#Nintendo #Sony #Microsoft - Hry
The problem with an all-digital future isn't the disappearance of physical media itself. It's the uncertainty of having everything digital disappear at the most ridiculous whims of companies and their licensing agreements or revoking your "entitlement" to whatever digital content you have at any time they see fit, whether you get it legally or not. This is the exact reason why physical media is so important, so is preservation and to a certain extent, piracy too.
That's very minor, the much bigger problem is when games are all streamed since you cannot pirate video without game logic, at that stage it's not even owning a game, it's just like playing games at an arcade and just renting time on a game server, where your internet connection speeds will explain how well the picture and sound is rendered.
No one will own games and like it especially now that the logic all happens on the server and so making it much harder to hack and cheat in multiplayer games. It will be almost impossible for preservation without hacking the server farms hosting the games to retrieve the game content.
@@alexprach Oh yeah, totally. It's definitively every single videogame company wet dream. No thank you, I don't want any part on that.
As of late, the only physical media that makes sense for the long run are large physical storages with enough redundancy. Since Disks, roms, cartridges, flash storage will and can degrade over a long period of time. So in the end, the best viable way to preserve games is to back them up and emulate the systems.
@@Deliveredmean42That's horrifying!🥶
Is there any way we could prevent disks, ROMS, cartridges, and flash storage from degrading?
Also, DRM can go suck a dick or cock!
@@alexprach Bingo. This is exactly what I'm worried about. This is where I draw the line.
I have a friend that can’t afford games and I love being able to loan games to him that I really enjoyed. I also have friends we all trade games with. I’ll definitely miss that part of the experience.
That is a shame to lose that
So dramatic…boo hoo your friend can’t PLAY a game, sounds like to me he needs to prioritize getting a career or even just a job bagging groceries. Drama queens everywhere

@@Mycarisloose haha calm down there Willy. You might consider taking some internet breaks from time to time. My apologies for offending you for saying I enjoy giving, and seeing my friends enjoy gaming.
I have enough of a backlog to last me to my death. I'm good with bowing out of gaming.
Same, I have like over 80 physical games I can play on my switch alone. That's not counting all my 3ds games or all the 200+ digital games I have between my PS5 and Switch.
the funny thing is the people who will be like "you say that now but what about that one compelling game that comes out, huh?" Like I'm already buying fewer and fewer new games every year, it's only a matter of time before I basically "bow out" that way
Agreed! I don't need a console that is practically a pc that only plays digital games.... seems so pointless
Blu ray is trending up with younger people oddly. As they want true 4K or fact that these companies just randomly remove movies and shows.
I'm broke. I get my games from the library. No physical media equals no more gaming for me if we get to that. Bye bye videogames at that point.

