Atlus/ Sega is on fire this year getting around to like a dragon infinite wealth exploring Hawaii and just having ichiban and the gang back is really fun .
I can't wait to review it!
I love the game been thinking about 100 percent it.
Unicorn Overlord is my GOTY so far. Vinallaware games are automatic preorders for me. Can’t wait for their next release.
I do wonder what they've got cooking next!
💯
Incredible studio.
Fantastic and Fun list! Just beat FF7:Rebirth yesterday. What a Masterpiece, once-in-a-lifetime type of experience. Everything about it was so perfect and beautiful. What a wonderful combat system, story, and emotional thrill ride!
The memories of that game are definitely still with me, months after I've beaten it
This year is great! Rebirth, Granblue, Infinite Wealth...and more! Just loving every minute!
With a family now so I don’t have a lot of time for gaming but I am now 60 hours in Unicorn Overlord and enjoying every minute of it. Can’t wait to see what Vanillaware comes up with next!
Have you played the games in their back catalog? They're great too!
So many amazing JRPGs, and yes, Paper Mario TTYD is a must play! Great video, Alex!
I'm midway through Persona 3 Reload and 30 hours in, it's been incredible so far! ^_^ Phenomenal presentation, fantastic improvements to gameplay, and Color Your Night has been stuck in my head since I first heard it in game.
As an aside, thanks so much to Alex and the Backlog Battle community for recommending Octopath Traveler 2 for your 2023 GOTY! I decided to get into Octopath 1 and 2 for the first time this year thanks to that video, and they were magnificent experiences!
i just started grandblue fantasy and oh boy am i excited to put some hours in this one! im really liking the combat and i hear end game is when it gets really good!
Eiyuden Chronicle was awesome. Took a while to pickup, but it continued to get better & better the more I played.
Granted I played on PC & not Switch, but it was still an awesome time.
I own half these games. I've only played Rebirth. I'm still playing Rebirth. I just can't seem to get enough of it. Once i finish this (3rd) playthrough I'm going to force myself to start working through some other ones. Probably starting with Granblue Fantasy.
Rebirth is massive!
@@BacklogBattle it is, but I'm mostly playing now to absorb all the story details. There's nothing conclusive, of course, but I am coming up with theories I haven't seen discussed yet.
Pretty much everything on this list is something I'm looking forward to, but I've been on a real retro kick lately!
All these are definitely on my list, but it feels good to get some classics out of the backlog
No rest for the wicked is definitely the best of 2024 so far. We are in awe to see how big the game can grow
Unicorn Overlord was absolutely amazing. Planning on picking up Saga Emerald Beyond when it goes on sale.
Persona 3 Reload is an (almost!) perfect remake and is my game of the year thus far! As a big fan of Vanillaware Games, I'm ashamed to admit I have not yet picked up Unicorn Overlord, and I need to give it a try. But, in the short-term I'm looking forward to Senua's Saga next week and in the long-term Metaphor this fall!
I'm looking forward to your thoughts on TTYD. It was the first Paper Mario and Mario RPG game I played and I loved it so much. I also hope you check out Monster Hunter Stories if you haven't before.
If you want more on the history of Shift Up: look up Kim Hyung Tae who's the ceo, the MagnaCarta series, and Blade n Soul.
I *did* review Monster Hunter Stories 2! I figured since we're talking the first five months, I'll at *least* talk about TTYD!
God Mode in Hades and Hades2 is really good. It reduces the damage you take by 30%, and then an additional 2% reduction every time you die. It’s a great easier mode. :)
In terms of newer RPG's I've only played Hades II and Unicorn Overlord the later of which I finished about a month or so ago with over 100hrs of playtime and enjoyed every moment. Such a great game, highly recommend it. I was surprised back in early April with my mate giving me his old PS4 for my birthday after he bought a PS5, and after watching this I didn't realise that Relink, Sand Land and Infinite Wealth came too PS4 so I'll be adding those to my buy list. In terms of stuff still coming out I'm looking forward to that's easy: Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time and Death end re;Quest Code Z. (that last one still has no realese date for the West yet).
I definitely agree with Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes & Persona 3 Reloaded!
Definitely some good games on this list.
Only one of these I've played is Grandia - which is certainly worth playing. Gotta fire up that sequel sometime.
Definitely some games to look forward to playing. I will be picking up Granblue Fantasy, Dragon's Dogma 2, and Eiyuuden at some point for sure. Stellar Blade too if it comes to PC.
I’m still waiting on that “It” rpg for me.
Thanks Alex!
90% of my library is RPGs, and I'd consider Hades to be one of the best games I've ever played.
I'm not going to jump into the Early Access, but Hades 2 is my most anticipated game in many, MANY years.
Well yea, we’re only 5 months into 2024 and we already have so many rpgs that came out that are both good and great. Ff7 rebirth, stellar blade, DD2, eiyuden chronicles, all came out in just a span of 2-3months lol. Then we have other games release soon so the backlog of games is crazy and really is a year of rpg lol. Next yr is definitely gonna be a drought though.
