What's your blackjack strategy?
1-16 call, 18-21 stand. 🤷♂️
I can make something up saying I use the German low count technique, but I’m not good in calculating a full deck after the first deck is played.
Basic strategy doesn’t work on 25 decks, and if the count is high, you do something like counting how many high cards were played then divided by a number giving you the value of the possible next face value, versus low count which is waaaay more sophisticated and relies on gambling and nerves.
You cant beat probabilities and odds, and can’t beat differentiation of decks shuffle. 🤷♂️ or can you I don’t know.
My roulette strategy, is betting corners which is 4 numbers. Pay out is 8to 1.
So if I bet 6-7 corners I buy myself in to hitting a 0 double split in every game. With common sense not every game is going to land you that chance… it’s like 12-15% to get 0 or double zero which is at the opposite side of each other on the roulette table. 🤷♂️
I did so good one time I stop splitting zero and double zero. I even did 2 separate bets 5$ chips on corners, and 1 dollar chips on single. Because I was playing for 4 hours and was up by 1000%. Plus the table was weirdly hot on zeros so… 🤷♂️
@@bored9260 what do you mean by “call”? That’s not a thing in black jack.
@@bored9260 1-16? You never have 1. And who would even think of hitting on an 18 or more?
Losing all my money.
Chuck is gold. I can't believe I didn't find this channel until this week
you're in for quite a ride!
GREAT episode. There's something really special about the dynamics between Neil, Chuck, and Gary. Semyon was a great guest.
Neil, Chuck, you two are great hosts to a great show. And when you have guests, they are amazing. Keep up the great work.
WTf chuck are you talking about?
Garry awesome as well!

I love the people who think you have to be a math genius to count cards. When it's literally adding and subtracting 1.
It's finding when to start adding and subtracting that makes it difficult to practice (I have not attempted card counting)
After carrying around a deck of cards one summer, convinced I was going to make a living playing blackjack, I finally realized I simply wasn't accurate enough to keep a perfect count all the time. The hands come at you quick.
Working out the True count , not just a soft count requires you to be a genius, you have to divide it by the amount of cards remaining in the deck, let alone knowing how many cards have been cut at the back , the pros could cut exactly 1 deck of cards every time.
SayS the man wealthy as Creosus due to card counting. No?
"I love the people"
You do with a name like that.
There is soo much beauty and wisdom in this show.. and I can't help but think, regardless of the seemingly crass, sometimes boyish nature of your exchanges, what a far superior, beautiful world we'd be living in with gentlemen such as yourself as the helm..
I love at 25:08, chucks expression about winning a few million dollars! “Seriously…”
Love your shows! Thank you guys
Who else got also that little moment of relief when you begin watching the video that has an interesting topic when neil announces Chuck
Great episode y'all! 👏 ❤️
Clarification: Counting cards is not illegal as long as you are not using a "device"... meaning, if you do it entirely in your head, you're fine. However, if you use any object to help keep count (i.e. nail marks on drinking cups, beads on a key chain, etc.) then you are violating the law.
Also, after the MIT team, casinos made tons of procedural changes to protect their house advantage. Most casinos stopped offering mid shoe entry to prevent the big bettor jumping in at high favorable counts. Others instituted cutting shoes in half (the more deep into the shoe the play goes, the more accurate the count) to prevent deep counting. Continuous shufflers offer similar protection since the deck never ends. Overall, it is hard to find a game being offered that allowed the MIT team to find such success. Today's card counters grind out long hours for minimal profit and due to high training (and now the aid of computers and play recognition software), they are spotted and backed off fairly quickly.
Always a delighful way to learn, love you deeply guys🤗
Every episode seems like its the perfect group of personalities love it
This one is surprisingly a great listen
Stop right here everyone. Their guest’s mentioning of Ken Uston is key, and HIS reading of “Beat the Dealer” is where all of this card counting drama came from; FACTS!!!
Great discussion...much more than the video title suggests. It's great to hear how really Productive people Think and Act. It all started with a trip to the Library to "Learn" how to improve at PacMan..... I Love It!!!!
I'm watching this now. AP here. Thank you so much for this video.
BTW, I'm also learning HiOPTII w/ ASC. OMG!
I just had a vision of NDT opening for Chuck’s stand up. They are both terribly funny.
Man, Chuck just makes this channel so amazing!
As Always Great Content........
I tried the Ace/5 count and the pitboss started chatting me up to break my concentration (instead of my knees).
Neil and Chuck for 2024
I've got Ben Mezrich to thank for introducing me to the topic of card counting - his books Bringing down the House and Busting Vegas were based on these stories.
Neil is right about the game being about probabilities, the act of not betting on each individual event but over a series of events the edge will act like magic is probabilities, thats how casinos work, they dont worry about every person who wins a jackpot but evaluate their winnings after a series of events or period
the mind, the soul, idea, intentional, reason, fear, ignorance, health, pride, dream, inattentive, patience
Victoria Coren-Mitchell would be another great guest to ask about poker. She's a world champion, brilliant and funny. I don't know if she's still playing professionally, so she may or may not be able to share her insights without telling!
Chuck dropping bars 🔥🔥 the importance of purpose
Just in time for Christmas!
i am taking 10 dollars and will make it 1k because the same formula watch... 10 days t o make 1k
I learned card counting at blackjack a few years ago along with perfect basic strategy. It's no guarantee you will win anything but it makes you feel smart at the table LOL. The size your bankroll needs to be to play like a professional is unrealistic. And you can win or lose many thousands of dollars in one day, which is extremely stressful.
Not to mention once they start using three and four decks at a time it's really hard to do
@@williamlannan3129 no, you use grade school math to divide the running count by the remaining number of decks in the shoe. It's actually easier than you think.
@@williamlannan3129 No, then you use 4th grade math.
Yeah most ppl don't have a massive bank roll, but if your game is solid there are investors out there.
StarTalk may just be the greatest series that exists on any medium today. Change my mind.
This was a great show
Lord nice is not wrong. Poverty is an amazing motivator.
This is great! I love playing blackjack. However, whatever I do, I like to win.

