  • Hello friends! In today's video, I wanted to show you how I do horsehair hems on different types of dresses. I use these on wedding gowns, prom dresses, and cocktail dresses. The horsehair adds so much structure, flare, and elegance to these garments. If you find this video useful, please don't forget to give it a like, comment, and share. Also please don't forget to subscribe, we're so close to 100k subscribers, all thanks to you! So grateful!

    Peggy is right on, you are an incredibly talented seamstress and we appreciate you r sharing so much. I recently was asked to shorten my granddaughters junior prom dress, floor length. I couldn’t have done it without your wedding dress video. I used your teaching to keep the train… that we didn’t even know was there. I even added a wrist ribbon so she could dance and not be stepped on. You make us look good. Thank you for all you do.

  • @ruthcline5465
    @ruthcline5465 Před rokem +2

    I’m an experienced seamster and I love your videos!
    I’m interested to know how you manage a hem that has the horsehair “captured” between the lining and outer fabric. It’s a very beautiful finished seam.
    I have opened the side seams of the lining and pulled the skirt and lining inside out.
    Then carefully replace my finished hem pins to the inside move the horsehair up as needed then line everything up and sew the new seam, turn it right side out and top stitch the lining seams.
    It takes forever and I’m not happy with the finished length sometimes.
    It’s so easy to miss the perfect length by an 1/8” or so.
    How do you do it?

    • @DowntownTailoring
      @DowntownTailoring  Před rokem +2

      I know what you mean. It's so frustrating when it isn't exactly the length you were looking for, even when the customer loves it. I do it pretty much all the steps you do. I could add that I make sure as well to cut exactly the same amount of the lining I cut at the top. But I wanted to point out as well that for sure there's a 1/16" you loose with the folding that you need to account when you measure. With thicker materials this is even more. And then, there's another 1/6" that might be lost just by sewing and moving the seam allowance (we aren't perfect). This is where you 1/8" might be. I don't know if you noticed but I left 3/8" with the white skirt even though I was going to sew at 1/8" and fold 1/8". And still my finished hem was exactly on the control mark I did. The first one, same. I left 5/8" (I even rectified as I said it wrong), sew it at 1/4" and folded 1/4". Sorry for my long response. I hope this helps. Cheers 🙂

It will have a gap at the front and satin fabric curved away jn as full a skirt as i can make. My question is would you cut the horsehair to graduate it in or should i gather it in usjng a long stitch ?

    • @DowntownTailoring
      @DowntownTailoring  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi! Thanks. If the curve isn’t too deep, you might be able to make it in one piece by gathering the opposite side a little. But if you can’t, instead of cutting by pieces, try to make a few darts instead of cutting pieces.
      The horsehair gets too spiky when you cut it.
      Good luck with your project. Let me know how it goes ☺️

    If you are seperating the torso from the skirt, why not just shorten the skirt from the top? So much easier to shorten from the top, take in the side and put zipper since the torso is already taken off.

    • @DowntownTailoring
      @DowntownTailoring  Před rokem

      This is an excellent question, and this is what I'd do every time I can. I wish CZcams would allow me to make a short with the answers. That way, I could be more graphic.
      Anyway, in this particular case, two inconveniences presented themselves for shortening from the waist. The first one, which is a reason by itself, is that my customer wanted to keep all the length at the back, so we were kind of transforming this dress, otherwise straight, in a a gown with train. If I cut it from the top, I'd be losing this opportunity.
      The other reason is that this skirt is form fitted, and it fits perfectly around my customer's hips and thighs. Cutting it from the top would have required to copy the same shape a few inches lower. This results in working probably on 6 seams. Although this isn't an impossible task, sometimes it isn't simpler, neither more accurate than just shortening from the bottom as this is a relatively simple hem. Nevertheless, this isn't impossible, and I could be inclined in making so if we didn't need to keep the train, as I mentioned earlier.
      I wanted to clarify that very often, I choose to shorten a dress from the waist.
      Thanks for your comment.
      Cheers 😊
