  • In this video I follow on from my earlier test of the Skydio where I really put the motion tracking and obstacle avoidance through the ringer.
    In this video I check out cable cam, Dronie, Rocket, Hover & Fixed Track skills of the Skydio.

    thank you it is perfect example!!!

    Impressive obstacle avoidance. I assumed the drones could only avoid objects in the camera's field of view (getting bigger but not moving toward the edge of the field of view) but the Skydio avoided trees that were not in the camera's view.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, this is the Skydio's "Party trick". It actually has a total of 7 cameras on it. 1 main one at the front, but then 3 more on the top and 3 more on the bottom, so these cameras build a real-time 360 view of it's surroundings for obstacle avoidance.

    Superb analysis...I agree. I will be looking at buying this drone for use with my 2003 Gold Wing to take footage in the beautiful roads in rural Ontario. I will probably wait until the Mavic 3 comes out to see if they incorporate this AI in it before purchase though. I was rather surprised that it will track the bike at what appears to be quite a fast pace...
    In the meantime, I plan to stay with my current Mavic Zoom and Air until DJI's release likely next year. But that footage you got is BRILLIANT and just what you need for your application. Ride safe.....

    I have seen other videos where the Skydio 2 will lock onto another person in the area and follow them even though it is being controlled by the Beacon. Interesting theory on why the Fixed track position on the screen doesn't match where the drone is. If that's true it makes no sense to have it that way as you then have to carry a compass with you to know how to set the drone. Even with it's problems it's an amazing drone. And careful on trees without leaves, it doesn't play well with small branches.

    Hello! Thanks for your reviews. I just watched your first part and now this part 2. Looking forward to part 3...
    I ordered my Skydio 2 back in August. August 18, 2020. It was delivered December 18, 2020. I was impressed with the turnaround time. When did you order yours? And when was it delivered? I remember one of the biggest complaints was the time it took to order it and have it delivered. Apparently some people waited 6 months or more and many cancelled their orders.
    I ordered the same kit as you, the Pro kit with everything.
    Anyway, I'm still getting used to it coming from more manual controlled drones from Yuneec. While I won't be getting rid of my Yuneec Typhoon H Plus anytime the Skydio 2 will serve as a nice alternative.
    The Skydio definitely has a niche. It has some quirks. While agree the controller isn't much to write home about it serves its purpose. I did get mine out to about a half mile with no break up. I actually like the gimbal paddle versus the horizontal wheels so many other controllers have.
    I also noticed the same thing you did on Part 1 where the first flight was very shaky. But then after that it was locked on.
    I have been playing around with the audio recording sync feature too. You have to use the app to create a clip and then download it to the phone for the audio to be saved.
    I'm pretty bloody impressed if you ask me. I have much more to experiment with.
    I love the image quality!
    I look forward to future videos from you.

      Hey Airwolf, thanks for our comment. I ordered my drone around Oct/Nov. The lead times have come down a lot, last time I checked their site they were claiming 45 days. The Typhoon is a great drone, with the Skydio, you have all scenarios covered.
      Have you been able to get audio synch working if you use the beacon? I've had it working when I've used teh app directly but can't seem to get it to work with phone + beacon.

I’ve learnt , if you fly like a DJI, you never crash!!!!!!, I should get all those incredible shots on tracking you just can’t get using a DJI, unless you’re a perfect pilot, and that’s only 1%👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺

    Any feedback available on how well Skydio detects telephone lines? Filming on mountain roads in Taiwan is a nightmare with DJI drones, because of the telephone & power lines that randomly zig zag across the roads.

      @brentbat  Před 3 lety

      Hey Cyber Editing.... Skydio do warn about wires and thin branches. I know there have been a few people who have posted crashes on overhead power lines. I can't say I was prepared to test the drone that hard. If I see them, I tap the height button so that the drone shoots above them.

    I did I run similar to you using the gps controller in position or fixed tracking mode around 25-30 mph and it hit a tree and luckily landed on grass with no damage but it didn’t give me a lot of confidence. What I did was notice the tree and pushed the remote to move the drone behind me before reaching the tree and it was to late and collided with a branch that would have or should have easily avoided. Still learning.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  Před 3 lety

      Hey Norsman, I'm assuming the tree was small or had very fine and hard to see branches... is this correct? Or was it a "normal tree" in which case it shouldn't collide no matter what you did.

      @norsmanadventures Před 3 lety

      @@brentbat the branch was big enough and had many leaves on it as well. I’m wondering if my input on the controller and the speed we where going didn’t allow it enough time to compute through all that and then take evasive action. I should just trust it to do it’s job... hard to do.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  Před 3 lety

    Great review. I have been dreaming of something like this since 2015, and hope there will have been many improvements by the time I do my bucket list bike trip across Australia. Why did you not demonstrate the orbit feature? I would like to see more automated functions on the beacon.
    My best friend and I did a bike tour around Iceland in 2015. I searched desperately for a compact, auto tracking drone to bring along but all of the promising ones were still on kickstarter. while editing hours and hours of gopro footage of heart stopping mountain switchbacks and spectacular lava fields, I would have killed for a drone orbit, or dronie, or especially a spiral dronie that moves out as it orbits then zooms back in. These would need to be autonomously triggered from a moving bike with gloves on. A tall order. How about voice command? Come on Skydio 3 we are counting on you!

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Greg, I didn't test the orbit feature in this video, but I have used it extensively since then. The beacon is pretty good, and you can access many of the preset skills from it, although it works best in conjunction with the phone App. The phone app gives you the preview and access to more of the complicated functionality, but the beacon lets you adjust on the fly while you are riding. Iceland eh? on my bucket list for sure. I'm loving the Skydio 2, but agree, it can only get better and better. But this is an awesome drone... check out my Idaho ride, tons of drone footage on there.

  • @Nerb1
    @Nerb1 Před 3 lety

    Nice.
    Im not really clear on why the dji is better for manual cinematic shots... is it just smoother?

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  Před 3 lety +2

      Three reasons I think the DJI is better for manually flown shots.
      1) It uses Optisync as opposed to wifi for transmitting controls and screen information, so the camera image is just smoother on the DJI than Skydio.
      2) The quality of the controller is nicer on the DJI
      3) The range is much greater on the DJI.
      But in my mind... for the shots I want to make, the autonomous obstacle avoidance still trumps all of that.

  • @kalboadventuresretiredinth6431

    Hi Brent, looking to order my Skydio now. Curious what 'options' you would recommend I order with this drone - their website shows three different buying options. I also have a Mini2 to use for manual drone video, I will use the Skydio primarily following me on a motorcycle. Thanks for any feedback.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  Před 2 lety

      I would go for the "Sports Kit" and then just buy some 3rd party ND filters. If you need the hard case, then Pelican cases make the same case that comes in the cinema kit. I found that I don't use the manual remote control at all, but now I'm sliding the slimmer case into the back of my Klim Backpack when I travel. You may also want to buy a 3rd party handlebar mount for the beacon. Enjoy.
