How to Build a Rolling Workbench for your Garage in One Day! [$100 build]

- A rolling workbench for my garage is something I've wanted for a long time. I was able to build the wooden workbench in about six hours by myself and it has already gotten a lot of use! Because of the casters I'm using I'm able to make the workbench rolling or totally stable. If you want to recreate this work bench, I included the cut list at the bottom of the video description. Also, if anyone has tips for organizing my pegboard, I'd love to hear them!

Recreate this workbench with my lumber and cut list:
(1) 4" x 4" x 10' board - cut four 28" long pieces for legs
(4) 2" x 4" x 10' boards - cut four 75" long pieces and four 17" long pieces to make the box and four 20.5" long pieces for supports.
(6) 1" x 10" x 8' boards - cut three 85" long for top and three 82" long for bottom.
I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great czcams.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

Cover your bench with a piece of 1/4 ply or hardboard. When it gets glue, stained etc to where you need a new top. Replace it. The 1X 10 top will stay in good shape until you hand it down to one of your kids.
i was going to suggest the same thing, much cheaper to replace the ply or hard-board topper than redoing the whole top

Getting your son involved is commendable. I learned to love do it yourself projects following my dad around the garage.
I gotta tell you something. I've been a carpenter for 39 years. I have been mulling over building one of these for myself for a long time. I've probably watched every darned video on youtube featuring a rolling workbench design. This is the one I settled on. Who knew I should have come here to watch you build it barefoot and in your pj's. Great design. Simple, strong, effective. Thank you for posting this. The only difference in my case is that I'm going to use retractable wheels so I can roll it out and have it sit on the legs.
The bench looks great and functional. For storing smaller tools, I find a tool tray very useful. Just build a topless wood box about 5 inches deep and 5-8 inches wide. Screw it onto the back in three places. Keep the length short enough that you have at least 4 inches of clearance on both ends of the bench. You can drill or cut tool holding holes in the bottom of it if desired.
Thank you Melissa. I made the bench but added a fold out shelf for my table saw with the bed of the saw the same height as the workbench top to use as an outfeed table. Great addition to my one car garage.
Hi Melissa. Just seen this video. This may have been mentioned already. When measuring for your short cross pieces always measure from the ends by the legs where nothing can be bowed. That will pull the long rails in line with the ends. Great video. You explain things nice. I enjoy them.

I stopped with peg boards a few years ago, they always warp the hardware falls out and just frustrating. Gone nearly all French Cleat systems. Not bad to make with just a table saw. Then you can build shelves, brackets, cabinets, anything you can dream up to hold any thing you want. Took the idea from garage into our house pantry as well. Super flexible and module.
I want you to know that I just built this table after watching how you did it. The only thing I did differently is to use MDF as the top and bottom shelf, and shortly will add sides and a back with the same type of MDF.
I am then going to add doors to the front. It was fun building it! I never did this type of thing before. I'll be using it as a workbench and also as an outfeed table for my new table saw.

Love it! It will be nice to get off the ground. I foresee the back(old front) of that garage getting bumped out so you can put a shop in and add some more tools. It would also be a great build to document and could give you tons of new material. Great job, Keep up the hard work.

I mounted my Kreg Jig on a 1 foot by two feet piece of plywood. I just clamp it to the top of my bench when I need it and tuck in under my bench when not in use. Makes the jig easier to take out and use.
I had some 3/4" plywood I needed to do something with so I googled simple workbench which brought me here. I liked your design and how you burned your scrap lumber so I built one today. Thanks for the video!

Nice job. I installed a floating shelf on the wall below the pegboard that is just flush above the workbench so that when you pull the workbench away the items stay on the shelf and not on the workbench. That works great for screws, chargers, etc.
Absolutely amazing! Fed the kids, put them to bed, built a workbench in one day and made it look easy! You are a credit to your gender!
Cover the sides of your rolling workbench with plywood and use hangers to hold your most used tools including drop cords. Take a scrap 1X3X depth of table screw to sides mentioned above, drill holes and make screwdriver holder.

What I like most about your videos is that you have minimal tools, you have to work around bikes and pool noodles, just like 90% of the DIY audience that look for videos like this. There's another series of videos that show how to build a work bench with complex joints, laminated big money lumber, (I think it's 4 parts, and it took 4 weeks to build), but your work bench is perfect for most of us.
As far as hanging your tools, I built a shelf above my work bench with wide notches in the front and just slide them in, with a battery charging station right below them.

