What else do you want to know about basil? I want to do an advanced grow guide soon :)
Epic Gardening how save a herb when frost hits, is there any other way to winter it over.
Is there a way to prevent flowering? To keep it in a vegetative state?
Does the kind of water mater when propogating? I've had very mixed results
Hello. I planted seeds and this summer it has taken forever to get them taking off. I've got a 4 inch single plant, healthy, is it too soon to prune for growth in a bushy ball? The seeds are ,I cant explain why,but they teensy. Can I carefully dig them up in sections and transfer to my tomatoes. ?
Can you explain why the leaves droop please ...I repotted my plants and it did great for 2 more weeks ...I am in California so it’s does get pretty hot out... watering the same... drainage is good...Do they need a special fertilizer!🤔🤷🏻♀️...cant wait for your next video...thanks for sharing 😌💕
If my basil accidentally goes to seed pods. I like to cut off the seed stalks and put them in a glass bottle. I really pack it in then cover with red wine vinegar and put in a sunny window. After a few weeks or a month or two it tastes incredible. Great for mixing with olive oil and dipping bread 🥖 or in salad dressing or on fish. It’s a great way to use those seed pods. 😊
Dang that's a good idea! My first try with basil I will remember that.
That sounds amazing!
@@johnsheetz6639What does dang mean?
@@user-od1fo3lj4q kind of a nice way of saying damn!
@@user-od1fo3lj4qeasier way to say damn, you can also say darn
I plant Basil as companion plants to the tomatoes, and they grow amazingly fast. I spend an unbelievable amount of time just cutting them back to keep the size manageable. Basil is also great for repelling deer and other critters from the garden.
My is growing wonderfully with my tomatoes, especially since the tomato plants have gotten so large and shade the basil.

We have tons of deer come across our garden, looks like I'm planting more basil! Thanks a bunch!!!
Thats what I grow with along my tomatoes czcams.com/users/shortsaKYm-4Ec6oI
Wait really??? We have something eating our garden. We think it might be slugs or something though. I'll have to look into basil as a protective option
On your last live stream you gave me great advice on getting meyer lemons from a nursery instead of delivery. I am now the owner of a meyer lemon that already has 4 lemons growing. Just want to say thank you so much for saving me 60 bucks!
Glad to hear!
The hummingbirds LOVE the little flowers on basil. I always let some basil flower and go to seed. I seed harvest LOTS of plants. The basil flowers when the hummingbirds are migrating south in early September. My garden has dozens of flowers but when those tiny birds discover the basil they will taste every single tiny flower on the basil. Amazing to watch.
How beautiful to attract hummingbirds 💚 I’d love to see that. I’m in tropics of Oz and my flowers attract our native bees, love them too 💓
Do you happen to know how to harvest the seeds from cress?
We have humming birds all over rosemary and lavender
Ohhhhh glad to know that 💜💜
Good to know! Even more reason to love my hardy basil!
I grew basil in my kitchen all winter. First time! I figured it would die but it didn’t! I used to grow many herbs every summer but realized I only really used the basil. So last summer that’s all I grew (herb wise). I also grow Thai basil for pho. I’m binging your videos. 🙂
I've been using your (I believe you called it) bushing technique on my sweet basil and it's incredible how much I now have. I bought 2 small plants in May and I've filled multiple canning jars with dehydrated leaves. At this point I'm going to be giving it out for Christmas while still keeping a ton for myself.
So glad to hear!
I currently have over 15 basil plants and this is the first time I have had any success at planting basil! And now this video! Exactly what I need! Once again!
*Basil 🌱 is one of those herbs that everyone ✨ needs in their gardens, SERIOUSLY! Such 💚 an easy fun plant!*
Well said!
Agree! Super easy.
🤣 I started with 3 starts, ended with 1 tiny little thing. Mine seems a tad picky 😭
Same I have one in a fairly long but short (depth wise) planter box and it's nearly 2ft tall now!!
I have leaves that are 5in long and 4in wide!!
I don’t know why I can’t keep a basil plant alive 😢
I believe I have an African Blue Basil, totally love the pesto, I even use the soft tips of the young flowers.
Furthermore, you can make calming tea with the Basil, Lemon Grass and Mint with a dash of honey. Tip: do NOT drive after drinking the tea, you'll need a nap. 😊
What do you do with the basil flowers??
