- Tactics in Football Manager 2024 is built around player roles, and this is the 6th in a series of videos explaining the different roles that you could choose for your players as you deploy them on the pitch. This one looks at your central midfielders, featuring the central midfielder, ball winning midfielder, deep lying, advanced and roaming playmaker, mezzala, carrilero, box to box midfielder, and how you can combine them to create the tactic you want to see on the field!

What a channel, so much new information that is not available no where else. Keep it up
A great video yet again. Was looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint!
One of the most informative FM channels I've come across to date. Genuinely helpful and useful information/explanations 👍
Best so far and I've seen them all .Thanks mate you actually make sense and I learn a lot keep it up your on a winner.
This is a real quality, I am more than happy to came along your channel. Your videos helped me a lot, it seems to me that I am enjoying the game more than ever. I just won Seria A with Sassuolo in 4th season.
nice!! I'm very happy to have you aboard and congrats on the win!
What a class video, I go back to your "older" videos so many times to rewatch an episode. And then I'm usually like "Aaah, that's what he meant"! Can't wait for the next video! Learning a lot from this as I'm applying this to my own tactics. Amazing job dude!
:D I'm delighted that you're finding 'em useful
The videos you are making are absolutely top level 👏👏👏
11:12 you can also fix that with cm(su) that moves into channels, also you can ask the wide player sit narrow or both. Enjoying this vid also, again veteran fm player here.
Bro I am so grateful to have found your channel! I've been looking for something like this for ages.
Basically I know what all the roles in Football Manager do, but with your entertaining way of explaining things you still give a completely different insight.
I hope the channel grows quickly, you deserve it and that you have fun with it for a long time!
Greetings from Germany 👏
herzlich wilkommen und vielen dank, herr weltraumkapitän! thank you so much for that :)
Thanks for another great vid! As a new player and new fan of soccer in general……making me google “what are half-spaces and channels” taught me a lot as a side note😂
Thank you so much for these guides. Please keep these in-depth style up, totally love it. Much CZcams content today is hastened and fast. The concept you present is way more interesting and better. Subscribed
Glad you like them, welcome aboard :D
so lucky your channel showed up to my dashboard, very helpful and approachable
Would love to see a series of you playing a team showing us how you set up and analyse your squad
Neat idea! Though do you think a quick squad analysis and setup of multiple teams would work better rather than a focus on one team?
@avgdad6024 anything you do atm seems to be gold just keep it coming
@@theavgdad hi just subscribed nice video. Will see other videos., analisys of Benfica and tactic creation.. Cheers
@@theavgdad we want both :)
OMG thank you, u are my hero I have been looking forward to this one soo much
You're welcome!
This is awesome, gracias!
SIXTH!
Keep up the solid work, bro. Some good stuff here, even for more advanced players.
as always, thank you so much :)
Great job, thank you.
I just bought and started playing FM24 a few months ago. I have no idea how to play so I've just been delegating almost everything to my staff and have only built tactics I've seen on youtube but because of you I can now understand and make my own tactics.
Thank you!
Yes, mate! Welcome to the rabbit hole :D
Your vids are so good DUDE !
I love your videos, keep em coming pls. As someone who watches a lot of football for many years I am surprisingly awful in understanding movement patterns of player roles.
to be fair it's so hard to pick up good tactical info off the TV - you see such a limited picture of the field, and so many cuts and replays and such!
Thank you brother.
Your videos have made so much more sense than others. Played the game for years and I feel like each video teaches me something new. Would love to see some examples of play in videos, although that would extend the length and some are long anyway. Long but informative and well worth it.
So I wish I'd commented after watching the whole video after you showed the match engine !! My bad. Amazing video.
@@adamfieldhouse1 hahaha I know, I ought to show more ME regardless
As someone relatively new to fm, these are the types of videos I’ve been looking for to really understand the game. Great content 🤝
Thank you, glad it's hitting the spot!
