Nice
Well done
Hell yes! Please get him to break down the new trailer!
Definitely want to hear everything the goat Jackson Crawford has to say about as much as he is willing to do.
Definitely
This take actually makes sense because based on how they built Thor up in the first game it reflects on his slothful and hedonistic nature to party hard and not give two shits about anyone else but he also has the strength and the malice to back it up
exactly my thoughts
He kind of reminds me of Robert Baratheon from GOT
@@mattnoonan1623 very accurate comparison because robert fights with hammer too like thor and that beer belly lol
There are people in the real world that train regularly or even daily that look similar. The image of a physically strong person we have nowadays is just kinda wrong.
@@xXSamir44Xx that’s because depiction of strength through out western art has this very idealized body image. If anyone look up the strongest people in the world at those strongman contest, you can see that they aren’t shaped like that. If we were to ask ancient Nordic to physically describe how they think Thor and the Gods would look like, it wouldn’t be unusual for them to depict them as big and chunk as it was well regarded even for most of history that weight relate to wealth and status.
Kratos seems calm and reasonable person, so he wouldn't kill Thor
Edit: he was
probably Jormungandr/World Serpent will if they'll follow the real myth/ side story in the game
Thor keep harrass. Kratos will
Kratos: *L3+R3*
They are following the mythos but with their own twist
@@dandyloona if that’s the truth then magni and modi should have never died
Thick Thor make more sense to me, and he looks like the Biggest Butchering Bastard in the Nine Realms as Mimir diescribed him.
Just wish they would have beefed his chest up some, not too massive but a little bigger
Yeah a total glutton who loves to eat, drink, kill
What makes "sens" what ever angle and style they want to make it. Its an interpretation. They way the made hades dsnt make "sense" to me. Still like it and makes "sense" to them so its fine.
@@saltykraken9471 Yup.
@@SirAsylus89 totally agree, he would make more sense with a little bit more pecs
Besides the red hair, Thor is also described as having fierce eyes and an enormous appetite (both from the Marriage of Thor story)... so yeah, it makes sense to me that a guy who can eat for a whole family's worth on a regular basis would be a sizeable chap around the midsection.
The best part of that whole story is how Loki managed to convince Thor to dress as a woman.
He also disguised himself as a woman, think he could pull that off with that look?
@@publiopaolacci495 With Loki's magic though.
@@varden3270 it is not stated anywhere in the saga that they used magic, could you find the exact quote
Only makes sense if Gods have the same bodily functions as humans.
There are myths that mention Thor's insane appetite that even other gods are surprised at, and he is also commonly accepted to be the physically strongest of all the gods. Strongmen are known for eating loads to build muscle with, and for being... Well.... Strong, the strongest among people in fact. It makes perfect sense for him to be built the way he is in GoW.
That's true he almost drank the entire ocean once. XD
Then he should've burst over drinking half the ocean since you're literally turning Thor into a human with your logic 🤣
@@TheInfamousWolf not really. I'm just saying, they're humanoid with the same bodies as ourselves, just immensely more powerful and magical. Some legends even show the gods dying, including Thor himself during Ragnarok. They are still visibly biologically similar to us when represented as humanoid, so it makes sense to depict the strongest of the Aesir as similar to the strongest humans.
@@TheInfamousWolf nope he just had a huge fuckin belly till he had to piss
@@hiddenstick420 that is canon now in my head.

Thanks to his subject being in pop culture for more than a decade, he’s fortunate to get some spotlight. Especially for being so young still.
Thor looks like a world's strongest man in GOW Ragnarok. He doesn't need to look like Chris Hemsworths Thor.
Santa Monica prefer accuracy over handsome version of Thor
@@MrBenedick14 They race swapped Angrboda, which is w.e, but no they do not prefer accuracy. They're telling their own interpretation of Norse Mythology.
@@MrBenedick14 Angrboda is black in this game. So they don't care that much about accuracy.
It's really ridiculous, why do they have to complained on this design and not to complain on Jack Kirby's, Stargate's or even The Sandman's Thor version that doesn't look exactly like the actual Norse Mythology counterpart back then?
@@azozazoz9196 Thats because they were never meant to look like the Myth. They were taking it an doing their own version.....
Thor may have well looked like Santa Monicas version sure but I'm sure SA's Hades did not look like that in GoW 3 and that's fine.
Thor looking like he could be a strongman competitor makes sense.
Right? Eddie Hall vibes

