They really were ahead of their time. A lot of Indie bands are trying to do this sound now. This is pure magic.
Like us hahaha
Your comment is a bit "time travel movie", since a lot of bands now are taking their cues precisely from the likes of Slowdive.
Sonic youth
If you knew Cocteau Twins you would know they gave birth to this genre. Elizabeth Frazer's vocal style paved the way for shoegaze dream pop albeit that term came in 1988 when A.R. Kane were the ones to coin the term “dream pop” in the first place, with founding member Alex Ayuli first using it to describe their band’s sound.
@@jamesnolan4412I grew up in the 80s/90s so I can say I know quite a bit about The Cocteau Twins and what Shoegaze is ;) . I'm not talking about who invented Shoegaze genre though, I'm talking about how they were mixing elements of Shoegaze, Alternative Rock, Newwave into a beautiful modern Indie Rock cocktail, So I'll say it again, they were still ahead of their time.
I love how much Cheryl is trying to hold back her fangirling but is still just so excited for them to be in front of her
She's one of the luckiest people alive in my opinion think of the shear amount of talent and amazing bands she's had the privilege of seeing 10 feet away from her?!!!!
Cheryl is so precious. You can tell how much genuine passion she has for music. She's definitely my favourite moderator ever and I'm glad she gets to do this job.
@@Wischmopp95 how much do you get paid for cockslobbering comments like this lol
Thank you youtube for learning me what fangirling is. Music is more or less well known mainstream pop, sorry but my opinion.
Cheryl reached her celestial shoegaze supernova just like we all did with this absolutely beautiful record.
Listening to this album when you are the only car on the motorway at 1am is heaven
That sounds dreamy
Sound Enginneer - How much reverb do you want?
Slowdive - Yes.
😂😂
The band sounds like they play inside a gymnasium that's inside yet, another gymnasium, but one that's been thrown into deep-sea waters LOL
LMAO
I really hate this sort of trendy commenting that has infected the internet. It's not funny or clever, it's desperate and needy.
@@theorncampbell4432 um...the tracks have tons of reverb an no one said it was a bad thing. Im a musician and produce. If this makes you angry that people mention reverb maybe you need to do some soul searching on why your allowing your emotions to agrivate you. Best of wishes and love.
they made a correct choice getting back together in mid 10s right when all this dreampop ,indie, lo-fi sound resurfaced
"resurfaced"?
combustinghandshakes got fancy again
Me too.
Cocteau Twins did it first
500th like yay
This old shoegaze fan is tearing up watching this.
and sounds like the host is an old fan too!
Ian McCausland Cheryl is a spectacular host, the best on KEXP, and if I'm not wrong she really is a big fan of Slowdive. Oh she definitely has good taste in music!
Not only is it grand/amazing/precious this band is back together....
...their new album is fantastic.
Eleven years ago, when I first truly got into them, I NEVER would have imagined the two aforementioned facts would come to fruition.
Amazing!
Ian McCausland the first song had my mind going to another world. Never really listened to slowdive but this video changed everything
Ive been listening to Slowdive since the 1800s and they are still excellent Over 200 years later. .
I'm 61 years old and I'm wondering how I could've missed this. This ethereal music is, for lack of a better way of stating it, pure Magic. I found Myself lost in a void while listening. I was on the verge of tears, but I was brought joy at the sight of These Masterful Musicians working Their Craft. The Guitars were awesome, as were the Vocals. I love it All. Thank You for this. I appreciate.
jonnybgoode007: Well said young person!
Im 64 and said the same shit...
Well, you weren't very late at all to discover these songs since this album is quite recent. The band had some majorly influential songs (and one of the best albums of this style) back in the early 90s, but all of these songs were first recorded and performed around this taping.
So there you go!
Besides, it is NEVER too late to discover wonderful art like this.
@@TheRhussmann small correction, 'Crazy For You' is actually an awesome cut off their last 90s album, Pygmalion. Stoked they liked that track enough to include it with the new material here.
Music defies time
The guitar intro to "Crazy for you" kills me everytime..Sublime melancholy.