Love the videos man, they're so informative, i had a request, can you make videos around tactics revolving individual specific roles that are normally hard to incorporate in a tactic, for example - the ramdeueter, or a trequetista
Maybe i can help u a bit with 3 roles/tactics just from my own experience. Its not scientifical tested but i made it into the championsleague and rank 2 in the bundesliga with FC Augsburg so it kinda works :D
1. Trequartista: The trequartista is like a crossover between an inside forward and an inversive winger if played on the flanks. so u can use him best in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3. In a 4-3-3 i pair him up with a cariliero. Since the Trequartista wont do anything defensivly the CAR is his back up and maybe one of the best midfield rolds, combining the defensive duties of a BWM with the Passing of a CM/DLP. And when the Trequartista cuts inside the CAR gonna move outwards so u gonna see A LOT of 1-2 passes between them both. If u play him in the Center u should pair him up with pressing forward or an BWM behind him. If use one i put him on the flank where he hasnt that much opposition against him because usually trequartistas are small and agile guys that struggle against 2-3 6ft center backs^^
2. Raumdeuter is like a poacher on the flank so someone whos gonna wait for spaces (Räume). So u need a striker that gonna create those spaces. I only tried him few times but i had the best results with in a 4-3-3 with a F9 in the center and a winger on the other side. U can use him also in a 4-2-3-1 much like a trequartista but tbh the Raumdeuter is the only role i never managed to get good results from.
3. Outside Forward: Is ideal if u are playing with a Target forward in the lower league and then maybe wonna recycle ur, now outclassed, TF into another role. Its best used in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-2-4 high gegenpress style. Set him on support with any kind of striker close by and, ideally, a segundo volante on attack. if he is playing on the right side, give the wingback on the left side the order to hit early flanks onto the outside forward. In ur build up the outside forward gonn work like a less dribbling inside forward on support but much harder to defend for the opponent wingback/fullback. on the attack the outside forward gonna cut inside looking for a header from the far post. So ideally u play with a winger on the other side who can do those Flanks. Also u gonna scora alot, and i mean, A LOT of goals from set pieces cause usually TF´s or outside fowards have the same phyical attributas as ur usual 6,4ft centerbacks but with much better heading.
Hope that was helpful :)
@@tombkingsethbattlechannel9419 thanks a lot man this was very informative, definitely will try some of these role combinations, carrileiro and treqautista especially sounds like a great combo
Had to subscribe, great videos.
Welcome aboard! :)
usually dont comment on videos, BUT your content is gold for FM. Keep up the great work 👍
I very much appreciate it, thank you!!
Loved it! Specially because you talk about links and combinations with different stratas (CM's with Wingers and with FW's). That's cool! Keep it going mate!
Glad you enjoyed it!! :D
First again! Awesome, thanks
Yoo 33:21 at , the assist that made it 1:1 , that’s my name !! A. Oluwabori! I’ve never seen my name in an FM game before 😂 that’s so cool !!!
you've got a bloody good cross on ya, mate :P
High decisions --> less instructions
Great video, great channel! Can I suggest to put some bookmarks on your video? Let's say I want to see Carrilero highlights, I would like to go directly there
I'll try my best! YT promises me it'll do so automatically, but apparently it's a big 'ol liar. I'll try from my next one onward!
As a fellow Darlington manager, spellman is a good choice signing 👍
Platt was my DM Hatfield on cm(a) and liddle on b2b. Hatfield also was a SS for a bit. Liddle was the player who stayed relevant the longest.
Max Thompson was a good striker on a free at the beginning, much better than curry, Nelson or hazel. But he's probably taken by now.
Rivers was my RW of choice first 2 seasons.
When you get to L2 get adramola on loan LB and is a great little wb(a) along with khayon Edwards upfront👍
Now let's actually watch the video 😂
hahaha I like how my midfield is like a single counterclock rotation of yours! Hatfield is amazing. I actually did get Thompson season 1 and he was crap compared to Nelson and didn't wanna renew. I like Nelson anyway. His smile!! Hadley was super awesome for me, 21 assists from WBa or IWBs and 10 goals too. Bugger didn't wanna resign though. Adramola and Edwards, will remember that :)
@@theavgdad Hadley....you mean Ben Hedley? He was great for me as a iwb. He's what led to Hatfield going to shadow striker as he just sured up midfield.
Took over around October 15th....with 6pts dead last. Came 2nd on the final day dropping from 1st. Thankfully won playoffs. Since then back to back 1st places and unbeaten in L2 last season.
Currently suffering doubts over my choice to sign a 33yo who's great except speed as a new cmA.... He will probably do fine but 4.5kpw is alot on 1 player🤣
Great vid as always!! I want to ask something. You only talked about the links with the wingers but what about other roles? For example an AP on the right wing. Is WB-A AP-SU and CM-A a good combo? And what cm role do you suggest with an IF in a 4 3 3 ?
Because of the wb-a, you need a bit of defensive solidity. A CM-A would be forward as well in attack. I would personally go for a more central midfielder, like the cm-s (or even defend) or car, so it could also cover for your attacking wingback.
True although in a table-topping team you can pull it off and let a DM sweep things up behind - plus the supporting AP should do some defensive work.
