Lyrics
One evening of late as I happened to stray
To the County Tipperary I straight took my way
To dig the potatoes and work by the day
For a farmer called Darby O'Leary.
I asked him how far we were bound for to go
The night being dark and the cold wind did blow
I was hungry and tired and my spirits were low
For I got neither whiskey nor water.
The dirty old miser he mounted his steed
To the Galbally mountains he rode in great speed
I followed behind 'til my poor feet did bleed
When we stopped when his old horse was weary.
When we came to his cottage I entered it first
It seemed like a kennel or a ruined old church
Says I to myself I am left in the lurch
In the house of old Darby O'Leary
I well recollect it was Michalmass night
To a hearty good supper he did me invite
A cup of sour milk that was more green than white
And it gave me the trotting disorder
The wet old potatoes would poison the cats
And the barn where my bed was was swarming with rats
The fleas would have frightened the fearless St. Pat
Who banished the snakes o'er the border.
He worked me by day and he worked me by night,
While he held an old candle to give me some light
I wished his potatoes would die of the blight
Or himself would go off with the fairies.
It was on this old miser I looked with a frown
When the straw was brought in for to make my shakedown
And I wished I had never seen him nor his town
Nor the sky above Darby O'Leary.
I've worked in Kilconnel, I've worked in Killmore
I worked in Knoockannie and Shamballamore
In Kalisanaker and Sollahed Moore with farmers so decent and cheery.
I've worked in Tipperary, the Rag and Ross Green
At the mount of Killfegal, the Bridge of Orleans
But such woeful starvation I never yet seen
As I got from old Darby O'Leary - Hudba
Great Song Sung Wonderfully by The late Ciaran Bourke 1935-88 one of his very best!🤗🧔🎙️🎸🎼🎼🎵🎶🥔🥔🥔🇮🇪
Been listening to the dubs all my life but never heard this tune before, and I’m an O’Leary
Indeed, this songs is a bit hidden and buried amongst all the others.
But, a cool story and I love it.
Perfect song, the kind I like - no nonsense, straight to the point and letting me know that I should never agree to work for Darby O'Leary.
Dedication to boss
I love the way he says potatoes haha
I have always always loved Barney McKennas banjo sound, very mystical.
Second best banjo man ever. My coalman better than him. He hung around with barney in howth for years. Fished with him on his boat
@@jimmymalone9139 Yeah?, he loved Howth didn't he?. Buried in Meath now i believe. I'm a Swords man
She was fond of getting me to sing "I met her in the garden where the praties grow" Old tune don't remember the words now... its been more than half a century since I last sang it

Πολυ συναισθημα!
Gah! How many songs have the same tune as Limerick Rake?! I've lost count now.
trying to learn this now and cant stop laughing at the verse about the cats and rats
Ah now after finding this channel I could not stop the playlist at all so great missed a whole lot of TV worth it...Thanks Go raibh maith agat
@Spartanhoplit : thats really good URL ... :) i stay in india..getting these type of songs in here is not easy...niways i'hav collected most of them...
I love the way he says any single word in this song. I love his voice and the way he raises it and lower it, how he bounces on some words... I love the story too, and it seems to me like he's telling, well singing, a serious story but laugh at the same time, though he's the "victim". I love the dubliners and I keep singing their songs I know. Thanks for sharing on youtube!
By the way, what is Michaelmas night? and who is Saint Pat? (well I guess he means Saint Patrick as in Saint Patrick's day, but who is Saint Patrick?)
TerraRockerHubsilon A saint from medieval times, alleged to have driven all the snakes from Ireland. As to what Michalmass night is, ive no clue.

Michael Kilroe Thanks
No problem. I figured the link was easier than writing an explanation of the day.
Depending on the area, potatoes were called praty or praties so through the mixing accents it came out pratatoes.... :) my mother was fond of saying praties
@Leary Hebert
Well praties. But do you know braxy ham? Ever heard? Or even eaten?
@markstief
Canadian Government is Darby O'leary, treating us Newfoundlanders in a similar way.
SIMILAR TUNE TO THE LIMERICK RAKE
It is. Pretty much same song diff lyrics
Love me shake down , we used have them back in the day ?
I was born not 4 miles from here. We knew it as "The Galbally Farmer"
Incidentally, lt's not "the mount of Kilfeacle", it's the moat. Anyway, thanks for posting. Memories!
Suddenly I feel less bad about my previous crappy jobs and employers...
Hi, it's from the album 'At it again'
@LordOfNumenor I wondered about it too :-) I know three (Limerick Rake, Champion and Keeping them Rolling and this one)... do you know more?
'Champion At Keeping Them Rolling' 'Cod Liver Oil' and 'Derby O'Leary'.
No mistaking Luke's lovely voice
Well, you've mistaken it because this is Ciaran Bourke singing.
@@dickidydoodah
True. It is not Luke.
Perhaps you need your ears tested?
The lyrics made more sense but lost a bit of their charm once I found out he was saying "potatoes" and not "predators"...
Anyone want to explain the line, “when the straw was brought in for to make me shake down”
putting down straw for him to sleep on
I want all the songs of The Dubliners..can anyone gimme a url ?
Mayukh Ranjan Das Idownloaded their Discography from Bit Che, with the BitTorrent Downloader App on my computer.
