  • This video goes over each step IN DETAIL. Rescreening a window screen is easy - a total beginner can rescreen and reinstall a window screen in 10 minutes. Follow along with my tutorial and you could save yourself hundreds of dollars swapping your own screens out versus taking them in to the hardware store!
    Steps involved:
    1. Remove the spline (the nylon cord) from the window screen frame using a screwdriver or other tool. If the spline looks to be in good shape, you can reuse it!
    2. Take the old window screen off the frame by pushing on it until it comes off.
    3. Roll the new window screen across the frame, leaving at least 2-3 inches on each side. If you don't have at least a couple inches, rolling the new spline is going to end with you having spots where you don't have any screen left! Note: Don't worry about making sure the screen is super tight through this process - it just breaks easier that way.
    4. Using your screen tool, use the smooth side to one side of the screen into the groove.
    5. Using your screen tool, use the side that forms to the spline (concave side) to force the spline into the groove and then roll the spline into place across the groove along each side, repeating step 5 and 6 for each. Note: GO SLOW the first time you do this and figure out the best method that works for you! If you go to fast, you may break the screen.
    7. Using a utility knife, make a 45 degree angle facing AWAY from the center of the screen and cut the excess fiberglass screen material off the frame.
    8. Hang it up and give yourself a pat on the back, you did it! See, replacing a window screen is easy. :)

    Thank you, Melissa! Nice to see a young woman like yourself showing women and men skills for DIY projects. I watched your video to refresh my memory for a screen I have. 6-7 years ago I replaced all the house screens before selling it. And you have a very pleasing way of presenting. Blessings to you.

    This video was the absolute BEST! I have spent all morning getting the screens too tight and crooked. I should have just stooped after the first screen and gone to You Tube!!! This advise worked great!

    Thank you Melissa for a clear and detailed explanation on screen replacement. I especially liked your explanation on the specific purpose of each wheel on the screen/spline roller. Since I never replaced a screen before, I will now be replacing 11 porch screens (5ft X 4ft each) due to the severe weather we recently had in upstate New York. Thanks again for your clear instructions and all the best to you.

    Thanks for sharing, unfortunately my screen frames were poorly sized when our house was built - so I have to enlarge our existing frames with some precise gluing of the corner joints.

    Please don’t use old spline as it hardens and cracks.
    Making it harder to remove next time, also once the spline is in there cold, hot, sunlight, it’s molded for the frame, when you put it back in it will never be the same.
    She cuts the excess as you can see.
    You want screen tight to keep the wind from moving it.

    • @jackostergaard4624
      @jackostergaard4624 Před 3 lety

      Love the hint of doing a opposite side first to control screen tension. Also spline comes in several sizes. Need to use the right size. Too small doesn't stay in groove. Too large doesn't fit. Right size makes for an easy project

    • @philamburgey
      @philamburgey Před 3 lety

      @@jackostergaard4624 Yes, spline does come in different sizes, but the newer foam spline, you can go one size bigger, and it will still fit and keep the screen in tighter.
      I never do the opposite side, though; I start at one corner and workaround.
      But there is more than one way to skin a cat.
