Brother killed that lick and then says to himself, "Whoo!", LMAO! Great video man, sounds beautiful!
Wow! Outstanding!! I could no more do what Charlie Porter does than fly. But Charlie's method of teaching really is good. I'm almost 90 so I can only play like Charlie in my dreams.
Blue Mitchell quotes this lick on the Spinning Wheel solo on the Jimmy McGriff Electric Funk record.
Fantastic video. Really found this fascinating, even though I'm not a trumpet player. Thank you for helping us to understand and appreciate your craft. Those who are good at their game are generous with their knowledge.
I've ALWAYS wanted to learn this lick. Thanks so much. I didn't realize there was so much repeated of the same note like in the first part of the bar. Dizzy really truly is a hero of mine.
My god and I thought I had heard every type of lick out there, I've never heard anything like this! This is awesome!!
Thanks! Its a Los Angeles Olds Ambassador from the 50's or earlier. Great horns.
Love it, thanks man!
Good Stuff! Thanks for this and the other posts you've done. (Also really like your CD!) Next time I"m in NY I'll try to catch you live.
Charlie -- OUTTA SIGHT, man....Keep it comin'!! You're biggest fan, Brad.
I normally don't rely on pre programmed licks per say in my jazz playing, but something like this I'd love to add.
Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you for breaking these licks down for us, my arsonal of licks and moteefs is much wider and more interesting because of you!
Thank YOU man. Awesome. You make it so simple. Then there's the Clark Terry lick on Perdido on Ellington's Uptown albun.I'm glad I found out about you.
Smokin! This lick was shown to me at Berklee in '88 by George Zonce. I wrote it down,
but lost it. I've tried to figure it out, but couldn't. Thank You for sharing Charlie! I also want to thank you for all of your videos, and for turning me on to Willie(Jazz Everyone).
Fantastic! I greatly appreciate everything! :)
Yeah, that's pretty damned cool! THANKS! I'm giving this a try!
Its a Monette Prana, B2S3 with a 17 throat.
I spent years try to figure that one out!!
Thanks Charlie!!
What threw me off was the alternate fingering and the fact the the E with first and second value don't sound the same. I knew there was a false fingering in it but couldnt pick whether it was the D with 1 and 3 or the E.
Then tried it with an Eb before the E to make the rhythm/ note count right with.
It's the weird slight pitch difference of the E open and E 1 and 2 and the triplet count that does it!
Thanks SO MUCH!!
Great tone, Cat.
YOU ARE AWESOME
awesome! ou yeah, thanks for show!
This is GRRRREAT!!!!
I probably listened to this break before you were born, Charlie, and now you show me how he did it!!
I am impressed!
I actually think he stole it from Roy Eldridge - whom he used to copy. Listening to the old records it could be hard to tell who was who... Roy often used a cup and Diz the harmon.
Thank you very much for this, young man!
Best wishes from Petter, oldie from Norway
Great!
Awesome! I always knew it was an alternate fingering thing. Thanks for showing us how! I've caught Oscar Peterson playing this too. I wonder who came up with it first.
The Lewis Armstrong pics in the background tho
Nice Charlie
Very nice indeed. I think you forgot to put a natural on the second D in the last line.
Very nice Charlie!!!!!
What trumpet did you use in this video? Is a "Olds Opera Symphonic Trumpet"?
Yes!!!
Super 🎺🎵🎹🎼
Hi Charlie,
Is that Dizzy lick available for pdf download anywhere?
Thanks,
Chuck
Hey Charlie- what about Diz’s lick in eternal triangle at 13:08....??

what size mouthpiece do you use?
255bpm
What tempo is the original at??
what mouth piece do you use what the size
What’s this called
When Dizzy plays it in the recording at the beginning it sounds like he articulates each note.
You must learn portuguese and come in Lisbon ;)
Thanks man.
Wow I feel so insecure about my trumpet playing abilities:)