@@marlenekopp1480 , you can put the flowers in the tea. The honey makes the flower infused tea a pretty purple. :)
I have to thank you because I've learned so much from your channel! Ihave just started growing basil on my kitchen window sill. It was being sold at my local supermarket,In a part without any labels or indication of the type of Basil that was growing. Not only have your videos helped me take care and grow thiss herb I have also learnt so much about growing tomatoes but I'm going to have a massive crop :-) thank you Kevin!
Gardening has now become the second most recommended tab in my CZcams home page
This happened in 4 days
I love my basil plants. I enjoy pruning them and watching them bush up! Your video on pruning and propagation made a huge difference for me! Thank you!
I wanted to make sure I can back to this video and leave a comment. I know this video is older but I only saw it recently. Your tips were very helpful and my basil plant is now doing great! So thank you. Can’t wait to have a yard someday so I can try out some of the other techniques I’ve seen.
I need BASIL 🌿
Can this be a série with other herbs too? I need help with mint and parsley! 😁
Yup!
And coriander, pleeeez. Although parsley rules might apply to those as well🤔
@@anitaraab1561 Pretty please on the Coriander!!!!
Epic Gardening do mint. Or maybe Thyme.
I have some Vietnamese coriander aka Rau Ram (sorta looks like basil but without flowers). I'm wondering if the same pruning techniques are the same to make it bushy (mine is kind of leggy right now)
The timing for this video could not have been more perfect for me!! Thank you for the constant flow of quality information
You're so welcome!
Same! I have two little agonizing basil plants, one inside and one I’ve put outside wishing for it to get better. It did 🙂
I have never been able to keep a basil alive, so sad. These tips will surely help. Thx!
I searched your videos and couldn't find one about parsley or cilantro. I enjoy your presentation and personality. Please continue your work!
Hey, Kevin. Our basil game has been pretty weak but after watching this I’m looking forward to getting more advanced this season. So THANK YOU!
Currently growing sweet and genovese variety. Pruning the upper leaves for storage and seeing them bush after just a few days are so satisfying. Glad I learned something about growing herbs during lockdown.
I've had a herb catalog forever and was scared to order anything from it but accidently growing sunflowers and watching your channel is really making me want to try and grow more.
Have you grown anything yet? 🌿
I’ve been planting basil all over and letting about half of them flower to attract the pollinators. I’m intrigued by a basil that doesn’t lose flavor when it flowers! I’ll have to check that out.
My family just set up our first herb bed, so I'm very excited to watch your videos and learn!
I grew Thai basil last year and absolutely loved it! I couldn't get enough
Thanks Kev, This really helped me stop purchasing basil as I felt my spending had been going out of control. Now I grow my own basil and am happier than ever!
Babic22 This is true, I am his father and my wife (his mother) and I (his father) had to stage an intervention for him (my son).
I am growing my own vegetables 🥕 and Herb’s 🌿 this year , it’s cost effective and I know what’s in them , and all NON GMO ❗️
@@esterwyman im so proud, david (my father) and my mother (my mother) would be so proud of you. GO GMO!!!!!
I’ve been combining three reasons for cutting the basil this year with great success. When I want some for eating, I cut it in a way that maximizes bushing options on a leggy stem. Then I eat the lower leaves and root the rest of the stem in a windowsill for a couple of weeks before replanting it. At this point I’ve got way more basil than usual despite eating more *and* having problems with insects.
(Side note, when I’ve propagated lettuce-leaf basil, I’ve noticed the stem bends like an elbow so it’s just barely touching the water. So weird!)
lOVE THIS LINE OF THINKING!
Epic Gardening caps lock lol
I bought 5 different types of basil seeds. I'm moving to Austin, TX and excited about starting my own herb and vegetable garden. Thank you for the videos.
I'm so glad you corrected yourself about bayzil & erbs.
Got my first 2 plants ever about 2 months ago(tomato and basil) inspired by finding your channel. So this is tons of help!
I plant basil around the tomato plants to sacrifice to bugs instead of the tomato. Works great!
love learning everything you show us. I admit that my garden harvest is greatly because of your help! thats why we bought a sticker to help support you!
Thanks for your awareness of how we say it in the UK!
I live in the U.S., but I thought that was nice of him too☺
This is the first time I ever really felt like pursuing a sponsor. I want bougie new basil strains to up my cooking game!
I SO appreciate seeing the trimming and defoliation process on multiple types of basil. It really is a super fast grower. Idk it discouraged deer. That’s a bonus.
Thanks for this, I learned so much and you're right about it being a great beginner plant. I'm making my first garden this year and by far my best plant has been this basil (which I could never keep alive in my underground apartment and felt terrible!)
