I use "scum socks" or "skimmer socks" for swimming pool filters, which accomplish about the same thing. They are also dirt cheap (20 for roughly $10-$12) and washable, and stretch to easily fit over most filters. By the way, I also use one on my zero-turn lawn mower air filter to keep debris and much of the dust out.

I use $2.00 fine mesh laundry bags and rubber bands. It’s worked out beautiful to catch all but the finest dusts. They are washable too! I do not work with drywall, so could not say if it would work for that. But even “plus sized nylon stockings” at dollar stores would be an even finer mesh.

A piece of heavy used thin bed sheet tied with a rubber band works like a charm: vacuum, throw dirty piece in garbage, put in new one.
In wish I would've seen this video sooner, bought 2 new filters over the summer, so I could use them immediately and not have to wait for the used one to dry, after hosing them down. Very grateful for the info. Thanks

Yes! Great product here, hope you have continued success with them I still do!
This is a great idea for people who use their vac daily or for work. I use either grade 90 or 100 cheesecloth. Super cheap. Can buy anywhere and it comes in very large pieces and you simply wash and reuse if you want, but cheap enough to throw out (and the natural cotton ones are made 'green' and are biodegradable). But you do have to cut them to size, attach them with rubber bands and such, and replace or wash often. But you can also layer them up for more filtration. It's not as good as a hepa filter, which I would definitely use if I worked with drywall or something. But for cleaning the dog hair out of my car, I like to use something as a prefilter. The texture of the cheesecloth works amazing for capturing animal hair.
Having to buy special filters for any machine costs more than the machines themselves over time. Afterall, a vacuum or even an air purifier is, simply, a motor that moves air in one direction. Simple. And filters are not rocket science either (unless we're talking about medical grade or industrial/hazardous materials). So I like these hacks. There's more important things to be spending money on than those 'specialized' filters. So thanks for the hack!

I wrap my filter with paper towels and it’s perfect. Very few particles reach the actual filter. And as dirt cheap ideas go, this one is tough to beat 😅
True, I agree it’s cheap but still having to mess with paper towels vs this, seems like not a bad investment to me for the Filterpal (as a buy it once / for life type of product IMO). Plus this works well with drywall dust, something I’m not sure if paper towels would handle. Thanks for the note!
I wonder if people understand the purpose of a pleated filter. More surface area to collect more particles. Covering the filter with a "sock" cuts down on the vacuum surface area by roughly 50 times and reduces suction and does so at a faster rate. And who throws away filters? I learned years ago to clean, wash and dry my filters. I have not purchased a new filter in my 20 years of owning a maintenance and remodeling business. But you have to do what you feel most comfortable with.

I clean my ridgid filters with a water hose and let dry overnight. I keep 4 filters. Home renovations for work so I use vac often. Use a vac bag for drywall dust.
Those are also option, easier in my opinion to just put this FilterPal on instead. Whatever works best for you! Thanks for watching
Not knowing there was more than one size years ago I fit the orange filter on the larger filter, it worked, just tricky to get it on. I recommend using the filter pal, the paper filter and a cyclonic particle separator attached to a dust collector. I have tried the orange Rigid dust separator that fits on a five gallon bucket, total fail. If you try to buy collects that fit between the vac hose and cyclonic separator, good luck. You can heat pvc sections that you can make actually fit using a heat gun and a glass salad dressing bottle to flare the mouth of the pvc piece to ease fitting the hose and cyclonic separator together. I fitted the hose to the coupling separately from cyclone, easier for me. Make some dust!!
Easy way to clean those bags is to stick the nozzle of a leaf blower into it and turn it on. Blows it clean in seconds. Can also blow dust and debri out of the filter pleats too. Just make sure you do it outside away from open windows. Makes quite a cloud.

