Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I love how your realism art look like a painting and not a digital picture. I love your style ❤
Exact words man...
His "realism art"?
You‘re getting so good with your art 😶 😳 love seeing your process and am very grateful for your shared knowledge 💙 thank you Chris☺️✨
Thanks!
@@paintcoach Id second that- dunno how to put it but you sort of added a level of maturity overnight! Dead good chief.
(Says he that is completely pants!).
This was the best video I’ve watched about planes of the face! When you talk about your experiences, it’s like I’ve been at that exact spot. Maybe it’s the Italian in us thinking alike lol
Started my first oil painting yesterday! Your videos are so helpful :)
That makes me happy to hear!
This tutorial was instructive. Understanding the planes of the face have helped me in 2D vector animation.
Good timing I’m in the middle of a series of portraits. Thanks coach!
Happy to help!
Oh my gosh this was so good I was watching tv and instantly could see the plains on the people’s faces. So cool. Thanks
You are a very good portrait painter in oils. You capture the emotion very well

Wow it's been a while since I've watched any oil painting videos, but your art has noticeably improved!
Really glad I found your channel! The portrait painting tips have been helpful and I appreciate that you speak clearly quickly and get to the point. I'll be checking out your Patreon - thx for posting this vid
Love you cris
Very helpful.
Thanks for this interesting video!
❤loving this channel
Chris, I say your still one of the best with portraits. I remember your work from a couple years ago. You were in a different studio. I love your new one. 🌴. Tallahassee
Been binging your videos for techniques for this massive 60x60 painting project I’m working on & man !.. some of your videos helped correct little habits I’ve had for years. So far, piece is looking like my best work ! Bless you!!!
Thanks so much for this. I had a go at the exercise and couldn't believe how much it showed the importance of planes v features. Has made a significant difference for me.
You have improved so much over time ( if that's even possible ), thank you so much for these videos I'm going to start painting portraits again because of this lol thanks
You are amazingly good. 👌
Great video!!! Thank you!
This video helped me a lot! Thanks so much :)
Wow! Keep up the good work!! The portrait looks just like you!
Thank you so much 😀
Wow…this is a very good self portret. It’s so hard to get a good one…Struggling to get my own, but your explanation about the planes is great. Thanks
Videos that feel that we should be paying but it´s free. Thanks Coach.
I feel like this would help alot not just with portraits but hugely with "scenery" where the figures are at a distance and the detail is not even visible
I tried to do a portrait the other day.... It was a complete disaster. I believe this was my problem. I think I'll go and find a picture of that head model and paint it a couple times. Thank for the tip!
I literally didn't know how to draw a realistic looking nose until I saw a video on documenting the planes of the nose and all of a sudden, I could draw a realistic nose
Dude, no way. I'm in the matrix because I've been thinking about how i needed a video like this for like 3 days now.
That portrait of the baby at the end of the video turned out really well! It looked cuter than the real baby.
Gahh I’ve been struggling with an acrylic portrait for a few days now! Happy I found your channel! 😵💫👍🏼
So helpful! Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Cesar: Here's how you look at your face in a mirror for five hours
Chris: Take a picture and go get painting!
Bro every time I watch one of these my paintings get better immediately. Regret not listening to my art teachers 🥴🤣 thanks for the free advice as always!
I procrastinated watching this video because I don't do portraits (yet). But the planes idea is super helpful with my landscapes and painting rocks! I should've known lol Thanks 👍
The baby painting you did is amazing! Came out amazing! Thank you for sharing these tips with us today, Chris.
Dang, that baby portrait is great!
good explanation !
Wow I just learned so much . Thanks ☺️ 👩🎨🎨👩🎨🎨
Glad it was helpful!
so interesting. I can do an illustrative kind of face in pencil drawing. I shy away from painting faces. Making them realistic is difficult and then, how to go about painting the face seems even more so.
I'm glad I watched this video as it takes some of the intimidation away.
I know that I also have to practice at it as you stress.
I will need to rewatch this a few times and then make an effort to try it.
Go for it!
well done lad
Ty for the video
This was such a good lesson. Also my favorite self portrait of you.thanks Chris.
Now I know who you remind me of…Steve Howie! Love your videos btw. ❤️
Great tip. Thanks a lot! I’m just starting my journey with the painting and I bombed the wall, because I know how my paintings should look like, while I’m painting it looks much more different. 😂Lol
You’ve just answered a question that I have been unable to find keywords to research. It’s been a forever struggle to not understand how to become more detailed in my work. I do more fantasy oriented paintings with creatures, more sci-fi leaning. However I would spend so much time struggling with direction of light for details, that it just didn’t feel real enough because it didn’t shift properly. I can see the image in my head, but could never make it make absolute sense when only using shifts in value, and not my now newly added word PLAINs!!!! Thank you!!! (Hope that made sense 😂)
@ Williams > is Planes ( a Flat surface that has one common shade value)
Wow! Nice video Chris. I’m lost for words to describe your work. This video in particular is of great help! Thanks so much. I struggle with very light skin values, but I will keep trying. You are an amazing Coach! I truly appreciate all you do to keep us in check! Question: when using blues, is cobalt blue, ultramarine blue or Prussian blue equally used in portraits? Blessings and take care.
super explicado
Nice videos
Great help 👌👌
Happy to help
Good morning
Seems like you could maybe get small post it notes and stick them all over your face, to "see" where the planes are and how each paper surface catches the light differently. Or use that head app, that looks cool too
I would love to know which colors you use as well ♡♡♡
💛💛💛
What classical music did you use in this video? It's beautiful!
Chris, I really like your style of instruction and the quality of your work. Due to the chemical aspect of things and painting in my home I am using acrylics. My question is do you have students following you on Patreon that are using acrylic paint rather than oils? It seems to me a lot can be gleaned and only a few modifications would need to be made. Any others out there in this situation? Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thx
I been watching and enjoying your video’s for a while could you post the app you used I would love to check it out. I do look forward to all your video’s thank you.
How do you get accurate proportions.
i read the title and I broke down
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel thanks to help us
Hii chrish
this was plain and simple 🤣
I can't find the face model app he mentions 😢
What's the name of the app again?
i can't find this app by that name on the google play store, is it only for apple? does anyone know?
I noticed that you paint in layers and sculpt, while other artsits like 'Alpay Efe' seem to just fill in the blanks with splotches of color. Do you know what these two different methods are, if one is easier than the other, or have any other opinions on them?
Thank you , amazing channel... amazing advice... i cant find that app . Is it available for android? Is it called "head model"? Thank you
I couldn't find it either. Would really appreciate a reply please... Thank you
Is it the Head Model Studio app from Loomis & Asaro?
Yes
art teacher send me this
Hi! Thank you for this video! I can't find the Head Model app you are talking about...perhaps because I have an android phone? Can you please provide a link?
apps.apple.com/us/app/head-model-studio/id1527028690
@@paintcoach Thank you!! Yes, it is only for iPhone. If you happen to hear about a similar on for Android users, I'd love to download one :)
Guys How does it usually take you to finish a realistic portrait of an A2 size ?🤔
