My wife and i were impressed by how clean Idaho falls was, is Pocatello the same. We are looking to move from Missoula mt and want a more conservative place to raise our kids, buying a house here is now also out of reach for us.

Fun video. Have you lived in Pocatello? Using the census metro statistical area populations gives a much more accurate view of how the population actually feels. Idaho falls: 160,000. Pocatello: 90,000
Grew up in Idaho falls, now lived in Pocatello several years and am raising my family and building my business here. Ultimately settled on Pocatello for the access to the trails. I love to hike and bike and trail run. Can’t beat this place. You’ve got it within 4 minutes on three of four sides! Hundreds of miles and endless variety.
I also actually enjoy the more blue collar feel of Pocatello. It’s kinda fun in my opinion. Leads to a little more crime but still very safe compared to bigger cities I’ve lived in (Omaha, Kansas City, Buffalo).
Idaho falls has grown a ton and is similar in crime now, as well as I just read a study that showed that the percentage of the population that is Latter Day Saint is now about equal between the two. It was published by desert news if you want to read it. I’ll see if I can find the link.
I would argue that even though Pocatello is smaller it actually feels like there are a lot more resources because of the university, access to major interstates, and existence of roughly the same amount of shopping centers. The university adds tons of cultural opportunities and economic stimulus.
IF certainly has a better airport, no question there. But Pocatello has twice daily flights to salt lake now and is only a 1 hour 40 minute drive to the terminal at Salt Lake City which is not bad.
Pocatello is a little closer to pebble creek ski resort than IF is to Kelly canyon, and pebble is a little nicer. But both are good and close enough.
The temperature is different though not so much as you said. I’ve found it’s usually about 3-7 degrees warmer in Pocatello. That can make a pretty good difference in the dead of summer or dead of winter though.
We used to talk so much trash on Pocatello when I grew up in IF. Now that I live here I can’t believe how awesome it is.
Overall they are very similar and I love them both for different reasons. Even though I grew up in Ammon, Pocatello has my heart. In either case, southeast Idaho is the promised land and you can’t convince me otherwise!

I moved from Idaho Falls to Pocatello within the last several years. Pocatello is now on track to add many more jobs; and BOTH areas are now overcrowded with housing costs escalating greatly. Major retailers are also incoming with TARGET soon; COSTCO and Walmart, already here. There does exist a mall, similar to Idaho Falls' Teton Mall; but, Simon Properties now plans to tear-down and renovate the entire area over the next several years. Pocatello is also an approximate hour closer to Salt Lake City, Twin Falls, and Boise. Weather differences are also influenced by elevation; proximity to mountain ranges. Pocatello IS warmer, which means less snow than Idaho Falls during winter, generally.
Frankly, many workers from Pocatello daily commute to Idaho Falls and vice versa. SE Idaho truly is one large area with numerous smaller townships in-between the more dominant, known cities. (-Fwiw, I have lived at many major urban cities before my retirement.)
Comparisons are frequently silly: Here, better and safer schools; safe neighborhoods; low crime; fiber optic Internet services; a National Laboratory; the largest FBI information center; AMAZON also has its own fleet of named vehicles, etc. Major universities include: Idaho State; University of Idaho; BYU-Idaho. In fact, the LDS university has MORE students on campus than the University of Washington.
It's so nice here, that I shall end with a wish that you find what you're looking for: somewhere else! /grins

I'm Native from the Fort Hall Indian Reservation so it limits the Pocatello/Chubbuck from spreading northward or westward. The city continues to build into the hills, and I-15 and I-86 will be expanded to three lanes through the city. Eventually developers will have to start building upward such as skyscrapers or develop more growth southward toward Inkom. Be interesting to see how Pocatello will grow in the future.

Another thing to consider is that Pocatello has a university which adds a level of diversity to the town, to include athletics and culture with the Stephens Performing Arts Center. In addition, IF has Ammon as adjacent town, Poc has Chubbuck. Rather comparable in population.

Pocatello has hills, IF is mostly flat. IF has fewer rough areas in town and the people are a little less rough around the edges than Pokey. IF has the river and a better downtown. Pokey is a shorter drive to big cities. IF is a shorter drive to the Tetons and Yellowstone.
If you’ve got a family, choose IF. It is nicer in general without a doubt.

Just don't turn it into Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Compton, Portland, Seattle, Barstow, Tacoma, or any of those overgrown cities with trash in the streets, 7-11's smell like urine because people pee in the parking lot which bakes in the sun to give it a potent aroma, homeless living in tent cities because the locals can't afford the cost of living(I've seen them in Seattle), and the smell of weed floating in the air as you go downtown to a small shop for ice cream or to grab some dinner. The heat is going to rise in Idaho in our more populated areas as more housing developments, businesses, and paved roads are built to accommodate everyone that is running away from their ruined cities. Real estate developers have to keep getting rich now that they've jumped on that get rich band wagon. Sell off a piece of Idaho so you can get rich too.