Steam games are just as expensive
Sadly the price will not drop. it is all about them Greed that they can't bloody take with them in the afterlife or when they die. Like wtf is wrong with them? To much greed will end up killing the market or your families.
Prices won't drop. It takes more money and more time. Even if they could fix their creative processes, they charge you for what they believe it's with to you.
@@pmgf911 Steam has sales so frequently it is almost ridiculous, so a bit redundant there
PC went all digital first because retailers did not want to sell PC games anymore. Part of the rise of Steam was because it was easier to get a PC game on Steam than it was on store shelves. That was back when PC gaming was "dying" and going digital helped save it.
PC was a rare case where Digital was necessary to save gaming. though I would recommend GOG over Steam just because of ownership issues, and you can still find games compatible with windows 7 there that you can actually play on windows 7.
basically, GOG won't force you to upgrade your OS if you don't want to.
Exactly. Whereas console games going all digital seem to just be following a trend (and/of) cost saving.
Nah, PC went digital because they need to mitigate piracy, pirated copies are free LMFAO. Ooh and almost everyone is not buying a full price game on PC LMFAO unless it's a banging game.
Those lovely Big Boxes though, all lined up along the shelf, they were legendary.
PC games were also cheaper digitally quite often.....I wont be buying digital console games as they have shown their hand by taking our stuff away (by removing store fronts) and also not support legacy games from older consoles. Big fat NOPE from me
My backlog is far and above big enough for me to just skip out on an “all digital future”. I’m specifically in their 20s demographic they shoot for with games purchases, and I’m all good just waiting it out until people get annoyed with it and discs come back if they ever leave. Everyone was saying DVD was where physical films were going to die, but my 4k blu rays look far better than digital services provide and don’t take up any space on my drives. It’s just not something humans tend to want to give up.
My only issue with digital distribution is the lack of consumer protection.
The digital license that is being sold to the consumer must be recognized as an item that is owned by the consumer, because you are selling it to me, not renting it.
The seller still retains ownership of the base product which I understand, but the fact that they have the right to remove the licence that I BOUGHT from my library does not sit right with me.
And when has 'Microsoft' removed game purchases 🤔
I agree
@@mikeuk666 I dunno but I do know some PS5 owners had there whole digital license deleted off Sonys servers and also I know a guy who got his account banned for they usual COD lobby banter and can’t play or download his games from the PSN store.
One thing that would allow me to accept 100% digital with all games/consoles is to allow the consumer to freely "copy" the digital files and back them up myself. Don't think this will ever happen for several obvious reasons.
That's why I try to buy more these days from GOG.
Or if you could play that copy on any platform. Won’t happen though
That model exists. There are quite a few shops like that - most notably GOG and itch. Some publishers release their games like that as well, my favourites are Aldorlea.
However, seeing that most big companies explicitly don't publish their games there for that reason, has to tell you what the publishers want to be the future of game distribution.
Sony just got right to make the physical media fir Disney, so they are not going digital
I dont see Nintendo leaving physical any time soon
This is why I still collect for current Nintendo but I dropped out of PS and Xbox this gen
This ladies and gentlemen is one of the big reasons why I’m sticking with Nintendo because they’re not gonna get rid of physical media like Sony and Microsoft. I love that Nintendo doesn’t do what Microsoft and Sony does and it kind of makes them stand out.
just not many good non kiddy games for nintendo that run the game at worthwhile settings
@@johndoe-dj3iyNintendo first party games are the best in the industry so it doesn't really matter.
@@johndoe-dj3iy Nintendo being for kids is an outdated notion since games like Bayonetta 3 is on Switch. It’s Sony that censors their games not Nintendo 😂😂😂
I think the difference between PC and console is the amount of control. I can buy a game legally on steam, copy it to another drive, download an altered exe and that game is mine for life, no need to log in online, I can mod and changed it as much as I want. On console you are at the mercy of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo who can remove all your games if they choose to. Heck even if Microsoft started messing with Windows we have Linux to fall back on.
PC is open platform vs console is closed platform
For real though this push towards digital-only is making PC gaming ever more appealing. The whole point of consoles is ease of use, but issues like licensing expiration and DRM are effectively erasing that benefit.
Hey! Are you the one modding those sexy Claire Red field and sexy Jill Valentine RE games?
as as drm and licensing sucks. They have little affect on a console's ease of use.
@@undercoverduck I expect PC gaming to benefit from the full digitization of software for the reasons you mentioned and more. That's exactly where I'm finding myself in this...I'll enjoy a massive backlog and physical collection or I'll invest in a gaming PC but what I won't do is follow around Sony and Microsoft. Sad that it's come to this but these companies need to respect the customers that have buttered their bread for generations or many of us will just ditch them.
As consoles get rid of disc drives I wonder if having an SD card slot on most of them would allow game devs to release "physical edition" SD/micro SDs with their games on them as production costs keep going down and write speeds get better. Imagine getting something like Elden Ring on an SD card for your PC/Steam Deck and other console versions if they had SD cards.
No need for this console if you already have a series x, save your money everyone
True that
Well duh....

