Duran defence was awesome in this fight. Was able to use lead leg as an obstacle with bladed stance by closing off distance cutting down foot space for Leonard to get his combos off. He would square up on inside but only after stifling Leonard’s attacks. He also utilized the 1-2 effectively but in the 12 Leonard started to land some hellacious body shots on inside especially left liver shots. Amazing stuff by both legends

Ray was touted as the new Ali, American media did everything in their power to build him up as such. Howard and the boxing community helped Ray get the Title back, bribing an unprepared Duran to fight when he could not be ready and then telling the world Duran quit because Ray had him totally confused. Brainwashing at it's finest.

Here is another saying Cosell is calling this fight! Cosell's slow drawl is very distinctive, and anyone who ever actually heard him call a fight couldn't mistake it for someone else's.. Again, while Cosell introduced the fight, Bill Mazer and the "fight Dr." Ferdie Pacheco were the two calling the fight.

Durans speed is underrated. He was very fast and had good defense as well. But in this fight he demonstrated perfectly how to cut the ring. Boxing is all about the feet/legs and Duran was a master of to this. Also look at his body shots on Ray. Notice how he puts his hips into those punches. He hit him with lot of very hard shots. A lesser fighter might have folded in the late rounds but Ray kept fighting back. Ray just did not have the power of Duran. The amazing think is Duran was a lightweight moving up to fight the bigger man here.

After Duran left or vacated his title at Lightweight he moved up to Welter he was always the smaller fighter from that point on in every fight, including Sugar Ray. Can you upload the opening sequence to Season 5 of the PBS music program Austin City Limits from 1980? We open on a shot of the Austin, Texas skyline as the camera pulls away. Then, it shows a truck coming in and driving down the road, passing a house with "HOWDY" written on it, backing up the cattles, waving at a cowboy riding on a horse, a shot of a longhorn, man jumping out of the fence as a truck comes in, people getting in the back of a truck, woman laughs while a man drives, and the people sitting in the back of a truck with a dog next to it. In between the truck scenes, there's a man lifting a baby up in the air against the waters of Barton Springs, a shot of the green rolling hills, the Texas state capital, people at street fairs, armadillo races, and picturesque pleasures. We cut to a man laughing in the back of a truck, a shot of the truck driving down the road, woman smiling with her hair blowing, a shot of a landscape on a truck's window, camera pans up from the cactus to see a truck driving down the road, camera pans up from the water to see a truck driving through a bridge, truck getting splashed with water, woman and a man driving down the road, a shot of the road with the Austin skyline, back of the truck driving by as a guy waves his arm up in the air, camera pans to the left to see the Austin City Limits sign, and the camera zooming in on the Austin City Limits sign. Then, the Austin City Limits sign morphs into photographs of that evening's performance, whereas it zooms in to reveal the performance.🙂

Keep in mind Duran had just moved up to the welterweight division and fought one of the greats, Ray Leonard. Duran did not climb the welterweight ladder first - he fought the welterweight champion of the world directly! And Ray was no bum, man. The man was at his best and only 23yrs young. It was Ray Arcel who schooled Ray and taught Duran how to maul inside. And Ray fell for it instead of boxing outside. So if anyone was the underdog in this fight, it was Duran. Duran had some fights at welter before he faced Ray, the biggest one was against Carlos Palomino, Duran pitched a shutout in that fight, knocking Carlos down at one point. Ray had to fight Duran, as Ray says to Howard here, "I couldn't move, Duran was constantly in my face and I had to fight him, he was cutting off the ring". Truth is, Ray bought the Title back, throwing money at Duran and his corner, making Duran decide to fight when he could not be possibly ready for the fight and taking the money and hoping for a rematch (that he was promised). OR, he could pass up 8-10 million when Duran had only made 2 mill in Montreal vs Ray and settle for less money when Duran could be in proper condition. Duran was pressured by his own people and Don King to take the fight, being told there will be a 3rd fight, so to take the money and try to do his best. Ray started mocking Duran and Duran was completely insulted in Ray's behavior. So in Latino fashion, Duran didn't give Ray the satisfaction of winning. Ray says today, that he has never felt satisfied from that fight. Ray knows why, who would want to fight their biggest rival when they are not 100%? Ray did and he is not satisfied because of it.

@@blite13 sure he was a great fighter! But he was the one who crumbled like a cookie because ray wasnt going to play the mauling game in the second bout. He knew he couldnt hang in a,boxing match against SR. ray stayed in there and fought durans fight the first go around but duran gimped out when he knew he would have to fight on rays terms in the second. No matter how you slice it its all there and will forever be a stain on durans career but i will say he was one of the greats even with that classic gimp out routine.

@@averagejoe8839 as you totally ignore what happened prior to the fight. If you think the same version was at the 2nd fight as the 1st fight, you can't see. Ray has said multiple times that his strategy for the 2nd fight, was to get a less than 100% Duran into the ring. Now tell me, do you condone that? What kind of champ wants to fight his biggest rival when he isn't in condition to do so? Ray paid off Duran's corner and Don King, to get Roberto to sign for a fight he knew he could not be ready for. Ray threw most of his purse towards Duran to get him to sign for a fight he could not be ready for. Ray said himself, multiple times, that he didn't want to fight a top conditioned Duran. And you condone that, shameful.

@@MegaAlvarojavier Duran wrestled as much as he punched. He did this as a lightweight, a tactic he used to wear down opponents and get himself some rest in the middle and late rounds. Even as a lightweight, Roberto blew up between fights and had to starve himself to make weight. As ripped as he might have appeared, he would tire midway through fights . Watch his defenses against Viruet and Lampkin...fighters who took him into the late rounds. His stamina in these fights was questionable. In Leonard 1, Roberto wrestled and clinched so often, getting credit for dominating but Sugar Ray gave as good as he got in the punching department. Don't get me wrong, I love Duran and I think he's without a doubt the greatest lightweight of all time. His comeback victory over Moore and his victory over Barkley were wins for the ages but at his absolute peak as a fighter here, and with Leonard fighting the wrong type of fight, he probably deserved no better than a draw.