Hi Neil,. Is your outro song by an artist named plastic man???? I had a game on PS2 that had very similar sounding tracks just wondering
Straight facts chuck 💯nuff respect
Thanks!!!
Neil, have you read the 1985 book "The Eudaemonic Pie"? It is a wonderfully informative true tale of physicists and computer techs taking on Las Vegas.
Chuck always has a really cool quip or two
Chuck. 😁 That impression of T****. A+
In the early 80's I went in a cassino in Paraguay (the Hotel in Foz do Iguaçu used to have a bus to the cassino, since there are no legal cassinos in Brazil), the cards in the 21 game were all bent and marked, I asked if they had new cards, the cold answer was NO. Not a place to bet at all. It may have changed today, but I have no idea.
I have a good friend who wrote a book about the stock market, and how to approach it properly as an investor. "Trade Like a Casino" by Richard Weisman. Casinos make their money over a long term because the gaming community/laws or rules, grants them a 3% annual average advantage over the random gambler. The stock market works a bit similar, in the average accumulation of your investment. You can not look at the up and down, but the mean for the duration. There is no granting of 3% in the stock market, by laws or regulations, however there is enough participation in the long term, that allows trust to grow over time. Counting cards seems to be the same type of game.
It certainly does not seem like the same type of game. The economy has black swan events that profoundly effect the stock market, such as economic crashes, pandemics, wars, and terrorist attacks.
Alright!!
Let's make some money!
Hey neil👋 what's the Three body problem? Could you explain in simple manor please
I'm a 45 y.o. Latino high school drop out with no diploma and currently homeless, yet I have design ideas , sketches and written down possible ways to unravel a more efficient ac motor, a visual reason why there's so many digits in PI.
I have a hypothesis of the origin of the star of David that's origin isn't religious at all but mathematical, the teseract 4th dimension as simple as thinking about how triangles can from a cube.
The golden ratio is only 1 part of 3 that interlink at the x , y and z intersection at it's core so it forms a Nautilus sphere and that is where I begin my idea for a ac machine that offers perpetual motion and self replenishing energy also anti gravity gyroscope like behavior.
I feel like my life would be in danger if I release this on my own and need help or at least protection.
sounds like you have some deep thoughts. you should share it.
Good training helps a lot. Counting is just a mental simulation
Wonder if Johnny Magic will be mentioned
Most casinos these days change the entire deck after every hand or two now, with electronic shuffler machines. It makes any amount of card counting far less potent.
Yep they might go and use three decks for three or four hands and then change it whole thing out
One of my favourite cold openings of _The X-Files_ shows a bus headed to Las Vegas. One of the passengers is explaining to someone his "system" he was planning on using.
Another passenger nearby pipes up, simultaneously pleasant and ominous, saying, "You know what Vegas says to players who come with 'a system,' right?"
Slightly concerned, the first guy asks, "What...?"
The other man cheekily intones, "... 'Welcome '..."
😉
Extraordinary man.
Probability matters.
Pure love you guys,
Love your videos
Please please please never stop ♥️
Help me count cards Professor Tyson. I need to earn that money. 🤣🤣🤣. Lol
Chuck is the best co host
My concern about StarTalk is that you frequently have interesting guests; I'd like to hear what they have to say. Unfortunately and too often another invited guest or other comedian jumps into the conversation, eats up a bunch of the expert's time and the show or segment is over before the expert gets to expound, in depth, on the subject. More frequently now, because of that usual scenario, I've stopped watching StarTalk. Is StarTalk funny? Yes, frequently. But I'm not tuning into StarTalk for humor; I'm listening to learn what the expert has to offer.
