  • This is the Thrustmaster T248, the company's brand new entry-level force feedback wheel designed to dominate the low-budget sim racing market. If you ask me, it’s almost perfect but at $400, it stands in an awkward segment of the sim racing market.

Honestly, if you are getting into Sim Racing or have kids who like racing games, this is probably a really good entry level set up that doesn't require much more than the time to set it up and maybe a wheel stand or cockpit aside from the H pattern shifter. $400 isn't horrible considering you get the 2nd best set of pedals and an interesting looking wheel with a screen that kind of does look like it's straight out of a car. You pretty much get everything you'd need to keep a kid happy until he or she starts getting good and maybe upgrading becomes a thing. Those paddles though. Those are loud. Ouch. Otherwise this is a cool wheel. Not my thing, but if I ever got to the point where I wanted to do one of the truck driving sims, this would be the wheel I would use at it reminds me of the wheel in the trucks I actually drive at work.
Think I'll stick with my T300RS for now, as I patiently wait for the prices to drop on the SF1000. I'm not paying $875 for something that was advertised at less than $400 and an extra $70 for the Chrono trigger upgrade. I'm good with $500 after taxes and shipping. But I'm not paying some price gouging scalper an extra $400 because reasons. I'll wait.
This is probably the first video review of the T248 that actually gives you a realistic view point of the product in use as it might look in your own home.
Good video. I like this channel. Fair, objective and not afraid to give us the facts, no matter how much someone or some manufacturer might not like them. It's the only way things get better.

I bought this wheel last year and so far I've been really happy with it for the most part. I do agree with the plasticky feel of the inner rim which is a shame but since I use gloves(my hands tend to sweat a bit given I'm a lardass). Torque is pretty decent(3.5nm I think) and compared to the tmx pro I previously had it does feel better to use. I paid $599 aud for it when I bought it which is about $415 usd so yeah, quite expensive at the time but now it's down to about $350 usd so at least it's come down in price. I have the Playseat Evolution cockpit and it fits to that ok and apart from a bit of wobble when racing in Dirt Rally, it's fairly stable as well. I haven't noticed the slow return of the ffb but I don't really have anything else to measure it by as I'm only starting out with sim racing. For now though it's good enough for what I want and should serve me for now while I learn how to race without causing too much destruction to other racers. :)

Yup. If you already have high end pedals that can be driven independently straight from the PC (aka can be used with ANY wheel/base from ANY manufacturer) like Thrustmaster T-LCM's, it doesn't make sense to not just save up a little more and go straight Direct Drive with something like a Fanatec CSL DD.
For a first time force feedback wheel & pedal buyer though, the T248 is a great all-in-one package at the current $300 price point (aka ≈$320 w/ tax) and ESPECIALLY if you can find it for ≈$200-$250 used in good condition w/ everything included. 🤷

Love the video! I have seen this wheel on sale a lot around 300 dollars. I am definitely picking one up over the G923. The Logitech wheels are way to loud for my liking and I don't need a drifting wheel so this should be perfect for me.

    • @Cooe.
      @Cooe. Před 9 měsíci

The proper "Direct Drive" powered Fanatec CSL DD bundle is currently just $400 (so ≈$430 w/ tax) if you can step up to that puppy, which is BY FAAAAAAAR the best absolute "bang/$" currently available in force feedback sim-racing wheels. 🤷
(The CSL DD has ≈5nm vs the T248's ≈3.5nm of motor power/torque [aka, ≈+40% more], AND all the many, MANY benefits of a proper Direct Drive motor; although you are giving up the T248's included clutch pedal & adjustable tension brake pedal to make this particular upgrade happen.)
That said, if you can find the T248 used (in good condition w/ everything included) for like ≈$200-$250 though, then it becomes an absolutely SCREAMING good deal! (I actually found one this past month for just $195 on my local classifieds site! 🥳)
The T248 is definitely still totally solid value at the current $300 price brand new (so ≈$320 w/ tax), but I still heavily, HEAVILY recommend that most people just wait to save up another +$100 to get the much superior $400 Fanatec CSL DD bundle instead. 🤷

The thing that bothers me most about these higher end of the lower tier wheels. They are so small. Even the Thrustmaster Tx with a respectable 3.9 nm. The wheel is tiny at 28cm. Feels a little toyish, and makes it hard to do full wheel turns if you like to drift. At their price range its kind of really infringing on the mid-tier wheel bases like fanatec or Moza.

This won't work with my sim setup, which I can use for racing and playing more relaxed games like Euro truck and/or American truck sims. I am still using the G27. I removed the buttons and paddles, changed the wheel for something slightly bigger, added real indicator/wiper stalks which gave me the room to add a bmw cluster. The base on the logitech wheel is smaller and sleeker allowing room for the positioning of the cluster so one can see the gauges from within the steering wheels center as it would be in a car. I was considering an upgrade but am finding it hard choosing a suitable replacement for both budget and ease of transfer of all the modifications already in use. Because of your review I can remove this wheel from the list, thank you.

