Making a Mold for Soft Plastic Lures

  • So I needed a way to make my own type of top water frog the Tiki Toad made by Wave Worms. Although Wave Worms is still going strong and is a great lure company...they no longer produce the Tiki Toad, which in my personal opinion is the best 4" top water frog ever made. So I finally got around to making the mold to make my own for personal use!

      Do you remember if the cork anchor void when you did your first pour; if it was solid or a hollow piece of plastisol?

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      It was solid towards the baits but hollow at the top, I probably poured a bit too hot and didn't cap the spru hole with extra plastisol to fill the void. Also the spru is way too big for this but...first time. Good learning experience.

      Revamped Outdoors probably best to have a larger pour berth than too small and risk it going everywhere but the mold. Anyways nice job!

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      True, in some of my new stuff I have designed in smaller diameters and it leads to denting on larger lures because the plastisol loses heat too quick and sets up so the lure cavity cannot pull in new material quick enough from the spru column.

    Its very helpful to have your injector sitting in hot water warming up before you suck in the plastic. It makes a world of difference when injecting and it keeps the plastic from hardening too fast

      Water will make it pop, foam and can explode (steam). All additives to plastisol must be oil based. Scents, colorant, etc

      Revamped Outdoors Nice job 👍 they came out sweet. One tip that I found for saving mold material is making the container for the mold custom sized to fit whatever you are doing. You only need like a 1/4" of mold surrounding the item. The best material I have found is that corrugated plastic sign board from staples ( you know it looks like corrugated cardboard but plastic) cut it to exact specs. with a ruler and razor knife and tape it together with aluminum foil tape. You could have got away with using less then half of what you used. It saves money because that Aluma isn't cheap.

    Could you use plaster to make the mold, or would it be too brittle? I want to mold some lures but don’t have what your using. I was also thinking of just using 100% silicone from a caulk.

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  Před 4 lety +1

      I've tried plaster a few times it is pretty brittle for anything to make more than 1 or 2 baits. I have since switched to a hard silicone called mold max 60, I've been getting good results with it so far. You could always get a little less tough silicone and it would work too just have to be careful how much you clamp it together. If you're interested in bait making it might be worth it to check out some of my newer videos, I like to think they are much better than this one lol.

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  Před 2 lety

      Yup, definitely more shine than plaster not quite as miuch as polished Aluminum, I've tried using all of those types before what I've found is that spraying oil on the mold first seems to help. You could also try coating the inside in a high temp epoxy or fiberglass resin.

I have contacted some of the leaders in degradable plastics and have not had any reasonable responses. The companies do not even sell their plastic for home pour, I have tried multiple times to get companies to sell me their product to use in my molds but they refuse. They are worried about competition I suspect which is valid. I have seen home recipes but every one I try either is too hard or dissolves too quick to be anything more than one use.
      If anyone had recipes that hold up for more than 1 week in a hot tackle box I would love to try them out.
