too many factors to work out.

Because here in Puerto Rico I was contemplating between buying and Elantra N 2024 or a Mustang Ecoboost 2024 .But is that it the case I think I am better with the Mustang Ecoboost 2024 .
@@romankevin12 the Elantra N is the top model. The Elantra N-Line is the model below it. Elantra N = 276hp, Elantra N-Line = 200hp. The N competes against the Civic Type R. The N-Line competes against the Civic SI.

N75 motorsports on a spare ECU with the 7K redline. I'm glad it got it when I did because now the price is $200 more.

Have the dealer look at it and fix it

I have a 1.5 tune ECM and believe octane learning is not operating. Car is absolute missile.
Octane learning is only on non-tuned Elantra N’s.

I use this country road that's maybe a couple miles long, back and forth. It's hard but I've gotten better at it for sure. It's obviously easiest in eco-mode.
Last time, it even stayed learned through the next day. That did not happen the first time. I have no idea why.
The car is SO much more fun, in my opinion, with OL. And it's such a pain in the ass to have to do this procedure.
Also, I hate saying, "Octane Learned." It's almost worse than "N Grin Shift." LOL, wtf? I'm happy I have a stick.
Oh yeah, it never starts just doing it after my runs. It always seems to be after the car is shut down for a while. Ill try it. Wont succeed. Go home. And a few hours later, go to the store or something, and Ill notice its feeling strong and check out my psi, and ill hit 19 in 3rd gear.
Ive even tried shutting the car down for a little after an attempt and it doesnt work then, either. So yeah, frustrating. I wish there was some sort of indicator.
Watch, later models will have something way better and easier, damn it. Ill just have to get a tune, I guess 🤷♂️
I hate octane learning. Sometimes I do it and it doesn't happen. I buy nothing but high-octane gas - usually the most expensive stuff. Still, octane learning is this weird thing that ai pursue, but don't always even achieve. That alone is a reason to consider a tune.
I 100% agree. I will likely get a tune at some point just so I don’t have to deal with it any more.

Would this be something to worry about just owning the EN for a Daily Driver? I've owned a 2020 Limited Elantra before and want to get back into one but willing to sacrifice some Gas mileage for some fun.
Nah, it’s nothing to worry about as a daily. Even without it being octane learned it’s silly fast and fun.
I used to get it every day easy but ever since someone rear ended me and I got my car back it hasn’t done it. It sat for 7 weeks maybe that’s why?

Should you octane learn before the the engine is broken in. I just bought a new 2023 N just curious. The owner's manual says break in period is around I think around 900 miles
Well, with engine break-in you’re not supposed to go over 4,500 RPM, so octane learning really is irrelevant because you’re only going to notice it when going wide open throttle and getting up higher in the RPM range. I’d wait until after the 600 mile break-in period.
Its quite anoyying, as someone who never needs to use the highway my car randomly octane learns itself when only a quarter of the tank remains so it feels like im wasting money when I don't see the effects of 93 octane untill its time to fill up.
Yeah I bet that’d be frustrating. Thankfully I do use the highway from time to time, so it’s not completely out of my way to fill up before going for a drive, but I still feel like there must be a better way they could’ve designed the system.
The additives helps clean your injectors and overall better for your motor so you’re still getting benefits

Does anyone know if you still have to octane learn when running a tune? I am on a JB4 piggyback on my Kona N but I had no idea if this process still occurs, or needs to occur.
All comes back to this system being overly complicated, even when stock, and the lack of notification(s) for this process. Really annoying part that detracts from such a great car. I wish there was an option in the settings to just select what octane you used, rather than this convoluted method.

Phoenix area in Arizona currently has the most expensive gas in the country. Even more than LA, Chicago, and NYC. There's no way in hell i'm paying for premium. Regular is already ridiculous. I bought this car, and my previous KIA Optima SX turbo BECAUSE you can use regular gas.
I mean you can do that, but you’re definitely not going get the most performance out of the engine. The detergents they put in premium gas will help keep your injectors clean too, so as per the manual you should add fuel injector cleaner. This video was made for those of us trying to get the most out of the Elantra N. You’re free to have your own agenda.

I also use Top-Tier gas as it is (QT, 76, Shell, Chevron or whatever.) It's not an "agenda." I'd just rather not waste money on premium for no real reason.

Agreed. Like any other older car the PCM detects what octane just by giving the car a little bit of knock if you have a lower octane in the car. If you run higher octane it's happy and you get good power. Very simple. This car being an N car, it should be premium only.
@@4drturbo85 the EN probably still does this to determine between 87 and 91 and adjust power accordingly but it probably just wants to be extra safe about giving you an additional 3-4 extra PSI of boost
I’m very frustrated with it, lol. I’m not sure what I always do wrong, but I have plenty of open road around me and time to drive being that I commute to work every day and it still seems that I am unable to get octane learning to work correctly. Then randomly out of nowhere about halfway through my tank it seems to kick in and I’m getting 18 to 19 pounds of boost. Do I need to stop and restart the car after I do the 10 minute drive at 70 or above and fixed sixth?

Yes it’s annoying, but it shouldn’t deter you from buying the car. It’s still plenty quick and fun even if not octane learned.

My normal driving to and from work doesn’t allow me to do highway octane learning. Only option I might have is the 4th or 5th gear learning. Can anyone help or explain to me better how to do it. I can’t seem to get it

Just make sure the 18” wheels you buy have a width, offset and center bore size that will work with the Elantra N. Your best bet is buying or at least researching them from an online retailer like Tire Rack that will only show you wheels that will fit your model car.

It’d do quite the opposite. 93 octane burns cleaner. 87 will eventually gunk things up. Look in the owners manual. It says if you use 87, you’re supposed to run a fuel additive through the car every xxxx miles for that exact reason. I personally would never run 87 in mine unless it was absolutely necessary because premium wasn’t available.

its not that hard. at least not for me. i live in California and drive from the i.e. to la for work and put 91 gas in my dct and it have plenty of room to drive 70 for well over the time frame. i guess for others it sucks to suck

What method do you use to octane learn that it works for you? I can never ever get this crap to work
Fill up, put in ECO mode, drive on highway at 70mph or above in 8th gear for 10 minutes. I put mine in manual mode so it holds in 8th gear and doesn’t downshift if I encounter a hill.

@@animaljoe1 normal mode is supposed to work as well, but by habit I throw it into ECO. I have not tried the other method because to me it just seems too confusing and like there’s too many factors to work out.

@@romankevin12 the Elantra N is the top model. The Elantra N-Line is the model below it. Elantra N = 276hp, Elantra N-Line = 200hp. The N competes against the Civic Type R. The N-Line competes against the Civic SI.

@@kodyking3090Increasing tank size from 12 gallons to, say, 15 gallons, would increase weight very little, and would increase range by at least 60 miles (probably more), giving a max range of closer to 400 miles, instead of the just over 300 miles of the current tank size.
And if one were concerned about the weight of the 3 extra gallons (about 18 lbs), then just partially fill the tank.
