Hi, Annie, and hi Sofia! Thank you both! Everything is traditional Kazakh. Dombra. Performing this song means so much to Dimash.
The poem was written by a Kazakh writer, poet, scientist and teacher Magzhan Zhumabayev (1893-1938), who was arrested and sent to prison under the Soviet regime. In the prison, they told him his wife had left him. He wrote this song about his love and his sadness. It turned out that his wife never left him (he had been lied to) and they were reunited in 1936, when he was released from prison. Unfortunately, their happiness did not last long, he was again arrested and executed in 1938 as an enemy of the state. The author's nickname for her was Daididau. Originally thought to be a folk song, it is now considered a quintessential Kazakh song. Here's a translation of the poem:
I wrote a letter to you my dear

Hello, Sofia, Anna. The main goal of Dimash at the competition is to introduce people to the Kazakh folk art. National costumes, instruments, a song in the native Kazakh language.