I watched a lot of CZcams videos looking for inspiration prior to starting but i don't have the money for something pre-built, even the cheaper setups are still quite expensive and take up quite a lot of space, neither of which I have a lot of not to mention, they are all centered around racing which would have put me off buying pre-built anyway. I play either ets2 or Ats more so I wanted to build something with that in mind and I wanted it to look somewhat realistic. The T300RS is unquestionably the superior wheel & base. Its motor is more powerful (≈4.5nm vs ≈3.5nm), as well as smoother and SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER thanks to the fully belt powered motor (aka no gears).
That said, as someone who used to have the T3PA's but now has T3PM's, the latter are most DEFINITELY the superior pedal box in basically every single way that matters (in some ways significantly so), so it's not quite as clear cut a comparison as one might initially think. 🤷
At launch this wheel was just too damn close to the 2x pedal T300RS at $400 vs ≈$450, but at its current price of $300 vs the T300RS's $400 (or $450 for the 3x pedal T3PA containing "GT" model) it now makes PLENTY of sense in its market segment.

Just remember, that a real racing car uses only mild steering assist, if not just straight up rack and pinion for the feel of it, the more help your power-steering gives, the less you feel what's going on at the wheels (which is the whole point behind FFB, and it's exaggerated because it is the only way to tell what the wheels are doing unless you go full motion sim)
I'd bet in your WRX you'd bend a rim with noticing it at the steering. If it were unpowered, hence harder to turn, you would feel every little bump and pebble on a gravel road. And with a bent rim your steering wheel would vibrate.
So it's actually not unrealistic in that area.
Just like a power-steering equiped car doesn't fight you going into turns, but you have so much more sensory inputs in a real car, that simulating what steering really does, feels kind of dull...

The T-MP sound is quite satisfying and nice to press down, but it's just a bit loud when releasing the paddle. Also, the MP is very precise in my opinion and I think you could downshift faster with this one xD as they are magnetic paddles once more. Hoped that the paddles were less chubby tho. G29 with a shifter is about 310. As far as I know Logitech does not make a Estop. There is not a connector on the wheel base either. I'm sure you could get a 3rd party one and connect it seperately. I have the G920 (Xbox version of G29) and I like it. For me the noise and rachety feel is way over emphasized in review videos. I don't notice either when I'm playing. Many complain about the "toy" feel, you will not get rid of this "toy" feel under $500+. I've used a friend's $1000+ setup and it's great, I'm just not willing to spend that kind of money to play a game. And that's just the beginning, once you spend that much for a wheel you're not going to be happy with just a desk and chair or a single 27" monitor you're going to want the whole setup. Start off with a $250 wheel and make sure you REALLY like it before you spend thousands on something you may not use that often. If on the other hand you find that you don't want to do any thing else but simrace in your spare time and you can afford go for it. A full blown setup is VERY nice. For me though my G920 and Quest 2 headset is "real" enough for me considering its not the only game I play.

@@mpholicx2 yes you are correct but in ebay there is handbrake and it costs around 85 dollars, even then it is still lower than the 400$ T248 That comes with the wheel it self and pedals with paddle shifters (I think)

@@mpholicx2Lol way to tell everyone that your current Logitech wheel is the only one you've ever actually used without telling everyone! 🤣
The gear only Logitech motors make the wheel feel like absolute chunky ASS vs even Thrustmaster's entry level gear + belt hybrids, and the feedback itself has significantly less "fidelity/resolution" thanks to the smallest motor movements possible being limited by the width of each gear tooth (whereas TM's additional belt let's their motor move the wheel anywhere they want, even if in-between gear teeth). Not to mention that the motor in this particular wheel (T248) is also SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful! (≈3.5nm vs Logi's ≈2.5nm)
Where Logitech has an unquestionable significant advantage otoh is in terms of external build quality/materials, but is that really where you want the build budget on an entry level force feedback wheel set going instead of into the actual motor & pedals?... O_o ... REALLY???
Basically/TL;DR = If buying cheap (=$400) you go proper "Direct Drive" with something like Fanatec's ≈5nm CSL DD bundle being just $400 nowadays. None of Logitech's offerings even REMOTELY make any sense anymore at current prices. 🤷

Except that Logitech's gear only motors feel like absolute FUCKING ASS compared to even Thrustmaster's entry level gear + belt hybrids. 🤷 Not to mention they are just straight up weaker motors (≈2.5nm vs the T248 here's ≈3.5nm), even if totally excusing their significantly worse feedback "resolution/fidelity".
Essentially, literally NOBODY should be buying Logitech force feedback wheels in the modern era with prices the way they are. Thrustmaster kicks the absolute fucking shit out of them under $400 and Fanatec + Moza's proper direct drive setups kick the shit out of them at/over $400.