I love the workbench. I built one similar, but didn't think to add the casters... That's such a great idea. Mine is up against a wall and is a real pain to move.
Great looking bench! Screw a sacrificial sheet for 1/4 inch plywood on top and you have a seamless top that you can replace when it gets worn out.

A quick tip for Your miter saw! Once You have it cutting square to Your satisfaction, clamp a board to the fence make a cut, prior to removing the board, measure back from the cut edge 1" and make a mark on the table! Square a line across the table through the mark! Now instead of having to hold a tape measure and the work to line up a cut, You just measure and mark the work burning(minus) the 1", line this up with the mark on the table for perfect results every time! Be certain to repeat the process from the opposite side of the blade! This also makes it easier to set up a stop block for multiple cuts! Measure the work(don't forget to burn the 1"), match the marks for the table and work, clamp the work, clamp a stop block in place and voile ! Only measure one piece out of multiple similar cuts! Just getting rid of my old one with old classic barn wood.built very much the same but weighs about 400 lbs. My smaller 5 foot instead of 8 makes a little more room for everything. think I'm gonna make more of a cart to wheel outside to prevent wood dust in the garage. Someone gave me one and I was planning on casters. Great job. Thanks ! :)

Nice build of the rolling bench. For the peg board just go to Maynard's and buy a sheet or two of pegboard. Paint it with white primer. Then use the peg board for several months to see what you want to hang and where. For the rest of the open spaces I would staple in some batts to provide sound barrier from the interior of the house. Then screw in pine boards 1 X 6 horizontally. To those boards you can buy and hang hooks for rakes, broom, bikes, etc. The 3/4 pine will provide enough depth to provide holding power. Do it in sections because you will change your mind on where you want stuff. You could use shiplap instead of pine, but that's your choice. You could also just drywall the bottom two feet of the wall to save money. One other thought - You could add a 3/4 top of MDF or plywood. When it gets beat up just replace the top.

Thanks for posting this workbench build. I love the mobility with locking wheels. Above bench storage is presents interesting design challenges. Consider a modified French Cleat system for pegboard. You might be able borrow ideas form pegboard shelf system from some kitchen storage ideas too.
The workbench you made it looks nice and solid. Moreover, the instructions are coherent and simple.

Your very first workbench build turned out better than almost everyone’s I’ve seen in my life! Awesome job of visualization and completion of project and all in a day while raising kids at the same time . Reminds me of me . You should invest in a nice rolling tool chest and store tools in it . While pegging odd tools on wall. Well maybe not I only do because I live in earthquake country . And i can spend less time looking at a wall full of tools by finding them in specific drawers easier I think ? Also I have spacial issues ( or lack of) single car garage . Sucks but not unless you use every trick possible to maximize. Every tool has mounting ability on multiple rolling benches . And nothing I don’t like more than pulling all tools out to build in driveway . Making mess and pulling tools in to a clean garage. Can’t wait to see what you do next .

I have recently transitioned from peg board to French cleats. BEST MOVE EVER for my garage/shop.
I like that this woman makes sure the pieces are fitted SQUARE. There are many DIYers who just can't wrap their heads around that simple concept.

Hey, I would like to offer a suggestion to you for the workbench! If you were to buy a sheet of 1/2" or 3/4" Plywood and cut it to fit the top side, it would act as a sacrificial surface that can be replaced easily when damaged or when you want to use it as a extra serving table! Good luck!
Not a bad idea!! I guess I figured the 1 x 10's were already sacrificial and I could easily replace if I wanted it to look better. 😏

It is awesome that craftsmanship still lives on in the younger generation. The bench turned out great!😃. The only thing I would add is a 4 plex electrical box with a 25 foot cord, so you can use it where needed. That way you do not need to use extension cords. All of your electrical devices will plug into the bench. Just make sure to get a qualified electrician to make it for you.
I thought my next project would be my walk in closet but I NEED this workbench ASAP. Thanks for the materials list....I’m still intimidated by figuring out materials needed and this is such a great help.
You can do it! I don't consider myself a great woodworker by any means and I think this project went smoother than most of mine.

I just finished doing this bench. I want to thank you. I am just starting to be a handyman so mine came out about 97% accurate. I finally got to use my kreg and it made things so easy. As far as the price it came out to $199.00 for the wood at Home Depot . I guess the east coast is a little expensive. Still worth it. Thank you fir the video.

First thing I did to my garage was insulated and drywall. It made a huge difference in comfort and visual appeal. Next, I put up adjustable shelves. Workbench came third. If I could do it over, I would have started by putting an epoxy finish on the concrete floor.
