- In case anyone is confused why these matches were seen as controversial:
ChuDat vs Leffen - Shine 2017
ChuDat beat Leffen 3-2, however was forced to replay the set because Universal Controller Fix (20XX mod that fixes controller discrepancies, so that any controller is on par with a "good" controller) was disabled. Leffen ended up winning this time 3-2, which of course sparked controversy in the community, TOs faced backlash for not making sure UCF was enabled prior to the set. People were also mad that Leffen technically won 5-5 and was given 10 games to adapt. As if there wasn’t enough salt in the wound, UCF ended up not returning at Shine 2018 since it was a Nintendo sponsored event.
GENESIS - Pink Shinobi vs RockCrock
This match is cited as the reason Kongo Jungle 64 is banned from tournaments. Peach and Jigglypuff were found to be very powerful on the stage due to the layout allowing easy circle camping, and this match is a key example of that, as Ganondorf could do very little to contest it.
GENESIS 4 - Komorikiri vs CaptainZack
The set they played was confirmed to be on 0.9x knockback the whole time. Originally, they were going to replay the entire set on 1.0x knockback, however ended up replaying only the last game due to time constraints because this would have meant Dabuz and ZeRo (the previous set) should have to be replayed as well since it was also on 0.9x. Similarly to the Shine 2017 set, people were angry at the TOs for not checking the settings beforehand. To this day, we do not know how the knockback was changed to 0.9x or who changed it.
Tacna 2014 - Superboomfan vs Gerson
This match is a prime example of why Hyrule Castle is no longer a legal stage and why 8 min timer is now the standard for Smash 64 tournaments (not a feature in the actual game, has to be modded in). It is thought that Boom's play was a method to demonstrate the flaws of Hyrule Castle to the Peruvian community.
EGLX 2018 - Plup vs Hungrybox
The event was ending so doors were being opened, but Melee grand finals still needed to happen. Because it was the middle of Winter in Toronto, this made it so the venue was very cold which greatly affected the players. This set displays why warm venues are crucial for players, and many viewers felt that it also gave an unfair advantage to Hungrybox since Plup was playing Fox who requires more tech skill than Jigglypuff. EVO 2018 - CaptainZack vs Lima
Before the set started, much of the audience left not wanting to view the grand finals. This set was very controversial, especially seen by how many dislikes the video has on CZcams (5,232 dislikes vs 1,568 likes as of right now). The reason for this is because it was Smash 4's last year at EVO, but viewers felt Lima and Zack treated it like a joke, and felt that the FGC would view Smash 4 as a joke. The homie stock, stalling for 2 minutes, laughing throughout the set greatly contrasts with the previous EVO grand finals where the players took it much more seriously. Japanese players in particular reportedly viewed it as very disrespectful / 1025980712984301569
On the other hand, people said that because of the harshness of the community and the way it treats Zack and Lima, it was completely deserved.
Winterfest - Mew2King vs Gnes
This match played a big role in the banning of scrooging (stalling under the stage with MK's glide) as there is very little that can be done to challenge it and Meta Knight can time out easily this way.

Crazy thing is, it was by the top 2 players in the world at that time. Boom really despised hyrule as a stage and has led the efforts to have it removed as a legal stage. Boom has no problem stalling for nearly an hour in 1 game

@@LemonT71 It happened at this years evo, those 2 were getting boo'd by everyone cause they main Bayo so when they got to grand finals together as good friends they thought it would be funny to stall the match and the TO Bear had to come up and tell them to play. The 1st clip was Lima giving zack a homie stock because he SD'd which would be fine in normal circumstances but with all the other stuff it was frowned upon because it was Evo Grand finals.

Apparently one of the Exhibitors forced the doors open and was yelling at venue staff who were trying to get them closed again. This is what I heard on twitter anyway; she wasn’t even packing up her exhibit. Just keeping the doors open for no reason.

What he was doing the first couple of minutes could count as stalling. I’d wager if a TO came by and saw it, he could’ve been disqualified from the competition if the time limit on stalling was reached.

@@shiinozaki Sonic has two possible kill throws iirc, both of which were used in the last game they played in 0.9 launch rate. Most top players have charts and memorize kill percentages of their throws. (At least for meta relevant characters like Bayo.) Factoring in rage, staling, and different blastzones. It's easy to see him pummeling to the exact percentage where his throw can win him the game, only to have it not kill at all, twice.

Nyax Ellemonte No, that’s reasonable. The way he acted after losing EVEN AFTER replaying the set makes me think that he knew the entire time and used it as a failsafe. If he really did expect something wrong, he would ask to stop the match. He obviously knew and was upset that it didn’t work in the end.