I love it myself
It is excellent, I jog to many of the songs on Pygmalion.
Omg yessss it's my favorite song of them and it gave so much chills
The performance of the first song is something that I cannot explain with words.
I
yes
Straight brought me to tears. Unbelievable!
No shit!
@Giovanni Macias thats because he was beyond words to describe how amazing the song is.....daaaaaaa!
The band killed it, but folks, let's give it up to the Audio Engineer (Kevin Suggs). My man Kevin is next level bad ass Audio Engineer.
It's really not common for a band to be dormant that long and put out a banger. Love Slowdive so much.
SunHead check out the last album by Ride
agreed, but have you seen Ride? still got it almost 30 years later.
Did everyone forget My Bloody Valentine? I'm amazed they did theirs years back.
and not forgetting Mazzy Star. It must be a shoegaze thing; a genre of honesty and class
It happens from time to time. Failure did it well
I used to know those guys when we were kids. It's weirdly emotional.
Nick Taylor that's crazy
Really?
Nostalgia!
Personally?
@@melancholia7010 it's not that difficult, Berkshire is not that big of a town
I'm 40 now, I do feel blessed to have listened to Slowdive since I was in my 20's. Rare group.
I'm 43.
I also started listening Slowdive in my 20's. It was two years ago.
I am 45 now...but I have listened to them since 2001, thanks to a friend, what a gift!! wonderful...
Im 48 and went to many shows in the 90’s.
My Bloody Valentine
Lush
Slowdive
Just from that genre of incredible music that lives on
Each time I hear the male voice songs of Slowdive, I get the impression to hear the most intimate thoughts of a lonely man talking to himself at the end of the day.
00:40 Slomo

Peace any country.
Here's a band that really knows how to use pedal effects and sounds almost identical to the studio album
It's like U2 but actually good
Walamonga 1313 You don’t know what you’re saying. But I get the idea... But you don’t know what you’re saying, SD wishes they ever had the mastery to craft songs that U2 used to have in the 80s to the mid 90s. Or even half of it.
Enrico Pastore Not that that has always to be the best way, but here it’s great, I agree
Enrico Pastore saw them live in some club in la in the early 90s. They sound identical live as in studio.
@@javiceres You don't know what you're saying. Slowdive made one of the greatest shoegaze records of all time with souvlaki.
This KEXP performances are unbelievable.
The sound engineers are magicans.
Sound guy understood the assignment. The outro of slomo sounds better than the damn album!
You know a band is good when even after almost 30 years, they manage to put out an album that is still relevant. Some of my favorite songs of them are from this last album abd I find this to be very impressive, especially since they've been out for 22 years. It's not like they've been writing songs together during these two decades. They truly amaze me.
it doesn't even feel like 30 years, your comment hit me haha. they're just timeless yet they give me that high school nostalgia 90s drama vibe.
@Nathan Guerrette dit Latulippe Dude you are so wrong. There new album was one of the best albums I've heard in years. Every day I have a new favorite song off it. Even better than their old stuff.
Emile Lord Ayotte They've actually been playing as Mojave 3 throughout the late 90's/00's
@@Ninatoro39 For me it was the 10 Years after college nostalgia mid 90'e lost in confusion vibe!!
@@garster61 college nostalgia is the best
Finding Slowdive in 2019...late to the party but damn this is exciting. So amazing
Same here!!! They are amazing
Me too brother.
That's true: listening to Slowdive is like getting late to the party, when everyone is drunk and sleepy, and yet deep in your heart you know that there's still time...
Found them back in january this year, great departure from a 7th grade green day addict back in 2016
Congratulations to everybody in this comment thread. Good music never dies.
Sugar for The Pill is an amazing song.
Yep and it doesn't make me cry at all
Bass player is playing a thunderbird while wearing a t shirt of Kim Gordon playing a thunderbird, sick
That's what I was looking at lol
ThunderBird-Ception

Very Simon Gallup
Thanks, I was wondering who was on his shirt.
