    Leonard Susskind-theoretical physicist, one of the fathers of string theory-describes some of the extraordinary, mind-blowing implications of black holes. E.g., the holographic theory of the universe. Some of these implications touched off a long-running debate between Susskind and Stephen Hawking. Susskind gives us blow-by-blow account.

    Professor Susskind is one of my biggest hero in Physics but his interviews get a bit inconsistent with his lectures. Light does not slow down under the gravity it gets red-shifted. You would see objects falling into the black hole more and more red and not moving slower and slower. The processes happening on the falling object would appear slower and slower but we would be still able to read the object's falling speed increasing. I know that for the purpose of the interview you have to sometimes use abbreviations and shortcuts but the Speed of Light is just to important to mess around with it :/

      No. As seen from the outside, the infalling object never crosses the horizon.

      you're not very familiar with the subject matey ;). Crossing the horizon from different perspectives is still an opened question but my comment was not even remotely about that. The Speed of light in a vacuum is constant no matter which reference frame you're in. Light's speed does not get affected by the speed of emitting object or by the gravitational field or by time dilation. Instead, the wave length gets red or blue shifted.

      Nope :)
      General relativity is very unambiguous there.
      As to light slowing down, that's what redshift is. This is not about c, the fundamental speed limit on causal relationships. The oscillating electromagnetic field, like all other physical processes, slows down. That's what Lenny means. From a reference frame outside the black hole, nothing ever crosses the horizon.

    Theoretical physicst say science fiction to stupid public well. But, condensed matter physicist knows the real physics of daily life and experiment well
