- The Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Package ($2+ Million USD) is a hybrid hypercar with a naturally aspirated V8 and a gruesome 887 horsepower combined. Despite this, it is said to be the tamest choice of the hypercar holy trinity; compared to the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Mclaren P1. But what makes a hypercar a hypercar? And is it even possible for an 887 horsepower, carbon fibre adorned, Porsche engineered monster to be tame? Thomas and James are bright-eyed and bushy tailed, eagerly waiting to pop their hypercar cherry. Let’s see what the guys think! We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!

The way this looks after soo many years makes me understand Porsche's simplistic design style. It simply stands the test of time effortlessly
Well put. It's so true too!
It looks really good. but it's not as pretty as a laferrari imho. However Porsche's design ages really well, as you pointed out.
Not true all Porsche look the same that’s why. That’s why most people don’t buy theee cars or own 2-3 of them you can see people buy 2-4 Ferrari not the Porsche they all look the same.
*Looks at whatever garbage BMW's churning out these days*
Thanks for commenting on the car, so sick of people repeating the exact same phrases for every video like "you are amazing guys" "you are the best youtubers" "your videos are great", like ok, we already knew that, let's talk about the car, the detail. I appreciate your comment
James’s reaction after launching it for the first time might be my favorite moment in the history of the channel

I have to say, this might be the best review I have EVER seen in terms of properly communicating what it must be like for "normal people" like me to experience driving a true hypercar. It was exhilarating just to watch, and the thought that I'll never be able to experience something like that makes me emotional all on its own. What a fantastic opportunity you guys were given, and props for doing such a great job of communicating it so that we laypeople could live vicariously through your experience.

For those interested, this has AWD and 4 wheel steering. This car has 500 tq at 800 rpm, with a max torque of 944. This was the first production road car to lap the Nürburgring in under 7 minutes at 6:57, beating the previous record, Dodge Viper ACR, by 14 seconds!
You might need to change this to say it dif it in under 7 minutes. But yeah, the 918 is up there as one of the all time greats in my eyes
Yes but can it do the kessel run in less than 12 parsecs?
Hey guys I saw a video for a new Porsche that came out a few months ago but I can’t remember the model. If I remember correctly it was like a refreshed version of an older model. Manual transmission. Relatively cheap for a new Porsche, under 140k I think.
It was driver focused but not as high performance as the GT3. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That Porsche looks like it hasn’t aged a day since last decade. It would look new if it were released today. What an incredible piece of technology.
This car hit the scene in the mid 2010s. She has not aged one day since then.
So true, it looks better than most of the super car manufactured today.
Weird, right? Looks 2023 with car designs now being simplified and less aggressive than their previous generations.
Probably because it hasn't been that long. 2015 was pretty recent

Even after 10 years, the 918 still feels fresh!

I work at Porsche, and let me tell you, they are working on a new Hypercar for production. Great things coming from Porsche, always!
The Mission X sir?
“I’d take this over an LFA.” Enough said. My ultimate dream car.
Wait until they get their hands on a Carrera GT.
It’s a better looking interior ….but the LFA sound is hands down better
@@billseiler4952If you’re basing buying an incredible sports car on sound alone you’re missing the greater experience.
@@billseiler4952 I don't deny that the LFA is the best sounding car on the planet, it was tuned by the musical department of Yamaha. Porsche on the other hand delivered a purebred sports car which happened to sound on par. But the combination of the 2nd best sounding engine plus the unparalleled driving dynamics, will make it so much more exhilarating. As they said with the 918, they got overwhelmed so that the "bad" sounding V8 didn't matter. Imagine a V10 plus the thrilling dynamics = Carrera GT ;)
@@kabob21 exactly. The LFA sound is great, but the rest of the car is sup par on performance.

