- This is a quick sewing tutorial on how to easily make a narrow hem on lightweight fabric with a ban roll.
If you do not quite understand how I speak (sorry about that) check out my written tutorial on my blog, here is the link www.ageberry.com/narrow-hem-t...
I write better then I speak so I guess it's better for you to READ then to listen.
This is one of the really awesome sewing tricks - learn how to sew a narrow hem (easy even on chiffon) using a ban roll tape, how to sew a rolled hem on chiffon without a special rolled hem foot.
What exactly is this Ban Roll?
It is a kind of waistband interfacing tape which is very stiff (looks like highly starched) that won’t curl or roll and is crush-proof. They say that it’s made of 58% nylon/ 17% rayon/ 15% polyester/ 10% thermoplastic resin but it’s woven quite loosely. It’s mostly used in sewing waistbands to make them rigid and keep their shape. The width of the tape can vary. You can see very clearly threads that form the tape interlacing to one another at right angles. The threads can be easily peeled away to make a frayed edge that will be pulled out after stitching.
Where to buy the Ban Roll tape?
I never saw it in small local sewing shops, I bought mine in a Canadian store - Fabricland - but after that I found it on Amazon. I am pretty sure you will need it if you sew garments from silk. It will revolutionize your sewing skills. - Jak na to + styl
This is one of the cleverest tips I've seen in a long time, and I've been sewing for 60 years! Thank you so much. And don't worry about your English - it's VERY easy to understand you and your instructions are very clear.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I am really happy to hear this!
Totally agree, I've been sewing for years also and never seen this fantastic tip before! I'm now a new sub!!
I could watch and listen to this lady all day! ♥️
tHAT IS REALLY NICE. BUT IN A WIDE SKIRST THAT WILL TAKE A WHILE bUT ALOT BETTER. tHANK YOU MCH
@@m.castrellonhernandez8523b
I was unsure where you were going at first and then at the end, it made perfect sense. I will try this, thank you.
Thank you for your feedback!
I bought some ban roll, for trouser waistbands and I am amased at how quickly I learnt to make tiny hems. I gave home made handkerchieves to friends and they were surprised and wondered how the hem could be so small. Thank you.
I too have been sewing many years and as a professional I still learn from others. This technique is definitely one I will use!
🥰
Glad it helps. I don't use this very often (how many times do you hem chiffon, unless you are a professional) but it is indeed effective and fast.
You saved my life! This hack is genius and you should get an award! I needed to hem a dress in a hurry and couldn’t find Ban-rol interfacing in my area and ordering it online wouldn’t arrive in time so I went to JoAnn’s and found the next best thing. Dritz iron on mending tape has the stiffness needed and can fray like the Ban-rol interfacing. I gave it a try and it worked like a charm. Thank you for posting this video. Best tutorial out there for rolled hems! I won’t do it any other way now. Bless you, sweet woman, bless you!
Thank you! I did not know that the Dritz tape can be used instead, excellent addition!
Please enlighten me, i am new in sewing.... why do you need tapes on hemming? You cannot sew it without tape?
Tape for a rolled hem makes your life a billion times easier. It’s not needed for a basic hem.
And today, YOU are the lifesaver! At Joann's and they do not have ban-roll. They did not have the dritz you used, either, but based on your experience, I was able to choose something else to try.
@@han-guksarangvlogs4483 - Tiny rolled hems on thin fabrics, when done on a machine, can be tricky and when done by hand, can be tedious. This method appears to be a real game-changer.
OMG! I've been sewing for 50 years. Never knew this. Thanks
Happy to help!
My dear, you have just saved me from the huge stress of having to shorten a “mother of the bride” dress. I can’t thank you enough!
Hi, could you recommend a brand of roll ban and width? Thanks
@@lupebutterfly9161 I don’t know where you are but I got a roll from the internet that is 1” wide. I believe the width matters bc I’m old and it’s easier to hold onto. Also I applied it in a succession of 12-15 inch strips (the hem was easily 70 inches around). I think I got mine from Amazon before I realized you can buy 5’ strips from Etsy. Please try it on a similar fabric before you commit to the target item; just get an eighth of a yard of something close. I wish you the best of luck. It worked great for me. ☺️
This is a BRILLIANT tip for sewing fine hems!! Thank you SOOO VERRRY much for sharing this tip!! I truly LOVE it!!
I'm no professional but this is a wonderful technique. I just paid way too much money for a sloppy hem, that I know I could have done better even with my little home sewing machine if I had just trusted myself. I will be redoing this hem on my own now with this new technique. Thank You!
Don't worry about not being a professional - what matters is the care and effort you put into your work. I'm confident that with this new technique, you'll achieve a hem that you're proud of. Best of luck with the redo, and you're very welcome! Thank you for giving it a try and for your kind words.