Cheryl jamming in the background is the most precious thing
2023 and going. Brilliant music. Completely missed them back then, but wont miss them again.
Nobody plays guitar like slowdive 😂
Who's still listening in 2022? Because i am and loving this more than ever.... pure perfection 🥰 keep going Slowdive 🙏
Gets better every moment that goes by. But also not appreciated for what it is. A damn good vibe. Reason? IDK... But sounds damn good nevertheless...
2023 now
You'll be happy to know that the band has finished work on their 5th studio album.
Listening to them in 2024 cause I listened to them in the 1990s
2024 now
Just discovered Slowdive at the tender age of 50 and I love their music, I've a lot of catching up to do....
Discovered them while KEXP bingeing last week. I'm 52. 😀
They've been consistently good from the beginning.... even their early stuff is at this level. I, too, am glad they've released new material.
I think I found them on MTV's "120 Minutes" back in the early 90's... Then, their track "Blue Skied An' Clear" appeared in the movie "The Doom Generation". I was hooked.
I envy you.....enjoy.....it's a beautiful ride!
Ha! Me too! I'm 52 and really really loving this band
Racheal is so humble. It's cool how the band seems to get along. Obviously the Lush reunion really collapsed because the band couldn't stand each other any more. These guys are back in force. Their new songs sound great and this is a really tight performance. Old and young fans appreciate Slowdive and other shoegaze bands because there is so much attention to the sonic experience.
One of the best sounding kexp sessions I've seen. Absolutely spot on from the sound engineers and of course to slowdive for an incredible set
Heston Blumenthal engineered to perfection. Really, really good.
Heston Blumenthal BTW. Is that really you? I had my 40th at the Fat Duck, so if it is, thanks! (And Andy Taylor was my Food Chem Tutor....).
Spot on Heston 👍
How do they sound that good? Their tone is so on point
Cory Y. That’s what twenty five years will do for a band.
Tone shaping requires much time, as Richard G aptly notes. That, and a solid signal path, ending in those lovely Roland amplifiers. The ability for band members to perpetually adjust tone and dynamic to meet each other's efforts is a skill set only made available by effort, patience, and time together. I adore everything about this band and their work. I wish them happiness, for that's what they've presented to me.
KEXP actually have really good sound engineers too. Listen to any live performance they host
Yeah, I'm always surprised how good these live performances sound.
Practice
Slowdive changed me♡
Can we take a second to recognise the incredible rhythm section. Special shout to Nick and Simon. Amazing. Subtle, musical, emotional.
My soul is healing. Thank you.
Without a doubt Slowdive is one of the most underrated bands around imho. Neil Halstead is a true artist. Bravo - great session.
how are they underrated exactly? every music critic gave this album top rankings and i don't know anyone who doesn't hold them in high regard either from their first iteration or their reunion
Been listening to them since 16.. 20 years have passed but every time I listen to them I close my eyes and it’s like a blanket of warm light surrounds me.
They sound better than they used to in 90's! And the new album is a masterpiece.
How many reunions like this has world of music seen?
Jan it was my son how got me back into these , I was a big fan of them in the 90s . He found one of my CDs and started looking for them on CZcams . So glad he did as it brought me here.
This group of people have blessed the world with some of the most beautiful, emotional, and magical music ever made and yet they havent been nearly appreciated enough.
My heart exploded watching & listening to this
Slomo❤️ I can't forget this amazing song rest of my life.
I can't explain it, but some of their songs just instantly move me to tears. I used to think it was nostalgia for the time of Souvlaki, but the newer record had the same effect. It's so wonderful that they're still in the world making these marvelous sounds. Is ot too much to hope for another album?
They are working on a new album for release end of this year
Your wish has been granted ! Everything is Alive is awesome !
their music feels as big as the whole world
yes!!!
