After watching many of your reviews I've reached my tipping point where I simply must compliment you for how fantastically articulate you are. Your takes are so insightful, well structured and sophisticated. Wonderful, top notch analytical exposition.
Very intelligent and nuanced takes.. I don't even watch most of these movies, I still listen to it in the background..
"I've reached my tipping point"
we gotta get you laid my dude
@@lukess.s fine by me!
I love how Gaga did all of this press saying "House of Gucci is the single most challenging thing I've ever done. Up was down. Black was white. Men were made and broken in a single moment." Then you watch the movie & it's two hours of her being like "I makea da pizza!"
XD...same
😂😂😂😂
Very correct 😂😂😂
@San Patricio's Space Dolphin Brigada She needs to keep.makingusoc and stop acting altogether! Her campaign to get an Oscar nomination was pure entitlement and vanity.
😆😅🤣😂😆😅🤣😂
"This is your uncle drunk at a wedding doing a bad Mario impression"had me rolling on the floor lol...
my dislike for house of gucci came down to the simple fact that it just wasn’t camp enough. there’s a specific kind of cringe here that has to be taken way overboard to be manageable and the fact that it didn’t just made it painful for me. as i’ve said before, the last duel absolutely deserved the attention that this got and i hope you can get around to it soon. felt a bit like a return to form for ridley to me and some of the acting was actually fascinating to catch on rewatch. highly recommend it!… house of gucci though, i do not.
Completely agree on having a DePalma or Verhoeven take on this type of story. Lots of potential that just didn’t seize on the opportunities it had in story and key characters alone.
From what I've heard from my Italian friends, Jared Leto performance was actually not bad. They all have Italian uncle or family who kinda speaks like Leto's character. On the other hand, the real Paolo Gucci doesn't speak like the character portrayed in the movie. So it's totally bizarre.
Exactly
Leto is always in it for himself
Jared Leto honestly gave his best performance since Dallas Buyers Club, I really felt for his character since he was such an idiot.
Well now that i hear Leto is in this, as well as Adam Driver i will have to give this a watch.
LEGO’s phone conversation about his needing a shower was hysterical
I saw this film in the theater with a light crowd and I think that enhanced my viewing of the film. Jared Leto had everyone rolling with his performance.
He was better than everyone in the film other than Jack Huston. I have a couple of those kinds of guys in my Croatian family and Italian friends I know do too, I've met them. And I'm a huge Jeremy irons fan but I unfortunately have to admit irons and the rest were horrible.
I was expecting House of Gucci to have an actual film score! Angelo Badalementi or even Danny Elfman could have done wonders with a score that actually fits the theme of the film
Great review! You mentioned Baz Luhrmann. I'd be interested to see what you think about his films. I personally love Strictly Ballroom. The camp and quirky Australian humour placed over a classic fairytale.
I was so happy that i watched The Last Duel over this and oh boy its a film that i will never forget.
Great review Maggie and take care and stay safe 👍.
Any chance I can donate to you on patron? If so, is there any chance I can suggest movies for you to watch and review if I pay on a certain tier?
House of Gucci could have been a good film, if it was written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino and actually starring Italian actors.
Jared Leto is so bad that the whole theatre laughed histerically
He was better than everyone in the film other than Jack Huston. I have a couple of those kinds of guys in my Croatian family and Italian friends I know do too, I've met them. And I'm a huge Jeremy irons fan but I unfortunately have to admit irons and the rest were horrible.
He overacts so much in movies, I do not enjoy the majority of his performances.
Leto has always been a bad actor. Even during his My So Called Life days LOL
@@darnellmajor9016 Let's pray for Morbius were Leto has to bascially carry the entire Film
@@ac14cmpunk25 oh dear 😆
Honestly I loved it, I just had a lot of fun with it, as well I really like Ridley's filmmaking in general. I'm not sure how much it works as a drama, but I enjoyed it a lot nonetheless. It was very funny.
Oh how I’ve been anticipating this review.
Nailed it! De Palma and Verhoeven would definitely have created a more interesting movie. Everything felt so flat and grey. Not terrible but pretty boring considering the subject matter.
Huh, I swear I just watched 40 mins and didn’t know they were going for camp. I’m gona try to finish it tomorrow night, thanks for the review, it’s refreshing and interesting perspective compare the big established CZcams reviewers.
It wasn’t supposed to be camp, it was supposed to win award nominations
I thought it was a decent movie.
I haven't seen this film yet, but I agree with you that Verhoven or DePalma would have been perfect for this sort of material. Ridley can be a bit over stylized at times, and it doesn't always work. Same with Michael Mann. I dig both these directors, but it would be a perfect story for Verhoven or DePalma. There is no place for pretentious minimalism or deep contemplation in a story like this. Camp is necessary.