Oh, and for the IF, I'd use a support duty CM if it's a IFa, just to give the IF the space to shine. Something like a BBM, a playmaker, or even just a good old CMs
Just discovered your channel today and woah! I was looking for something because my team isn't doing bad in my Arsenal save but something isnt quite clicking for me. Anyways, great job mate. I had a couple questions, is a double IWBs setup feasible with say Mezs, DMd, APa and if it'll make the the picture clearer what i have going up top is IFa, AFa and IWs ? I was looking to create more of a Pochesque 2-3-5 style where the midfield is overloaded with the wide defenders coming in. After watching your vid my initial thoughts are to make these tweaks to allow for more holding players who can link play in our def and mid. Hence on the left IWBs, CMs and IFs. DMd. On the right FBs(with stay narrower but run wide with ball), APa and IWs. Thoughts? Going back to tweaking, thanks for the vid!
I like it, but I feel like you might struggle a bit to create chances due to congestion? I'd personally have at least one out of the four (fullbacks and wingers) being a naturally wide role, just to try and spread the pitch a bit. The Mez will give width, but it may still crunch space too much to make the volume of chances you want
Great channel mate. If using a Mezzala Attack on one side of a 4-3-3, which winger role would you recommend pairing with the Mezzala, between an IW & IF?
They both will stay wider than usual when they plays with a mezzala thanks to the new positional play changes so both can work but if you want to use a mezzala as a supportive role I’d go with IF due to role’s direct nature. Mez(a) is most offensive role you can use in a cm slot so they both on a same side can be overkill. However Mez(a) can work nicely with IW(s)
What @berkeutgin9563 said! Worth noting that IFs is still super offensive, so an IWs with more risky passes on might be a great combo with a MEZa since he'll look to slip the guy through more while also being ready to cross from the half space
What about the combination of Mezzela with Advanced playmaker on the wing (inwerting inside) or an inverted winger. I imagine the mezella overlapping from wide side of the winger in this system. Would you use this combination and if so in attack or support duty? Thank you again for a great video!
yeah, this sort of combo works really nicely for sure, and I personally love a MEZa bombing past the APs. IW works as well, but he likes to cross, so an APs or IFs might work better with a MEZa if that's a main move you want to see - but if the IW has good vision and passing, or you throw risky passes on him, it'll work fine
In general to reduce distance between all roles i can swap a 433 flexible tactic in a 433 fluid tactic?
Use mezzala (s) + cm (a) can be too much offensive? In your opinion in a 433 best combo for out midfield?
for sure, fluid basically means everyone in the team is closer in terms of mentality so that'll keep them closer in distance too! TBH I in a 433 I like to have one of each of the duties if possible, but roles definitely depend on what's around them. I currently play CMa, CMs and DMd, but often change that to BBM, CAR and DLP if I'm tweaking other stuff - like deploying an IWBa means I change that CMs to CAR to hold the flank a bit.
Hey what are your thoughts on a 3-man midfield, however you have two DMs who are Segundo Vol on attack on the left and a BWM on def in the middle, and a RPM on the right hand side of the centremid?
RPM
VOL BWM
Woah, that's interesting! What's around them? TBH I like it, and it can absolutely work as long as you're able to press defensive areas effectively. It's a deep three though, feels like it needs to be a generally lower block
@@theavgdadThank you for your reply and advice!! I play a 433, SK on attack, BPD, CD. On the left is a winger on support with a fullback on attack, the right has inverted forward on attack with a wingback on support and for the striker Advanced forward or pressing forward depending on the opposition. High press with a high line and higher engagement.
AF
W IF
RPM
VOL BWM
FB BPD CD WB
SK
How would you be able to press the defensive areas more effectively? And it seems that the left winger doesn’t have as much influence as I would like him to have. Thank you!!
@@EpicDragon357 This is so fun, I love it. With the support winger, do you have the right attributes for him to do the job? And hmm, high press and line is an interesting call given that it's such a deep formation. I personally would prefer a CMa instead of volante because the guy's just so far back, you know? Would also connect with the winger better. If you're set on the shape maybe have the volante man-mark the opposition CM so he can press quicker and start transitions a bit higher. How are you liking the way it works tho? That's most important.
@@theavgdad CM(A) does make sense, my reason for volante was that he would help out defensively with the left fullback as he is my weakest link. It plays well, mostly going through the left side for some reason which involves my left back to be heavily involved. RPM is a god send when it comes to threading the needle and he is always a joy to watch.
Thank you for your advice once again and keep up with the videos! They’re very informative and helps me to visualize how roles play!
Technically, if I use a CM and put the same instruction as a MEz(AT) they will play exactly the same, right? Mez is just a premade roles while CM is the DIY role, am I correct? So with that logic we should play with a pair of CM and just adjust the instructions on the fly.
