    Conversations like this are so important. I had this happen to me in a D&D campaign I was playing in. My character found out, while onboard a ship, that his father died while he was away adventuring. In real life, my dad had died 3 years before. Neither I, nor my character, got to say goodbye beforehand and it really got to me. I didn’t want the DM to ret-con it, because I didn’t wanna be treated differently, but when the party went to my character’s hometown he kinda freaked out. His father died as a result of a curse brought on by powerful, new artifacts in the city’s museum. When he got the chance to confront the archeologist who had brought them, he was hell bent on revenge. The way I role-played it upset my friends and I had to explain to my friends that it had unknowingly become my own way to have closure for my dad’s sudden death.

    Just wanted to say this came at a very timely moment for me. My tabletop group just finished up a 6 month long campaign that ended in a lot of character death... literally yesterday. Although it didn't affect me that much personally, a lot of my co-players were affected and there were tears at the table. I shared this video with them to encourage some healing and support!

      I had a D&D group that ran every Friday night for over a year. When we came to the end everyone was going their separate ways and it hit us all very hard that we were not going to see one another anywhere near as often. I thought it was just me who was effected. I felt so alone the following Friday night. I felt empty and directionless. I felt like everyone had moved on and I had to go find new friends all over again, and I'm afraid of people. After a few weeks I had one of the players invite me over for dinner, and it was so good to reconnect. Turns out we were ALL effected by the abrupt stop of gaming and hanging out. So now we all get together once a month for what ever, dinner, movie, board games or a short D&D session. I was absolutely shocked at how hard this game had changed my life. I feel your players pain.

    • @kachiechan
      @kachiechan Před 6 lety +5

      That's a really sweet story ;o; I am so glad your group came back together and that you have them again! Mine actually meet up twice a week, this was just our Sunday game that happened to end! We have many more planned in the future, but it was this DM's first time at the helm and the conclusion was a little disheartening for them. The players had a fantastic time, but we got a sort of "bad ending" because we ended up with a chaotic neutral party that ended up straying pretty far from the main adventure. We could all tell it hurt the DM's feelings a bit that we didn't realize their vision. ;;

      Also, fantastic video about a topic that's nearly impossible to discuss too much. Particularly the bit about steering and retcons-after-the-fact, which are IMO excellent tools for a lot of situations like that (or even just giving oneself an IC reason to initially talk to a friend's new character and establish a connection that your character might not have sought out without a bit of steering). Your GM/s for that game sounds awesome. (Also, dead-partner-soul-bonded-to-living-partner is cool trope, I think personally. :P )

    My biggest instance of character bleed (#5 Surprise) happened when a DM literally shouted "GO TO YOUR F***KING ROOM" at me across the room ("in character" as an inn guard) so loudly the furniture vibrated. I was absolutely stunned into silence and was shaking.
    When I said I needed to leave, he just asked me "Are you triggered or something?" and later said "Sorry you got upset" etc, completely dismissing his part in it. Needless to say I didn't go back to that RP. What a douche canoe that guy was.

      I'm sorry, I don't think that's character bleed though, I think that was triggering.
      Watching media and even reading stuff can cause problems.
      So, I don't think that's your fault, and the way the dm handled that was awful.

    Safety is super-important, especially if your character relation is very emotional or likely to make your fellow player uncomfortable (romantic relation, bullying, etc.). I make it a habit to take the talk with my fellow players a little while before it is necessary to know where their boundaries are, and encourage them to say so if they get uncomfortable.
    Me and a friend play two young elves, who are madly in love, and I routinely ask him if he's OK with what we're doing. Because LARP is supposed to be fun, and if you don't trust that your fellow player says "no" if he has a problem, it's hard to just go with the flow and enjoy the game. Just like with BDSM.

