  • In this Saltwater Hawaii episode, I use a bait not commonly used. Even though we were fishing for Ulua, I was still happy with the 5.2 lb Omilu Papio. Hope me and my dad can go back and catch one Ulua!

    Funny thing about the big papios and few uluas I’ve picked up is what I find in the stomach. I have seriously never found them with oama, tako, shrimp or really any of the “prime” baits you would use. The two white uluas I’ve caught had belly’s full of baby black triggerfish. And I’ve found papios with lizard fish in their bellies more times than I can count. But every time I’ve tried those baits on the line, I never get any luck. Lol. Fish can be weird when it comes to their feeding habits

    Mud skippers are pretty good bait for papios. Back in the days when ala wai canal was still ala wai canal i use to go catch opai and opu palu now those are good for papio and barracudas

    those tips u cut off the tako leg before sliding em, save those. put a couple on a hook when o’io fishing. they love tako tips.

    Nice fish! Choke action! Next time you slide, I was taught not to fling the slide down like you did cuz if it loops over and hooks the line your screwed you gotta jack up and recast🤙🏽

    Maybe try stuff a floating lure inside a taco or squid , an slow retrieve that through the white water, or run a line across a cove an tie it off an slide a floating taco connected by a wooden close pin , into the white water , so only the taco can touch the water a drift around in the current,
