Since 1962, The Dubliners have been enthralling audiences worldwide with their music and song. The strength and attractiveness of The Dubliners has always been in the personalities of the musicians who have made up this boisterous band of balladeers, from original members, Ronnie Drew, Barney McKenna, Luke Kelly, Ciarán Bourke, John Sheahan and Bob Lynch to the arrival at different stages of Jim McCann, Seán Cannon, Eamonn Campbell and finally the peerless Paddy Reilly.

I was born in England but my ancestors were Irish and left after the famine. I sang this song to a retirement community in Canberra Australia a couple of days ago and could not keep the tears back as I sang it. I noticed people in the audience also crying. It is such a sad song, and Paddy O’Reilly sings it so well. History contained some tragic situations. Let us hope that in this day and age we can all live in peace together. Unfortunately there is still so much tragedy and conflict in the world. May we all pray that this conflict is soon resolved.

As a Northern Irish man I love this music. I look deeper into this song and truly wish that everyone, not only on this island but beyond, that everyone can live as one, to live as human beings and love and respect every culture, race and creed. For our daughters and sons to follow to live with love and respect is all we can ever hope. I hope in my life time I shall see this happen.

    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
"Michael, they have taken you away
    For you stole Trevelyan's corn
So the young might see the morn
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay"
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity"
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
    By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived in hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry

I was born in Scotland after the Second World War. My mum and dad met through family friends after the war. My Dad joined the navy when he was sixteen … he wanted “ to,see the world” and of course he did, but then he found himself in this war. My Mum also joined the women’s movement that covered nurses etc. They met a year after the war, married and had me in 1948 in Glasgow, Scotland. At three years of age my Mum and I arrived in Melbourne Victoria Australia. Dad had arrived in Australia a year before to find a job and accommodation for his wee family. I was totally lost. My Grandmother had virtually bought me up with quite a lot of four uncles and two aunties. I have never wavered in my warmth and love for the Scottish and Irish people. Whilst I was young at the time, photos/happiness and the warmth of respective affection was always there. My husband and I toured Scotland and went onto Ireland. My Dad begged me not to go because of the unrest between the north and south. We arrived in Northern Ireland on the day of the truse. Wow it was unbelievable. We ventured on and travelled thru northern and Southern Ireland. Unbelievable how lucky were we and experience such history and also to meet with and befriend so many beautiful landscape and meet its people …. North and south. My deep affection … and of my Scottish accent that seems to erupt every now and then….. has warmed me to both the Scottish and the Irish. Our personalities are so similar .. live, love and be happy. That’s my motto. . Maureen Elizabeth. Short, Australia

      Covid is the SARS-CoV-2 Virus

Thank you for your sweet thoughts. I did actually go to Limerick (where Sir Terry Wogan (RIP) originated I believe). Stayed at Shannon for a while whilst a friend went to his Mother's funeral. He was champion of Irish dancing. Shannon and surrounding area such a beautiful place. Leaving Kent for Essex soon. So lonely around the Fields of Athenry or anywhere without Patrick. At least I am free thank God for that. God bless and thank you.

Born in Yorkshire (UK)1952. Lived in Australia for the past 48 years. Came across this guy a few weeks ago. Best voice I've ever heard. Listened to his earlier songs but I reckon his voice got better with age. I know he's a legend in Ireland but he also is in my opinion. Love the Irish music.

Friend, that is my dream also. To climb Croagh Patrick, kneel at the Mass Rock and at the site of the so silent visit of Our Lady of Knock.
Go to Dublin to Burdocks for fish and chips. Find some buttered eggs at a farmer's market. God loves the Irish people. He sent St Patrick to plant the faith so deep in the hearts of the people that 700 years of brutal persecution could not shake them.
      Long live Ireland!

This drives home just how hard life was then. This and the book White Cargo really give a feel for what was happening. Padraig O'Kelly used to sing this at local sessions and it always hit me right in the heart.

I have (had Irish parents, died in the last year), born and raised in London and emigrated when 42 with my family to Australia 17 years ago. So I think I can claim to Anglo/Irish/Austalian roots. I just love these Irish ballads that often encompass the Irish/English/Australian connections!

When I was in high school, my nickname was “Dropkick”. Because I always wore this Dropkick Murphys t-shirt. It had the lyrics “Low lie the fields of Athenry. Where once we watched the small free birds fly. Etc.” I used to shrug it off. Then I got in touch with my ancestry and realized I’m 30% Irish. I always feel like nothing really fits me or understands me. Then I listen to this and I’m home.

I have this tune running through my mind, day and night. The Dubliners with Paddy Reilly singing is my favorite version of the song. I'm American yet it brought me to tears at first hearing. Though I'm half Russian, and quarter Scottish and English by blood I know of the famine. Going back generations I know I've kin all through the Isles for I am involved in mankind. I've much blood on my hands from the Vietnam War yet I found peace and forgiveness through Christ Jesus. No other way could release my soul from hate and anger. I listen to Bloody Sunday often and my hands still shake, but my heart is stilled by hope and faith in God. I hope and pray that the Belfast Child sings again with unbounded joy. God bless you all😊