  • @fymblebymble
    @fymblebymble Před 5 lety +4

    I've commented on here before but oh my God. My first event was the first event for this system and the faction I was a part of was basically the evil space soldiers, so we had parades and people got barked at and it was very much that sort of disciplined atmosphere. As someone who has built up a thick skin and has dealt with these kinds of situations before OOC, I found it really immersive. My friend, however, did not appreciate it and it really affected her emotionally. During the game, she later told me she was worried about staying in the same faction as she did not want to be put in that situation again.
    HOWEVER. The NPCs and relevant PCs who had been involved in that situation had a discussion and made a kind of code. If you were 'signed off' for parades (no other explanation needed), you could simply not take part in these situations, and you would not be shouted at. Now if you tell them beforehand and they would have yelled at you in character, these NPCs and PCs will just take your character to the side for a moment, have a normal chat, and then come back.
    WHAT I LOVE ABOUT GOOD ORGANISERS AND PLAYERS. Accommodation is *so* key in making sure everyone enjoys the experience in whatever way they prefer and, simply due to their sensitivity and care towards my friend after the fact, she happily remains in the faction and she is deep in dem plotz. So happy.

    I love this video, thank you so much. I have a bunch of mental health issues and after going to my first larp last year and not really having as good of a time as I thought I would, I was worrying that larp wasn't for me. But after talking to some of the amazing people in the community and being supported by people at my larp, and coming accross videos like this, I've realised that larp is a set of skills that I haven't developed yet, and that it's ok for me to need to take a step back and to ease myself in more slowly. Baby steps!!!

    The whole video resonates with me but I am predominantly commenting with one specific line in mind... "Emotional safety is just safety." This is a splendid video. I love that you mentioned that sometimes you don't mind surprises with certain characters and games and not others, because people don't have to be the same at all times and in all places.

    I love that you mention having a mental health savvy person at game. The guild I play at has a very pivotal PC, who is referred to an Uncle. He doesn't enjoy combat and stays mainly around the tavern, he isnt a professional but he is extremely observant and will always swoop in when he sees someone in distress and bring them over to his table in the tavern for tea (that's his thing). He is very good at drawing out problems with other PCs and helping them resolve them. Its amazing to have someone at game like this.

    My favorite part: Hail Hydrate! True story-I just recently got dehydrated... in winter. I didn’t realize that I wasn’t drinking enough water! But the headache that came with the not enough water intake should have been a clue. So if there’s a headache, I would also recommend to drink water!
    The brain doesn’t know that fictional situational stress is not real life danger. (You’re not being chased by a lion, but your brain sure thinks you are.) This is one of the reasons why aftercare is needed.
    Thank you so much for this video! As a writer (who lives in my fantasy worlds), I definitely get attached to my characters and their cultures and everything.

    I absolutely adore you Cheyenne, you always just call it like it is and it is so helpful. I am going to my first Nordic style LARP in January, you may have heard of it? Armistice Arcane AKA @TeaofTitalns ? I have not really had a chance to play at many LARP events (three so far but only the viewers on my channel are counting). With this entirely new, full immersion style of event is coming up and I am faced with playing my first player character, I have been trying to build character relationship. It has been so wonderful building character histories, and trying to get into my character's head space. The friendships I am building with the players is so wonderful and I find my self looking to connect with this world more and more each day.
    I just found out that the person my character feels is her closest friend, their character dosn't feel the same. I was shocked to find that *I me, Angel, was hurt by this! How crazy is that?!? I had invested real time thinking about how these two would have interacted and histories they shared, and at our faction meet and great call last night this was dropped on me and I was actually sad for a few moments. I messaged the player after and told her of my surprise and was so pleased that she cared enough to talk with me, the way we had been as people talking about the LARP and characters, and reassure me that the friendship that she and I were building in real life was real, it was just her character who is a bit self absorbed w viewed my character who is a little naive, as, well naive...lol
    So thank you for this video, and all the wonderful information you share in this channel. You brought me into LARP, settled me into a great game with amazing people, and now you are continuing to educate me game life and help me on this exciting journey into the unknown. You make this world more approachable and less scary and I thank you so much for all you have given to my life personally and to the community at large. Love your guts...and your heart.