yeah but not a battle field in hand to hand combat
He sure is.
@@dreman901 he got mjolnir and superhuman strength. Why do you think he need hand do hand combat for? He is already strong af.
@@dreman901 Mofo wields a hammer for battle. Not sure he fits the general criteria of what a warrior in battle would look like.
And the biggest loser 😂 not a terrible design, just an interesting route to take with the character.
We'd absolutely love to hear his take on the entire video. It'll be nothing short of insightful.
There is, go back to last week and you will find an entire video on ign.
Why didn't they just post the entire video?
Or check out his youtube channel.... 😉
They can't. He'll just burst out laughing when they get to the Angrboda part and he won't be able to stop.
@Big Crunch Because Angrboda is one of the few characters we've actually gotten a description of (having reddish hair, the colour of dried blood, and a muscular physique), and Santa Monica just threw that description out of the window and straight into orbit for no real reason.
He is a warrior and a party lover so he's appearance is perfect
If super buff and super handsome Robert Baratheon could become a obese alcoholic in like 15 years as king then imagine what Thor could do with thousands of years of parties of insane proportions.
Thor looks like he's been eating all the Jotunns he's been slaying
This is so far, one of the best IGN-expert Collabs. Of course we want more episodes with Jackson Crawford! :D
@@AnnFranksAshes Bro...I'm with you on not (*insert color*)-washing historical/mythological figures, but you're overreacting to nothing here.
Imagine if it were a game set in an ancient african religion, and an expert went out of their way to say the gods should look Sub-Saharan African, when there were no source texts or anthropological evidence to support that specific statement, why would he go out of his way to say it? Even if you have something against specifically Angrboda's depiction, what he says in the video about Thor still isnt wrong, he's obviously depicted as being norse ethnicity in the game.

Thor fits the faded look of a forgotten kingdom, far removed from it's better days. It's only bad if this Thor is a pale reflection of a prime version. The Greek panthion were a vision of pristine God's in all their splendor; it fit the Kratos of that era.
Yea no one notice that this might be a older Thor after all of those adventures he gotten into
@@hisnotsolonely2961 which is why it would be an interesting story so to say. After centuries and even millennia of no real challenge, GoW Thor finally has someone that could actually kill him.

Really though, why even have Mjolnir? He could do way more damage throwing himself at Kratos
his fingers are thicker then atreus arms
He's got the mass, but he can get the hammer to higher velocity.
There's a great saga about Thor doing a bit of diplomatic feasting with the giants, part of which involves Thor leaving small craters in the ground with Mjolnir.
What happens if he uses that hammer to launch himself does he break the sound barrier
Classic take
Doc Crawford, a great educator in his field also author of many books . Thanks doc for all you give.
The red hair and beard as it is in norse myth proper is a plus for me. The gut... well, Thor is said to have a prodigious appetite. He was once tricked into drinking directly from the sea and lowered the sea level as a result.
it also caused so much drought
In several contemporary places, Tor is referred to as a redhead. The sources of the red hair are most often the Saga of the Floa people, the Saga of Olav Trygvasson, the Flatøy book and Eirik Raude's saga. However, these were written in the 13th century, well after the Christianization of Iceland. Thor was the symbol of the pagan faith against Christianity, and in all of the stories above, Thor was an opponent of the Christians. In this way, it may seem as if the red hair was a deliberate Christian addition. According to medieval paintings, Judas was red-haired. Thor's role was particularly clear in The Saga of the Floa People. There Thorgils called Tor with the hammer for the devil, so it may indicate that the hair color was deliberately chosen to emphasize this
Goodness gracious, what ? 😳

that would be a very long piss he would have to do....

Yes a reaction to the entire trailer would be amazing
Thor looks like a strong man; someone built to outperform anyone else in terms of strength in the world. That's a thick core he's rocking
No he doesnt
Marvel's thor is built to depict a today standard. Back in the day, before 20th century, having some belly was sinome of being fortunate and well nurtured.
Allegedly, in the actual Norse mythology, Thor drinks a lot, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he had a beer belly.
That's no Beer Belly here. That's a stomach and somewhere on it is a Head. Like a Snowman.
Well, according to one myth Thor is why there is a tide.
Utgard-Loki (a Jotunn lord) used magic to connect a drinking horn to the sea and make it taste like beer. Thor managed to drink so much that the sea shifted.
In the same story Thor almost managed to out wrestle Ella (the personification of old age) and lift Jormungandr.
Thanks Dr. Crawford for your insights
Now ask him about the design of Angrboða
haga
Well she is a shapeshifter so she can basically look like anything.
@@spartendeath Are you suggesting that what they showed us might not be her true form?
@@inferior3199 Angrboda: THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
He actually mentioned it in his trailer review. He said that he thinks it isn't neccessarily bad because on one hand, there are some viking age sagas describing people of colour and on the other hand, she's a Jötunn, an inhabitant of a different realm and thus it might not be that big of a stretch for her to look exotic by the standards of the norse.
Judging by Thor's appetite alone, I'd say it's no surprise he's got that belly.

Thor's also supposed to be kind of a glutton. So his physique is on point for me.

Yeah, and he has been described as a glutton as well. Didn't one of the spirits in the last game say that he ate through his family's entire winter store and when they begged him to spare some for them to keep he got angry and killed them all.
NO.
It also makes sense based off mythology, just ask Utgarda-Loki
False
If you really think about it, this rendition most likely coincides with the lifestyle that warriors in Norse Mythology lived. They fought, ate, and got drunk. This Thor depicts that.
But they also did activities all day long instead of sitting on their arse, so its really hard for someone to get so much belly when you are doing physical activities all day long. Now this could be an "older" Thor which would reflect more an older warrior that didnt do as much exercises anymore but still remain strong.
