    Great video on how to lub up correctly and making sure you clean off any excess lub. I like how he focusing on all the senstive parts and ensuring you lub them up in the right way. Not lubing up correctly can create friction and damage and too much lub is just as bad. I will never leave the house again without ensuring I have lubed up the right way. Also I like he explains all the different types of lubs you can use! Thanks!! I think I have become an experts in lubs!

    Most of the "maintenance" I've seen here is unnecessary unless the bike is exposed to a lot of rain. Most bicycle cables have a liner that makes the cable slide cleanly. Shimano SP41 or SP51 works very well and needs little or no maintenance. I have never seen any reason to lubricate the pivots on the derailleur either and I've had some of my bikes for 20 years. As for the chain, proper maintenance is important but dripping lubricant onto the chain is about the worst way to lube it. All of the drip-on lubes except some wax-based one will gather dirt and that makes more frequent maintenance and replacement expense necessary. The proper way to lubricate a chain is to remove the chain from the bike and clean it to the point where it's squeaky clean. For roadies, this will only be necessary once. For off-road cycling, the conditions will dictate when the chain must be cleaned. The absolute best lubricant is paraffin mixed with either a high quality motor oil or lamp oil. There are several videos on CZcams that describe the procedure. The chain is dipped into a hot paraffin/oil solution and you'll see bubbles that indicate that the lubricant is sinking into its deepest recesses. There will be a noticeable improvement in shifting. Usually, the lube will last about 300 miles though I think the 300 mile recommendation is conservative. Other claim longer intervals but I stay within the 300 mile interval. See this video for the best way to lube a chain: czcams.com/video/gF9nbwsaSHs/video.html

    Was a little apprehensive when buying this with the few negative reviews on here, but this was exactly the kind of bike I was looking for. czcams.com/users/postUgkxn_jUDSlprMIeubd9rHdEAnv59nKfjcKv I plan to ride it on paved roadways and trails, and wanted a "Grocery Getter" so to speak. After receiving it (without any damage), I had it out of the box, and fully assembled in about 30 minutes. I did not have to look at the manual, and I'm glad because I did look at it after I got it together, and it looks like it's a manual for several different styles. I did have to adjust the breaks and gear shifters, but that's been my experience with every bike I've owned. There was one review in particular that made me nervous, saying it was not meant for someone 6'4", it was too short. Well I'm 6'5" (230lbs) with a 36" inseam, and can tell you this bike fits perfectly, granted the seat is in it's highest safe position. I've only had it for 3 days so far, and if things change I will update my review, but I put 26 miles on it so far, and it rides like a dream. Very comfortable seating position. The front suspension is good for the occasional rock or bump you hit on asphalt, but this bike is not made to be taken off road, and I'm OK with that. I was particularly happy to see the wheels were trued perfectly. I was expecting to have to take them in and have them trued at a local bike shop, as I've had to do with all my past bike purchases, but in this case they were already in great shape. For the money, this is an awesome bike.

    Do I need to clean my bike with de-greaser first if it's greasy?

    • @MINERAL-115
      @MINERAL-115 Před 8 lety

      The degreaser (although in this video, he used WD40) removes the built-up dirt from the bicycle, as well as stripping off the majority of the previous lubricant. I'm far from an expert, but in my own experience the order has been degrease, scrub, dry, re-lubricate. It would make sense to clean it first, as you want the bike to be as clean as possible before adding in new lubricant - dirt attracts dirt, after all!

      @firmbutton6485 Před 6 lety

      No reason why not

    • @GaryHighFruit
      @GaryHighFruit Před 6 lety

      There are reasons. Oil isn't lube.
      "In the long run, it could pose certain problems.
      Engine oil is more viscous when compared chain lube. Thus it will attract dirt. Dirt accumulated will create abrasion which will wear out the chain.
      Engine oil could get greasy at lower temperature or might even solidify.
      Improper lubrication would lead to chain wear, jerky transmission and added friction.
      In the short run, using engine oil as chain lube might work but in the long run, this would seriously damage the chain."

    So the dudes at my local bike shop sold me WD40 saying it works just as well. In my personal experience after having used simple WD40 for months, I've had zero issues. But now I see all these things claiming it's a solvent, not a lube. If that's the case, why does it work so well? Why am I having zero problems, with the problems I previously had being instantly fixed by WD40?
    Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

    • @MINERAL-115
      @MINERAL-115 Před 8 lety

      Lifehacker did a pretty good "quick question" article* on WD40 a few years back - it still stands, although in the case of bike chains it attracts a fair bit more dirt and generates a lot more friction than a lubricant. WD40 is basically a cleaning solution that leaves a waterproof film; it does have some lubricating properties, although that dries out pretty quickly.
      You *can* use WD40 as a lubricant if hard pressed, but would need to re-apply it frequently and make sure everything is well cleaned to deal with the excess dirt. The additional friction also means you'll be wearing down your chain and sprockets much faster than if you were using a specialised lubricant (or even light machine oil).

      Bryce H it's a great lube if you want a clean chain , just means that it's not long lasting , water based ? Your having a laugh . All this BS on CZcams regarding cycling is just marketeers trying to make money ( fair enough ) chains stretch with use and no matter what lube anyone uses it won't stop that . Chains sprockets and teeth all will wear out with use . why there are so many chain oils all claiming to be this and that is beyond me lol . Wd40 , three in one oil is all anyone needs , clean with wd40 and for extra lube use three in one oil . grease bearings and oil for chains . Keep em clean and they will last .

    wd- 40 is a lubricant

    • @TomPolkampSound
      @TomPolkampSound Před 7 lety +6

      WD-40 isn't actually a true lubricant. WD stands for "water displacing" and its main use is as a solvent or rust dissolver.
      The lubricant-like properties of WD-40 come not from the substance itself, but from dissolving components. And the effect doesn't last.
      WD-40 can be a good substance to start with - it can help clean up rust or other grime. But depending on what you're working with, you should probably follow up WD-40 with use of a true lubricant such as one based on silicone, grease, Teflon, or graphite.