Last year was hard to beat with the likes of BG3 and Sea of Stars in the running, but between P3R, Eiyuuden, and the masterpiece that is Unicorn Overlord, this year has been pretty spectacular as well.
This list is pretty solid, and together, imo, they collectively can match some of the best of last year!
Sea of stars was slightly above average, its good but not on like chrono trigger, xenosaga/xenogears/final fantasy level of depth and options
So far i think Infinite Wealth and Rebirth are in my top GoTy
I seriously thought Chadley was going to turn into some kind of hidden boss when i did all his sidequest
Grandia remasters are several years old but def great
Uhh would you consider another crab treasure as an rpg. Cause that’s been one of my favourite surprise this year 😭
It's definitely a Souls-like, so yes!
This year is crazy, if you say gaming is dying you must be high and playing normy generic games
Eiyuden looks like Suikoden - same dev ?
Yup! Exact same
Even has a bunch of people to recruit. Great game so far. I'm near the end.
Only 2024 release I've played so far is Dungeon Travelers 1 which got localised for PC back in February. Unsurprisingly, it got completely buried under all these other great games. I've mainly been playing backlogged Trails games so far this year ahead of Daybreak, which has been well worth the investment. Great list Alex!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I need Persona 3 reloaded on switch, i still have hope !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right now I'm waiting on a promo on Unicorn Overlod, this reviews are so good, they hype me up every time :3
I hope they're able to bring P3R on Switch!
switch 2 forsure
Get the asus ally rog it plays perfectly on it.
I would love to, but I live in Brazil :(@@michaelmacorso4479

Shiren the Wanderer 6 is a really great dungeon crawler -- sad to see no mentions in the comments here, which suggests to me that western JRPG fans are sleeping on it. Maybe the best game in this 30-year series ... coming in 2024!
Isn’t it out already?
@@BacklogBattle Yes, it came out in Japan in Jan, and US/EU in Feb. Personally, it's one of my "Best RPGs of 2024! (so far)"!!
But I guess I should say it's a dungeon-crawler, and roguelike -- so certainly wouldn't be to everyone's taste.
All right it’s great u are enjoying eyuden but comparing eyuden to Skyrim is really a stretch ;) For me not much this year in terms of rpgs but world of horror, rise of the ronin and redemption reapers I enjoyed a lot
Chad and mai...... As weapons why am i suddenly scared Alex?!?!
Why else would they collect all of this Intel? 🤔
@@BacklogBattle because chad is nerd.... Was my thought till you brought this up. And im still trying to get through the vr sims. If they become the weapons we are all so screwed lol
No way we discuss about 2024 being one of the best years in RPG history and we start with a SaGa game...
That is indeed how I started it
I really enjoying Infinite Wealth. Story wise it's not as good as LAD 7. But the gameplay, sidequest and minigames it's so much better
Unicorn Overlord is such a great game, I platinumed this game, I never bother with trophies or achievement but this game is kinda easy to plat and fun to play so I did everything, I'm also glad to see it's selling well, Vaniallware is precious it needs to stay alive.
Stellar Blade is fine (I'm currently playing it) but comparing it to Nier automata is very far from being accurate, they clearly were inspired by Yoko Taro work that much is true, but other than that, gameplay is good but the story and characters are very bland.
Unicorn Overlord (I refuse to call it UO) is definitely up there as one of my favorites! It's also a very easy Platinum, from what I've heard!
@@BacklogBattle Haha I do call it UO but being the old gamer that I am, I am reminded each time of Ultima Online lol
That's exactly why I don't call it UO! LOL!
Stellar Blade is one of the best games I’m played in years. 120+ hours and a platinum later and I’m still in love with the game. Absolutely incredible experience.
I want to play it!
Both JRPGs and CRPGs have constantly been shitting gold since July 2023's English Trails Into Reverie release.
I'd argue even earlier than that, with One Piece Odyssey in January 2023!
I been playing wasteland 3 I love it. It's my first crpg that makes me want to get baldur's gate 3.
Why did you have to remind me of Skyrim on the PS3?
Because somehow, people forgot that Skyrim was problematic at launch LOL
You missed Helldiver 2, one of best "rpg" this year
LOL
Unicorn overlord was amazing. I was super hyped for UO and FFVII Rebirth. Got rebirth, made it to the second area, got bored tbh. With Unicorn Overlord i no lifed the game and beat it in the first week of release. I also had played Ogre Battle 64 tho and that is one of my favorite games of all time, so i guess it's not too surprising.
As a long time SaGa series player
Emerald beyond is not good
It's scarlet grace again
The Series going downhill since unlimited which they should go back to snes formula
Romancing saga 3 is my favorite saga but the remaster is very disappointing
Half the framrate of the original
UI worse than the OG
Translations is pretty bad
The additional content is a joke
1 unused dungeon
hades 2 isnt an rpg
It's a rogue-like action RPG
roguelike through and through, lol @@BacklogBattle
I would say it's definitely a action rpg.
2024 RPGs are showing up!
Granblue ⏸️
Rebirth ✅
Stellar Blade ✅
Unicorn 🏃♂️
And now you got my attention for
No rest for the wicked 👀
It's really good! I'd love to talk about No Rest for the Wicked!
