The sickest part? This was only SIX YEARS after Mullen debuted the (flatground) ollie. He needed only six years to design and perform all the pop-based tricks shown here, as well as plenty more not shown here. Nobody has ever contributed more to their sport than Rodney Mullen has to skateboarding. Not even close! *LEGEND!*
Lmao I thought that too. Back in that era most skaters would have agent orange, suicidal tendencies or misfits (etc etc) for their part. But i guess this show thought a recorder and stand up bass was more fitting.
At this point, calling Mullen "the world's greatest freestyle skater" was just an objective fact. There's a strong argument to be made that it's still true to this day.
What surprises me the most: why don’t today’s skaters have routines that look like this? Rodney’s style here looks closer to figure skating with all the spins. It’s actually very cool.
I'm pretty sure he meant don't take it so seriously that it makes you upset when you don't skate as well as you may want.. that's why he followed up by saying "have fun with it", kind of obvious.
@@shoga321 No one will ever be as good as Rodney, he had some sort of autism that made him obsessed with skateboarding. All these guys doing big stair sets, Rodney was capable but chose not to.
80s skateboarding was big on pads and safety, and I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. Even though I grew up street skating in the late 90s and early 2000s, and still don't wear pads when I skate. I think it's cool that modern guys like Andy Anderson aren't too worried about what others think to represent helmets and safety. Let's face it; taking care of your body will allow you to skate longer, progress further, and have fun longer.
This has given skate boarding a completely different vibe than I have ever felt from it. I grew up skating, for years and playing Tony hawk.. this felt so wrong
Yeah flatland stuff has pretty much gone extinct with everything being about big air now. I love this stuff though, I find it more fun to watch and it's extremely creative

"360" guy at the end of the set. More like a 3600! Rodney should be an inspiration. He truly loves skating. Money was never his ultimate goal.
Haha, that trick is called '360s', he even one wheeled at the end.
Dude, Rodney is also a physicist .. he LOVES math!
It was 11 times. He did a 3960 😂
Hahahahahahahhaa!
@@SkyDarmos what? He's not a physicist!? You need to go back and re-google that...his MOM was a physicist NOT rodney

lmao killing it even with the least skate part sounding music they could possibly find
They literally put "circus trick" music lol. Disrespecting the legend smh haha.

💀 💀💀
@@erikchristiansen1457 Well you can tell it must have been some 80's kids show.
That song fucking rules!!!!!!!!
the most important skater... period
“Rip it up Rodney” could have been the toy of the millennia

We are so lucky all this footage was recorded. Legend at work!

It's freestyle skateboarding, most people do street skating or vert
"Don't take it too seriously'' says the guy practicing 18 hours a day 7 days a week.

Single wheel 360's at that!! Watching footage of Rodney skate at all different stages in his life is always good for the soul!!!
When you really love doing something just for fun you could do it all the time and you wouldnt even notice how much time you are spending.
I think I need more Dr. Fad.
phew crazy how precise and consistent that was
This deserves some more views.
Rodney s ollie impossibles were the best! So much pop to them. 1988 might have been the greatest time to be alive.
I would say text book impossibles but he did invent it. They were looking good in any days standard.
These people don’t understand how great he really is with those half hearted cheers lol
At the time the flat ground ollie was the crowd pleaser. Crazy.
To be fair that was a huge ollie, especially on that board.
@@mrjohnnyk everyone is like, "how??"
ikr
If you slow it down you'll notice that giant ollie was actually a grab.
So much innovation in such a short time. What a god
This kid looks like he has potential, if he sticks with it he could be huge one day
Lmao
Looks easy. I could do that
This dude I known as the godfather of skateboarding
🤦♂️
I don't know he's smart and mentioned the knees go first he'll never be anythibf
I know Rodney threw alot of trophies out I hope he kept the golden gizmo award🏅
The progenitor of modern skateboarding
Don't be rude
It's not even a fishboard it's literally just a piece of wood with wheels. Absolute maestro
I had this dr fad vhs video as a kid. First time I saw Rodney was from this vhs tape way back in the 90s
Rodney is a top tier human!
Rodney is the rock of skateboarding.
Rodney spun like 12 times and the guy says, "360!"
I think Rodney was trying not to laugh when the guy said that lol
Well, in his defence, I'm sure he was just referring to the 360 degree motion. And it's a kid show, so everything is kind of dumbed down.
Rodney, top performance as ever. rest of that late 80's show: scary as hell.
Rodney was busting out some 70s era skate moves while mixing in his own tricks.
Very impressive.
Still next level skating
@1:35 killer late finger flip airwalk
Woah 360!!!!!!!!
Rodney Mullen vs Daewon Song = greatest skate video ever
An era when an ollie would get a round of applause
I mean, dude had a helluva ollie on a board with no nose, that's STILL impressive.
I think do an ollie using a modern board is much more easier...
@@HankSFC yeah coz he invented the modern board/deck..
Rodney is just the best
why all the genius are so humble? love you rodney
Damn I been skating all these years without kneepads, been dong it wrong!
The sad irony is that Rodney's knees are completely messed up now.

"Woah yeah, 360"
On demand what a legend!
“Rip it up Rodney!”
Let's put it on a t-shirt.
Someone should use that as a DJ drop
I was just about 1 year old when this was aired.
respect ! I was a bad skater , back in the days.. i still have marks on my knees !!
Very long 360 at the end! The hugest 360... Gotta learn this kind of 360s! You do not see this kind of 360s every day.
Lol, I can do 10+
on one wheel ..
The place and soundtrack are surreal lol
I love the background music.
HE IS RIDICULOUS !!! The best!!
Anos 80 tinham os programas de TV mais bizarros! E foi a melhor época da VIDA 😃
"They love you Rodney" cut to scowling girl in guns n roses shirt
Love his dark slides
y'all saw those perfect impossibles he was just casually throwing down...
1st try like nothing. The legend!
Classic skater music
Those finger flips!

incredible as always
Def one of the greatist skaters of all time
A whole video part on a live tv presentation
And this is the reason why I’m not in fire when i heard “Rodney Mullen”.
1:13 Every time I see this I have to rewind again and again. Just insane footwork.
Pretty much everyone of those tricks they can do down 15 steps now going 15 miles an hour.
Mullen was/is a true pioneer
You must have stopped watching skateboarding then 10 years ago

I got shunned once for playing similar music at a ramp session.

“360!”
