The outtakes with puppets that are manned by 2 people are always amazing when each hand, and the head/mouth all react to the outtake in a natural way. Both puppeteers are just in such a rhythm with each other that they can easily go off script together.
Micheal Caine lists this role as one of his biggest accomplishments, and experts have given the movie a high rating for sticking to original story. I agree.
