    The problem is the whole rear suspension not just the rear end. Including the frame flex. You need to reinforce it. It flexes a lot and will eventually twist the body.

      For all out high performance ford 9inch is the best option. There cheaper options out there but you have to constantly be upgrading the rear end when your power level increases at the same time. The reason i didnt do 8.8 as a option is due to stock needs c clip elimators or cut axle flanges off and convert to 9inch ends so axles don't slide out like chevy rear ends. Glad you found a cheaper option that works for your build.

    1986 Olds442- I've been running the 8.5" 3.73 10 bolt since 1996 when I put a '68 Olds 350 in it. Got to 12.40s with slicks and open headers by 2000. Over 800 passes down the quarter mile and still going strong (streep/strip-driven to the track). I replaced the limited slip diff back in 2007. I suppose it might be around 400HP at the crank. Either I've been lucky or the 8.5" 10 bolt is adequate for 400hp and tolerates drag slicks. Must be part luck because I've also used a turbo 350 with stock components, even the intermediate sprage race, and only broke that once at the track and high gear took a crap once but it was still drivable home. The 9" makes sense with the value of the 8.5" 10 bolt, Im just too lazy at 60 to bother switching it and the drag racing days are slowing down.

      Sounds like a good setup for your power level. Thats is enjoyable and fun without needing the upgrade of a ford 9inch. It would be different if you were planning to increase power level enough to justify the need for a ford 9inch to handle the additional power. Then it would be a different situation.

    IM ONLY running about 300hp LS in my Gbody, might Stage 1 cam it but nothing serious,
    SO i just need faster gears than stock 2.33 granny gears.

    • @gaspoweredgarage
      @gaspoweredgarage  Před rokem

      Depending on if this is a daily /gas saver versus fun car changes what you use. If your car is a 3speed automatic use 3.08 or 3.23 for daily(good mpg/good acceleration), fun car use 3.42, 3.55 or 3.73 (bad mpg and even better acceleration). Reason people say don't go more than 3.08 gears with without a overdrive trans is due to rpms you run at high way speeds compared to a overdrive at highway speeds which is lower.

      @gaspoweredgarage  Před 13 dny

      ls1 brakes refers to 1998-02 model camaro and firebird brakes. they were installed on all trim levels so v6 model and v8 model. if you use the factory camaro /firebird backing plates like how i did it they will need to be machined in the center. since the backing plates act as a retainer for holding the axles bearing in place also. if you use aftermarket brackets you would have one for retaining the axle bearing and the second one for the brake caliper and rotor. i go into more details on what parts you need for using the ls1 rear brakes in this video-czcams.com/video/ezwhuGdWcAE/video.html.

      @gaspoweredgarage  Před 3 měsíci

      Here is the list on what is required for the fitment of a Impala ss rear end into your cutlass. Impala ss rear end is to long from the start, it uses different wheel bolt pattern than gbody. Would require cutting / relocating the spring perches and lower trailing arms bracket, and cutting / shortening axles tubes and then buying proper length axles.then if you do all that you might as well upgrade the oem posi third member to handle the power your cutlass is making currently or plans to make in the future. Which then circles back to it would be cheaper to start with a ford 9inch setup for a gbody instead.

      make sure it has the proper axle ends based on what brakes your going with. if your staying gm based brakes look for one with gm housing ends.
      2- rear brakes is next which 98-02 camaro/firebird rear disc brakes is simple and cheap to get from your local junkyard or facebook market/craigslist.