    So much bleed! I recognize most of these, like the time that I had to retire a character because her depression was making me depressed, or the time playing a multi-gendered multi-sexual shapeshifter gave me a whole new perspective on the fluidity of gender or the time I decided to internalize the blunt mannerisms of one of my characters and changed the way I was communicating with people. I really enjoyed your video!

  • @TheYellowGoggles
    @TheYellowGoggles Před 6 lety +18

    This really got me. I've got a lot to say but I'll try and condense as much as possible. My home game just ended in October and the character I played there (his name is Todd) has helped me more than any other I've played so far across larp, tabletop, etc, so much so that I've started the beginnings of a comic just so he can be in it. He was firey, emotional and self-destructive- all things I have bottled up in me at any given time and have for a very long time. I watched him change from a coward with nothing to his name in the beginning to the immortal owner of an orphanage by the end, each of his flaws having been systematically challenged on purpose or by accident along the way. For a while, it gave me hope that I could do the same, and in some small way it still does, but to have to leave a part of yourself where the credits roll and the epilogue ends to walk your own far more complicated road of uncertainties is one of the scariest things of all. Now that I've seen that it IS possible for someone so similar to myself get that happy ending, I'm terrified I never will/don't deserve it even if I could. It feels really silly but that's kind of where I am right now. As always, this video was the bomb and so are you. I'm teaching everyone I know that hand signal from now on.

      @Azrai  Před 6 lety +3

      Just remember, bleed is very normal and somewhat undramatic. I usually say that it's like watching a good movie that moves you emotionally (to cry, cheer, laugh, be angry, etc.), only the experience is more intense, because you're really there. But that's just because people tend to treat bleed like some weird, borderline schizofrenic condition, when it's really much simpler.

    • @thomasjoychild4962
      @thomasjoychild4962 Před 6 lety +4

      Very much this. I find another good comparison is the feeling, after finishing a book series you've really loved, of "Whoa... what am I even going to do with myself/my life now?". The people and events are made up, but the feelings and thoughts are very much real. :D

      @@emilyredbird7497 I see it as when an actor is acting and he's playing a character and here comes this emotional scene, to make it more realistic, he thinks of emotional stuff that makes his acting more realistic, people who larp are obviously playing characters, they're acting, they're roleplaying, and sometimes certain scenes that come into the game came have your adrenaline pumping or you can have an emotional reaction that may be a bit more real, I've never larped in my life but I personally can't see why people view it so differently when you have those types of moments in larp but not in movies or whatever, or maybe it's just me

    Absolutely fantastic video on a really intriguing part of the LARP process. I am a person involved in the Fetish Community, and while I won't at all bring in the dirty details, the process of avoiding emotional distress in fetish/kink is very similar to the process you have described here. Its all about pre-negotiation, continued communication and checking in during the "scene", immediate aftercare, debriefing, and the process of transition back into reality. I feel like this basic formula is so applicable to many potentially emotionally harmful situations, and could be applied in many professions and scenarios to improve outcomes.

    I’ve had this, but in dnd. Used to be very quiet about my concerns. Mostly when people were doing stuff wrong. I didn’t want to make them feel bad or stupid even if they were acting like an idiot. Then, my first Dnd character was an edgy, blunt thief that did whatever the heck she wanted. And when her party members screwed up, she was very verbal about it. And called them out on their idiotic behaviors.
    Later on, in reality, after a while of playing her, I was doing a group project in school. My partners were idiots and barely focused on the task, screwed around, etc. and I... couldn’t handle it. In a situation I would just bottle my anger and stuff up, I verbally told them off and made them contribute.
    And now I love playing blunt characters that can’t tolerate stupid tomfoolery.

