    • @DUKE_of_RAMBLE
      @DUKE_of_RAMBLE Před 2 měsíci +38

      Yea, as Solar pointed out, I was about to say that they have to legitimately be fierce given they cohabitate with the likes of jaguars and multiple species of caiman!
      Which I figure at some point in history, the multiple piranha species also must've played a part in natural selection, leading to only the biggest otters surviving. _(some species get to be multiple pounds in size, not like the tiny pet store ones we see)_
      Our NA counterparts would no doubt become fish food in those waters lol

    It’s funny that Maya mentions being sacred of the giant river otters. In the Amazon survivorman episode, one of the waorani guides told Les to stay away from the giant river otters, citing that other than a jaguar they may be the most dangerous thing you run into

      Well, the natives call the giant otters "river jaguar", so yeah, they are indeed dangerous. Just to put things into perspective of their game, they usually feed on anacondas and caymans, which is fair to say not many other species are capable of doing.

    The ant in the start of the video is a Saúva or leaf-cutter ant. They are very common in most of Brazil. You often see perfect little trails in the ground of fields or forests made by them. They are farmers, using the vegetation that they gather to feed the fungus in their colonies, which is their actual food.
    Also, the winged male is called Tanajura and it's butt is a delicacy, often cooked with rice or farofa, a coarse flour made from cassava

    My brain:
    "How do you bottle feed Manta Rays?"

    • @chrisgullett4332
      @chrisgullett4332 Před měsícem

      You would not bottle feed a manta ray, because it is not a mammal. Only mammals breastfeed. Whales, dolphins, otters etc all breastfeed, because they're mammals. Yes that is correct, whales and dolphins do breastfeed. Fish do not breastfeed, marine mammals do. Polar bears and otters are also marine animals. Polar bears and otters are the only two marine mammals that are usually born on land, but spend most of their time in water. Yes a polar bear is a marine mammal, not a land mammal. Polar bears are not like other bears. Other bears are land mammals and eat very little meat, polar bears are marine mammals and eat only meat. You did read that correctly, bears besides polar bears eat very little meat. Bears eat around 5% meat, and 95% fruit and insects. They eat so little meat that they just barely meet the requirements to be classified as omnivores. Bears mostly eat fruit and plants, and they only eat meat to fatten up for hibernation. The average bear eats like 30 thousand berries per day, and will only eat meat during a small period of the year.

Funny that as you were talking about how big and scary they are at the start, I was thinking how they could almost be compared to big cats, and then you said something about a video of those otters scaring and chasing away jaguars. Makes sense. Those things are huge, and thick, and JACKED. I wouldn't want to come across one in the wild, either. And, I think otters are some of the cutest animals in the world.

    The babies in the pools are absolutely flingin' flanging adorable. As was the Wiggle Bug you got distracted by at the beginning. So many amazing animals in South America, awesome they are doing the work they are of course. Our relationship with wildlife, especially places like the amazon, if so much more complicated than many realize I think - much more than just "we deforest/take from wild" or the opposite, though I do think humans do more good for wildlife than we think, given how much the negative stands out and gets attention (as it should.) Anyway, awesome video, awesome animals, awesome awesomeness!!!
