I get what you mean. I think that paradoxically A Serbian Film is more implicating the horror. There are exceptions but the truly fucked scenes aren't as much "in your face" than this scene. You don't actually see THE thing that you absolutely do not want to see, but the editor & director know exactly which bits to show so that your mind can do the rest.
I've never been a big movie watcher, but this one actually made my neck hairs stand up the first time I saw it 40+ years ago. The only other movie that creeped me out since was "The Ring"

Man this movie still gives me nightmares and I'm 26 years old already when I first watched it as a kid I couldn't sleep without a damn light on I was 8 years old
In my opinion, the most disturbing and dark scene in the film. It would be explicit enough as an adult to self harm like this, but for a teenage girl to do this was incredible.
even when I learned some behind the scenes stuff? it's still very effective as a horror classic. BTW the lights iny apartment dimmed just now. I've got this creepy feeling, so...No more for tonight! lol
The demon that possesses her (Pazuzu) was the “Demon of the Winds” that’s why when Chris enters the room the wind is blowing the records & everything else against the wall.
This scene took place just after that friendly pain-in-the-ass cop, Kinderman got an autograph from Chris and left. If you remember, he was initially down at the bottom of those long stairs, and walked up them to the house. When he left, he likely retraced his steps, meaning by the time Chris hears the commotion upstairs, Kinderman should’ve already been through the driveway and on that path/pavement leading to the stairs…putting him outside Regan’s window on the sidewalk below at the top of those stairs (where Karras eventually leapt). How he didn’t notice all that flying stuff hitting the window, or Chris’ screaming, is amazing. He would’ve run back to the house, let himself in, run up the stairs and probably had a heart attack and crapped his pants in finding a bloody kid, head turned around backwards and talking in the voice/language of the recently-murdered Burke Dennings. He would’ve probably freaked out, pulled his revolver and shot the kid! If the demon had felt threatened from a gun pointed his way, he would’ve leapt from the bed and pounced on/killed Kinderman too. I like to think about what all was going through Kinderman’s head as the movie progressed. The book goes into it a bit and it’s eerie as can be. He knows something weird is going on in that house. Sick girl, a murdered individual with his head turned around backwards, which could only be done by someone with Greek at strength and the frequent visits to the house by a priest who was also a psychiatrist and had written about the occult, witchcraft, etc. Kinderman was probably scared shitless and didn’t wanna know what was up in that bedroom. I wouldn’t either. 😂
Damn, this movie was so brutal and metal for a horror flick from the early 70s. I’m surprised that the director wasn’t charged with obscenity at the time!
The neck cracking sound at 0:48-0:49 is just unbelievable. It was also genius to see the demons powers showing everything getting thrown around the room.
I was 12 in 1978 when i saw this in a theater in Texas (i guess it was in rerun) there was maybe 10 ppl there. This movie changed my life and scared the shit out of me. For months tryn to go to sleep i would always see her face or the demon face that had 1 second splice scenes(that is cut out of many versions today) im still sure i havnt seen the uncut version as i saw in 78. This movie intrigued me,scared me,fascinated me. Ive never been the same.
M7 Clandestine same dude! I avoid thinking about this movie because I know if it’s on my mind, I will envision the demons face when I’m in bed at night in the darkness or next to my bed.
In the thumbnail to this clip, Kinda Blair/Regan hadn’t reached full possession (no dead/grey skin, no white/yellow eyes, completely scary/sinister appearance). But look how unsettling and “off” they made her look with just covering up her eyebrows and slightly furrowing her brow to give her a “mean” look. Later on, full possession, I always that that eerie “no eyebrows” look was the scariest most unsettling part of her look. In the book, it says she was cutting her face with the crucifix, which accounted for the big gashes/scars you see on her face later, gross and infected and not really healing. Damn, this movie is so good. It was NOT messing around.
0:01.....The voice of the demon is interesting here. "Do it!!! You bitch! Do it, do it!!!!" I wonder if Reagan's mother is meant to hear that voice, or if its there only for our benefit as the viewer.
There will never be another horror movie like this. The modern horror film industry is a literal joke. These older movies had to rely on terrifying practical effects and real horror. Modern horror movies can just throw some cgi ghost jumpscare on the screen and people seriously call it "scary". It's sad and angering to see.
this is really disturbing to watch for anyone because its a little kid, but if you grew up in a strict Christian family it becomes pretty much indescribably horrifying. as a child praying every day, always going to Church, and talking about Jesus constantly made things like this extremely taxing on the psyche to process. imagery of God combined with any kind of vulgarity was SO FOREIGN to the mind it was NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED to be in the realm of possibility.
The Exorcist is to the horror movie genre what Taboo I and II are to the adult movie genre; pure perfection. They set the bar so high and pushed the envelope like no other movie that came after.
Pazuzu was a threat in the original and they wanted to make him the worst person you ever. In Beliver he is just a trickster that does child's play by flicking the lights and changing the bath water into mud.