I would be inclined to agree with you if Komo pulled something like this more than once though. Maybe this is just me being naive, but from what I've seen of Komo he seems to be an honorable player. (Apart from playing Sonic. Lol) Just giving him benefit of the doubt.

FuazzyMoto many techniques in melee require precise inputs to execute, however, some controllers are better than others for certain techniques due to small defects or wear. UCF stands for universal controller fix and makes all controllers function the same. UCF wasnt on during the set for whatever reason, which was especially detrimental to leffen, because fox requires far more precise inputs than icies, which was why the set was replayed.

I did read the description, and it's still ridiculous. They could easily have just not allowed the 1% of controllers that are better than the rest, or just unbanned controller modding so anyone could have one. Hacking the game to fix it was the worst possible choice, because now the game's integrity is in the garbage (where it belongs). Plus, Melee idiots went around spreading bullshit about Brawl needing hacks to be competitive, which was completely false (no major Brawl tournament ran non-cosmetic hacks), but still hurt the game's image. And now, after years of giving Brawl players shit for something they didn't even do, Melee players are actually using gameplay hacks? They deserved to be mocked for that.

If that's true, then that means any controller mod that isn't externally visible would fly under the radar, in which case they should just make it legal (like every single other fighting game) so anyone can have a "good" controller.
And I'm not talking about PM, everyone knew those were separate games. Even before PM, Melee players were insisting that Brawl tournaments were using gameplay hacks. They were never specific about what hacks Brawl players were supposedly using (because that would require basic knowledge of the thing they spent their entire lives deriding), though they were probably referring to anti-tripping hacks. Tripping was the dumbest thing, but it was almost never consequential. There's almost no combos in Brawl, you're invulnerable while tripping and while recovering from a trip, and you recover from it pretty quickly, so you couldn't really get any significant damage or land a KO just from a trip. Because of that, we just dealt with it, but Melee players still insisted that it was literally impossible to play without the hacks.

Can someone explain to me why playing with .9 knockback and not 1 is a massive deal? I'm not saying it isn't, but to me it seems relatively minor, and it impacted both players.
Is it because it would change kill percents and mess up some combos because of spacing? Is the .9 major enough to impact that?
I'm not trying to start shit, I'm genuinely curious.
It changes kills to be 10% later. It was shown that there were times in the Komo vs CaptZack set and the ZeRo vs Dabuz set where moves didn't kill when they should have with 1.0x knockback.
Also, some combos are far easier to execute and follow up on since the opponent is always 10% closer to you.

I think that if you stall for more than 3 minutes, with no damage taken on either side while the opponent pursues you you should be DQ'd.
For the Kongo jungle damage was taken but the guy did stall, for the Hyrule Castle one it was a long time ago so ruleset weren’t really good back then
If that happens, the player shouldn't be dqed the stage should just be possibly banned after some discussion in the community. Saying you should be dqed for stalling if your opponent isn't stalling too is a really shitty mindset

I like smash 4, but those evo grand finals were pathetic. Melee was much more interesting to see, and I’m glad Leffen won. Hopefully Ultimate fixes some issues that smash 4 had

To be honest, Bayo ruined Smash 4. I lost all interest in watching it as a viewer when she became so prevalent. Salem using Bayo was the last time I watched and that is only because Salem is such a respectful dude. But man, she's such a grossly overpowered character it is not even funny. I don't understand why the devs had such a hard on for her to not rebalance her properly :|
What I don't understand even more is all the people defending her as just being a good character. Bayo is not just a good character, she is just a few steps below being Brawl Meta Knight tier. More and more of Smash 4 became "how well can you do against Bayo", which is pretty much what happened to Brawl with Meta Knight and why many tournies opted to ban him. It is perfectly understandable for people to boo players that use a character that a large majority of the community wanted to see rebalanced or outright banned.

Agreed. Bayo was the beginning of the end for Smash 4. Bayo literally was the definition of Pay to Win. Let's hope Nintendo learns from that and doesn't add another God tier in the DLC for Ultimate. Make them good, make them be able to compete and hold their own, heck make them top tier...but please don't make them unarguably better than every other character by a LONG SHOT.
Also I'm glad Salem gave up on Bayo and is maining Link now. That alone is respectable.

Because the knockback was set to 0.9 instead of 1.0, they had to replay the set. Those throws that Sonic was dealing should’ve killed Bayonetta if the setting weren’t messed with. Which is why it’s so contentious.
