You saved my life.... Thanks! Reminded me of why I hated drum brakes.. Took 2 hours to do 1 side and 15 minutes on the other..

EA - Thank You so much for a helpful, informative video! I have a 2019 Elantra SE and now that the warranty has run out I am doing most of the repairs & maintenance myself. Despite all the Auto Parts sites (Rockauto, Amazon, Oreillys, Advance, Autozone, etc) saying my car has rear disc brakes, I jacked up the rear, took off the wheels and found DRUMS!! I had never done Drum Brakes before so I stopped what I was doing and put everything back together.
Despite viewing over a dozen YT videos on doing Drum Brakes, none showed the details of what i would run into with Hyundai Rear Drums. But YOUR video here is the only that shows what I will run into. Again, thank you. If I ever meet you, I'd be honored to shake your hand and first round is on me.
Throughout your video it was loaded with good advice. Take lots of close-up pics for orientation, how-to's, etc. The main thing that threw me off before I found your video were the Shoe Hold Springs & Pins. But now I know how to deal with that too!
The only thing I am fixing to do different from your video is I ordered an 8-piece Drum Brake Toolkit from Amazon for $33. It had the most ratings, with a 4.5 star rating. Once Saturday rolls around so I can start early and take my time, I'll jack the car up and get back to it. I subscribed to your channel and I'm looking forward to seeing more Hyundai stuff.

Thanks man! Really helpful. Made this easier than I expected. I have a base model 2014 Elantra which is the same system as your Accent.
And thanks to the helpful comments and advice family. Cheers.

Here is the million dollar question. I installed my new shoes and it was a struggle to get my drums back on even with the adjuster rod set at zero. How much of this is because of new equipment needing to be broken in or how much of it is because something might be on incorrectly.

Very good video, people will be using this for a long time! I would like to add one thing. Pay attention to the bottom ears on the shoes and make sure they get and stay behind the holder. If the bottom spring is loose check and make sure they are in place.

One helpful tool to take the springs on or off was a pair of Needle-Nose ViseGrips. I have a large pair and a small pair. In this case, I used the small Needlenose Vise Grips and taking the springs on or off was easy.

Wow. That was a GREAT video! You covered EVERYTHING! Every other video I watched on this had lots of "magic" in them. "Alright, just tap the drum a bit between the lugs....." and POOF! Meanwhile it appears to be eight hours later, and the guy is all out of breath.

    • @EverythingAvron
      @EverythingAvron  Před 2 lety +1

thank you!! and most breaks may not come off that easy. Depends upon how good of shape they are when you get the vehicle, which these probably weren't ever looked at. haha But we got 'er done!!👍

  • @TheFvonreiche

Agree that it was a great video, especially with the installation. Something to add though. The handbrake shoes is different, depending on the passenger side and the driver's side. The "wrong" shoe will not install at all on the wrong side. 2. Once both shoes have their clips and before attaching the holding springs, try using a g clamp to to hold the shoes together. (If you not have a G clamp, then use string or a thin rope to hold the shoes together. There is a spring in the slave cylinder that pushes the shoes apart. Only when the shoes fit snugly together can you check/know that the adjuster is installed correctly. If the adjuster is not installed correctly the handbrake with not work! There is also a good chance that brake flued might leak into the drum area and come on the drum surface. The only way to know to do something right is by doing it wrong!

Meanwhile, I have run into a big problem. On my Hyundai 2019 Elantra SE the rear drums have two flathead drum bolts holding the drum onto the rest of the brake assembly. I had to use an Impact Driver and Liquid Wrench penetrant to remove the bolts. But the real problem was putting the drum back on after installing the new pads.
I was able to get the drum on somewhat easily. And the drum would turn with just a tiny bt of drag. THat is no problem because the drum brakes will self-adjust after slamming on the brakes while in Reverse. But here's my main problem now - when I screw the flathead bolts back onto the drum, the drum wont turn at all! What the heck?? Loosen the bolts a tiny bit, the drum turns. But tighten them down, the drum wont turn.
I'm taking a WildA$$ Guess here at one of two fixes here - 1) compress the cylinder rams all the way in AND/OR 2) adjust the star wheel all the way in so there's no threads showing and it is pulling the pads inwards as much as possible. ANyone got any ideas? I could really use some, especially since I blew out an o-ring in my lower back and my muscles are in spasm. Its making things pure hell right now.

Next Day Update: back still blown out. But yesterday with the help of a fishing buddy the brake drum problem was solved. The lower tab where the small spring holds together the two lower end of the brake shoes had one brake inside the tab as per spec. But the rear brake shoe was just outside of the tab, making the side of the shoe stick out too far and preventing the wheel from turning.

dang that's intense... Overall I absolutely hate drum breaks.. First chance I get, or if I find one in the junk yard.. Im taking the rear training arm assembly off of a Hyundai Accent that has Disc brakes! They aren't too common and are the top trim level. But I will find one one day!

My Accent is a 2006 but I think the process is the same. Actually, the car looks more like a 2005. If I order parts for a 2006 they're always wrong. I think they had some 2005s left over, dressed them up a bit, called them "sport" and sold them as 2006s. I'm okay with that. I love that little car.

Yes should be very similar to 2006-2011... In general most Drum brakes on any vehicle are extremely similar if not identical. Most of the times, the sizes is what varies.