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be considering the reception. 'The Last Duel' was way better though. As a massive Jeremy Irons fan I'm sad to say most of the main cast, including him were horrible. The only 2 good performances were Jack Huston and believe it or not I'm going to say Jared Leto. Growing up around Italian families I've met several of those uncles. As someone who is Croatian and the part of Croatia very heavily influenced by Italian culture, I have a family member exactly like the character Leto portrayed.
I think this was one of the worst film I've seen on the big screen in 2021.
And The Last Duel was the best film of 2021.
CZcamsr John Campea said that his uncle is exactly like Jared Leto’s character and that most Non-Italians won’t believe it.
I'm glad I don't know his uncle.
@@deepfocuslens Absolutely! I wouldn’t be able to stop laughing. 😆
You gotta check out Memoria, the worst person in the world, the souvenir part 2, parallel mothers, drive my car, nightmare alley, red rocket, the lost daughter!
why?
Just red rocket and drive my car are must-watches
I've been avoiding this film, as I'm not convinced I'd enjoy watching it in any way. But, sad to say, your reaction to Jared Leto's bad performance makes me very curious now. So, thanks for that. Haha
You are an amazing reviewer lady. Would be cool to see you do review collaborations with other channels like Chris Stuckmann or John Campea. You bring a lot to the table thumbs up.
You needn't wine this time 🤣
Now you have me wanting Brian de Palma's House of Gucci! It also makes me wonder what Brian de Palma and Jared Leto would be like working together.
That might be an interesting topic, take a movie and replace the director with another director, and why. Or a dream pairing a Director and Actor/Actress.
A director like De Palma would work with a completely different cast lol
Speaking of playing a big part of a supposedly "small" role, and speaking of "slipping in and out of accent"...
it would be awesome, Maggie, for you to comment on "Red Sparrow" (2018), where you'll find Jeremy Irons fulfilling the former, and Jennifer Lawrence doing the latter!
I'd like to hear your thoughts on Paul Verhoeven's Benedetta.
It’s been interesting to see Verhoeven trying different things with his more recent films. I haven’t gotten to check out Benedetta yet though. What did you think of it?
@@Myhighconstitution I think it was a fantastic film, brilliantly acted. THAT is the kind of bold and risky that you don't see in Hollywood anymore.
@@ANDREVILAFRANCA I’ll definitely be checking it out then. I loved Verhoeven’s Black Book and his last movie Elle was a really gutsy, different kind of film too. He’s had such an interesting and nuanced career as a filmmaker.
I love one of the main actresses, Daphne Patakia, who I first saw in the series "Versailles" (2015-2018)!
"Interesting is a strong word." Haha.
You should do your review of The Last Duel
I’d be interested to hear what you think of ‘the worst person in the world’- it really surprised me honestly
You're the only critic I trust.
Oooh boy, this movie. I made the mistake of blind buying House of Gucci. When it came out the reviews were mixed but some people I knew went and saw it and enjoyed it so I decided to blind buy it. Sat here at home watching it and maybe 15-20 mins in, I glanced over at the case and said to myself, “I just wasted 30 dollars”.
Watched the rirst hour of it and then just stopped. Aside for Leto's bad performance it just wasn't that interesting and it just felt awkward in most scenes. Lady Gaga was good though.
Yes, give the people what they want: Gaga/Hayek lip-locking action.
I thought Lady GG did a good job of looking more and more unhinged in the eyes and her hair and costumery, but I agree that's not enough to make the whole film as over the top as it should've been. I was waiting for Pacino to have his "HOO AH!" moment and was not disappointed-So at least we got that. (Not that I really wanted that, mind you.)
You really love leaning on that bookshelf huh
I'm lazy.
Dying to hear your thoughts on Euphoria, Sam Levinson and Assassination Nation aka the unofficial action movie pilot for Euphoria
As you’re a fan of anime, it would be good to hear your take on the live action Death Note movie :)
PLEASE REVIEW I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978)
One of the worst films I have seen. The Editing is terrible, the writing is bad and the movie isn't even fun, it's boring. I expected campy fun, I got dull.
when I saw the preview something told me it would be dreadful
Actually, Lady Gaga does not at all respect Patricia. She refused to even meet with her for this role.
I mean more a respect for honoring the personality and character. Even if you are an actor playing a hated historical dictator...there needs to be an understanding of the character in a human sense, in order to be successful. I think she does have a certain respect for that. If she didn't...she would have played the ending with a lot more coldness. I think she recognizes that Patricia is a human, with traces of love in her heart....but unfortunately she more a corrupt woman than a heartfelt woman.