Amazing! I've owned a roll of Ban Roll over 20 years and never used it! Now I will! And for just this purpose, to sew narrow hems! 😊
Have fun! I also had the tape for a long time and I used it for reinforcements only (not very often), until I found about this trick. It really works.
Please could you share the brand and width? Thanks
OMG! This is one of the coolest tricks I’ve seen! I was so impressed and excited after seeing this, that I had my husband watch the video, too.. he was equally impressed!
That hem is beautiful and perfect. Now I need the pattern make the owl pattern.Thats adorable. Thanks for the video.
Thank you very much! I can make a tutorial on how to sew the owl pincushion if you are interested. And also send me a message to this address olga@ageberry.com so I can send you the pattern by email because making a new tutorial will take some time.
If it's ok, I will send you an email for the pattern. I would love to make an owl too! Thank you!
You are right. It will revolutionalize my sewing. Thank you for making this video!
Easy, Time saving, and re-usable (Maybe 2-3times at least). Best of Best Hacks I've ever seen. Keep it up.
Thank you for your sweet note, Nithya!
Awesome!!! I have a polyester ruffled skirt that came unhemmed and now I know how to repair it. Thank you!!!
You've made my life easier!! Years of thank yous!
Wow. This is brilliant. I will definitely be using this tip from now on.
That’s so clever! I actually have some voile curtains I need to hem. Was going to just stitch the top so it’s much easier & keep neat hem at bottom, but now I’m tempted to try this! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful result and you explain things do clearly. I must try this, thank you.
That's amazing!! Thanks for sharing this technique!
Wow ! Thank you for the video , i have learned how to hem on light fabric.
Thank you so much Olga, I am amazed at your genius. This is so clever. Your perfect narrow hem is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much!
That was really a simple hem stitching. Very easy. Thanks for sharing
That is GENIUS! 😍 I love love LOVE your pincushion. I have a little hedgehog. Be blessed!
Genius tip! Thank you!
I started sewing in the late 60's. We had a basic sewing machine, chalk, ruler and straight pins. That's about it. We made amazing clothes we thought lol. When the Pfaff 1222e came out with a built in walking foot in the 70's we thought we had it all. Us 3 girls plus mom fought over sewing machine time. Still sewing on same machine plus my Bernina 1230. Still making amazing clothes. You are never to old to learn new things.
Wow , that is a good trick, with thin fabrics.....love your idea. 🌹❤️🌹❤️
Thank you for the comment! It's not my own idea though. I learned it from my friend.
Wow!! This is great!! I just wish I had seen it a few years ago. Had a horrible time with a rolled hem. Genius!!
You are the smartest ever!! Thanks a million for your tutorial. See you soon.
You were very clear and concise and I understood you. Thank you for taking the time to show us this technique.
Thanks for watching!
So very clever! This video must have helped so many people. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your wonderful technique.
Thank you! But it's not my technique, I didn't discover it myself. I learned this technique a few years ago at the PatternReview conference. I was so impressed by it that I made this video as soon as I came from the conference ( I just started my channel then).
brilliant...love your technique, definitely will try this method...thankkkkssss
This is the best tip for us amateurs I have seen ever! Thanks a lot! I'll certainly try it!
Thank you; actually I find this method easier to use than the dedicated foot.
This worked so well!!! I used it with a light polyester lining for a circular dress hem, and it looks very professional. Next up it'll be used again for the satin and organza layers on the same dress. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for coming back to tell me how it went! If possible, send me images please, I would like to publish them on my blog if you don't mind. My email is olga@ageberry.com
So smart ! I can't wait to try this !
That WAS easy! Thank you so much for the tip.
I'm so glad you found it easy! You're very welcome - I'm happy to share tips that make sewing more enjoyable.
You are a very gifted teacher! Thank you!
Thank you for your sweet note, Marsha!
Just ordered some ban roll. I’m adding a slit in a chiffon dress and didn’t know how I was going to accomplish those tiny seams for my client. Thank you so much!
Wonderful! I hope it works well for you too.
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial!!!
Very good tutorial. Thank you!
Thanks again for sharing your wise knowledge. You are very kind, Olga.
My pleasure! And thank you for watching!
How clever! Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the tutorial video. I love your owl pincushion
Thank you, knowing that the video is helpful to others motivates me to make more !
this is a mission impossible & you've done it easy yet beautifully! THANK YOU.
Thank you. I also think this works better than the sewing machine foot which is quite difficult to use.
Your accent is adorable and your English is well enough to understand perfectly! Thank you for the video tutorial!
Thank you; I hope it is useful!
Another new fan here. I just watched your video on sewing a dart on sheer fabric with the bobbin thread only. I have been sewing 50 years and learned 2 new tricks in half an hour! In Afrikaans we have a saying, (well actually Dutch) Doe zo voort. My mum said it all the time. Now I am saying it to you. Do more, you are very good at it. My kind of videos, short, precise and to the point. no explaining why you could not make a video in a month because your dog/kid/husband poo'ed green (you get my drift).
