14” Rough-In Toilet
Flange Repair Kit
Wax Ring
Flexible Supply Hose
Closet nuts and washers
Steps:
1. A standard toilet has a 12” rough in dimension- the distance from the wall to the toilet bolts.
2. If the new toilet location differs from standard, a 10” or 14” rough in toilet can be ordered to better fit.
3. Before doing any plumbing work, ensure water is off at the toilet and the tank and bowl are drained.
4. Remove the closet nuts holding the toilet to the floor.
5. Carefully remove the toilet.
6. Remove the old wax ring from the closet flange.
7. If the existing flange doesn’t have space to accommodate the new bolts, use a flange repair kit.
8. Use the wax ring to make a connection between the closet flange and the flange repair kit.
9. Secure the flange repair kit to the floor using a hand screwdriver.
10. Add a longer flexible supply hose to the shut off valve.
11. Bring the toilet in and ensure both bolts on the flange repair kit go through the bolt holes on the toilet.
12. Attach the toilet to the flange using a washer base, closet bolt, and bolt cap. The closet bolt may need to be cut off if too high.

I rotate my toilet every 12,000 miles or 350,000 dumps, whichever comes first
pippensculps mines a high performance toilet. It got some pretty sick upgrades. It’s got a larger tank, some custom billet internals, and some new drag racing washers and deep dish nuts to hold it on
(Edit) I just got done installing a new racing seat and a five point harness to keep me up for the long ones.
pippensculps 😂😂😂
Don't forget to balance it.
Toilet Fuze dang man I can’t afford that right now. I want to get a kit but first I have to get a new water line and fix the old head gasket flange.
Mine is lifted and I got the chrome delete
"Why don't you give it a test flush?"
Brian: Sits on toilet, drops a deuce.. not to waste any water of course... "works perfect".
🤣🤣🤣
lol
and accidentally sprays diarrhea all over the walls and Richards face
Hahah! Gave me a good laugh. Thanks!
Great job putting the toilet tank lid on Brian. A+++
Max Gelman lmao I thought he would fuck that up.
I scrolled down to say the same thing, it is too close to the wall.
By turning the toilet, it’s now off centered.. that’d drive me nuts
Integra DIY must be the OCD kicking in for you
Sure, but now you don't smack your head on the wall when leaning forward to wipe
mlindholm depends if your left or right handed
Good thing it's not your house. Put a shelf on the side or something
I’m going out on a limb and guessing you’re under 6 feet tall.
I hate it when it is so easy to do by others and so difficult to do by me. Love the video. Nice job.
M G a lot of it is knowledge, and that’s what CZcams is great for.
I remember that first time I saw an old wax ring...I thought it was something else.
O que liga o outro cara aquele cara lá que eu não sei porque se doido

😂
He barely touched it, c'mon, nitpicky, I'm more concerned of the dust he left after drilling bolts, I'm nitpicky too,😂
Lmfao best comment yet
Those one piece american standards were heavy, they guy should've lifted his own low-boy toilet
Wow im new at home work, fixing or trying to fix things around my house and i wanna say thank you .. im learning so much from you..
Those look like Douglas adjustable pliers........love those!!! Used to work at a plumbing wholesaler and we sold them too!!
In an older toilet installation the off set is 14”...when i replace older with newer toilet and 12” off set, i simply make a “frame” out of 2x4’s laid against the wall flat, screw to wall as high and wide as I want, screw a piece of 1/2” sheetrock on frame, paint and texture if needed, replace H2O supply pipe with longer one to come through sheetrock, cut a piece of 3/4” white pine a little wider than the 2x4 frame and approximately 3” wide to accommodate deodorant, shampoo etc. but not so wide i will hit my back on it while sitting on the new toilet, I will usually use my router to make a nice fancy finished edge on front and side(s) that show if necessary, use finish nails to anchor the new shelf to the 2x4 frame, paint it with glossy paint and now the toilet lid fits right up against the new ‘wall” with a new shelf area behind the toilet.
Picture?! This is a lot to follow :)
I had almost the exact same situation. Mine is on a cement slab. That hydro seal worked perfect.I was going to chip away cement and install toilet flange in the right direction, till I scene this.I had to use a regular wax seal without cutting it.
is it me or is that new toilet too close to the wall now lol.