The 918 Spyder truly is a once in a lifetime car. I worked at a dealership when this was being developed and I got to see internal info releases that basically saw it gain a significant amount (like hundreds) of HP as specs from the P1 and La Ferrari were released to the public. Porsche spent most of the development time on this car getting the programming right. The hardware was nailed down pretty early in the development phase. Getting the hybrid system to work with the engine seamlessly and let the car do all the ridiculous things it is able to do is truly a masterwork of engineering (cue the video of Chris Harris DRIFTING the 918 Spyder like an S14) and proves that Porsche engineers are literally the best in the whole automotive world. The tech in this car is about 10-15 years ahead of its time. It may not be the prettiest of the Holy Trinity but it is a beautiful car inside and out.
959, Carrera GT, 918...love that Porsche just throws out an absolute masterpiece ever decade or so
It’s amazing when two regular joes review incredible machinery and you hear the visceral excitement and glee. Sometimes the pros on the tv shows get so use to these cars that the sensation isn’t felt.
Thomas and James certainly aren’t regular joes when it comes to the car scene. However even with their experience in other fast cars, seeing their excitement certainly does make me smile
I'm grateful these guys are maintaining their amateur status for the car review Olympics.
@@erikwithak6555but they ACT like regular joes and that’s the difference, at least for me
Way more relatable
That's why James was cursing the way he was at 3:55.
My favorite of the "Holy Trinity" by far. Lovely sound and looks classy, while also being the fastest around a track. Such a cool car.
Same! Has always been my favorite of the Trinity. Classic, ageless design. Def a dream car of mine!
This car has 0 weaknesses. Even the engine sound is pretty good, helped in large part by that ridiculously awesome exhaust system.
And if you don't wanna hear it so much, go full electric mode. Put the roof on. Do both or neither. Advertised 3 L/100 km.
Still revs to 9000 which is more than many of its rivals can reach.
It was reality-defying and still is.
Man I watched Clarkson's review of the P1 on Spa and he made that my favorite but after watching this I'm having second thoughts. I've seen other 918 reviews from the likes of EVO, Chris Harris, Carwow, ThatDudeinBlue and even Top Gear's own review by Hammond. They really didn't sell me the 918 as that impressive even though we all know it is. But this video cemented the fact for me that's its an all time masterpiece.
I thought it was the slowest of the 3 around most tracks. Not trying to take away from it what a car 😍
@@papa_pt On the majority of tracks it's the fastest. And Porsche was the only one of the three to actually publish their Nurburgring time. McLaren claimed it was "under 7 minutes" but never gave a figure. And Ferrari never bothered timing it
The Engine itself is a masterpiece. The LMP2 RS Spyder Heart used in a road car is mega. And Fun fact. The 963 engine is based on the 918/RS Spyder engine as well.
When the Holy Trinity of hypercars 1st debuted, the 918 seemed the most pedestrian when it came to looks and everyday usability. The design has aged well, and I actually like it more now, although it would be a tough choice among all 3. They really need to channel more 918 pizzazz into the next Boxter/Cayman.
Growing up is going from thinking the P1 is the best car of the trinity to the 918
Honestly id still take the porsche

Fun fact, the engine in the 918 Spyder is now used in the 963 LeMans Hypercar:
"In late 2020, Stefan Moser, as the head engineer responsible for the Porsche 963 powertrain, and his 18-strong team opted for the 4.6-litre engine from the Porsche 918 Spyder."

I was 8 when the three hybrid supercars arrived and I immediately fell in love with the Porsche 918. It's the most sophisticated and subdued of the 3 but also the most elegant and timeless one. That doesn't mean that the P1 and LF aren't great in their own right.

Watching two relatively jaded car reviewers be turned nearly speechless by the performance of a car is such a fun thing to watch. Same with Top Gear when they reviewed the trio - they were all just shocked be the performance gap that had been created.

This car has always been #1 on my dream car list, and I was NOT expecting to see a review of it from my favorite channel. Everything from the sound, the motors, the engineering, it's the perfect car imo. I have never ever in my life liked the designs of Porsches, they have always reminded my of just sporty VW Bugs... but this one has become my favorite looking car of all time. It just looks so freaking good. The front end is perfection and the rear is exotic. I wish I could drive one.
Not sure why I didn't watch this when it came out but man, did I miss a great episode. The reactions from start, from both James and Thomas were pure, unadulterated joy and amazement. Excellent work as always, boys!
When these cars were released I was super excited to see the future of 'performance' hybrids but we haven't really seen ones that have been this crazy or well designed.
So far its been a balance between sacrificing power for practicality but I always hold out hope that we hit the levels of performance hybrids that these cars pioneered. The 918 holds a very special place in my heart, it's toppled my long desire for a Carrera GT, it's destroyed my Italian Supercar wishes, that 918 Spyder is seriously one of the greats and to remember that its only from 2015 terrifies me in the best way possible. Thank you Throttle House for reviewing it and showing the true feeling behind this Titan of a car!

Congrats guys, I never thought you’d top the LFA video, but this, this just about does it. What a gorgeous car!
Wonderful job guys like always knocked it out of the park with the review and I was excited watching and wish I was there to feel the acceleration and I would be cussing up a storm too. Definitely a dream car and y’all have to find a way to review the Mclaren P1 next.
I love how much you guys showcased the sound of this beast. I feel like this is so underrated for its sound, no one talks about how damn good that V8 sounds…
like NOBODY at all, which is so bizarre!!!!!
@@donaldmokgale3123 yep. Thats cool anyway...
This guy talks such an annoying bullshit about the 918 Spyder engine sound, like "it doesn't sound good, but it sounds so evil and raw blah blah, that it sounds good again...." What a clown!
Everybody can hear very clearly the amazing sound of this 4.6 N/A engine. It is a totally unique engine sound, because it was meant for a Porsche racecar.
Unlike the quite annoying McLaren P1 V8 turbo sound, which sounds like any other McLaren 3.8 liter V8 turbo crap engine sound of their "1749 different" McLaren road car models.
Tbh the mic doesn't do it justice, it doesn't sound that good in this recording