LEAF BLOWER - 1 OF MY TOP 5 MOST IMPORTANT TOOLS TO HAVE AROUND!!!
- FYI Just thought I'd mention....Since I read how one reader uses a leaf blower to put the end into the dust bag, turn on, and blow the dust off the bag in the proper direction (out). This is just one of about 150 uses I have for a leaf blower!
- (Before the supply chain dilemma) you could pick up an ELECTRIC MID-RANGE POWERED LEAF BLOWER for about $25 - $45. Not sure now, but my point is that you don't need to spend a whole lot to have this MULTI-PURPOSE TOOL FOR CONVIENIENCE, ASSISTING IN THE LONGEVITY OF OTHER TOOLS (such as the dust bags we're talking about) AND EASE OF MANY, MANY PROJECTS AND MAINTENANCE.
- FOR EXAMPLE: blow out truck beds, open all the doors on any vehicle and blow the shit out of it (including dog hair, dust, lint, floor mats, dried mud, etc.), drying off water drops on anything you just washed, cleaning out rugs & mats, blow sawdust off a whole layer of firewood, blow a layer of snow off anything, clean out flower/vegetable gardens for the new planting, cobwebs, sidewalks, front stoop, JUST BLOWING OFF ANYTHING RATHER THAN SWEEPING, WASHING, REPLACING, or DRAGGING YOUR MESS INTO / ONTO ANYTHING (including blowing leaves)!
- I have an electric leaf blower (of different powers) connected to designated electrical cords of different lengths AND PLUGGED IN at: my front door area, my back door / sun porch area, inside attached garage (one side of house area), and the big shop (in the far back yard - on a LONG cord). Cords are casually wound up and hung on one of those cheap ($2) garden hose retainers. When I buy one of these cheaper blowers I also buy the inexpensive Warranty offered by Amazon. (I.E. $4-5 for 3 years, etc.)
- SO, JUST THOUGHT I'D SHARE. I HAVE PLENTY OF OTHER THINGS TO DO AROUND THE HOME-FRONT AND ANYTHING THE LEAF BLOWERS CAN AID IN IS EFFORT I CAN USE ELSEWHERE. Cheers!!!
Hi Tina. Thanks for adding your suggestions for leaf blowers. I also use them to blow the dust off of and out of my table saw, router table, and handheld power tools for woodworking. They also work great for blowing out your garage or shed if you have one with variable speed. I also use them to blow excess water off my vehicle after washing, then follow up with a microfiber towel to finish. I also have an attachment for blowing leaves and debris out of the gutters while standing safely on the ground. These attachments are available for both electric and gas-powered units. There are also videos on CZcams how to construct from PVC pipe.

Thanks for the video. I was thinking that you might want to invest in another small shop vac to clean the mess made in your larger shop vac. Instead of shaking the filter and the filter pal, this might prevent all the harmful dust flying around when you clean them. Also consider using a shop vac vacuum bag. This also would be a healthier option, as opposed to dumping the dirt in a plastic trash bag. I’m really glad you made this video. It makes me even more aware of the health risks of not being careful of all the dust, and of course keeping my shop vac running longer. Which reminds me of another thing to consider, which is to clean your shop vac and filter more frequently?

I finally know the difference between orange and green! The green one still looked a bit large on that filter. I think it was a hair bit too large and the sagging allowed dirt to get past.

@@TheToughGuysTV I went to the Amazon site to buy but could not tell which size to buy for the smaller 4.5 or 3 gallon size Rigid shop vacs. It was not clear. So filterpal 1 is for the smaller cartridges.
Put a rubber band around the top to seal it 0ff !
I been using panty hose on my filters with success. But decided to try something new. I cut the bottoms off some old pants, zip tied the bottom and tucked in the top portion. So far, I'm lov 'in it. Think I'll head over to Goodwill next and look for some big legged pants to cut off. For 4 or 5 bucks you can get two filters out of one pair of trousers.
Does it reduce suction power? Or make the motor hot?