Thank you very much for your feedback! I am happy to hear you liked my videos. I know what you mean about some CZcams videos being not on point. I try to make something different, maybe not always successful but I am getting some experience. That's why comments are very useful to me.
Wow! This is fantastic! I just discovered it! Thank you for the wonderful tip. By the way, I thought you did very well speaking English! :) You shouldn't apologize at all! Thank you again for the awesome tip. I will be using it!!! :)
Thank you for sharing your technique in sewing narrow hem.
Thank you! However it is not my technique, I learned it myself a number of years ago from a friend.
This is a life changing technique! And I'm not being hyperbolic! Thank you so much! And I understood your English just fine.
Thank you. I also found the technique very useful, especially for very narrow hems where I really don't like to use the foot.
This is genius! Everytime I've tried a rolled hem has been a disaster, so after the last one I swore off them forever, but this is making me think I'll have another go. Thank you very much!!
Thank you; let us know how it works out for you maybe?
Thank you very much, this hem is so beautiful, I'll try it next time when have to hem my grandkids' uniform pants.
Glad to help!
THANK YOU! this was insanely helpful.
Thats mind blowing .... stupendous trick .... love it and thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for your feedback!
Oh my god.. this is life changing! Thank you!! 😁
absolutely trying to use roll foot is getting me crazy this is my new metthod
Thank you for this wonderful video.
Wow! Excellent idea and very clearly explained! Thank you!
Thank you for watching, and glad it was helpful!
This is so clever, I have not seen this done before. Thanks for sharing and I will definitely try it.
Thanks for watching; I am always glad when my videos are useful.
Great video, thank you Ageberry. I found this tape (Banrol) in the UK at the English Couture Co. 85p per metre 25mm wide and £1.35 for 38mm. I'm ordering some today! Thanks again Ageberry!
Thank you! That's great you found the tape. I think the tape was more common in fabric stores 10 years ago and now it's kind of disappearing. Maybe people don't use it anymore that much.
Thanks so much for this, Ageberry. It's a fantastic process for a tricky problem.(I've been on PR since it started.)
Thank you for your comment! Oh, you are a long time member of PR, it's great. I am so sorry I missed so many years, I just started to be a member last year.
Genius! Thank you for sharing this i always struggling with this.
That's so perfect...Great trick.
Thank you!
Amazing tip! Thanks so much for sharing 😊
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Awesome technique!
Thank you! Definitely I must try it 🤍
Spent the whole afternoon frustrated trying to hem a chiffon scarf with no consistent result, changed needles, even borrowed a 3 mm hem presser foot with no luck.
You can do it! Let us know how it worked for you. I find this method easier than the rolled hem foot, especially for very narrow hems where the material gets out from the foot very easily.
You made this look like pure magic!!
Thank you; the results are indeed very nice.
It's a excellent tip for nice hem thank you somuch
Thank you!
Thank you so much!!! Wonderful video and a great lesson!
Thank you, Karen! I really appreciate your feedback.

Happy to help!
This is so helpful. Never would have considered this before!
Thank you; I have myself learned it and I think it is easier than using the foot for very narrow hems.

Thank you so much!! You saved my project!!
Glad I could help, and thanks for watching!
So very clever Amazing
Thank you!
That was an awesome tutorial
Thank you! I really appreciate your commenting!
Wow! That is a million times easier than using that darn narrow hem foot 🦶 ! Thanks !
It sure is! I also find the foot not very easy to use, it is a hassle to keep the fabric folded.
Final view looks great. I am still a little confused as to the ‘ ban roll’ & will watch again, & research. This looks promising as to be a revolution in my little sewing room.
Fantastic Thank You 🙏❤️
Wow this video is a blessing thank you so much!
Great tutorial, I usually make a rolled hem with my overlocker/serger now, but this is a great way to do it with a normal sewing machine
Thank you very much! I have a rolled hem foot for my regular sewing machine but I still need to learn to use different feet for my serger. I have 5 of them for years but never used them. Going to try now.
@@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry I just use the rolled hem on the serger, no need to change feet at all, it makes a very neat hem but it can stretch the fabric
@@erikacronje8985 Oh, I see what you mean. Of course, I have this option on my serger and I use it a lot for chiffon and even for lightweight knits. Just a different kind of rolled hem without turning it over twice.
Great job. I'm going to try it.
Thank you! I'm excited to hear you're going to give it a try. They say, practice makes perfect, so don't hesitate to experiment.
That is brilliant. Thank you👍🏻🙏🏻🇨🇦
SO CLEVER, THANKS!
Thank you!