It's just your left Leg
Depending on how much the client is willing to pay to redo the conections and floor tiles ^^, and flexibles in visual areas are unproffesional T_T use a solid crome pipe and bend it...
Yea sure is, but that's ok if you're drunk and have to take a dump. Unless you're a fatass....
Looks terrible now...
Pay the extra to center it. -__-;
You could install an offset flange for a few more inches.
But you would have to peel off the old flange
I would like to know the magic incantation spell he used that made the old bolts dissappear.
They just slide out
The toilet was in a perfect spot. I would of installed a flat screen tv on the wall in front of it.
i liked that little toilet
And, maybe he didn't want a new toilet, maybe he liked the blue lowrider
@kchilz32, Lol
At least the way it was before he could look out the window while sitting on the low-rider.
@@FriggOff361 it's a shitty size toilet the newer one Richard installed is much better
I always wanted to rotate a toilet.
A common problem I guess 😂
Now if only someone invented a toilet which would rotate like an office chair? And to make it even more fun, accompanied by some hurdy-gurdy music?!
George C. Spool a rope around the office chair toilet and attach the other end to a car.
I think a rocking chair toilet would be even more fun
Osha requirements are "all turds longer than six inches must be hand lowered to prevent hazardous water splash back"
Or over ten pound in weight.
Splash-back to the sack
I want to see a video called, "How to install a rotating toilet"... always wanted to continually spin while taking a dump.
Harsh! lol
Tá doido não sei porque tu vai se isso comigo
Ah não minha lua é assim mas eu gosto assim também eu também cara
Mascarello mais tem que quebra
O que é para caramba Socorro
Excellent job neat work👍
It’s like solving the problem and creating another problem to work with,
I feel like they really could have cleaned the tile a bit more before installing the toilet, and maybe even cleaned the flange a tad.
Martin Ladjimi it was cleaned? And why it will be under something that gets replaced every quarter century
Exactly. Im an apprentice plumber and i couldve done a better job. Hes just lazy. Clean the tile. Install a NEW flange instead of using an adapter on an old one thats probably ready to crack any day. Re caulk or re geout around the toilet as well. Just laziness.
Don't worry, that homeowner is gonna have to call a real plumber in about 3 months when that cheap hack of a flange starts leaking and he can clean it then.
Possibly not if it was marble tile, a terrible material to use on a floor.
@@ValexNihilist keep changing toilets apprentice and soon you will want it done as quickly as possible too. Who the hell wants to prolong such a gross job? Not me!
His heavy breathing was the star of this clip 👌🏻
Excellent - thank you (however, you forgot to show us that you had to 'saw off' the old bolts at floor level) I know because I had to do this on my condo. I am hoping to rotate my relative's toilet as he is in a wheel chair.
Richard is the man
The test flush is funny. We were setting fixtures at this custom home. It was this woman’s dream home. This is a town of 3,000 people in west Texas so I never once saw a port a potty on a job site even out in the country. You just went in the trees and if it was #2, you kept TP on your truck. If you were in town you either hid or went to a store or home. I quickly set the toilet and then peed. 5 min later the woman came to look at everything. I believe her exact quote was “y’all better not use them, this is my dream home so I get to baptize them myself”. Of course my response was “absolutely, we would never”.
My concern with this is how little elbow room you have on the side. It was small before on the other side but it is not much better, IMO. A corner toilet would come in handy in this situation. Set it diagonal and it is easier to reach tp holder and you get a little more leg room. You can turn a standard toilet at an angle but you get gap behind in the corner. I am concerned with how high the new flange is and how small the cone going in to the toilet is. That will restrict flow and I worry the toilet won't sit flush to the floor.
As a kid growing up in the 80's I always admired This Old House. Now being a licensed 20 year professional some of these video make me cringe because uneducated public doesn't know any better. Its common knowledge in the industry that 15" is the MINIMUM from center of a toilet to any fixture or wall on either side. The reason this toilet is not resting on the floor @6:15 is because the closet flange is too high. Finally, it IS CODE to caulk the toilet to the floor.....keep making videos like this this please because it will only give Professionals more work fixing these disasters.
That would never have passed inspection. I would have to re-rough the flange.