My husband was mortified when I trimmed him down a ton 2 weeks ago, but he just popped right back up! thanks for the tips about splitting growth on those thick stalks I was a bit confused.
I dont have enough basil to make a whole pesto, but now I know how to propogate another!
Same can be done for the chrysanthemums. Trim em down after frost. Uncover mulch during spring, Perennial growth!
5:05 this explained it well. More trimming to my young basil. Its about half bushel of leaf to leggy stems. Gonna trim ore often. Maybe more indirect since its potted outside and burnt on some leaves.
OMG thanks so much for the tips!! So usefull, I have two basil plants but I want to take it to the next level now!!
Congrats on the sponsorship. Hopefully they recognize your impact and well of knowledge as others are guessing... u have the science and experience.
But to be fair, the plant they sponsored was by far the saddest looking in this video. That´s not really how to promote a product is it?
I love to grow tons of basils and just learned a lot from your video. Thanks especially for the great closeups and explanations of pruning!
Those pruning tips were exactly what I needed. Thanks for all your awesome videos!
My absolute favorite is Mrs Burns Lemon Basil! Smells ahmaaazing and the bees LOVE the flowers. I plant them for the flowers and just to run my hands on them for the scent lol. This year I'm starting a new one for my husband who actually likes to eat basil.
Basil is a great plant to teach children about gardening. Thanks for another great video 😊
i got some thai basil with my lunch from a pho place. i took it home and planted it a few weeks ago and it's definitely happy after drooping a few days.
Glad to see this video on Basil. I cut some propagating stems and immediately put them in small tall glass jars. I use so much Basil when I cook and I put in salad raw, etc.
First time gardener. My garden is beautiful thanks to your tutorials and tips. Thank you!! 🥗
You are so welcome!
The African Basel is used in spiritual work for many issues and its very powerful !
So that's how you prune it for a bushier plant! on a whim i took store bought basil that has been chilling in the fridge for two weeks and threw the stem into a bottle of water. few days later, bam! Roots and new leaves. Damn these plants are amazing.
I just used basil in my lasagne tonight no regrets
we need to grow basil so he will no longer die in the blackspace
*bonk*
I love that you broke this up into chapters, thank you! Great video.
This was a great video! I love growing basil. Especially the purple variety. It's so delicious and I feel its much more potent too. All basil is ok in my book lol Thanks so much for sharing!
Perfect timing, Kevin! Thank you so much for this. Got regular Basil, & Thai Basil. The Thai Basil succumbed to a fungal disease I could not beat (tried H2O2 & repotting/fresh soil.) But! I did manage to get 3 pruned tips from it, before it croaked, and all three are rooted in & growing into healthy plants 🌱 Thanks again! Really appreciate your video & work! Cheers
Nice, you hvae a lot growing!
Epic Gardening I don’t have much space.. I’ve been doing a lot of containers this year & pop up tent greenhouses, but specializing in Indian Spice Plants! I’ve got a massive Cardamon plant growing, Fenugreek, Turmeric, Ginger, Coriander, & Cumin. Cumin has been really tough.. goddamm Fungus Gnats & plant lice infestation (just got some diatomaceous earth.. hoping that will help.)
My absolute favorite is lemon basil! I run it through my bullet blender with enough avocado oil to make a thick pesto-like spread. It's amazing on a tomato sandwich :-)
Thanks for the idea! I just started growing lemon this year and was not sure how to use it!
Lemon basil is delicious!!! We use it in soups!🙀
Perfect timing, I just stole a few basil cuttings from my campus community garden!
I thanks you for the close up on pruning!
You bet!
I noticed you forgot to mention this. With sweet basils especially, I'm unsure if other basil types are affected by this, if you don't keep up with pruning it, the taller it gets, the lower portions of the stems grow woody and begin to loose their leafs, often without ever growing back on those wooded areas. Basically they become an ugly tree thing. It doesn't kill the plant, just.. yeah, really, really ugly looking. I know because it happened to mine before I knew to be on top of the pruning. A small bit once a week is usually good, it just needs the top pruned to continue behaving.
I think all mint plans do that.
Once they get woody, do the leaves lose their flavour?
@@fsdx416they get woody when the flowers grow and that's the time the taste starts changing.
Haha.. that’s where I’m at. I wish I could include a picture with my comment.
I was a trigger-happy pruning beginner when I got my basils and oh man it's so satisfying to see these babies respond so well so pruning.
This is perfect timing! I just got a basil plant from the grocery store, now it is time to take it out of that teenie little nursery pot.
I trim/pinch the flowers growth and use it in my sauces. Not sure if they have less flavorer not. Your pruning tip is very helpful thank you for that!
