How to Control the Height of Your Bamboo

- Some people may want to keep their bamboo trimmed to a hedge, or maybe you have height restrictions. Maybe you prefer your particular species to remain shorter. Whatever the case may be, topping bamboo is very easy.
In this short tutorial, we demonstrate some useful tips for topping bamboo.
For most bamboo, all you will need is a pair of sharp pruning sheers.
-Always cut directly above a node
-Never cut fresh shoots (you risk killing them)
All new growth is from the ground-up with new shoots, so any cuts will be permanent.

I've been searching for the right bamboo and never knew this about the height - this just expanded my options. Thank you! 😊👍
We're so glad to help!
Man this is the first look at Bamboo and even the music is great. From across the pond ! Thank you.
Glad you like it!!
Thank you so much for your super informative video ☺ I'm a small woman and your tip for the trimming without a leddar is sooo good 👍🏻
That's great to hear! So glad it's helpful!
Thanks, that was so good. Straight forward and has made me rethink buying some bamboo. The full grown height of the golden always frightens me (small garden) but the smaller varieties are to bendy over. Nice to see how easy they are to top at the desired height.
Awesome! Glad it was inspiring. : )
I planted some Tropical Blue in the beginning of the Summer and I'm amazed at how high the new growth is!! This is a great video..will top mine maybe in 2 months.
That's so cool! Thanks for sharing!
And thanks also for watching!
Nicely produced video! Looking forward to the thinning!
Thank you!
Excellent vid thanks for sharing. Gave me confidence prior to shortening the height of my bamboo.
Awesome! Good to hear!
Wow, fantastic. I wasn't sure if you could cut them back/height but this has answered my concerns. I have 5 pots of 6ft black bamboo currently that look like they could do with repotting but I was worried they would grow too tall as I only want say 12ft. Thank you for sharing.
Of course!! Happy to help!
Thank you very much for giving me information. Thank you very much.
Of course! Glad it is helpful!
Best video on pruning so far, thank you. How can get regrown from cut bamboo? Can I put it in a bucket, let it sprout and pot it?
Thank you! No, bamboo does not propagate from cuttings like that.
Mine Down in one month ,you need to search a stem with Ariel roots
Wow those are that tall in containers … think that’s the way to go, especially for a skinny space Glad I came across this video. 💕
Yes of course! You can learn more at bamboosourcery.com/
Thank you for the info. I've been growing some different sorts of bamboo for a few years. Some parts are very thick. I'm looking for the bigger longer new grow. My question is. If I dig out the smaller growth will it encourage and free up space for newer big shoots? I have successfully removed portions in the past by cutting the rhizome and removing shoots with roots intact, to put in pots. Just not sure if this will help the remaining bamboo to get bigger or not? Thanks again mate
Yes. Any extra root mass you can give the new growth will encourage bigger shoots.
@@bamboosourcery All the bamboo is connected underground to form a colony. As this colony of "Rhizomes" gets larger, thicker shoots will emerge to catch sun rays (photosynthesis) and accommodate the increased size of water the plant can now suck up. So you want a big colony.
Cutting out smaller shoots at the base, just above ground level shouldn't hurt the colony (not making colony smaller. Any cutting to the Rhizome itself, will separate the plant into at least 2 or more different plants. (Dividing the colony into two smaller colonies) so maybe ill just take off-set from the edge of the colony(the runners) not from the middle of the pack.
@@JoshuaCussins Sounds like a good idea!
What is the name of the bamboo?
Thank you❣️❣️❣️
You're welcome! 🥰
THANKS
You're welcome!
Thank you for this great info! Do you use these cuttings or do they become compost/mulch?
We plant them elsewhere and make new plants!
Bamboo my favourite plants
Ours too!! 😍🎋💚✨
You are the only person that explains it perfectly!!! THANK YOU!!!
How would i propagate?
Thank you so much! Joe is a pro!
We propagate via rhizomes.

@@HellYeah.McKracken Hell yeah, hellyeah! Thanks for the support!
Nice👏👏👏👏👏
Makes me think what other things could I apply this trick too?
🤔🤔🤔🤔
Glad to inspire!
So, wait for them to reach their maximum height before trimming?
Correct!
Can you propagate those trimmings?
No you cannot.
I have Clumping Bamboo
We have a lot of it too. : )
Which variety do you have?
