  • A Tribute to
    ALICIA DE LARROCHA
    (23 May 1923 - 25 September 2009)
    ~ 91st Anniversary of the Birth of the Legendary Pianist ~
    Alicia de Larrocha was born on 23 May 1923 to a musical family, studied piano with Frank Marshall at the age of three. She made her debut at the age of 5, performed her first piano concerto the following year, made her first recording at age 9, and was a soloist with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra at 11. This child prodigy then started to tour Europe and North America with sold-out performances. Although de Larrocha was less than 5 feet tall and had unusually small hands for a piano virtuoso, she managed to champion all the big piano concertos, such as those by Brahms and Rachmaninov. De Larrocha was also famous for her marvelous interpretation of Mozart and Schumann, but her greatest contribution as a musician has been her unrivalled advocacy of Spanish piano music.
    Over the years, de Larrocha was awarded numerous prizes for her recordings, including four Grammies. After some 4,000 concerts around the world, she eventually retired in 2003. She died on 25 September 2009 in Barcelona, Spain, aged 86. Reuters called her "the greatest Spanish pianist in history", while Time regarded her as "one of the world's most outstanding pianists".

    Estimada Alicia, que Dios te tenga en su gloria, en 2002 tuve ocasión de asistir a uno de tus conciertos para luego en tu camerino, amablemente me dedicaste un autógrafo muy cálido en mi cd doble de tus obras españolas, Granadosm Monpou y Montsalvatge. Recuerdo que te comenté que me gustaba Mozart y su concierto Nº 21 para piano y orquesta y tu merespondiste: "Ah, el K-467" recordabas perfectamente en nº de opus, recuerdo también que le pregunté a tu ayuda de cámara, pues eras ya una señora de avanzada edad, si el papel que había visto sobre el piano era una chuleta por si te fallaba la memoria, la ayuda me contestó que era un clinex para secarte los ojos, naturalmente que tú tocabas sin partitura. Gracias por descubrirme la magia de la música.

    Maravilloso tributo a esta inmensa pianista del siglo XX! A propósito, sorpresa la mía cuando leí que su marido era de apellido Torrá, el mismo de la violinista virtuosa de mi ciudad de origen español de principios del s. XX que dio nombre a la escuela de música donde estudié, Celia Torrá y trascendió con su arte. Saludos en la música desde Concepción del Uruguay, Entre Ríos, Argentina.

    Tkhx lisilisin for this wonderful tribute! It shows the enormous repertoire she played during her long career. Her sound, voicing and timing: it is unique! And I do like her Mozart so much!! By the way, on the 23rd May she was remembered on Dutch Radio IV. I heard a Scarlatti Sonata while listenig to the radio in my car.and the reporter mentioned it was AdL. and that it was her birthday and she became famous playing Spanish Pianoworks of many composers, but too that she played all the other composers equally well! As we can hear in this tribute.

      @lisilisin Před 10 lety +2

      Dear pghagen, I don't have anything to do with this wonderful tribute... Someone else is the responsable of the "AdL Chanel" to whom I'm very grateful for everything he publishes!!!

      Dear Lisilisin, As I am now listening again to this wonderful tribute about your mother again I just discovered your answer to me. I always thought you was responsible for the AdL channel. I am so sorry that I misunderstood this. I am happy to discover a lot of stories about AdL are now translated into English as my Spanish is bad and my Catalan even worse.😥

    I just now noticed what she does at 6:22 and following. She doesn't do a double shake in the right hand, but does the trill with 2 and 3 while playing a repeating note with the thumb. This might seem a trivial observation to very experienced or professional pianists, but it is a delightful revelation for me. I will be able to do that and it will add to my pleasure of the piece.

    And I must say: I adore her in alomost every repertoire, except in Mozart, where she just sounds too heavy. When she's an artist in Mozart, someone like Uchida is just a magician...

    • @poechopin
      @poechopin Před 8 lety +2

      I think she's better than Uchida in the Mozart Fantasia K 475.

    • @Janaceks_Dad
      @Janaceks_Dad Před 4 lety +1

      More likely the heaviness has more to do with the recording than her playing...she was an outstanding Mozart pianist, but she wasn't always served well by the engineers at Decca and RCA.