Sell your console and get a pc
I want cartridges or discs with playable games on my consoles.
At this rate I could just as well stick only with my SteamDeck and play everything on there.
Steamdeck at least being a PC allows you to play disc backups with emulators, drm free games, allows for other storefronts, or other ways to get games and software on it.
Sticking with Nintendo go forward even if they go digital because they still do the fundamentals better than both Sony and Microsoft and put gameplay first as well as their games been fun and accessible for all skill levels.
I'll say it until I don't have to- the day everything is all-digital is the day I stop buying new games. Not like I don't already have a backlog to last the rest of my life or anything.
I never played Alan Wake 2. If the game ain't on a shelf, I ain't playing.
Everyone's talking all digital future but storage just isn't there for gaming
It's expensive for a 2tb nvme drive and that holds like 8 games
Deleting and redownloading is a quick way to destroy a drive
Paying $3 for a 512gb storage device to phhsically hold the game permanently seems like a smarter idea to me
Who sells 512 GB drives for $3?
they are going to need more than 2tb of storage because the large game sizes
Rent. Complete. Move on
Imagine thinking games are still running directly from the disc
@@mikeuk666 No.
Reason Nvidia (and others) are looking into that issue.
Nvidia's current attempt is the RTX I/O tech where it's using GPU's to accelerate decompression and load times; Meaning they will compress game file sizes down even more without any of the usual cons like longer load times, slower asset loading, etc.
I doubt it because they'll want to sell that overpriced proprietary storage of theirs
I always look at an all digital future as a negative because look at
Wii shop channel
Wii u e shop
3ds e shop
PSP PSN store
What do all these have in common they’ve all been shut down. And the 360 store is literally 4 months away from being shut down.
Not to mention 1000s of games from those stores being lost forever or being delisted.
Yes but it’s evolving into unique accounts through different generations of consoles, even Nintendo confirmed it will do it with its switch library, and all digital means less plastic, less production pollution, less transportation pollution etc. not everything is bad we can always download and save ours SDDs
Then jailbreak a console and play those games.
That’s two examples of Sony and Nintendo being absolutely shit lol. In Xbox I’m still playing stuff I got digitally over 14 years ago. Even after the 360 shop I’ll be able to do that, Sony and Nintendo fucked up big time
@@ladymctavish3299jailbreaking an hardware console that's not in production for several years to a decade is not serious advice for preserving older games.
It's not a digital issue. It's a DRM issue. If hardware and software were DRM free you could create your own physical media
@spawn wave .the problem with digital is it crashes, it gets corrupted and many other things, you have companies removing your digital library or trying not to let you claim the game or anything you own digital whenever they want. We seen it with the crunchyroll, the discovery and many other companies causing theses problems and people and the younger generations have been realizing this more and more and trying to go to physical media. Physical media is still need just in case something goes wrong with the digital in general. Physical media is a backup to counter against anything the digital media.
The real issue isn't digital vs physical. The real issue is DRM vs DRM-free. If you buy digital games from GOG, because those games are DRM-free, you can download the offline installers, back them up as much as you want, and you can install and play those games while offline. Physical will only last so long because physical media will eventually rot, so digital and making multiple backups is the way to preserve games. So, if you really want to preserve games, then you should buy DRM-free games.

China has created a disc that can hold 1 million gigabits and is capable of mass manufacturing similar to dvds. I doubt the gaming industry will use it though.
I don’t think physical disc is an issue.. Researchers from China just discovered how to do a 200tb dvd-like disc not so long ago so we could see this in a couple of year in console or other stuff..

I'm already having issues with the all digital future with my Series S. I don't want to spend MSRP on digital games. I keep seeing games on my wish list consistently sell for less as physical media. Once I can't shop sales at Target, Amazon, or Gamestop, these game companies are going to jack up their online prices and there won't be anywhere else to go.
If I do buy new consoles moving forward I’ll just wait for them to be jailbroken I like supporting games but if I can’t get a disk or cart I’m waiting for a big sale .
Dude, this shouldn't even be an issue. Just because games can get more graphically advanced doesn't mean they should. We reached the peak of desired graphics like last gen; why the hell do games have to look hyper-realistic? Do you guys wanna play games, or fkn simulators?

Video games should look and play like video games. It's gone too far now with realistic graphics and sims. Nintendo is the only games company that knows how to make video games.