Ellen Burstyn's ( the mother) screams were real after she hit the floor in that scene. They janked the harness she had on too hard and sent her flying to the floor, real pain , real screams..
Another fun fact: in the book before the mother comes to take away the crucifix, Karl (butler/help) first fights with the demon and gets knocked out. Right after Lt. Kinderman leaves you can hear Karl yell. If you stop the video at 0:41 seconds you can see Karl’s shoe at the side of the bed.

This doesn't seem like a movie for 13s and over....
Joey Diaz brought me here
Howlsengal same lol

I've never been a big movie watcher, but this one actually made my neck hairs stand up the first time I saw it 40+ years ago. The only other movie that creeped me out since was "The Ring"
Well then. That was, umm, interesting. How can I unsee it?
As a Catholic when I first saw this I couldn't believe it how they got away with it I'll never know
0:50 this face right here for me is the most terrifying. You don't see a little girl there, but an evil and malicious being. Those dead eyes, the sharp teeth, god the make-up is so good.
Dick Smith
Man this movie still gives me nightmares and I'm 26 years old already when I first watched it as a kid I couldn't sleep without a damn light on I was 8 years old
This is not a movie for 8 year olds.
Mercedes McCambridge did an amazing job with that demon voice. Sheeesh!
This and seeing Karras after falling down the stairs are the scenes that scared me the most from this film
In my opinion, the most disturbing and dark scene in the film. It would be explicit enough as an adult to self harm like this, but for a teenage girl to do this was incredible.
“Incredible”
I like the little bit of actual fear in Linda Blair's eyes when she realized she's really hurt
When? That was the Demon
Effective scene... even for a 70's flick...
Damn...........
Especially for a 70s flick.
First time I saw this movie, this was the scene that terrified me the most
🤔 I'm surprised this is on CZcams. 🎬 Classic movie.
The exorcist is the best horror movie of all time. Like if you agree
No its The Best Movie Of All Time
Jared Miller your movie tastes are ass then
Hereditary is easily better
The most horrifying scene in the movie imo
even when I learned some behind the scenes stuff? it's still very effective as a horror classic. BTW the lights iny apartment dimmed just now. I've got this creepy feeling, so...No more for tonight! lol
The demon that possesses her (Pazuzu) was the “Demon of the Winds” that’s why when Chris enters the room the wind is blowing the records & everything else against the wall.
Good catch mate, I never realized that. After doing research on the demon. 👍🏻 Interesting, because he does that through the movie. More in the end.
You're wrong
Not even ten years later, Tobe Hooper would film a very similar scene in Poltergeist
This scene will be on my front lawn for Halloween....
0:49-0:56 ... What every sane person is asking Gwenyth Paltrow’s father right now.
Gawd, in those last few seconds, chills ran down my spine.
Damn, this movie was so brutal and metal for a horror flick from the early 70s. I’m surprised that the director wasn’t charged with obscenity at the time!
the 'do it you bitch do it' still gets me
Linda Blair was robbed of an Oscar.
0:14 there's just something about her facial expression that shows that she knows she's possed and is terrified she looks genuinely horrified
The neck cracking sound at 0:48-0:49 is just unbelievable. It was also genius to see the demons powers showing everything getting thrown around the room.
It's my understanding that it was just a recording of a wallet crinkling, but damn is it effective!
This movie. Has something that scare the shit till this day
Pazuzu really knows how to party.
Lol
Ooooooo, this scene always brings chills down my spine

I can imagine what the audience was thinking and feeling about this scene when this came out in 1973
I am surprised this has not been removed.
They will never make a scene like that again you can guarantee it
I was 12 in 1978 when i saw this in a theater in Texas (i guess it was in rerun) there was maybe 10 ppl there.
12? What the hell was wrong with your parents man?
I was free range, when free range wasnt cool.
M7 Clandestine same dude! I avoid thinking about this movie because I know if it’s on my mind, I will envision the demons face when I’m in bed at night in the darkness or next to my bed.