Walked out during the sex scene.
Luhrmann would have been a much better choice. I enjoyed Leto, but he probably belongs in a Terry Gilliam movie.
Netflix's Texas Chainsaw Massacre and now this. Lovely start to the year.
Cool review!
Suggest that you watch & review “King Richard” ... 🎾
Best ever chance for Will Smith to nab a Lead Actor Oscar ... 🎗
Hey did u go to film school?
Leto keeps on acting & acting & acting.
Yes, Baz Luhrman films are very camp or something. I can't enjoy them. Even The Get Down, a subject or culture I know a bit of and enjoy didnt do it for me.
I haven't watched House of Gucci yet. I'll stream it if it ends up on Netflix or something.
Interesting critique. I watched your assessment of Texas Chainsaw Massacre which was spot on. I cannot recommend that film to anyone. It was so poor.
I'll still give House of Gucci a go but going in with extremely low expectations.
I found this movie to be sort of aimless and boring.
That's the best description of the second half. It was so bland that when he gets shot in the end, I felt - meh.
Anna Biller should tell this story
Martin Scorsese should have done the house of Gucci it would have been a masterpiece 😢
De Palma is a great choice. Very few of his films have zero knowing silliness at all. (Even something more po-faced like _The Untouchables_ has a hilarious pan to reveal a child in it.)
Drive My Car review ???
So you are only one Patreon away from buying a light?
Movie was ass, The last duel though, his best since gladiator imo
No wine for this?
Jared Leto is a grotesque hack and this film proves it. He was the worst part in Blade Runner 2049 too.
The color grading was terrible 😩😩 I could not get past it like this was a movie about fashion drama murder love that looked like a 2012 dystopian teen movie
I took a girl i like to see this in theatres so if i didnt i probably would not have enjoyed this film as much as i did 😅
I can't she did that accent the whole movie, and nobody told her how bad it was!! She sounded like she was from Transylvania...
For the last two decades Ridley Scott has used rather ugly color pallets in his film, with all the life of wet concrete. This sort of story is like Bonfire of the Vanities. Yeah, DePalma made that one, but the problem was not the director, it was the script. Tom Wolfe's 1987 novel, which I recommend, is very over the top. That had to be there. The issue with the film was that it was built with a very lousy script.
The Last Duel looked very good, one of the best cinematography of the year.
Went in expecting to really dislike the film and ended up loving it. Captured the atmosphere and tone of the 80s perfectly. Brought me into some deep nostalgia.
From the trailer alone, I didn't want to watch it. The clothing looked cheap from a film called House of Gucci. Make the clothes look expensive. So it just looked like they were not even trying to make something lavish and gaudy with the clothes looking really super cheap.
10:48 is what you are here for
Why didn't she review "The Last Duel" instead 😑😑
I think realized that ridley scott is not a good director. (Minus alien which is a masterpiece) He takes A list screenplays and actors and everything else and just lets it make his job easy.
All you have to say is Jared Leto is in a film to make me never want to watch it.
I didnt like Leto's performance at all. He kept saying "Boof"...its "uff"...Uffa...not BOOF. lol And his accent sounded a bit Borat-ish to me.
House of feminism
Scott is the wrong director for this type of film. He does not have a feel for comedies
🙏🙏🙏
Completely disagree, this story should’ve been nowhere near campy. Should’ve had a Sopranos/Breaking Bad tone. Considering this story deals with real people that only happened 25 years ago
I wasn't interested in this story before I watched the film, and then the editing really solidified my negative views toward it.
Ya this movie should have been 3 hours at least. It felt like they just cut out sooooo much.
@@crobeastness nah bruh, I meant it should've been like under 2 hours lol
@@slobonmyfilmsnob lol
From the start,. a real trainwreck, not worth my wasted 3 hours.... the translation to the audience, was lost, I think sadly he has been smoking his dead brother Tony's ashes, really horrible film, Lady GG what a joke, and Jared Leto was like lost in direction extremely bizarre and not in a good way.
Nicholas Cage would have killed it in Leto’s part.
I still don’t get why they couldn’t have hired actual Italian actors? so stupid
No offence but i severely struggled with this movie. De Palma would have done way better than Scott. Scott looked like he ran out of ideas. The accents were very bad too
u are so fit
Jared Leto's performance is absolutely horrendous along with his accent and his make up its like he is doing a parody of Italians in this movie............
This movie couldn't AFFORD to be anymore souless. Entertaining at times but so empty. Jared Leto was the only "interesting" character.
Not enough character development. Empty , boring , sucked!