Basil is great to grow , i love it in all types of meals and it grows great indoor and outdoors Great plant Keep it up man good video
Looks like pruning basil would be a tremendous additive to a compost pile. Great video!
First five seconds and I wanted to subscribe. Your vibe just felt so nice and I just instantly knew I was gonna actually learn something from this video.
Sold! Ordering some amazel basil now 😩
Recently decided to grow some basil. I look forward to topping and lst'ing this plant.
Thanks for sharing. I just started a indoor herb garden. This is so help.💕
Great timing for this video since it’s not too late to grow basil in July!
I grow basil and never had mold, mildew, or pests. I am growing thai, sweet, pure basil now. All doing great.
columnar basil is my favorite!!! ive bee a crappy plant daddy to him but he loved roughing it, i think... hes the most gorgeous little dude in my garden...
We bought some sad looking basil plants the local Walmart had in the produce section a couple of months ago. They are huge and happy now and so are we with caprese sliders we use the leaves to make them with.
I love that you matched your shirt with the episodes theme! 🌿 💚
Thank you! 😊
This is so cool i got Italian basil and the pruning would be a nice tip and online I checked if the basil would send roots if put in water and they said yes so we put it in and it did not work so I think I’ll try again I thing I did not give it enough light. Again thanks so much fir this video and it was very interesting!
Yes!! I would love one on mint!! I am hooked on these videos!
Thanks for this! Im having such a hard time keeping these alive this year. 8(
I really like the Greek tiny leaf basil as it grows year around where I live. Thanks.
My African basil is my star. But it's leaves and flowers are delicious, very flavourful.
thanks, Kevin! I'm gonna go take some cuttings to propagate my thai basil right now!!
Thank youuuuu I have some sweet basil growing. Perfect time!!
I love your advice. Just wondering if you grow all heirlooms to support the bees?
Super fan of you're videos. Explained very well.
Great video 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed
Hi there, although I am known for my green thumb, I could still learn from videos like yours. Thanks for the reference and I wish you success.
Great video! Do the leaves on the bottom need to be picked off (harvested) to avoid wilting or will they just keep getting bigger and bigger?
I got Amazel Basil this year and it’s doing fabulously. I live in Denver and the sun is so hot that my herbs usually bolt. It’s so lovely not to have to worry about that. :-)
That's great!
Really thorough comprehensive video. Much appreciated!
guys look it’s basil from omori
Yummy
Such a great informative video! Thanks!!
I planted sweet basil and I completely underestimated how easy it is to grow and now I have 30 I need to get rid of!
Pesto, lots of pesto.
Blend leaves in some olive oil, and put it in the freezer. It’ll last your until it’s basil season again :)

Easy??? 😓😓 I am a basil killer 😅😅 for some reason my basil always dies... I have tried several times and I can't keep it alive! Thanks for the tips,. I'll try again!
Keiry S. Try growing a different variety. I don't kill mine any more 🤭🤷❤️
Same, we try to grow and propagade store bought ones and it doesn't take long before they either start growing matted, or spotty, or leaves die off, or spider mites. Or all at once.
@@Sythgara Try different types of soil. Different locations, etc. When I lived in the north basil was never a hard herb to grow. Now I live in the south and it has been a challenge growing it. I had to experiment, soil, light, season, variety, etc...like we say in my country... Where there's a will, there's a way! Good luck! 🍀🙋❤️🙏
So I found that the basil plant will propagate just in reliably if cut below or above the node, so if you only have two nodes and you want to double your basil very quickly, you can chop just above the node. (That said if you add the node in it does seem to fruit a bit quicker.) What I will do is I will plant a small tray of seeds, allow them to grow out to where they have a couple nodes, chop them just above the nodes and dip each in a cloning powder or solution, and then add those to another tray of soil, and after 2 weeks I'll have 2 trays of rooted basil with much less time of having 2 trays sitting around. With this method, I have 2 trays for a couple weeks. I start my basil pretty early, so this gives me the ability to plant a ton of basil, but only starting one flat of it.
I typically do basil everywhere in my garden. Up front, in back, I have a full herb bed, and I put it all over in my vege beds. Fill in spaces, use it as a cover crop between plants. . I'll go through ionce a week and choo it back, saving what I need, then dropping the rest where it falls to compost.
basil will propagate when cut above and below the nodes! absolutely confirmed!
I started a bunch of basil outside before I had all the wisdom gained from this channel! 😆 When it starts to get cold, can I bring them inside to keep growing??