    I wasn't sure how character bleed would manifest for me or if it would at all but it did, straight after my first LARP I did ego bleed-out. I actually kept slipping back into the French accent of my character, found myself hyper focused and I took risks a lot easier (and not in the best way lol). Literally, I was driving back and on a couple of occasions my friend had to tell me I was speeding - which is something I barely, if ever, do, /especially/ with someone I care about in the car with me. I'm so glad I wasn't caught by law enforcement or any cameras but it was literally the bleed of my character - who would take those kinds of risks for efficiency's sake. It was so odd, and I'm glad my friend understood and managed to get me back down to Earth a bit more.
    The same with another character - same friend though. Our characters had a huge misunderstanding about trust in game and it lead me to actually bring up real feelings I had had towards my friend and I felt that my friend didn't care. Of course, this wasn't true but there were tears and we spoke it out and it was all okay again, so that emotional release and interpersonal bleed meant we were more honest about our situation and walked away from that event even closer.
    Look after yourselves, fellas! Character bleed has done great things for my confidence and social abilities but it has also affected my ability to function, and it is important to step back in those moments and reflect and recover.

I just finished a DBT IOC program and hearing from you and a MH professional how LARP can act as a form of DBT makes me feel so much more comfortable as a person and potential LARPer. I hope things are going well for you!

    I think it is a LOT about checking which larps have what vision. There are a couple of larps I would never go to. Like some vampire larps are quite touchy, I just generally hate fighting so I only go to larps where I know that I won't have to be involved in that.
    As an npc or organizer, you can't check if everyone is ok with some emotional situations when the larp is just made to be very intense. But normally it is made very clear from the beginning that it is.
    In pretty serious war larps, there are always some clearly very ironic and lighthearted characters that just seemingly haven't read the first few lines of the decription. Going to a larp because it just so happened to be closeby is not always a good reason.
    There are so many nice and chill larps and it is the atendees task to look for the right larp for them.
    I think there are some safeties that organizers have to consider, but asking everyone if they are ok or giving warnings before emotional moments is just going to far for most larps. If someone wants to make that a larp, that is fine, but you can't require it of all larps.
    In my main Larp for example we have Stoooop (shouting stoooooop) and Ghost (shouting Ghost, then making the Ghost Symbol as long as you want to be ignored), for when you either want to stop everyone (mostly for medical emergencies) or be treated as a ghost to retreat (for mostly emotional reasons/ ebing overwhelmed/ anxiety). And I honestly think that this is exactly enough. I also purposefully got a larp where my character could not be killed without my agrement, because I know I could not handle that lol.

    I was a confident and kinda crazy and full of energy! Then I moved schools for my senior year and thought "hey. I'm an actor. How about I play a totally different character for fun. (DUMB IDEA) I pretendedto be a shy, sheltered girl who was scared of everything. It was fun at first. I hated my new school so I didn't care what people thought of me. But I played that character for roughly a year and it messed me up. I got some social anxiety now and my ptsd (that I already had) worsened. I have stage fright and I used to LOVE being on stage and speaking infront of people.

    Regarding character bleed - this does not only apply to LARP but to acting and tabletop RPGs. Some of it doesn't sound like a bad thing - learning to understand another perspective or genuinely feeling emotions you are pretending to feel is inevitable in my opinion. I have had experience both with acting and with tabletop RPGs, and I've had this to an extent with both, but it was always very easy to separate my character's feelings from my own, or to acknowledge when I was feeling the same thing or something very close to what my character was feeling (that's not necessarily a bad thing - if you're in a good mood and your character is in a good mood in the moment, there's nothing wrong with channeling that feeling to make your performance better in my opinion). This sounds a bit like the Stanislavski (I might be spelling that wrong) method of acting TBH.
    On the other hand, I do think it could be very unhealthy if it got extreme and was hurting someone (ex. your make friends with a toxic person who plays an amazing character and end up inviting them into your life because of your in-game relationship - thank goodness this has never happened to me or anyone I know before), so I do think its something very important to be mindful of, though not necessarily something to fear or avoid.

    I didn't really know that Bleed was a thing until recently, and I now realise that I had some serious character bleed from my first ever DnD campaign.
    I won't go into detail but some real horrible stuff happened to my PC, stuff that really shouldn't happen in a DnD game under any circumstance. The bleed happened because the DM made no distinction between the players and the characters, in his mind my PC was me (which he wasn't). So when the stuff happened to my character, it felt like it was what the DM wanted to do me.
    It really took a tole on me, and I've only very recently gotten back into DnD, hopefully with better people from now on.

