      Raul, I appreciate you watching, and I am glad you found the material useful to enhance your DStar experience. Now that you have your hotspot up and running, you will have the world of reflectors at your fingertips. If you search for some of my other videos, you can even learn how to store special link commands like linking to XRF, DCS, and XLX reflectors around the world. You can even link your hotspot to individual DStar repeaters as well. Right before your comment posted, I connected to W0CMD repeater in Missouri and checked into a local net! I encourage you to learn all you can about DStar. It is a fantastic mode!. If you ever have questions, feel free to email me at cq2meters@yahoo.com and I will always reply. As to the teacher profession, the closest to that is my mother was a teacher! Maybe some of it rubbed off. Thanks for watching and your comments! 73 de K9WLW.

      Thank you, Chris. Is your callsign, registered for DStar? A lot of operators are blocked from getting into the Reflectors because there are small errors in their DStar registration online here in the US. Another common error is some operators accidentally enter a space before their callsign in the Mycall section on the radio. Either of those issues will prevent you from being heard.

      Yes, I recommend using DR mode on Openspots despite the Openspot manual encouraging you to use DV simplex. The good news is the Openspot hotspots do not care which RPT1 module you use. I have my pi-star loaded as K9WLW B, my Openspot 2 as K9WLW D, and my Openspot 3 as K9WLW C. Very good. The good thing about the OpenSpot is it does not care which letter you use in the 8th character of your callsign. The only letter you cannot use is the letter G since that is the R2 callsign module. You can even make the R1 callsign a Z in the eighth character and the Openspot will work with no adjustment to the hotspot needed. In the case of pi-star hotspots, you have to pick a letter for BOTH the R1 callsign and the hotspot dashboard and they must match. Currently my pi-star is K9WLW B, my Openspot 2 is K9WLW D, and my Openspot 3 is K9WLW C. They all 3 work perfectly on DStar.

      Thank you. I frequently get questions from hams that are having hotspot problems, unable to get in the network. In over 90 percent of the issues, I start by checking the 4 eight digit DStar pieces of information stored in the radio. My call, RPT1, RPT2, and URCALL. All the characters have to be perfect or no entry to the network. It's a tricky bugger to get right without guidance. Believe me, it crushed me in the beginning! One ham had it perfect except he had a single space before his Mycall. And could not get into the network.

    I just received a station setup, ID-51a, Openspot 1 and a TP-Link Wifi Cube. Was having issues and to simplify I put the Openspot direct into my home router. When I go to save my Openspot as a repeater like you do at about 5:20, I only have 1/3 pages (Yours has 5 pages) for the menu and I do not have "Type: DV Repeater", my first spot is "Name". Your radio has a gold stripe below the screen, mine is silver, so I am thinking yours could be a Plus model? The "Type" option being missing is a bit confusing, just trying to track down my issue connecting. Thanks and 73, Jeremy N8YP

      I believe some of the older model ID-51s do NOT have the first menu option of DV Repeater. That is ok. If your radio does not, just look for the next step. Depending how old your radio is, it may or may not have reflector options built in to the To Select menu. If you run into a brick wall trying to find the reflector link options, reach out to me at cq2meters@yahoo.com and let me know. I can show you a workaround.

It will be my first experience with any kind of hotspot whatsoever and I"m really looking forward to playing with it, so I've been checking out videos (like yours) in preparation. I have two HT's, the Icom ID 51a and a Yaesu ft-70, so thanks to your video at least I'm set with the Icom and D-star. And actually I do have one question about that. I watched your other video and saw how you changed reflectors using the radio by changing what's in the To spot, although a few other videos I've seen show that in the openspot configuration software you designate the reflector you want to connect with. So can you use the software OR the radio? If you want to use the radio does it matter what reflector you designate in the software? thanks!

    • @k9wlwradio309
      @k9wlwradio309  Před 4 lety

      On the newer radios it is easy. Quickly tap the up rocker switch where the button says RX-CS. That highlights the TO field. Them hit the center key (the diamond key in the center. This takes you to the To Select menu. It has choices that appear in the following order: Local CQ, Gateway CQ, Your Call Sign, Reflector, RX history, TX History, Direct Input (UR), and Direct Input (RPT). Select Reflector and hit enter, then select Use Reflector. IF your radio does NOT have Reflector in its menu, then you MUST manually create that command in the Your Call Sign Section. You can learn how to do it there by watching another video on this channel called "Lightning Quick DStar QSY command storage in the ID 51. Many older model DStar radios require the methods I describe there.

      Are any of the repeaters that have skip next to them in any band that is NOT in 70cm band? For example if they are 1200 MHZ or 2 meter repeaters, the radio cannot use those memories because the radio only has 70 cm band. If that is the case, they are useless memories for that radio. If they ARE 70cm repeaters that is another matter I will check into and report back in a few minutes.

    • @k9wlwradio309
      @k9wlwradio309  Před 4 lety

      I just realized if they have a skip in them you cannot load them in the from field. If the call sone has an A after it it is 23 cm repeater and not usable from this radio. If they have a C after the callsign, then they are a 2 meter repeater and therefore also unusable from this radio.Uf the callsign of the repeater has a B after it, then it would be a 70 cm repeater. If THAT is the case, highlight the repeater with your cursor and quick press the quick/menu button on lower right of radio.a popup menu should appear on screen with the SKIP option. Highlight that and hit the enter key. Let me know if that works!