Caulking toilets to the floor hides any potential leaks. A small issue can turn into a huge rotted subfloor problem if the toilet is caulked.
GoodtimesDJsoundtech where do you live where it’s code to caulk the toilet to the floor?
GoodtimesDJsoundtech where do you live where it’s code to caulk the toilet to the floor? And also you ideally should have centered the toilet in the opening, but there isn’t actually a code that says 15” minimum in most states. And in some states it wouldn’t pass inspection with a 2” gap behind toilet tank.
Indiana..... Brush up on the IPC
"405.5 Water-tight joints.
Joints formed where fixtures come in contact with walls or floors shall be sealed."
Thanks for the video. How a toilet can be repositioned, let's say 1 feet away from current position?
I like seeing Richard doing the duck walk.
'if it were built in modern times.' Well, hindsight is 20/20 Richard.
Did you need a second wax ring above the adapter?
Omg, the comments. I just had surgery in my bellybutton yesterday. The doctor gave food restrictions, no sex, no heavy lifting and rest for 72 hrs. But what the doctor failed to mention is don’t go on you and especially don’t read the comments. Because I just can’t stop laughing. It hurst so much!
Just out of curiosity.. As far as i saw in these videos, in usa you use pvc pipes without any seal, glue them together and use wax rings for connections to toilet etc, correct? In EU (at least in germany), we have special PVC pipes with rubber selas / o-rings at the end. No need to glue, just push them together. Same goes for toilet or shower, you insert a pvc pipe into the toilet outlet (with a big rubber ring / seal) and the other end into the drainage pipe (which has it's own seal). Seems to me to be way easier.. Or am i missing something?
For comfort while sitting on a toilet you want a minimum of 15 from the wall to center (right and left). This toilet now has only 12 inches on the left while sitting down. So, you're going to lean one way while sitting. Yeah, I know it's better than it was but, you've just traded one uncomfortable dimension for another.
so what?
@@Fattony6666 For 1? It is code to be 15" from the wall.
mine is the same way, don't even notice it
@@Delekham Exactly
The turd won't know.
Richard is a good teacher, telling each thing he's doing. Kudos; a well-made video John 14:6
I great video ...I have the same old toilet how can you help me change it to a modern toilet... thanks
How close was it to the wall on the left from the seated position? Might just be me but with the 12 inch center spinning the toilet you are 3 inches short on the required 15 inches. :O
when I installed my first toilet I tried using an angle grinder to cut off the tank bolts. I ended up burning the porcelain with the sparks LOL. Thankfully some furious scrubbing with a non-scratch scotch pad sanded away most of the evidence
Not sure if this is a better layout. Everytime a person sits on the throne, they'll be hugging the wall.
Great for napping.
Did it meet code for clearance side to side?
The original placement was perfect. Could get some great power dumps. Put the feet on the wall in front and squeeze a long one off.
Richard wore gloves, Ha learned the lesson since the last video cleaning toileta
I wonder where that house is located that doesn’t have plumbing codes. I have never seen anywhere in the U.S. that would allow the toilet to pass a plumbing inspection (in either installed positions). You would think a reputable magazine would inform its readers to always follow the plumbing codes.
Richard, why didn’t you use the OFFSET toilet flange so that you GAIN 1.5 to 2 inch of space to the right side of the LEG.
Also, an offset flange means you don't have to buy the taller holy water stoup.
Offset toilet flanges are actually against code because the choke off the 3" minimum pipe size at the center of the offset
Offset flanges are against code just about everywhere. But also most code requires 18" from center to walls on all 3 sides, so this likely isn't to code either.
The only reason a offset flange is so called illegal is because you can't get a caulking tool in half of the flange to make a good and proper lead joint .so on to abs or plastic flanges the offset does not choke off the 3 " minimum size and you are able to get a good glue joint so there now ya know
IRC Here is 15 side to side and 21 in front.
Where can I get that blue flange? Is the blue metal? Painted blue? You do not need more wax between the toilet and the flange?
… You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
Would be fun to have a toilet on a big ball bearing so it’s like an office chair.
damn, the best idea! XD
But, they spun left.
CCPaintballvideos or three times right
@@liquidpete Came in to say this lol
Great camera work not showing the ugly water line coming out the side wall!
