Learn the basics of drum n' bass and breakbeat for the drums in the video lesson! Excerpted from the Modern Drummer Festival 2005 DVD. More information at HudsonMusic.com
wow, this is amazing! drum n bass makes so much more sense now :) i love the idea he explains of how the beat can be displaced so much by the fact that its like a phrase just being played again and again, beginning on different random beats of the bar, like someone is just pressing the button over and over at different times
Jojo Mayer is the most talented drum set player ALIVE. I have no doubt of that. Extremely talented. He maked those drums sing a beautiful melody. Ridiculous technique, marching snare influenced tricks, beautiful moeller, great around the kit, great from both a visual and musical stand point. The guy is a beast.
I never like this kind of music, untill I heard Mayer play it. He brings a whole new method to this style of drumming and as a result as made a whole new kind of drumming. One word brilliant.
Jojo tops them all in my book. He has great ergonomics, a master's level of precision, speed and creative limb independence. Buddy was incredible in so many ways but Jojo is taking the kind of style Buddy laid out to a higher level, equals his speed and grooves like hell. I'm not knocking any of the greats because there's so many I admire. I just haven't seen anyone with an astonishingly broad, multidimensional skill set as Jojo.
I enjoy that he shows you what he's doing on practice pads. Makes it easier to understand the subtle variances as well as gives it a unique character of it's own. Nice instructional! Thanx for posting!
jojo mayer is IMO, one of the best drummers alive. skill, a really good attitude, and doesnt limit himself to one style of music/drumming.... he's simply amazing.
Jojo is a dedicated human being, and he listense to everything, an out there talent, great player, good human being. Good to have you on the planet JOJO.
this guy is just AMAZING... not because he plays fast or bullshit like that... hes really saying something on the drums... and the music he plays to in this clip is fantastic
In my opinion. Jojo has become the best drummer of all time. He's taken everything that the greats like Buddy Rich, and Tony Williams, etc. have done in the past and brought drumming to a whole new level. It's truly amazing. I guarantee that if you told him to play any random style of music off the top of your head, that he could do it.
Too funny atm I'm obssessing with Jojo and Tony Williams, hearing him mention Tony's name was perfect. [omens all around] Love this Jojo's a master, a true master one who continues to advance his craft.
holy shit this guys an animal. He has such a great outlook on drumming and this lesson as well as every other video ive seen with him just shows how versatile he is as a drummer. That bit around 4:00 where he plays and repeats different sections of the same pattern is incredible. Thats what precision is
Damn Right! I said the same thing when I first saw him, then I got so mad I made myself learn his fluid style. It took me several years, but, I finally got the hang of it.
this dude is like the carl sagan of drummers... he takes many concepts from a variety of great drummers from the past and combines them in new and enlightening ways
Hehe, he's swiss, I've seen him on a small stage in Basel, gr8est live dnb I've seen up till now. He plays there every year in return for being able 2 play when he wasn't that famous. gr8 job Jojo
The really cool thing about all the great drummers is that when theyre up there doing their (yes, all three in one sentence) thing, theyre not even having to think about it. Muscle memory.
He does these in a few of his videos, such an impressive technique. Can’t tell if it’s a controlled buzz with one motion or four independent flicks of the fingers? Either way it’s incredible
this guy got it a lot...the thing he says in the end is right that he isn't try to be a machine but he wants to open a new phase of music...he is the first at this style and i think is very difficult...
He stays relaxed and focused. When a professional drummer looks like he is sturggling it's usually part of the act, they all train themselves to play with the least amount of effort.
I will vaguely agree that it is a mix of musics from many places, but looking at the basics, it was the mix of the blues (from slave music) and ragtime (a very american development from classical music) that specifically influenced jazz the most, and the people who really first started playing jazz like buddy bolden, jelly roll morton, joe oliver, louie armstrong, etc. were all american without exception. No one played jazz outside the U.S. until the 30's
@fallingfromjupiter Very true :) I am referreing to the original sample in this case, though. But yeah, I think it is pretty common to play it like that.
@xCrumblingMirth I definitely agree with your opinion on fast drummers, but I think you should look into some more of Kollias's stuff. Although he plays metal, he's actually a VERY seasoned drummer. If you search around, you'll find some of his other work.
"THEY HAD THIS FUNNY BOOGALO-TYPE OF DIDDY" - he's just too cool!!
Saw this comment when I was a kid, awesome to still see it here 👍🏼
This is the first video I ever liked on CZcams... 15 years back