Definitely give it a shot, although some of those shapechangey roles can have hard-coded movement patterns that you can't replicate with PIs - halfback for example. I feel as if the mez and car get a lot wider than you can engineer with stuff like 'stay wider' on a CM
The Mezzala and Carrilero movement is unique. A Mezzala will move wide and become the missing winger/fullback in the formation. Those two are almost mandatory (with special exceptions) in Wingback/inverted wingback formations. One player can try, but is not consistently sufficient in providing width in midfield. While the Mezzala stays to his wing, the Carrilero will try to be the missing fullback for either side, hence the high stamina requirement for a role that doesn't move much vertically.
I didn't really understand the difference between a roaming playmaker and an advanced playmaker. And regarding another question, do you think it would be worth playing with two advanced playmakers to provide two strikers?
roamer will come deeper and move out to the sides more, follows the play. AP is a tad more static, and looks to hit the edge of the box. 2 APs... ehhhh. Worth trying if you want, but they might be too keen on passing to each other
@@theavgdad you are the best
CM (A) is heavily out of meta rn. I really like your videos but they are mostly for beginners and not really professional/meta focus. I would love to see you covering the meta tactics sometimes. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, and for sure, I'm not a huge fan of meta stuff because I like to imagine things that would work in real football - stuff that breaks the FM engine would get mauled in real football, usually. But yeah, might be fun to grab some of the meta tactics and break down what they're doing :) Edit to add, after reading that other thread, that I do agree that SS+AF and so on are powerful from an overloading standpoint, but then you gots to really plot out your ball distribution to make 'em work since progression in that zone becomes problematic, esp for the newer player.
As for having one wing on support and one on attack, I don't like it, because what I think I found the engine does is there is a built in priority system when it comes to creating chances from wide and certain roles do well only with certain other. When the wings are looking to create/link up, they are primarily looking at the number 10 area player, after that the striker. If there is no one supporting in attacking midfield, (CM on attack does not count as one in the engine) it focuses on the striker. You can test out the compatibility quickly in a single striker formation. With two it gets tricky, because the wings can focus on the striker and ignore the 10, if they are more compatible with him. I think the best chance creation happens when you pick wings for the second striker/Attacking Midfielder.
TF prefers wings on attack he can hold up for and release past him. Same for Poacher. AF/DLF/False 9 play significantly better with ones on support duty. The engine counts Wingbacks as a Winger, so if you're running a Winger on attack setup, you're also playing a Wingback on attack.
For Attacking Midfielders - any role on support likes to be a high pivot and send other runners ahead, while the attacking ones will carry the ball as far as they can and lay it off to the striker/supporting wingers below when they run out of space. Because the AMC on support tries to avoid getting inside the box, either play him with a runner from midfield or under an attacking trio.
What I haven't tested is telling a Poacher to also move into channels. Then he might work with both support and attack, but he'd still lack the dribbling required.
what about a 442 system with both dlf and af on attack with supporting wingers?
@@adroit3165 I'll correct myself later, because I currently am using the two roles and it's good. Just keep in mind with both of them on attack neither is pressing the opposition's holding mid. I assumed that a striker duo always should be complete complimentary opposites, but from further testing it comes out that they can do well, if not better, when they both require the same type of delivery. Chances and goals still happen, but I noticed the wingers will combine with one striker much more.
In the case of striker and AMC though, a supporting AMC always did twice, up to three times better with a forward ahead that moves into channels and the opposite. The game has weird rules about link up and chance creation that change depending both on who the 9 and 10 is. With two strikers I got good results with same type paired together with matching wings, but with an AMC no matter how much I tried to force it, the wings always did better on support.
The rules aren't consistent, so I get thrown off. For example - AF alone up top plays much better with Inside Forwards on support while the DLF preferred Inverted Wingers. It could be based on matching attacking mentality being higher, but then why is a False 9 also better with IF? It's arbitrary.
What probably makes the AF and DLF work as well as they do isn't as much that they both like the same type of Winger, but that one does hold up and the other dribbles as often as possible. Similar reasons why Poacher and False 9 work.
I tried to look for design reasoning based on some general logic, but there's barely any. You grope in the dark and try roles together until you see it works. There absolutely is predetermined engine cohesion between roles, it's just not consistent.
Do we have like a tester to check if our tactic makes sense? I'm struggling to make the bonds work properly
there's a web app around called ratemytactic, try that? Ultimately though, I'm happy when the players are doing what I want them to on the pitch.
when a meeting should of just been an email
