    Interesting way to do it. I've been reading the comments and you have a few naysayers. What they dont seem to understand is not every engine is used everyday or needs to be at peak performance for effective use. Also many people don't have the funds to buy the "proper equipment " or to pay for a professional to do the work. As far as the comment about the runout of the valve preventing the valve from sealing which could be a problem, this will be confirmed either way when the valve is lapped.
    I personnaly am going to try this method on some valves i have just to see what kind of results I can get. If it doesn't work, I still have more valves. Nothing to lose.
    Right now I am trying to come up with a way to bore out the valve guides fo replacement. If I come up with something that works I may post a video on it. Thanks for sharing your method.

      There's certain operations that doesn't require nuclear tolerances, like this one. Be careful boring out the valve guide bores, that can ruin your whole day if they are off..

      Yeah, but your lathe is a precision machine, not some old wabbly, flexing, chatter causing drill press built from PVC pipe!!! ha ha ha

  • @jacquespoirier9071

    this can save an intake valve but not an exhaust one, grinding the valve face is a precision job, a patato shaped contact face will need so much lapping that the benefit of redressing the contact face will be completely cancelled.
    I can't recomment to follow that procedure for any other reason that bring an old clunker run, the price of the gaskets required to reassemble the heads offsets the cost of having these valves professionnally refaced.

    Interesting idea. But if the drill press isn't fastened perfectly level any tilt would have to be factored into the angle displayed on the finder.

    Good video im thinking of trying this, i ported my 2.8 heads with factory valve seat grind and were i squared by bowl's to the seat i got a spot in my seat a lil thin, I'm probably not even 40 thousands, i thought about grinding my seat a lil wider and letting the seat on the valve side come on out to the edge i little more to try and cheat it in a little, i know its not ideal but hopefully it seals better, i still have not checked to see if it even leaks yet but it's got me nervous, good video im an eastern KY boy! cats cats cats 🐈

    • @KentuckyColonel
      @KentuckyColonel  Před rokem

      I would check it real good first, just a few thousands can mess up your spring clearance and it will sit too high. If I am understanding what you're saying, you don't have much there to play with. But sinking the seat a very very very small amount might work but check it good first before you do it..

    I’ve asked this question on a number of different channels, and no one knows for sure - the questions is: did Ford on their 60’s and 70’s heads have the 3 angle valves and seats or were they all straight 45 degree valves and seats.

    • @KentuckyColonel
      @KentuckyColonel  Před 4 měsíci

      Good question... I would venture a guess it was a simple 45 degree cut and lap. To answer that question 100% I would try and find a head repair manual from the 1960's.

      Every old Ford FE and Windsor stock head I ever worked with were just one angle on the valve job. Even a freshly rebuilt set of D8OE heads off my 351W reman long block are one angle and it's all freshly re done.

  • @NilsJakobson
    @NilsJakobson Před 2 lety +1

    Funny how youre aiming at 46 degrees when there is a visible play in the vertical shaft that holds the chuck. You need to rebuild the drill press and tighten it all up before doing anything remotely precision with it.

    • @NilsJakobson
      @NilsJakobson Před 2 lety +5

      @@KentuckyColonelYeah I heard you saying that valve refacers are not precision machines. But that statement could not be further from truth. They are and they are expensive for a reason. You need to do some reading on engine rebuilding because your statement that 46 degrees is for the valve to be lapped in is wrong too. 46 degrees (or 44 degrees - depends how you look at it) are specified because of thermal expansion of the valve head. So both your statements are wrong. Actually almost everything you say in this video is wrong. Nobody should follow your example.

  • @stevecunningham3475
    @stevecunningham3475 Před rokem

    This is not the way to do it. Drills are not a precise machine and if you put a run out micrometer on this drill it will tell you all you need to know. Consentricity is very important and this would not work for diesel engines that are even less forgiving. Will it run ? It could but unturned under compressed fuel will create burned spark plugs and failed injectors and develope smoke from unturned fuel. Checking concentricity and also a leak down test will confirm the condition of the seat. Leaking valve is a predictable conclusion of untburned fuel and leading to multiple other issues including a bent connecting rod. Unburned fuel builds up and liquid does not compress leading to a bent rod.