Sugar for the pill is such a beautiful song
Man, I wish these KEXP performances were available on Spotify... I don't have access to CZcams when I'm camping, and that's my favourite time to sit and listen
Download the audio and you could listen like that. Just look up youtube to mp3 converter
When Rachels voice comes in at 3:12 to harmonise... Perfection ❤️
Nice to see you here, you do a great music
Great find--yes--so eerie and lush--sounds almost like a flute...
whoever engineered this is a legend
1200 years later... Slowdive still tops the charts 🖤
They're so fucking neat. It's almost miraculous how great they sound live. I can't help but get really emotional seeing them back like this, with such vitality and coherence. The comeback of the century, no doubt. Shoegaze is alive bish!
Star Roving is a masterpiece and an instant classic.
Cheryl Waters is that cool auntie with epic taste in music that everyone wishes they had in their family.
Love Cheryl's reactions to this session, are quite similar to everybody's reactions who genuinely loves Slodive
This session is just perfect. I remember seeing Slowdive at Rock City in Nottingham in 1990 supporting Ride on their Going Blank Again tour. I rushed out and bought the first EP. I have all their original Creation EP’s and, of course all the original issues of the albums. To have them reunite and produce their best work is a gift. Slowdive is possibly my favorite record of all time. And with a huge, eclectic record collection, that really is saying something. I wish I could thank them in person.
I was there....didn't Chapterhouse also support them? Two support acts then Ride.
@@robertfoster7384 I can’t remember! Maybe!
@@final_mile_music9713 after posting this I thought maybe it was Chapterhouse supporting Curve at Rock City, great venue and great music back then.
@@robertfoster7384 Curve were fucking awesome live. Saw them at Birmingham university.
Ug, to have seen them along with Ride must have been a privilege
KEXP's studio sound recording and photography/video set a standard that few have yet to attain.
This might be the best live performance I’ve ever heard
I love how the host is just jamming in the background like a tambourine player that never gets the cue to come in.
Oh dear; I've been a Slowdive (& Mojave 3 & Neil Halstead) fan for longer than I care to remember. And I missed this one!!! 🙄
Better late than never.
KEXP sound engineers have done a super job, as always...
Thank you Slowdive. Thank you KEXP. Saw them live in 4/9/94 in Boston, they let me back stage for a visit a beer and a smoke. Great moment in my life. Truly a legendary and gracious band
Back when people found new music at record shops I bought Souvlaki for the cover. The rest is history and Slowdive, 25+ years later is still in my top 3. Seeing all original members here playing new music is special and emotional.
i bought a lot of albums like that.
it's how i "discovered" dinosaur jr. in like 1992
slowdive is my favorite !
Sigur Ros is my 2nd fave
& beach house prob #3 since 1990
since this video was uploaded, once in a week i came back to listen to this....
This is the most beautiful music in the universe....💜
No, it's simple and boring
Oh dear.....🥺
This is definitely my new favorite type of music.
Nothing beats the KEXP sessions! Always the best sound, the best visuals. What a way to discover a new artist! Thanks guys!
That spaced out reverb guitar sound is just heavenly, loving it, sadly missed this band back in the day, by god am I making up for lost time now, pure dope.
that jazzmaster is one if not the most gorgeous guitar i’ve seen, i’m in love
I LOVE CHERYL WATERS
Slomo is such a beautiful song, brings tears to my eyes every time I take a road, I say goodbye to someone
Give me your heart
It’s a curious thing
I really love it when a band comes back after years and puts out a killer record.
120 minutes will forever be the one that showed me shoegaze and I am grateful to have heard so many amazing bands and that the genre lives on
I love dreampop!
I just discovered them. I can’t believe I never heard there music before. I love it!
I guess better late than never.
*Points to delay and reverb pedals*
"These ones go to 11"
Haha
By far the best of all the band reunions. Ride is a close second.
So glad they did Crazy for you
Same, this rendition was perfect as well!
How lovely, been waiting for this one to be released in months! I had the great pleasure in talking to them after their show in Argentina and it was speechless, not to my surprise they are touring a lot since 2014. They all gave us so much attention, I was crazy to get my Just for a Day´s copy signed and they were kinda shocked about the fact this was my fave album being only 25 years old. Neil said I was too young for that and had a laugh. Chris was also too lovely when I first tried to approach him while the stupid security guy would yell at me saying "Go away!". We talked a lot about music and how it can affect our emotions. Great night! Amazing band, very solid new album and very honest musicians! Thank you so much KEXP!
sounds like an amazing experience!