I agree these will extend the life of the filter. However you can see that not only can you get an area that does not seal it of resulting is the filter getting contaminated. While not as cheap IMO a filter bag will be your best bet.
1 you just throw the entire bag away keeping most of the debris in the bag at the same time protecting the filter more effectively. Also keeps the vac container much cleaner making less work .
Don't Rigid vacuums have a foam sleeve or paper filter that goes over the cartridge filter?
These comments are so rude. Thank you for the review :) I was actually thinking about sewing a cap or something to my newly acquired vacuum (it's not like this one but one of those 3 in 1 stick models) to not be buying so many expensive filters that are basically just plastic with fabric glued to the rim. These bags seem to actually work nice, so if I fail or get lazy I might get one :)

Personally I been using shop vac bags... but with larger amounts of dust those do fill up quickly. Especially when running something like planet or a router that generates larger chips
At some point I might need to sacrifice some space for a cyclone or a full blown dust collector... but in meantime that little bag should be a good alternative.
It’s definitely a great solution, and for us it’s awesome. Having a full on dust collection vac system is obviously the pinnacle but for most garage shops, that’s not an economic option. These filterpals keep me from buying new filters and let my vac run perfectly while doing so - I’m set! Thanks for checking out the video!

Don't know anything about the original inventor, have to take your word for it.
put the bag on before installing the filter, to stop the air leak at the top of the filter. Let the elastic encompass the top of the filter.

This type also work in the new house hold vacuums. I don't like washing the foam filter.

I like the FilterPal but I wish their nametag was on the END of the bag instead of the side: that's 2 square inches where NO AIR PASSES! My vac is similar to yours: the hose enters the lid so I cannot use filter bags.
Pool Sock over the filter and also use it on my G660 Chainsaw over the air filter. 20 socks in one order lasts more than a year.

Great question, I don’t notice a difference but to be totally fair I’ve never hooked it up to any device that could accurately tell me if there’s a reduced amount of suction. I feel like the vac operates well / the same when it’s packed up or fresh with the filter pal on it. Thanks for reaching out! 🙏🏻

Are the filterpals meant to be used with a dustbag inserted or without? Doesn't using an interior dustbag keep the filter and the interior fairly clean? I'm not quite getting why this product is valuable, unless you hate using interior dust bags (which make clean-up so easy).
I don't think you'd use this with a bag, it goes over the filter itself. If you're using a bag, that would be where your dust / debris goes already.

It’s the “do it for her” sign above his bench. Homer had a sign at his work that said, “don’t forget you’re here forever” and Homer took pics of Maggie and covered up the letters to make that sign.
Great idea.. but never touch the filter device with a brush.. doing this decreases life of the filter…I tap the hard end of the filter to remove dust..☺️

I’ve seen a lot about using paper towels, never tried that personally. Could be a solution, but it’s just easier to me to buy a FilterPal one time, and just keeping using it forever.
Use a vacuum bag. Your filter is not intended to be used without a bag unless wet

Yea they work but you end up cleaning the filter everu time you go to use the shop vac if your vacuuming up anything dusty.. and those things tend to get the crusties on it and a simple shake wont cut it sonetimes and gotta wash it out then dry it..

And you did not drag dirt on the filter it was there because the new bag dropped down.
I would clean it much more often it would work better.
It seems far too long and not tight enough mostly on the top.
I think if you want to take your video to the next level you need to invest in making some simple test rig that can show performance differences. Making CFM testing with clear tubing and dyed water is pretty straightforward. This way you could show how it performs against two controls: with and without the cover both new and with and without the cover full of gunk.
why did he throw that dirty filter away? yikes! He says even if you clean it by brushing, compressed air, etc. “it’ll never be the same as a new fresh one”. Yes, but adding the sock bag creates as much air flow restriction and added pressure on the motor as a slight amount of debris left on a filter that you brush off and blow off with your leaf blower or compressed air. He’s got as much dust he’s generating by hand with the bag (and even washing it) as you would using a whisk broom on the dirty filter and blasting it outside with a leaf blower or compressed air gun.