    I feel like this video touches some brilliant points and addresses a lot of issues, i have an issue with one minute point however , it was what you said about surprises, the DM is as much a part of the story and twists surprises and revelations the party or character find within reason is absolutely to be expected after all its a story , and a completely linear story with no surprises or mystery is almost certain to be rather dull , that is however just how i run my games and everyone is entitled to play/run their games how their group sees fit.
    Edit: i dont mean major character altering/ending surprises but i mean story beats or things like that are expected in a story

    Any suggestions for someone who's done LARP once this year, and has been scared all to hell to go back, because it seems to be very combat heavy and I'm afraid to hit anyone with a boffer? I love the RP and social concepts/aspects of LARP, (Its why I play D&D) but the last time I got a boffer in my hand outside of LARP a friends and I were just fooling around I hurt someone - not seriously but they still got pretty mad at me for it. I've done searching and all the LARPs in Ontario Canada seems to be very combat heavy and the more Social Type LARPs (Like Vampire the Mascaraed, seriously there's a Chapter in Toronto) are very focused in and around Toronto, and that's a bit far... even the one i went to this past year was a bit far, but I went anyway. What do I do?

    But isn't everyone playing themselves at the end of the day?
    I find something about the idea of pretending to not be me fundamentally unsettling. I have not yet worked out why that is. Maybe it has to do with the fact that my original personality is filled to the brim with contradictive qualities that make me feel like I am already a multitude? I don't know. Or maybe it's because I have cultivated the strong instinct to avoid anything that seems to be going into even remote directions of delusion. I do think that I 'roleplay' in my life, but I'm always playing versions of myself. And I have friends that do larp. And even though I do performance art and visual art and live in subcultures and whathaveyou, larp is the one approach that terrifies me in a way I can't understand.

    okay but
    playing (hehe) devils advocate why is there a difference between for example music festivals a fun group activity involving intoxication and a larp a fun group activity involving acting in the sense that why are you pressing for professional emotional support for participants in one as if the other dont have vulnurable participants. its just called a medical tent and events outside cities have them. there, done.
    i mean secret gang signs for checkup during game yeah thats just common sense
    i so dont get how you can live life and experience all kinds of shit no one plans and then come to a game - where you sometimes even hope for shit to go down - and you expect warnings? i dont understand the check it before you wreck it like do you just wake up and go to the organisers to check at what point of the game a spaceship will fall into the main square so you dont get startled? or during a scene you ask the empty forest if there is an ambush coming because if so youre out?

    • @Azrai
      @Azrai  Před 6 lety +2

      Warnings are not about wanting to avoid being startled. "They ask for them because they are trying to manage themselves responsibly and still participate in the game." "For certain content." Meaning that many people who need warnings due to trauma etc with certain content can still participate in the game if they have a little time to prepare mentally. Some may need to excuse themselves, but often it's just about managing the situation with some preparation. I do not appreciate your trivializing what people with mental illness go through by reducing it to being "startled." If you have any honest questions that aren't already answered in the video, feel free to ask. Otherwise, "devil's advocates" are just devils, and will not be further engaged here.

      what i want to know is how do these warnings actually happen you know what i mean

    • @Azrai
      @Azrai  Před 6 lety +3

      In that case, it varies individually. Some players may need to know ahead of time if an encounter is dealing with assault (sexual violence), or if there are pyrotechnic effects that make loud (gunshot) noises, or if there are many death expected etc... you warn them beforehand of these things. Just a quick off-game aside, saying that this encounter will deal with these themes. And yes, it can get slightly spoiler-y- but it's far better to have an element of the story "spoiled" for a few players than it is to have PTSD flashbacks and the like on your hands. I've also seen organizers put a warning on entire FB event pages, saying 'this game will deal heavily with themes of x, y and z' and then restating it whenever possible. In some games, you coordinate with an NPC before they come to play their part in your story (Dziobak Studios does things this way) and you brief them on what they're supposed to do, that is also a good time to work out what themes are and aren't okay.