Back then, the rating was R, and still R.
Maybe parents would take tier children.
Correct me if I'm wrong on tbe rating part.
@@conniedoesexist1807 wow.
The first (and only) time I watched this movie, this scene gave me an anxiety attack. It was so unexpected, so brutal, so YIKES.
It took me decades to build up courage to watch this scene a second time. It was the one that traumatized me the most.
0:31 the real scream
0:01.....The voice of the demon is interesting here. "Do it!!! You bitch! Do it, do it!!!!" I wonder if Reagan's mother is meant to hear that voice, or if its there only for our benefit as the viewer.
I imagine the demon wanted the mother to hear it.
There will never be another horror movie like this. The modern horror film industry is a literal joke. These older movies had to rely on terrifying practical effects and real horror. Modern horror movies can just throw some cgi ghost jumpscare on the screen and people seriously call it "scary". It's sad and angering to see.
Agreed
The Exorcist is the Most Scary Horror Movie Ever!!! This Scene is Pure EVIL❗👹
this is really disturbing to watch for anyone because its a little kid, but if you grew up in a strict Christian family it becomes pretty much indescribably horrifying. as a child praying every day, always going to Church, and talking about Jesus constantly made things like this extremely taxing on the psyche to process. imagery of God combined with any kind of vulgarity was SO FOREIGN to the mind it was NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED to be in the realm of possibility.
Are you kidding? This shit is hilarious. 😂
@@markdawn9756 for a Christian ,no ,it's extremely disturbing
The Exorcist is to the horror movie genre what Taboo I and II are to the adult movie genre; pure perfection. They set the bar so high and pushed the envelope like no other movie that came after.
Speaking of taboo, this scene alone broke several taboos simultaneously.
Pazuzu was a threat in the original and they wanted to make him the worst person you ever.
In Beliver he is just a trickster that does child's play by flicking the lights and changing the bath water into mud.
Ellen burstyn suffered longtime injury after the crew pulled the cable so hard in this scene
God a voice like that gives Freddy Nightmares
0:32 look how she hits her head on the wall. That's not how the stunt was supposed to go. The actress got hurt during that scene and the scream is real
She hurt her spine, not her head.
@@scottylewis8124 man, no wonder Ellen Burstyn if she watched the movie I guess she played Chris macneil and that's great she would have loved all the parts except got the scene where she got hurt she might hate William friedkin the director of film and novel.
The most disturbing scene from the movie
This scene was one that scared me very much as a child but even more frightening to me was when father Karras is having a dream of his mother standing on the other side of the train subway tracks and he's keep seeing that devil face flashing...
Ellen Burstyn's ( the mother) screams were real after she hit the floor in that scene. They janked the harness she had on too hard and sent her flying to the floor, real pain , real screams..
rhoads' girl reaction is real. Scream was looped.
This movie is still terrifying to this day
Ellen Burstyn hurt her spine while working on this scene when she got pushed and fell.
Imagine sheltered Christians seeing this in a theater in the 70s lmao
I bet every christian watches this
What is bad about this scene is Ellen Burstyn Injured her spine
I've watched this movie loads of times and have only now noticed the unconscious man beside the dresser as it's pulled towards Chris.
That's just a shoe.
That was Karl… in the novel Karl was already unconscious when Chris got into the room.
"never" that was creepy. I never noticed that piece of dialogue😳 what's really frightening is Chris's reaction to all this. Ellen is such a brilliant actress. Shes amazing. Of course everything is chilling. But its Chris expression, the demon mocking burks death. Horrible scene, yet brilliantly directed and acted. Smh...im here because of the new exorcist trailer, Ellen Burstyn is in the new movie as Chris again.
The most disturbing scene in the whole movie
The fact that if they made this scene today, everyone would have been cancelled lol
I doubt it, modern Hollywood would love it.
@@logicplague2077 Can you provide me an example of where a child masterbating and having her mother go down on her..or something of that nature, is in mainstream movies today?
@@ashleysmith1369 No, but there are MANY examples of Hollywood shitting on Christianity, it's the one religion that is fair game. As for the child stuff, well...we all know how they feel about that, too.