Well you’re an idiot then

Those last 20 seconds of playing, just demonstrates just how good at phrasing Jojo Mayer actually is.
his DVD is probably one of the most informative things on technique out there now... and he makes it soo entertaining...
Best I've seen in 10 years.Really.He's a magician
this guy is just AMAZING... not because he plays fast or bullshit like that... hes really saying something on the drums... and the music he plays to in this clip is fantastic
I totally agree...Jojo is Jojo - he's unique...and such a warm person, modest & humble....great guy.
In my opinion. Jojo has become the best drummer of all time. jojo is just mind blowing.
amazing at what he does.

Man. Jojo. So awesome.
I truly believe this man has mastered the art of drumming.
This is the new jazz in a way, everything is spontaneous.

I've always been IN LOVE with this drum pad. FANTASTIC. :p~~

Mayer is a fucking genius. He isn't just a pair of sick hands and feet. He KNOWS what he's doing and WHY he's doing it.
Take that!!
Awesome drummer.
I have one that I borrowed from the drumline at my school! It's amazing!
Amazing skill
Damn Right! I said the same thing when I first saw him, then I got so mad I made myself learn his fluid style. It took me several years, but, I finally got the hang of it.
Thanks JoJo, now I can breakbeat!
Ok... THIS is what I want to learn to play.. Drum N' Bass is amazing.
this dude is like the carl sagan of drummers... he takes many concepts from a variety of great drummers from the past and combines them in new and enlightening ways
my dad went to school with him....cool stuff, i already met him aswell, and i know no one cares;D
awesome, crazy guy. Is totally amasing.
Our species needed someone like him.
this guy is awesome
i saw him live, and he plays with just one bass drum faster than i can do with 2
this guy is what all drummers on youtube should look up too when looking for a guide to good tempo and technique.
The live tracks were all performances of music from the JoJo Mayer & Nerve album "Prohibited Beats". It's an amazing record!
I've seen him live a bunch of times with S.H.T. and the solo stuff. He will take your head off!!
I never thought of translating my beats into sentences... awesome tip
yeah, he's good too. I saw his d&b - it was pretty wicked as well. They're both great drummers.
There's a great facebook group called "Live Drum&Bass / Jungle Drummers" you guys should check out :-)
Hehe, he's swiss, I've seen him on a small stage in Basel, gr8est live dnb I've seen up till now.

very well said, he phrased "phrasing" in very a easy to understand language.
"That that that that that sentence will always repeat" hahaha
This dude is on the cutting edge of drumming today.

4:44 single handed four stroke rolls?
He does these in a few of his videos, such an impressive technique. Can’t tell if it’s a controlled buzz with one motion or four independent flicks of the fingers? Either way it’s incredible

jojo is basically the epitome of everything, traceur ;)
The whole video is sick. But, that final break (5:43 secs) WOW.
i'm guessing it's some midi-trigger type thing so he can get sampled sounds ... this guy is just insane. so badass.
insane drummer
the man's a god!!
whoa nice
The man!
Great stuff but i would like to hear a few new tunes from jojo. Overall best Modern Drummer in the world, like his jazzy feel. Peace
i want to hear a mix of jojo and Bernard Purdie. Best drummers EVER!!!
@1Drummer88 I really don't know... I don't get it either. it's astounding to me how some people dislike phenomenal and truly magical talent.
He stays relaxed and focused. When a professional drummer looks like he is sturggling it's usually part of the act, they all train themselves to play with the least amount of effort.
my king
@mrtjwest I'm not sure.. it's exclusively Sonor, I do believe.
YEAH, BABY!
wow this guys good
The King of Clean.
Listen to the first album of the Screaming Headless Torsos, where Jojo is the drummer. It just blows your head off.
so interesting
good video

@fallingfromjupiter