Pretty sure they can make these whatever length they want. That’s what’s great about not being on standard broadcast tv. I highly doubt the comedic input is deleting the expert content.
There’s been many times when the experts are in mid-sentence/thought and a joke is made and they never get back on track. Those times I’m left wanting for what they had to say. I get why there’s humor; to make it more accessible. Especially for the weightier topics. That’s why I liked Neil’s Cosmos tv series a bit more
You’re probably describing a college lecture, right? This is a tv show with an unscripted comedian as part of the cast, my friend !!
8:00 - nice lol
I don't love how most of the comments today starts with: "I love how..."
I ended up in negative 78 🤷♂️ odds for low decrease then there was the subdivision count which is legendary that people would love to learn. I think it was invented by the Germans or Russians.
Before i watch this i grew up in Reno Nevada and no one makes millions at cards, go beat the lotto odds if you want millions. I started gambling at 21 officially, and stopped 1 month later when i had to borrow $750 rent money from my angry mother in 1993 to keep my kids from being homeless, i have an eidetic memory and still cannot count seven decks, that's a fairly tale. 55 yrs old in 2024 and have not gambled since, except on trying to get away with things behind my wife's back, not good odds. The auto shuffler is a python algorithm and its not random no such thing. Added. Chuck you're still on my bucket list so GO to northern Utah already.
why are casinos or gambling institutions allowed to ban card counting and what are the legalities concerning gambling, in other words, can someone be "too smart" to gamble at certain establishments? Are these businesses allowed to take advantage of people who don't "get it" and ban people who "know better?"
At about 25:01, the gentleman from MIT summed up why I, for one, don't play blackjack @ casinos.....it's just not interesting.
Because you are playing against a dealer ("the house") whose actions are entirely constrained by house rules (publicized....read the disclaimers), it ultimately becomes a crushingly boring passtime. If you can play like a Cray supercomputer, and don't lose your focus, AND have a deep bank to weather the storms of chaos frigging up your concentration, you will eventually prevail....great! you can sweat for hours, and make less than 1% percent of what you brought. If you are perfect.
I am not a pro by any means....but I play a fair amount of various versions of small stakes poker. And that's where its fun. In a sense( 3rd grade arithmetic skills and relative sobriety notwithstanding...), I am playing the cards, yes....but I am actually playing the other players: tells, betting patterns, etc.
And, for me, that's where the fun is! Do I count cards? Of course I do! Do I utilize game theory, quantum physics, lucky rabbit's feet....nope.
A fascinating presentation! Thanks to all..nicely done!
will neural link and AI make gambling with cards obsolete?
No. The games will change as necessary to keep the casinos profitable.
I love you "StarTalk"!
From this episode, I learned that our Lord Chuck is already smarter than the average of those in power.
I followed Neil's advice and now I'm running from my mob debts! Oh, right, he said you needed "talent." :P
I wrote a BJ counter simulator. I practiced counting and was able to keep count in the confusion of a casino. My simulator told me that I would usually have a good day...but not always. I ran the simulator to run a year's worth of hand you would usually have a good year... bit not always. I then ran it for a lifetime's worth of hand and usually you have a good life...but not always. Sometimes following the same rules one oerson arrives at a casino in a limo and another guy is drunk in the gutter. It's still what cards you get dealt.
We recognize prince 🤴 Charles of England 🇬🇧 but ignore "Lord Nice " of the United States. It will still fall into remembering the cards that was dealt. If you have poor memory this will not work
7-15 decks. 16 or lower hit, 17 and up stand 🤷♂️
depends what the dealer's up card is also

