  • Reigning 500cc World Motocross Champion Eric Geboers, former title-holders Dave Thorpe and Georges Jobe, plus rising stars Kurt Nicoll and Jeff Leisk, were ready for what promised to be a truly unforgettable year of MX action in 1989.
    www.dukevideo.com/prd4785/Wor...
While Australian Leisk, in his first full 500cc season, and Dirk Geukens shared the wins at the opening round, old-hands Geboers and Thorpe soon took control to dominate every race at the next three rounds. After four events it was honours even, the pair sharing the championship lead with equal points.
Kees van der Ven was the in-form man during the middle of the season, taking wins in Scandinavia to bring himself onto the tail of the title chase, behind Brit Nicoll and Leisk. However, after seven rounds, it was Geboers who held the lead, almost 30 points ahead of Thorpe.
The British star fought back to claim four wins from the next six races, including double victory at his home round. The slim chances of Geboers retaining his world title disappeared at the penultimate round, as Thorpe took both wins and his third 500cc World Championship.
This is the story of a dramatic season featuring incredible race action, fascinating interviews and all the mud-spitting, high-jumping, bike-smashing moments of an amazing year.
Features action from Holland, France, Italy, Finland, San Remo, Britain, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
Motocross World Championship 1989 is part of a collectable set of classic MX World Championship reviews.

This brings back good memories. We used to love Geoff Leisk . living up in Queensland I’d religiously buy Australian Dirt Bike magazine and talk about motocross on the way to school bus.

Thanks for the upload! I remember that race, HRC was dominant but Thorpe was a bit off here. The tracks were brutal like Valkenswaard or Lommel... Astonishing how good works suspension was back then.

Why they got rid of this class is beyond me. These guys were incredible.

On that track, these new 450's wouldn't cut lap times like the top 5 riders in this race. Blaze on !

I doubt that. Did you try a recent 450? Those bikes are scary and the top riders today are squeezing them...

At :19, the earth's rotation was slowed slightly.

The lap looks faster than todays 450 4t.

As a fan/spectator it is MUCH more entertaining and spectacular but I ensure lap times today are faster.

A long-shot, but what the heck. Was there a Grand Prix track somewhere in Europe with an outrageously long up-hill back in the 70's or 80's ?
    Possibly Austria ?

I know that Payerne in Switzerland was quite hilly

I said Payerne in Switzerland was quite hilly, but the Grand Prix track you're after is Sittendorf, Austria. That track had a Long!! Up hill😀
