  • For a change I thought it might be interesting to take a look at a model steam engine that you can buy today. In this case a Mamod SP2.

In the video I incorrectly identify the end of the conrod that connects to the crank pin as the small end. This is of course the big end of the conrod.

Hi Alan. I was a bit surprised to see them use rivets into the boiler. I wonder how they ensure a seal ? Cheers Rob

Hi Rob. I have seen rivets used on model steam engine boilers before but it is a bit unusual. They are copper so similar expansion rate to the brass the boiler is made from. Seems to work ok. Cheers, Alan.

Thanks Kev. I just thought it would make a change for people to see a model steam engine that you can actually buy today. The new price is way too expensive if you ask me! Cheers, Alan.

Nice to have this one in your collection Alan. At the last model engineering show I visited, Mamod were there. And yes, I was shocked at the prices. But also glad they are still in busines. Cheers Nobby

Hi Nobby. I agree with you, glad that the name Mamod is still around but the models are definitely priced for collectors and enthusiasts rather than kids. Cheers, Alan.

Nice demo Alan, makes me want to fire up my same model mamod.😊

Thanks David. As you can tell I was quite impressed with it, I don't think the retail price is justified though. Cheers, Alan.

Alan good vid. I've had one for over 10 years that I'm pretty sure wasn't ever steamed when I bought it and neither have I..... I might have to rectify that 😊

Thanks Jim. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. The flywheel, crankshaft and conrod are definite improvements over the early ones. Not so sure about the firebox though. Cheers, Alan.

Nice engine, but we'll out of pocket money saving to buy one. Then again it is probably old people who used to have one buying them anyway.

You could be right about the market they are targeting.

Hexamine yes but solid fuel tablets are still available for sale in the UK, Amazon has them.

Memories of my Mamod I had as a kid in the early 70’s. How I managed to run it unsupervised and not burn the house down. Meths and matches 😮🫣🥴

Same here Andrew. I remember once trying to run my Mamod using candles as we had run out of meths! Cheers, Alan.