This video should be renamed to "How to make millions counting cards and be better parents". 🤣
I love immigrants, I grew up around a huge variety of people partly because the university in my hometown has a great foreign exchange program, it made my life and especially my youth some much richer, fun, colorful and interesting and left me much wiser and with a broader perspective and, I really think, altogether smarter and stronger as a person and as an American.
Yes, LEGAL immigrants.
Dr Tyson explain to us all why the milky is 14.6 million miles across but Jupiter is 484 millions miles away on average could you please talk to Google for us thank you from Canada
There's a big difference between illegal immigration and legal immigration Chuck. Don't let your hatred of 1 person blinds you. I can speak from experience because I am an immigrant. My family did it legally and now we are citizens.
Money doesn't mean anything, if you don't care about the winnings, because you know your going to win, thank you Chuck
Shut up

The guy is clearly telling them to demystify nonsense but apparently some (notably Gary) do not understand it. Gary wants to believe there is a "big secret" and "strategy" in gambling. Sure, go for it.

As Joe Rogan said - Look at the size of the casino. It doesn’t get that big by losing. Wise words.
casino's are not evil,,, they don't rob people... but they'll take all the money you want to give them... lol...
Casino counts their cards to, to cycle

The most important rule on gambling is to always quit while you're on top. All gambling strategies inevitably lose to the house edge in the long term.
Lol
Thank you Mr. Dukach for the way you express yourself about immigrants, lots of brothers and sisters have lost their life pursuing the "dream" so thank you for speaking of them with respect.
I have praised/thanked before Chuck for his activism, they make proud to be a loyal viewer of the channel. 👍👍👍👍
Dukach thinks everyone has an automatic right to come to the US to live. He couldn't be more wrong.
@@suncat9 I totally get your point and agree with you, it's just how many people speak of immigrants with disrespect forgetting that all of the American continent is built by immigration.
ah, nice to learn about how the counting card thing sits... my real growth from your meeting came from an enlightenment when considering immigration. developed societies seem to not generate enough folk to sustain what we already built and walls dont really work. AI may fit in to free us from some support as we now know it so we may get an all around better life. im at a real loss to find any top down control system that presently supports much sharing and care. i hope others start to also understand we all live here together better than in angry camps apart. angry just allows corruption to flourish when kept going. I look forward to a world that understands how to fit us all in together.
Imagine a rich person who could just retire and chill the out for once

I find it interesting that Simeon viewed the casino money as alright to take and not considered that the casino only got it tjrough the losses of others.