I noticed that you had to install shims at the back of the toilet base which you did not mention on the video. Apparently there are no code requirements where this was done that specified minimum space to the sidewalls. It looks rather tight.
I think the toilet was already violating code by having only 14" from center of toilet to wall. Minimum required is 15".
With this kind of rotation, instead of the center of a persons’s body being 14 “ from the right hand wall, they are now 12” from the left wall.. that will be very uncomfortable unless the old partition wall is removed. Even the previous 14 “ was too close for proper comfort.
I always wanted to rotate a toilet
Very informative. Thanks.
What about the 30” minimum width code requires for a toilet?
3:03 that did not swivel cause the screws where holding it to the floor
4:51 "I don't wanna over tighten them. I don't want to over torque them with a drill either"...... Then grunts when tightening them lol
I just replaced a toilet that looked like the old one here, it was also blue. Was nearly impossible to find replacement parts like the flapper.
I do like the lower ones tho....makes pooping easier!
What kind of toilet is that? The blue one?
No idea, it was put in @ 1986
Gies a whole new meaning to sit on it and rotate
Impressing ! 👍
If you wanted the toilet centered would that involvle some demo work on the floor or are there other methods?
Offset toilet flange. Possibly some minor demo, but you wouldn't have to move the waste pipe.
Should have vacuumed dust out of drilled holes before inserting screws, right?
Anybody else have to stop eating lunch until this was over?.
I like your job
It's funny they always say the new 1.3 gallon toilets save water. But they don't mention that you have to flush them three or four times to get everything flushed down.
Want to encourage hand-washing? Have people watch this video.
Take a microbiology course. That will make handwashing very regular during the course and for a few weeks after the semester.
The blue replacement flange… who is the manufacturer? Is there a part number?
Nice
I never saw a white wax ring before, is that something new? A different type of wax maybe?
TheOtherBill I went waxless
i was looking for the polish rotating toilet meme and found this
Everyone saying the toilet is too close to the wall, I ask do you shit sitting in the living room and flush in bathroom? Toilet looks fine. Old one was literally hugging the wall.
If it's a code issue, they could easily get an exemption due to how old so 8 was for wheelchair access and there's no demolition involved
Right? It’s better that having your knees jammed against the original wall.
First I learned how to rotate my Owl, now this....
Is there anything I can't learn on CZcams?
What’s the blue thingy called?
Cool
My Fiance owned a cape cod home built in 1943. The toilet flange seemed to be quite far off the wall. In fact, there was probably a 6" gap between the back of the tank and the wall. To top it off, it was an elongated toilet! Talk about a crammed bathroom! Was this normal for old construction to have the flange so far away from the wall?
No, someone probably didn't know what they were doing or a remodel occurred and they didn't want to move the waste pipe ?
Bathroom was in the same place as with all of the other neighboring cape cod homes in that area, so I doubt they moved the bathroom wall. Dimensions of the bathroom were also the same.
She remodeled the bathroom, tile floor, tile tub surround, new vanity, mirror, cabinet, etc. In hind sight, an offset toilet flange would have helped but we didn't think about it at the time. I really don't care for elongated toilets, especially in small bathrooms. Anyway, I'm about the only person that has ever noticed or mentioned how far the toilet tank was away from the wall. But honestly, we were able to paint the wall behind the toilet entirely without moving the toilet. Talk about a gap!
Sounds like it's all good then !!
Besides sticking out so far.
No wax ring between toilet and new flange plate?
I don’t know but I would of moved water line more professional as for centering toilet that’s a hard choice do I center it in opening or with window. But all counts on what homeowner wants to spend
The step removing/cutting down the previous screws was not shown.
How necessary are spacers? I keep seeing TOH use them in videos. If it we're my house I wouldn't care if the toilets off level by a fraction of an inch. I prefer it to be snug and flat on the floor vs having that nasty gap and teetering on those spacers Everytime I take a dump.
DesecratedReaper Was Those shims are more for stopping the toilet from rocking and not leveling, as many new toilets are not baked flush at the bottom and tile floors are not flat half the time either
Looks like that adapter actually restricts the opening a bit. Isn’t that a potential problem?
