- This Live is all about dealing with the winter in Portugal. Proper winter weather has hit the north so we're bringing in a several year veteran of several towns across Portugal to talk with Kalie about Portuguese winters. Not all regions of Portugal are created the same and many people think that winter is still shorts and t-shirts in Portugal, but that's really only Madeira, although the Algarve isn't bad. 😁If you're Canadian or Russian, your definition of cold is different, however, you're welcome to join us and laugh about the relative cold that people have to deal with in Portugal.

Another thing that's really important is the windows. Single-pane glass windows are really bad at keeping the cold out. Double or triple-pane windows will do wonders in keeping your place warmer in the winter.
And on top of that, make sure the windows are fitted well, with no rattles or visible gaps.
Additionally, if you are renting and you find that your windows aren't in the best of condition, you can buy two-sided tape and transparent shrink-wrap. Attach the tape around the window frame and then affix a cut-to-fit plastic sheet. Then use a blow-dryer to heat the plastic wrap so it shrinks and becomes tight.
That becomes another layer of the window, trapping a layer of air between the glass and the inside of your home. And that'll really help keep your home warmer. Although you do loose the ability to open your windows as long as they have that film.
And if that's not enough, you can buy a sheet of foil-backed styrofoam. Cut it to fit your window frame and push it into place. Then use duct-tape to hold it in place and to cover the gaps. That will provide an R10 to R15 value's worth of insulation right there. Of course, it's tacky looking, but you can cover it up with curtains until the weather warms again.

I have a tip to help warm a room you're in that I learned from the Girl Scouts years ago. Take a clay pot & reservoir bottom (like the one you use for plants), light a tea candle on the bottom and then invert the clay pot over the candle. The tea candle will heat up the clay and that will generate warmth out. It really works and it's cheap!
Wow! I will try that here in Southern California! My place is so cold inside I wear a sweater and scarf on cold days. Seriously!

We did that to thaw a frozen pipe. It didn't really warm the room which was a bathroom, but it did help, I think, with the pipe.

A BIT INFORMATIVE....
Almost xmas and the weather has been nice just this last week the temperatures droped more, an indication that Winter is comming...This year almost no RAIN has come, witch is very NEEDED beacuse then the summer maybe we dont have water for the fires yes a lot every year its the national drama sometimes not the cold...
I am 50 years old, born in the center, interior of Portugal, CASTELO BRANCO city, up until my 18th lived in 2 diferent houses one old and one new this one still my parents house now, I had my grand parents house there and we had a farm 20kms from there still we have the house on the village near this farm sold to foreigners.
then I moved to university to Lisbon, now I live in the cascais area , but in Lisbon I lived in like 10 house moving from one to the other, renting, now I live is my own house.
Portugal going from south to north . the winter is very mild in the Algarve (from 10 to 20 celsius generally), all coast line temperature is always higher, a corridor of 20 to 40km, temperatures in all the coast are much nicer than the interior (WINTER AND SUMMER), but has the disadvantage of humidity, it plays a big part on the sensation of temperature, sometimes it feels more cold than it if windy, if it impreganates in houses it can make mold and humidity/water is a good heat conductor so houses with humidity they may lose the heat inside faster...
but going up to north, each 50km is a bit more cold, so the diference can be like 10/15 celsius degrees less, but it rarelly snows in the algarve up to coimbra or even Porto, but on or 2 days it can snow and its a joy to the people , then the most upper part maybe it will snow some like 5 to 10 days at the most in the coldest part with micro climate, yes Portugal is small but has a lot of micro climate regions, maybe because map is not to flat. JANUARY and FEBRUARY are the cold months then the cold basically is over... bellow 0 degress maybe we have 2 or 3 days and maybe none on most of the country, there are places/ regions that yes you will get them more can go to 15 days or even 20 days in a year but maybe not even the all day...
back to my experiences in housing , in CASTELO BRANCO when little I remember quite well the freezing in the winter, there is one of the coldest areas in portugal like the very north, but has an explanation it is on the iberian planalt near the highest Portugal point (serra da estrela) so this planalt is going up until Madrid spain , so this region is very cold it can go to the bone the cold.
I have my 74 years old parents there so when I phone them always is more cold there much more, and funny in the summer its much more hot much more ( Castelo Branco and Beja cities are the hotest part of portugal consistently almost like deserts temperatures).
but in CB I never had mold problems in any house I lived for 18 years....nor I remember that on my grand parents house there.
In Lisbon I had mold problem in one new house, it started slowly I lived there for 12 years but in the firt 5 no problem but after in one room it had it, but all the other houses I never had mold problems , I would say its not generally a problem, but the cold inside is , Portugal has only 2 month against 10 of good temperatures so buldings are not done for the low temperatures at least the more affordable , I bet the more expensive new house that is no problem.
But i pay bills for like 25 years and never payed so many big bills , I of course use common sense, I never leave radiators or any heat systems constantly on...if so then the bills come. I mean I survived prety good still here and even dont see this has a big problem, Portugal is one of the mildest temperatures in the all continental Europe, so cant complain to much, I was never rich so a take on my hands what I have to do to sort things but never was a problem sorting the cold on my living has time goes by.
Every one has different houses different experiences , Louisa Tanner is funny and sometimes takes the story has a Charles Dickens very describable stories, but I think its not generalized has for example my experiences, but even so I reckon well we have to choose well the houses and know a bit the place is there are micro climates or if it goes in the line of the cost where can be air currents comming from the atlantic ( atlantic is a very cold sea generally )

We lease a newer apartment in Aveiro and are doing well with good insulation and radiators throughout. We have a condensation dryer in our kitchen - a new addition and staying very comfortable so far. We also have a little dehumidifier in our master bedroom closet and one in the entryway closet. (Picked them up at Leroy Merlin). It is now early December and expected to climb back up into the low 60’s all next week! This is wonderful compared to living in the Pacific NW in Washington state! We’ll see how the electric bill changes soon.