I normally just knock the dust off then right back in but they are advertised (or used to be) that you could machine wash. 🤷🏼♂️
Won't this make the vacuum motor work harder?
I don’t think any harder than a super clogged filter would. I don’t have any way to test that out of course, but I can say my Ridgid vacs are 6 yrs old and 4 yrs old, both of them still working great.

Cyclone dust collector is good for sawdust. But true test is Drywall Dust.
I've been wanting to try drywall dust, it is truly the great equalizer. Stuff is horrible for most dust collection filter systems.

I've been using the big Ridgid vac for about 5 years for most things but mainly for vacuum sanding drywall. I made a small cart out of 1" x 1" aluminum to hold the machine and a 5 gallon mud bucket with cyclone. I use a Cleanstream filter and a bag. I tape all the stress points and seams on the bag when it's new with Gorilla Tape. I get about a year out of a bag and I'm still on the first filter. I use this machine for work as a drywall finisher so it gets used almost daily for sanding.

It's not a rip-off, it is a tool. If you don't want it, don't buy it.
Why not make your own vid about why you think it is a rip-off and show how you make your own.
I agree with Phil, its a piece of polartec fleece with an small elastic strap. you could buy a cheep fleece blanket ($10-$15), cut a few of them up to size and use some elastic cord and ShaZam, you have several pre filters, and they'll last longer then the paper towel trick. At $33 its a lot for something simple thats why he thinks its a ripoff, no offence, its a good idea just too much money for what it is.

@@Kooshad1 you can find fleece blankets in the thrift store for a couple bucks at the most. Who cares what the patterns are…they would work great and last years.

I’ll just stick to my method of tapping out the big stuff then with the same vac with filter removed i just go outside and put the hose on the blow side, put on some glasses. And a breather and blow out a dust cloud out on the yard.. my neighbors are assholes and have done some messed up things to my place so i feel good when it coats their cars in a good layer of dust.. funny to see em pull out afterwards and have to use the windshield wipers to see.. lol.. everytime they leave their dogs business in my yard for the kids to find, i leave my shop dust on their cars.. mmhmm.. justice..
LOL! I'll keep that in mind for my neighbor that drains his downspouts into MY yard.
BETTER OFF JUST USING FILTER BAGS. THERE'S NO WAY ALL THAT JUNK GETTING ON THE FILTER COVER OR JUST THE FILTER ITSELF ISN'T GOING TO QUICKLY CLOG AND SEVERELY REDUCE THE SUCTION. IF YOUR O.K. WITH THAT YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUST NEVER CLEAN OR REPLACE YOUR FILTER.
A lot of assumptions here. I’ve been using these for years, and still with the same vacs. No issue I can see with suction and both vacs still run well. I am also not buying filters. I think it boils down - do whatever you think is best. ✌️

Those things look like regular felt material with a bit of elastic sewn in. Like 50 cents worth of felt... but they cost $17??? Sucker born every minute I guess!

@@TheToughGuysTV ignore these rude people. You really helped me as I just bought a 3 gal. Box style Rigid shop vac (I also have the bigger rectangular box RIGID but use their paper bags), the smaller vac NEEDS this! I will not go through cleaning the paper filters like I just went through ever again. Thank you SO MUCH. It looks like regular fleece material I could sew up, but will buy one to try it out.

@@Renaldo015 there is a fast forward button on your you tube screen. There is also wide variety in controlling playback speeds. Between the two options, you should have a less frustrating time. Also, we cannot complain for all the free info and advice these valuable videos give. I am grateful for all of them.

I use the size 1 and 1/0 Mustad hooks to freeline for snook czcams.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 and they have been fantastic. The points are super sharp, and the hook is small enough to blend with my baitfish, yet large enough to land fish 30" or more. I also use these hooks when I'm pier or surf fishing with my kids. They tend to catch tons of smaller snapper, whiting, and catfish, and we get far fewer gut hooks with these Mustad in-lines, which means more of them survive after release. I was actually using these hooks when I caught my friend too, but I think that had more to do with the bait I was using ;-)