AlergicToSnow looks like it's upside down
Many adapters do, especially the ones that slide inside of the old flange. NOT GOOD! They're going to have to use that plunger, on top of the newer low flow toilet.
u install it that way then push the rubber in the hole b4 u place the toilet (he bent the rubber up out of the way for the first few steps)
fat guy foraging you can tell it's not upside down because the screw down ears are close to the floor.
Richard they make a corner toilet that’s looks better than what you did that would of been the best solution besides tearing the floor and repiping.
Gonna be favoring the right side of the toilet with the wall so close on the left side lol
Do y'all recommend caulking around the base of the stool or not caulking? I've always run a bead of caulk around the base to keep any moister out that might get under in the event of a toilet over flow but never see any pro's do it, why?
I can't speak for the "pros", but I've been a landlord for decades. Depending on the caulk, especially silicone, dirt collects in the soft material and looks filthy. And it's a pain to clean up when a new toilet is installed. As to toilet overflows, if they are due to a clogged trap, the caulk may help. But if it's due to a clogged 4" line I would rather see an early sign, like water leaking past the wax gasket, especially on wood floors. The bathtub normally fills with waste first on a clogged 4" line. If you want to caulk, I would leave a 4-6" gap at the back of the bowl.
I believe it's code in California to caulk around any toilet on a tile floor. Personally, I think you are better off not using caulk. If the wax ring ever fails, you might see the water seepage beginning and catch it before it destroys the floor.
Caulk helps to stabilize the bowl when it hardens
richard is in every plumbers wet dream
I think he was offended by the airliner joke lmfao
What if I want to rotate it on the x axis.
Oh… I was hoping to put mine on the ceiling…. 🙃🚽
Like he really guessed that accurately 😂😂😂
Yeah that toilet not being centered and the supply being off to the side is bugging the hell out of me.
I assume you don't have to have 16" side clearance in your area
Code where I live is 16" clearance each side of the toilet
1.3 gallon... Have a good plunger handy
Those are clearly 12x12 tiles, as such even with rotating the toilet, it isn't positioned correctly. The centreline of the toilet needs a minimum of 15 inches clearance to any instructions... like a wall by code. This toilet only has approximately 12-13 inches clearance from the toilet centerline as newly positioned.

And the plumbing experts who can or think they can do better comments can now start.
kman 4443,
Jealous that you aren't one of them?
We just have a life, unlike you
kman 4443 Us Master Certified Toilet Techs are gonna tear this up.
kman 4443 Do you need someone to spin the ladder while you rotate your terlet?
Gee Barney did you think of that all by yourself or did mommy help you when she brought your sandwich to the basement?
Almost six months back we changed the wax ring and now it is again leaking from the roof. After close observation I found that it is leaking only when I sit on the toilet seat and flush. The handyman came and flushed 10 times but couldn't find any leaking. Now he want to cut the sealing to see what is exactly happening. Can any of you advise me what could be the exact problem here? Is there any way to fix this problem without cutting the sealing?
I'm no plumber and think your problem is probably solved by now--1 year later. If it wasn't, I was going to recommend a product called Perfect Seal Toilet Wax Ring that you can buy at any big box store. I'm guessing your flange might be too low. This product can be used for flanges below and at floor height. I only thing I would recommend about this product is to replace the Johnny Bolts that come with it. They are plated steel and will rot. Swap them out with brass ones. Otherwise I think this is a good product.
maybe take less massive dumps?
No hammer drill on the set ?
Never hammer drill tile, could crack it.
I have always wondered why is it wax under the toilets and not plumbers putty?
Plumbers putty actually deteriorates over time the wax doesn't
actually, most regular toilets could fit down to 10 inches(maybe a little more depends on different models). although manufacturers make SR toilets. just experience.
I remember looking at a house 1s that was for sale and the home owners still lived in it ... looked at there beautiful master bathroom..nice granite counter tops and there toilet with a huge Log in it I was like wtf!!!..walked right out that place laughing and grossed out!
Lorenzo Reyes Nothin’ like a nice clog log in the toilet to stage a house for sale! Ha Ha Ha Ha! Someone should have reminded the person that there was an open house that day & to flush the toilet especially after launching a massive Poopedo.

great job richard however the home owner will have to move that tp dispenser because i dont think he would be able to reach from the back side. lol
is the hole on the flange not small for solids. lol