I took a flight from Comodoro Rivadavia just to go to that show and It was one of the most magical days of my life.
@Juan Binckoski Juan Binckoski amazing! I am actually brazilian but currently living in Bs As. I don’t think I would’ve had the same luck to meet them outside that away, Niceto Club place is pretty small comparing to the where they played in Brazil!
Luana Melo I'm glad younger generations are finding this great music! Especially Slowdive who never got the recognition they deserved, massively overshadowed by My Bloody Valentine, who I also enjoy but don't like nearly as much as Slowdive. They take shoegaze to more somber and subtle territories rather than shredding my ear drums. There's so much air and space in their songs that make them even more powerful than mbv heaviest and loudest material. When slowdive does come up from a whisper to a shout, its majestic and beautiful. Quite often, less is more and Slowdive is a prime example of how that works.
Also, check out Beach House if you haven't. Very similar vibes, especially their Bloom record and on.
Is so amazing to read this, they actually seem to be very nice people and i love their song. Is something that makes me dream, while listening the instrumental
Wonderful wall of sound, and kudos to KEXP sound guys👏
They come back from my 90’s playlist of youth. In those days I was more of a 4AD kind of guy, but Souvlaki still haunts me today. Thanks to KEXP I got to find them again. Great band, after all these years. Cheers!
Seeing the video i just had this sensation like if you see the person you like in front of you
Brilliant. Hearing this is like meeting up with an old friend, forgot all about them but as soon as you meet you immediately click.
That slomo performance is one of the best live performances I’ve ever heard
AHHHH. I needed this. Again. IDK how many times I've come to listen to this sublime music. I don't care. It saves my soul. Thanks to all concerned.
As beautiful as ever. A very welcome return.
Man they created an entire universe.
Me: ...Keeps turning up the volume.
Souvlaki was and is still amazing.
i've always been a metal fan but today the mystery of life showed me this band. I listened Souvlaki and shit what can i say... it made me feel sooo relax like i was in a road trip i had this picture of me driving my car during the sunset in summer smoking a joint...
Same metalhead me too i discover alcest and after discover them

Fuzz club ...
Their sound is so organic it’s unbelievable in all the positive way.
Slowdive sure was waaaay ahead of their time in terms of sound.
Their music has an anchoring feeling from my younger days when I was first introduced to them. And oh they were some special feeling of love
So humble and beautiful.
Recently exposed to Slowdive. This is a marvelous group of musicians!!! I’m a big CTwins, and Ulrich Schnaus fan, and this glory bridges the gap!! Thank you so much!!!
Slowdive were a major inspiration for Ulrich Schnauss. He even covered Crazy for You on his debut album.
This made tear up for some reason
It was an emotional rollercoaster
So much happiness, so much sadness

Big love from Indonesian, thanks KEXP ❤
KEXP got me listening to a lot of new bands and love the hosts and guests. Just good music vibes as always.

Slowdive has been in my life for 30+ years now, when I discovered their music, I was a hardcore raver, the Madchester scene was over, and rave music was splitting off in all directions. but slowdive would keep me grounded, even when high as a kite! Someone mentioned these were ahead of their time, oh how I do agree with that sentiment, they were so ahead of every other band, they may have been a part of Madchester scene, but their heads and shoulders above their peers, the Charlatans, Inspiral tribe etc, no group can do dreamy like slowdive, not really, they try but, it falls short every time, but not slowdive, they deliver every time!
I'd say Cocteau Twins are on par with Slowdive.
@@Mindphaser1 I couldn’t agree more. I discovered the Cocteau Twins in the mid 80s which opened my world up to a magical world of soundscapes I had never experienced before. It eventually led me to Slowdive. No words can express the amount of joy and pure emotion Slowdive has provided in the last 30 years.