It's just corporate greed.
Maybe if the games were good, they would also sell even more, making more money.

Don't be surprised if we actually go back to disc's. A new disk has been created that would allow you to store a petabyte on it so if that takes off that could be the future of physical disc gaming. How do you say you care about owning things and yet don't care about physical media? For consoles which are close platforms, unlike PCs, physical media is a absolutely necessary.
Digital runs into issues with music licensing also. MGS 3 Snake Eater got hit with a licensing issue causing it to be taken off the PS and XBOX stores. Physical can’t be taken away. Also, if they don’t have to pay for the physical card of disc, then digital games should be cheaper then physical to reflect that.

You say Nintendo raising the price of a physical game like PlayStation won’t charge you the same for a digital game? I thought digital games were supposed to lower the cost for the consumer, yet prices are going up.
They are technically more expensive now, at least for the AAA titles but if you account for inflation, it isn't. However because of physical releases still, box stores don't want it to be cheaper online since they are also trying to sell the inventory they've ordered.
Also like mentioned in the video, games are taking longer and longer to make, not to mention bigger and bigger teams. They've gone overboard for graphics so that increases the costs tremendously for little overall return.
If Xbox makes a handheld it's not going to accept physical media

if the all digital future works much like how Steam and GOG work on PC everything will be just fine. The problem I think is every company who is in the console space has found a way to screw it up one way or another. So there is certainly going to be a lack of trust with Xbox, Sony and Nintendo until we can get digital libraries that act like their PC counterparts.
If it goes digital I have plenty to play. I don't think Nintendo will go all digital. Once the industry realizes people want physical games it will turn around
Keep blu-ray with multi-layer options. Have the TV-connected console link to the handheld such that the handheld can download and play whatever disc is in the console. Easy.
Environment impact is a thing. We need less physical garbage..
Also, immediately receiving a game you want to play, as well as making them available everywhere (sometimes without import tax) is a godsend to some.
And finally, the more digital, the easier it all is to pirate and copy.
People should not be worried about "this" future. They should dread the day ALL games are online only.

I have a router which has WiFi 6 and set my frequency to 5Ghz and whenever I play games via cloud, if it wasn't for the fact I knew I was cloud gaming, I would have thought I was playing games natively on hardware.
@@cummywummiez Where have your comments gone?
I've been preparing for the digital future by buying all the physical games that interest me. I have a back log of 1100 games that I'll start to dig into. I can't wait to play Chrono Trigger and Castlevania symphony of the night for the first time. I have so many great games that I missed out on from my youth.
Remember the way PC games were packaged back in the 90s? In those 12"x8"x2" boxes? Brings those back packaged with a full color manual, cloth map, badges, pins, all those cool extras and sell it for $100 as the Premium Collectors Edition; that's one way physical copies can survive for 2-3 more gen. Or just download the standard version for $50-70.
I would argue that nobody wants 100+gigabyte games.

@@Chris-Holmes. we don’t need 4 in the collection that would probably get it below 100 gigs 👍😆
@@sandman8920 lol good one. I would actually be ok with that I mainly play 3 and odst
@@Chris-Holmes. nobody likes 4. 🤪
I WANT ONE!!!!!!!
With your name, that’s no surprise.
@makasete30 right lmao. It's literally just a redbox to rent games at home. Until they remove them from servers like the hundreds of games you can't even play anymore unless you habe a disc.
@@pennywisethedancingclown7139 you guys act like Nintendo won't and doesn't do the same stuff. Nintendo is literally the worst when it comes to game preservation.
@XBX1MASTER Absolutely! Nintendo is the main culprit on this. I'm one of the few here on this channel that doesn't even own a Switch. Zero desire after playing Witcher 3 on one lol. The hardware is complete shit. Ain't paying $60 for games on such limited hardware.
@@pennywisethedancingclown7139 Name 20 games Xbox have taken from peoples libraries.
The Series S resale value will plummet even more when the Digital X comes out. Maybe MS will discontinue the S.
