Convenient one handed docking solution for iPhone 6 in the lower forward storage area of the MK7 Series (2015 & 2016) VW Golf. Perfect for use with 2016 and newer models that integrate Apple's CarPlay system where a physical connection with the Lightning connector is necessary but viewing the phone's display is not. It's also possible to close the lid of the storage while the phone is in the dock for security or just a clean look.

Brilliant! I agree that you should produce these. Expect to be supplanted by VW themselves...eventually, but in the mean time you make some nice pocket change. Should be a fairly low effort startup. Alternatively, it would be smart of VW to cultivate their fanbases' ingenious innovations to reward the creators, inspire new creations, improve their brand, and create a better product.
If I had a MK7 I would definitely buy one of these! I wish that there was something like this for the MK6.

That's weird, the GTI doesn't come with automatic dual zone climate control there? They come as standard here in Europe for GTI, GTD, GTE and R.
I would pay like 50$ if you’d make one for my Mitsubishi . I don’t know how to make 3d models but I do have an ar camera on my iPhone and I know I can make some mock 3d models with it for references fairly easily.

Just got a Golf R right hand drive (UK) and this is a fantastic mod. Do you have any plans to flip the case with the Shapeways guys for a RHD car? Also I've got an iPhone 6s Plus - any plans to prepare a range of cases to fit these range of devices? Love the work...it's a perfect simple solution to the phone flopping around in that dash pocket!
Thanks for the comments! I am just finishing the details of a more universal design. I just printed number 21 trying to get the fit correct and the parts working as well as possible. The first functional prototype just got installed in my GTI last night At some point, it'd be great to see if just by flipping it, that it would fit the bin - don't know if it would be that easy?? If you wanted to send me a private message on the Shapeways site, we could exchange email for you to send me a good picture of a RHD bin. Maybe it'd be possible to tell just from a visual if the details and shape of the bin are similar. Again, thanks for the encouragement and have fun with the R!!

I have the same basic stereo (infotainment system without satnav) in my R, but VW told me I couldn't use "app connect" feature because I don't have the navigation or navigation pro model of stereo.

To my understanding, at least in the US, it shouldn't matter if it has the navi unit or not. As long as it is a 2016 model with the MIB II head unit, it should include the capability to use the AppConnect system with CarPlay, Android Auto, or Mirror Link.
Some regions require the dealer to unlock App Connect (or if you have VCDS/OBDeleven, I think you can do it yourself).

+mikepartyboy Hi Mike. My son fits his in by taking his case off. Because the 5 is a bit narrower, it does not center itself like it does with the 6. I guess it would be possible to put some shims of some kind on the sides under the felt though. Other than that, the lightning cable still connects fine because the heights of the phones are similar enough.

This piece is utterly useless why would I buy this invention when my phone already sits perfectly fine with any case in the tray without screwing an overpriced piece of plastic inside which takes up almost the entire space, which I usually use for my keys, chewing gum sunglasses etc. ?! Still I have to say that it's nice to see more and more mods and options coming out for the Golf 7 please keep going and inventing stuff! I.e a can holder for the driver and passenger door cupholders which can also handle a Red Bull would be really nice! Cause when you put a can in the door compartments they usually become Airbone after eating a few corners with the GTI ;)