I lived in an apartment with central heat in expo area for 5 years and never had any problems with humidity, cold or mold issues. 👍

Great conversation. It’s true what she says about that fog from Foz de Arelho to Nazaré. I was just south, near Peniche and Baleal and didn’t get that in the winter. It is a damp cool (This Canadian who is from a very humid and extreme damp cold part of the country) and definitely it can be warmer outside…. I sat on the beach in a tshirt in January. I spent Christmas Day on the beaches of Baleal and it was wonderful! Oh, and Louisa when I arrived I threw my winter boots in a closet and before I left, nearly 3 months laters, my boots had mould growing on mould. Sadly had to throw them out, yikes!

This is truly an eyeopener. A little disheartening though. I have been stating that Lisbon, Portugal will be my home, but unless I can build a mold free home with proper insulation, heating & air, I will only visit Portugal during the Spring.
I’ll be in Lisbon from mid Feb to mid March (2023). Renting an apartment through AirBNB. This video has been hugely helpful. This Canadian will bring some hand knits to keep warm. Our landlord assured us he has space heaters so we’ll do our best to be good electricity stewards. Obrigada!

Buy and use a dehumidifier, for they work.
I had the reverse problem in South Korea, with the summers being unbearably hot and humid. And without a dehumidifier there, black mold would grow on the walls of an apartment.
Portugal is very wet in the winter
I don’t have problems with mold because my house was built under the new building regulations.

Utilities - we originally had our rental with all inclusive with higher band. Then utility bill got sky rocket. Now we agreed with our renter - that we notched down the bandwidth - and renters pay anything over 150€ per month (EDP, MEO and Porto water bill combined). For some reason out water and EDP are much higher in summer (from running 2 wall-mount Mitsubishi ACs all day?). With 2017-2019 built built bldg, winter situation is under control?

I visited Porto in October and the humidity was brutal. I can't imagine that combined with cold. No wonder mold is an issue. Definitely not for me.

Yes, been waiting for this. We'll be in Portugal next month and I hate the cold. I've been praying that the weather doesn't dip below 60 degrees when we're there. We'll be in the Algarve for 5 days and then in Lisbon for the last 5 days.

I bought a dehumidifier for the sala de estar but I think I need one in the bedroom. I have condensation on the inside of my room.

ANOTHER OPTION IS EARTH BERM HOUSES, Partially buried, using the Eart to warm the house,
and soil retains heat, They are used in montana... -40 F and work fine... PELLET STOVES ARE CHEAP and PRODUCE LOTS OF HEAT, They cost about $350 in the states...
Do folks use their portable radiators and dehumidifiers at the same time? Is it expensive to use a dehumidifier?

I think the Mexicans had it right with adobe buildings. Adobe is made of mud and straw bricks. The insulation is so good you stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Seems strange to me that in Spain and Portugal they wouldn't have figured out a building material to make homes more comfortable year round.

I didn't think I would say this but I will now. I really feel that Portugal will not be my new home. I REALLY DISLIKE COLD WEATHER.😭😭😭 People, let me tell you I have seen the worst winters in my life. I grew up in Chicago. And I've even done my share of shoveling plenty of snow. One day I said, no more. And I moved to sunny Puerto Rico. I think you girls confirmed to me that Portugal won't be my new home. I also dislike humidity mixed with cold and then mold on top of that. Today especially, December 11th, the weather was perfect. And even though it's a humid island the humidity was low enough to cause my clothes that I hung out to dry to dry quicker. However, I do want to still visit Portugal and maybe stay there for months at a time but during warmer months not Winter. Thank you so much for your insight and comments.

The Algarve is completely different though

These old houses have absolutely no insulation whatsoever, The water travels through the stone,
and rising damp....Its behind the walls, mold, cold and damp. Its the style of construction.
The only heat they had was cooking fires and fireplaces... They toughed it out with wool clothes and
wood heat... The roofs are drafty and open so absolutely no way to insulate anything. There is not way to retrofit any of it...... You would have to modify the house completely to make it viable.
EARTHSHIPS, Work even in Alaska and Russia, arctic weather...I have seen in Norway and Russia, they are efficient.. CONCRETE DOMES, ARE FIREPROOF, and low cost, No internal structures.
A heat pump won't work unless your house is very well insulated. And if it is it will be suffocatingly hot in the summer.

just like kappa2ou3 said, insulation works both ways. Contrary to what people assume old portuguese houses are not particularly well thought for summer, unless you go to Alentejo or Algarve. The thing is, you just happen to suffer more with conditions during winter.
With better wall and ceiling insulation houses stay cooler during summer, and new constructions show that. Unfortunately many newer buildings, even though they have better insulation, have adopted much bigger windows and balconies without proper shading, which nullifies some of the gains from better insulation.
Portugal= 3 World country. Without tourism Portugal would still stuck in middle age
