The worst pain? I have two emotional and one physical - the appendicitis I thought was bad constipation for two weeks so went untreated and turned sepsis and gangrenous and had only a 10% survival chance was pretty bad. But other than that, the death of my mom losing a lot of my safety net relationships and lost a romantic relationship all while becoming homeless and dealing with an out of control drug addiction problem all at the same time was definitely more painful and traumatic honestly, considering I am still dealing with the emotional damage that did to me now 8 years later. Give me the appendicitis again because that was just slightly alarming and not so much something that is going to continue to haunt me. Uggghhh
I’m 5 minutes in and I’m not sure I want to continue. These guys have covered some intense stuff and I’ve never seen them this uncomfortable with the discussion.
I had a completely different takeaway - I feel Piskor was holding a mirror the readers, putting us in the place of the Red Room viewers (spending money to look at murder and depravity). I completely understand the conclusion that it’s all style without a solid story (or stories), but I think that may have been intentional. The individual issues (I don’t know about the trade) have Piskor backpieces about the creation of the stories, and reading those had me come to the conclusion that I did. To read it as just surface-level gore and exploitation, while valid (who doesn’t love some good exploitation horror once in a while), does sell the work and Piskor a little short. Most painful thing - yeah, I’m with Troy - kidney stones are no joke. While I believe I was spared the pain of their passing (I was pumped full of painkillers at the ER), even before that, the kidney pain itself is debilitating.
I won't argue that there is more below the surface than we gave it credit for. But on a surface level read- it really didn't captivate me or make me want to keep going. It felt a bit like a one-trick pony that was trying to recapture the rebel comics spirit of Faust that Ed grew up on, but without anything terribly compelling to wrap it around. I do give him all the credit in the world for the blood, sweat and tears he put into it- I just wish it had more to say. And having read the second volume shortly after the recording, I found even less to like on that one.
Cartoonist Kayfabe was solid so I figured i'd pick up the trade. Definitely good for spooky season. that picture of the dude on the pointed medieval torture machine thing with cinderblocks chained to his arms and legs made me wince..YIKES
Yeah- YT has been really finicky with it's notifications lately- I had to go into my subs and customize it to show me "all updates" from my creators. Otherwise it defaults to just whatever the hell YT wants to show you... which believe it or not, isn't always our channel ;)
The most painful thing I think I went through aside from the cop out of mental illness, Is appendicitis. A terrible time compounded by when I was in the hospital fasting before my operation, all that was on the TV were cooking channels and restaurant food. Oh also I respect Red Room, even if I probably will never willingly read it. And we need more fun wholesome nice comics for Troy. Throw him a bone.
I read the FCBD issue and was both terrified/disgusted and very interested honestly. Art felt so atmospheric - it was a different kind of grotesque I hadn’t seen in comics before I felt there was enough intrigue in that FCBD issue as well that made me wanna read more and I still do honestly
I can’t believe that. It’s literally the same premise of his passion project comic. He’d have to have had at least a passing interest or curiosity in it!
@@ImperiusRexsuper late reply here but I could believe Ed never saw it, the idea of red rooms have been somewhat of an urban legend for quite awhile! RIP EP
I think the similarities to Red Room and Hostel are superficial at best. They both have to do with snuff/torture, and both creators researched similar things on or about the dark web, but i feel like they're different beasts entirely
Enjoyed Blood Stained Teeth, I personally thought Batman Reptillian was fantastic. Got the Paul Dini Omnibus but not yet read it, heard good things about it though! Have you got the Batman No Mans Land 1 and 2 omnibuses?
I have the entire run and it sends me back to the 80s/90s. It’s mad stuff but Ed seems like a nice guy on the Kayfabe channel. (Where I discovered the book) It’s dark as hell. Is it worse than Hostel? Imagine the people making the effects in those movies. Imagine their research. His back matter tells just how much he got creeped out by limits of research.
As much as I felt like a lot of this book was shock for the sake of shock, I still feel compelled to keep up with it. I guess Ed wins in the long game... ;)
While I was impressed at the levels of depravity throughout (on top of John Gallagher's excellently cringe-inducing covers, the dynamite image in particular), I question the comic's intent. I want to give Piskor the benefit of the doubt and consider it a satire throughout the story, sometimes it feels less like satire and more at face value. Perhaps it's because I've been burnt out by the likes of Garth Ennis for a while now, but I can't help wondering if Piskor really is as cynical and angry as the faceless subscribers of the titular red room live streams. Then again, maybe I'm also influenced by how pissy he got over the backlash toward that Maus parodied cover art...
Thank you guys for making me laugh with this atrocious, god-awful abomination of a book. Read chunks of it and fucking despised it immensely. I definitely relate with Neil's faces throughout the video lol
